The Vienna-Goreville Eagles once again soared into the IHSA playoffs. The V-G Eagles finished their amazing season after their playoff match against Carterville, still ending with an impressive regular season record of 6-3.

“This has been a dream season,” said head football coach Mike Rude. “I am elated that another group of boys got the chance to be recognized as a playoff team and play in a State playoff game.”

After beating Elverado-Trico on September 28, the Eagles went on to play Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn (SVWW) on October 4.

The Red Devils at SVWW proved to be a tough match, but the Eagles prevailed, pulling off a 41-15 win.

The next weekend the Eagles were back home to play Carmi-White County. That afternoon the team suffered a disappointing loss of 36-8.

On October 19, the V-G Eagles traveled to Christopher to play the Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton Bearcats at their homecoming. When the game was over, the Eagles left with a 23-7 win and a possible playoff spot.

That playoff spot was sealed at the final home game of the regular season on October 26 against Eldorado, whose record

was 7-1. Prior to this game, Eldorado

had been in a three-way tie with Chester and Fairfield for first place in the Black Diamond Conference.

That game is one to be remembered. The crowd was on their feet. The roar from the fans was deafening. At that moment in time, everything else in the world stopped. All focus was on that game and those players.

To make it an even more memorable event, this game was also Senior Day, in which 19 Senior athletes were recognized.

The game was not an easy one. At the end of the fourth quarter, the final score was 14-13, with V-G taking the win. This win guaranteed the Eagles another playoff appearance.

In the State playoff game, the Eagles faced the Carterville Lions, who were the number one

seeded team in the State. There, the Eagles ended their season with a loss to the Lions (48-13).

Senior football player Christian Dahncke commented on the Carterville game. “I feel we represented both schools (Vienna-Goreville) with great class. We battled the entire game, never giving up, even when we faced the number one team in Illinois.”

Athletic SpotlightsFall Sports Wrap Up

As you wrap up your season, how do you think it went? The team exceeded my expectations. What was the highlight of your season?Defeating a 7-1 Eldorado team who was #1 in defense in Southern Illinois. How did you feel about playing Carterville in the playoffs?Carterville was the number 1 team in the state in class 3A. They deserve the ranking. They were definitely the Goliath to us.Additional comments:I would like to thank the student body, administration, and community for their continued support of our program.

As you wrap up your season, how do you think it went? This was one of the best seasons in VHS golf history. The girls’ team finished 2nd in the Black Diamond Conference and the boys’ team finished 4th.

What was the highlight of your season? The highlight of our season and the biggest story has to be Garrett Mott and the accomplishments he earned.

How do you feel about Garrett being the first golfer going to State in VHS history? He worked very hard over the summer and I’m very proud of his efforts, and honored to be a part of his success.

As you wrap up your season, how do you think it went?I feel it went well. We won all the games we said we needed to win at the beginning of the season, and put up a good fight for the ones we lost. We made the playoffs, so all in all it was a great season. What was the highlight of your season? When we got our win against Eldorado here at Vienna. We were picked to lose and made an amazing effort to win it in the end.How do you feel about going back to playoffs for the second year in a row? It’s been an amazing experience both times and we hope to make it again next year. How do you think your playoff game was?It went well. We moved the ball and made a lot of good plays against what is one of the best teams in Illinois.

As you wrap up your season, how do you think it went? Our season went very well. We won more matches this season than we did last year. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams made history this year. What was the highlight of your season? The highlight of my season was definitely going to State. How do you feel about being able to play in the State tournament? The State tournament was awesome. It was the greatest feeling ever being able to represent Vienna High School at a State tournament for the first time in history.Additional comments:I am going to miss our Seniors during next year’s season.

Austin Krelo Garrett Mott

As you wrap up your season, how do you think it went?It was good. We did a lot of learning and made a lot of improvements. Most of all we had a lot of fun. What was the highlight of your season? Our win against Cobden when we were at Cobden. We pulled through and played well. Also seeing our girls form that bond between teammates was great. What are your thoughts on your Regionals? We definitely picked it up at the end. The Seniors played intensely and with a lot of heart during their last game.

As you wrap up your season, how do you think it went? Our season was very successful. Having just 4 weeks to prepare, we were able to do a lot. Also, we were able to raise the $3,300 for the cost of our uniforms, warm ups and poms in just 2 months. What was the highlight of your season? There are 2 highlights of our season. The first was having 80 young girls attend our cheer clinic. Watching those girls perform in the rain and still have fun is a moment we won’t forget. The other was watching our football team get the win over Eldorado. How do you feel about the inaugural Spirit Squad? We couldn’t be prouder of this squad as a co-op cheer team. We finished the season with 19 girls from both schools who worked hard all season.

Allison Browning Lakin Reed

As you wrap up your season, how do you think it went?I feel that our season went pretty well. We didn’t always win, but we stayed up and really came together as a team. Hopefully, the new members saw that and they will be even better next year. What was the highlight of your season? My highlight was being able to play front row. I also really enjoyed the hand game before we played. What are your thoughts on your Regionals? They were okay. We started out really strong, but we just weren’t able to get the last couple points.Additional comments:Always go and cheer on your team. It really helped for us.

