DAVID MILLS RECOGNISED FOR HIS HELP WITH THE BBQ TRAILER

At our meeting on 17th June 2020 at the RSL Rooms, Ron presented David Mills with a certificatethanking him for his input and contribution with the setting up of the barbeque trailer.

David is a member of the Strezleki Lions Club and it was great to have him at our meeting.

On your 14th birthday, World War I starts, and ends on your 18th birthday.22 million people perish in that war.

At 55 the Vietnam War begins and doesn’t end for 20 years, 4 million people perish in that conflict.

On your 62nd birthday you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War.

Life on our planet, as we know it, should have ended.Great leaders prevented that from happening.

When you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends."Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900."

How do you survive all of that?When you were a kid in 1985 and didn’t think your 85 year old

grandparent understood how hard school was,and how mean that kid in your class was.

Yet they survived through everything listed above.Perspective is an amazing art, refined as time goes on, and enlightening

like you wouldn’t believe.Let’s try and keep things in perspective."

SUZANNE AND MOIRA – WHAT A TEAM

IN THE GARDEN WITH LINDA:

When you look outside this time of year the last thing you feel like doing is standing out in the cold, wet and windy weather, especially if you live in the cooler areas. Don’t let this put you off. There is so much to do in the garden and a lot more to do in the garden shed. Get off the couch and put on the thermals, the beanie, a coat and your gumboots and warm yourself up with some winter garden love.

Tool TimeWhy not head out to the shed, and sharpen, clean, oil and maintain your garden tools. Sounds tedious, but it’s really rewarding, and will save you cash in the long run. Practicing tool hygiene will prevent the spread of disease.

Mulch your bedsTop up mulch on your veggie patches, herb gardens and ornamental beds. Choose sustainable, low environmental impact mulch, one that will enrich your soil as it breaks down. If in the southern states try to avoid Sugar Cane as it would have a high carbon footprint due to transport.

Green ManureGreen manure crops are good to go now… improve that dormant veggie patch. In cooler to temperate areas you can use crops like like faba beans or field peas and for warmer areas try mung beans. Remember to chop and drop them before they flower.

Pruning & WeedingPruning and weeding is a great job to do at this time of year. Deciduous fruit trees love a big old haircut now, except your apricot

PlantingIt’s bare root season! Get your deciduous fruit trees in now, including apples, pears, plums, peaches and nectarines. Deciduous exotic trees can also be planted now.There’s still a bit happening in the veggie patch, especially if you love your brassicas eg broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, spinach, silver beet and kale. You could also try carrots, sweet peas, broad beans, coriander and peas.

(Oak Brook, Ill., June 22, 2020) – Five years ago, Lions Clubs International set a goal of tripling its global impact by helping 200 million people around the world per year. Through the kindness of the organization’s 1.4 million Lions members, this year they achieved it, bringing more good to the world than ever before.

“Today is a day of great celebration for Lions everywhere,” said Lions Clubs International President, Dr. Jung-Yul Choi. “Lions didn’t just reach our goal of serving 200 million people this year—we exceeded it, serving more than 275 million people together. It’s all thanks to the generosity of our global Foundation, and the efforts of the incredible men and women around the world who put their kindness into action by serving their communities as Lions.”

For more than a century, Lions have strengthened local communities through hands-on service and humanitarian projects. That service impact is amplified through the generous support of the Lions Clubs International Foundation, which has awarded more than one billiondollars since its founding to empower the service of Lions and bring hope to some of the neediest places on earth.

Here are some of the ways Lions helped communities during their historic year of service: • Provided diabetes screenings to more than 13.3 million people • Collected food and distributing meals to more than 14.7 million people • Planted trees that benefit more than 5.7 million people • Supported the treatment for river blindness to help more than 8.5 million people • Offered vision screenings to more than 5.7 million people • Advocated for more than 2.2 million people touched by pediatric cancer • Created educational opportunities for more than 2.9 million people

“The number of people we served is inspiring,” said International President Choi. “But what truly inspires me is thinking about each of the people that these numbers represent. They are lives that Lions have touched, in ways both big and small. Every volunteer makes a difference,and their volunteerism shows how important compassion and kindness are to the world, especially during times like this.”
