The Snows of April…….
Our first event of the year
was snowed out!! The new
date will be April 14. Please
call Jim Rihanek 303 204-

They fought the wind but
many spectators really en-
joyed watching the hunt.
Thank you to everyone who
made this event so special.
I’m sure we are all looking
forward to the Jeff Morse
Clinic that is coming up April
5-7. Call Jane McBride for
more information. Many
members use this time to

Another successful Easter Egg Hunt!
It was sunny and relatively warm but unfortunately windy, for this year’s East-
er Egg Hunt. We had a good turnout nonetheless, with 12 drivers and lots of
spectators.
Claudia Wilson did a great job organizing with a somewhat different format
this year. Winner of the turnout class (Sheryl Thombs – again!) and best bon-
net or hat class (Clay Speaker) were “awarded” numbers one and two. Mixed
in with all the plain eggs on the field were eggs starting with three and going
up. After looking for eggs, while competitors held on to their plates in the
wind and partook of the potluck organized by Sharron and Mike Pizzuto, Clau-
dia and Wally Carfield counted eggs and identified who had found numbered
eggs. Everyone who had numbers got to come in numerical order to the prize
table and choose from an extensive array of donated prizes – horse treats,
wine, pictures, and much more.
See our list of sponsors on the next page and be sure to support them as well!
Richard Gill from Gill Allen Photography was there to take pictures.
Watch his web site at http://www.gillallenphotography.com – the pictures will be there shortly. (Scroll down the front
page to featured events.) Especially look for the turquoise chickens!
The wind drove folks away before we had a chance to properly thank Claudia, Sharron, Mike, and Wally and the turnout
judge, Ann Hagerty – but folks had a great time, so a heartfelt Thank You for all your hard work!

Come have fun practicing cones and learn from the instruction of Rob McCartney. Clinician Rob McCartney has
been driving for thirty-five years. In the early days of his career he focused on pleasure driving. In 1991 he navigated
for Jack Stewart and his pair. In 1997 he navigated for Vickroy in the World’s Pair Event qualifications. Also in 1997
he drove his first CDE. He did it the hard way. He drove a tandem. Since then he has competed in CDEs with singles
and pairs. In 2007 he made the cover of The Whip.
The fun day will feature three areas. They will be as follows:
1. A 9 obstacle training course (incorporating an L)
2. Mini horse and small pony area with serpentine, wave, and five gate loop de loop
3. Horse and large pony area with serpentine, wave, and a five gate loop de loop
Remember to bring a lunch and chairs. At approximately 1:30, (or earlier if everyone is finished) join us for lunch. Eat
and participate in a question and answer session with Rob McCartney and fellow participants.
Please RSVP to Marie Harrity 303-841-6142 or June Ayers 303-688-0354
Volunteers needed!
Because everyone tends to get stir-crazy and looking for something to do over our long, often dreary winter, the Amer-
ican Driving Society came up with the arena driving trial (ADT). It’s kind of a mini-CDE that can be held indoors if nec-
essary. It includes dressage, cones, and hazards, but all three phases are driven in an arena, if needed.
The dressage tests are designed to accommodate any size or shape arena, and can be found on the ADS web site.
(http://americandrivingsociety.org . Look for Dressage Tests in the left sidebar. We’ll be using ADT Training test 1
and Preliminary test 1. Cones are as usual. Rather than a full cross-country course, there are 2-4 hazards set up in
the arena. You drive them one at a time, with a pause between each to let the volunteers record the time for each.
Your “marathon” score is your total time (converted to penalty points) plus any driving penalties.
Mary Woolverton has graciously agreed to hold the event at her Victory Morgan Horse Farm in Elizabeth. It has an
indoor arena as well as a large outdoor arena, plus space for hazards outside. Depending on weather conditions, we
can drive all three phases inside, or split them between inside and outside.
We’re asking each competitor to bring along a volunteer. No job should take longer than the portion of the event that
it is supporting (i.e., dressage, cones, or obstacles). Volunteers will help set up and take down obstacles and cones
course, scribe, judge and time cones, set cones between competitors, measure vehicles, time hazards, and take
scores to the scorer. If everyone provides one volunteer there should be plenty of help and people can learn more
about the different parts of the event. And even if you’re not competing or coming as a competitor’s volunteer, we’ll
let you volunteer anyway!
Don’t forget to bring lunch and a chair!

A continuous driving event consists of three or more phases of competition, usually with each phase based on
an ADS competition (super reinsmanship, pace, dressage, cones, etc.). The phases are driven consecutively
and may be separated by brief rest periods. For our inaugural event, we’ll be using ADS Super reinsmanship
test #3, a cones course, and two obstacles or short obstacle courses.

[email protected] with more questions OR TO VOLUNTEER!

CDS Greenland Open Space trail drive - June 8, 2013
Greenland is part of the vast expanse of Douglas County open space you see along I-25 between Larkspur and Monument
hill. It is easily accessible at exit 167 from both north bound and south bound I-25. Lots of drive-through trailer parking, a
port-a-potty and a covered picnic area with really nice tables are all provided at the trailhead.
From I- 25 exit 167, go west .2 mile to where road turns south. Entrance to Greenland Open Space will be straight
ahead .4 mile. You will need to bring your lunch. The organizers will be there before 10:00 AM. Please plan to arrive early
enough to complete your drive by 1:00 PM. Our picnic will follow. If you have any questions, give us a call. Also, a heads-
up as to who is planning to come is always appreciated.
Your drive can be as long as 9+ miles or as short as you want it to be. Almost everywhere along the trail you will be able to
move off the trail to rest your equine and/or circle around to reverse direction.
Everyone from VSE to draft drivers can enjoy an interesting drive in an awesomely huge area of open space. After the
first .9 mile, you will have choices. [1] You can plan to drive the entire Kipps Loop for a 8.2 mile RT drive. [2] You can plan
to drive only the lower trail. That would be a RT drive of 2.0 miles to 7.0 miles depending on when you decide to reverse
direction. [3] You can plan to drive only the higher trail. That would be a RT of from 2.0 to 9.4 miles.
On all the trails, none of the inclines or declines are steep. There are no t any scary drop-offs. Most of the trails were origi-
nally graded and spread with gravel. Over time, some erosion and re-growth of the original vegetation has occurred. As a
consequence, in some areas one wheel path may be obscured and the ride can be a little rough. The trail is some what
comparable to a marathon course without hazards. However, you will have no need to go fast.

Items that are donated require a receipt for the value of the item and the word “Donated” written on the