What was the highlight of your season? The highlight of the season was whenever we beat Eldorado on Senior Night. Another was helping teach the little girls cheers for our clinic. How do you feel about the inaugural Spirit Squad? For the first year, it went well. Hopefully it will carry on for the next year. How do you think the squad did?I think we did pretty good for the first year. What was the most challenging part of getting started as the first ever Spirit Squad?Working with others that you never have before. You don’t know their strengths or weaknesses.

Blood donors save lives one pint at a timeBy Cassidy Stout On Friday, November 1, VHS hosted its annual blood drive. The annual fall blood drive takes place in the old gym on the day of Halloween dress up. Mrs. Reichert and her nursing class assist the American Red Cross with the blood drive. The goal for the amount of donors this year was 38. The total number of donors signed up was 60, but 17 were unable to give due to various reasons. There was a total of 43 units collected. “Theblooddrive isbeneficialfor the nursing students because they get experience with being

around the blood donor process and providing nourishment for the donors. They also get to deal with the registration for donating,” said nursing instructor Mrs. Reichert. VHS has been hosting the blood drive for over 20 years. Nursing student Alyssa Ferguson said, “I think it is a really good experience for us. It is interesting to see how everything is done, and we get clinical hours, which is a plus.” Donors must be at least 16 years old and meet all the health requirements. VHS will be hosting another blood drive in the spring.

Volleyball wraps up the season at Trico On October 28, VHS volleyball girls ending the season at Trico Regionals against Anna-Jonesboro. Afteraslowfirstmatchwithaloss of 7-25, the girls came out with a lot of energy and heart for the second match. They were pumped to get back their loss and beat Anna. They fought long and hard against Anna with a disappointing loss of 20-25. Coach Kaylee Adams stated, “Our biggest issue is seeing a game out all the way to the end. We start to pick it up, but then we don’t finishitout.” This year VHS had a very young team with a total of 12 freshmen. It has been a learning experience for all them this year. VHS freshmen were able to

By Harley McIlwainplay many freshman games, which was a good experience to prep them for their JV career next season. According to Coach Adams, the girls have learned a lot this season. Shestated,“Ithasdefinitelybeenagrowing year for our future. All in all, we’ve had a good year and a lot of fun.” She went on to say, “The volleyball team had some losses, but the losses have made the girls mentally stronger.” The team has four seniors this year. They are Maranda Chance, Allison Browning, Ashton Stuby, and Nora Aroja. Coach Adams said, “I love all of our Seniors! They had great attitudes and were good leaders for the rest of our girls.”

Future Farmers are on the riseThe FFA was very busy this

past month with many activities, including competing in Career Development Events (CDEs) throughout Section 25, in which they exceeded expectations, and they had a great time doing it.

On October 1, the Vienna FFA Alumni held their annual Meet & Greet and business meeting. This gave the Alumni members an opportunity to meet FFA members they will sponsor for the 2013-2014 school year.

On October 3, the FFA Archery team went to the annual Section 25 Bow Shoot CDE. Vienna placed fifth out of nine teams competing. Sophomore Ryan Racey had the highest score for Vienna, shooting a 129.

On October 5, the Vienna and Goreville FFA chapters co-hosted the 4th annual Antique Tractor

Show at the Vienna City Park during the city’s annual Octoberfest. Sixteen tractors were registered for the show, in addition to driving in the parade. The FFA float was put together by Sophomore member Parker Agin. In addition, eager members showed up early to help apply the finishing touches on it. The Tractor Show was a great show, and the FFA had a great turn out.

On October 10, FFA Advisor Mr. Jason West and Industrial Arts teacher Mr. Bart Pulliam took a group of students to the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. The students participated in the annual Career Day Expo. Different job opportunities in the trade industry were showcased at the event. Career Day is a great opportunity for high school juniors and seniors that are interested in a trade careers

to go and receive information on different types of trades.

On October 17, the FFA’s crop judging team went to Carmi White County High School for the annual Section 25 Agronomy CDE. Senior McKenzie Mattox and Freshmen Courtney Boren, Aaron Taylor, Adam Virgil, and Cory Penrod made up the Varsity team.

On October 23, the Agricultural Sales team went to Eldorado to compete in the Section 25 Ag Sales CDE. Vienna placed third out of 12 schools.

The Vienna FFA is currently starting their annual sale of full racks of ribs for $19 a rack. The ribs will be cooked November 23, at the Vienna City Park. If you are interested in buying a rack of ribs, look for any FFA member with a sales sheet.

October 30 through November 1, the Vienna FFA attended the 86th Annual National FFA Convention & Expo in Louisville, Kentucky. While in Louisville, the FFA members had the opportunity to tour the National Corvette Museum and Factory, Churchill Downs race track, the Kentucky Derby Racing Museum. They also had some fun as a group playing at the local bowling alley.

The members attended the first general session of the 86th National Convention to show support for the Goreville FFA Chapter. Goreville’s FFA Chapter was in the running for three chances in three different areas to become the top FFA chapter in the Nation.

The FFA gets a rare opportunity to dedicate towards bettering their Computer team for the upcoming CDE on December 2 in Harrisburg.

November 1, the Vienna FFA Chapter attended the 86th Annual National FFA Convention, themed “Ignite FFA”, hosted in Louisville, Kentucky. National Convention is the action-packed event of the year for FFA.

Seniors McKenzie Mattox and Allison Browning, Juniors Tylour Daubert and Collin Brown, and Sophomores Katie White, Nathaniel Ross, Dusty McCuan, Shea Browder, and Rachael Ren atttended Convention.

While on the way to Convention, the FFA made a pit stop in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to take a tour of the only GM Corvette Factory in the world. While there, the members viewed the assembly line process of a 2014 Corvette Stingray.

Once they arrived in Louisville, the members changed into their official dress and went to Freedom Hall to browse through the FFA Shopping Center located in the convention center. After, they spent the night out on the town, having dinner and then bowling as a group at the local bowling alley.

Day Two brought quite the rush as members attended the first general session of the convention to support the Goreville FFA Chapter in their running for the Top Chapter in the Nation in three different categories.

Members also had the chance to walk the entirety of the Career Expo where members could explore their future careers. It also gave members from across the Nation the opportunity to discuss their future with colleges such as Illinois State University, Texas A&M, University of Illinois, and New Mexico State University.

Day Three was the day to venture back home. However, not before stopping at Churchill Downs to tour the museum and the famous Kentucky Derby racetrack.

Members got to walk the grounds, see the track, and even sit in the biggest grandstand around.

Chapter Vice President Tylour Daubert said, “I was glad I was able to go, though it was a very tough decision due to football.” His favorite part of Convention was going to Churchill Downs and getting to see all of the history of the Kentucky Derby, as well as gaining a new catch phrase, “Boomtown!”, the theme of speeches made throughout the year by Brennan Costello, the newly retired Central

Region Vice President of the National FFA.

As a personal note, getting to attend National Convention for the last time is extremely bittersweet, but getting the chance to attend Convention in both Indianapolis, Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky is definitely something that I’m glad to have experienced. National Convention is something that I believe every FFA member needs to experience at least once, because it has that much of an impact on a person.

From campaigns to service projectsBy Taylor Bundren Even though VHS has already passed through the first quarter, new Beta service projects are still opening up. Betas recently worked at Banterra Bank. The students helped the bank move around landscaping bricks. Banterra needed help removing the bricks in order to widen the bank’s drive-thru and the employees very were grateful for the Beta Club’s help. Beta Club also recently started

tutoring students at Vienna Grade School. Betas sign up to tutor there from three to four in the afternoon on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The club’s annual pumpkin painting was October 24. The pumpkins were painted by Betas for service hours. Then, the pumpkins were donated to the residents at Hillview Nursing Home. Beta Club is still continuing to work at Faith Alive a few times

Betas unleashed their inner artists for service hours

each month. The club is also still shelving books in the media center for a couple of times every week to earn hours. Beta Club has also recently selected Meighan Smith to run for President at Beta Club State Convention in March. When asked about VHS Junior Meighan Smith’s campaign, Beta Club sponsor Mrs. Bradley said, “We are still working on the exact slogan, but Meighan’s theme will

be the Energizer Bunny.” The VHS Beta Club is eager to help and support Meighan at State Convention, and she is enthusiastic about running for President. Meighan said, “I’m very excited to have this opportunity, and I can’t wait to see how the campaign skit will turn out. I’m really thankful to have such a supportive club.” While the convention is still far away, it’s always a favorite part of Beta Club.

On October 24, a group of creative Betas gathered after school to paint pumpkins for nursing home residents. There were many different designs on the pumpkins, ranging from a Charlie Brown theme to baseball logos. Each student who painted pumpkins earned service hours and had fun along the way. Knowing that their pumpkins would be donated to the residents at Autumn Ridge, the Betas were motivated to do their very best. Sophomore Kayler Hunt loved having the opportunity to donate

Seniors Lucas Wright and Nick Myers painted their favorite baseball logos onto their pumpkins. It’s safe to say that they have a competitive friendship, seeing as these teams went head to head in the 2013 World Series.

Sophomore Natalie Chambless is well-known for her artistic abilities. Seniors Cassidy Stout and Kathryn Jones (in the background) also worked hard to please the residents at Autumn Ridge!

pumpkins. She said, “It was fun knowing that these pumpkins would be going to Autumn Ridge and that they would make the people who live there happy. It was also really fun to think of original ideas to paint. I painted an Aztec print in black on my pumpkin.” It’s great to serve the Vienna community by doing something as fun as painting pumpkins. Not only did the Betas serve others, but they put on a little holiday spirit as well.

Some really creative ideas were brought to life through the paintings. This eye ball pumpkin really displays a good Halloween spirit!

Sophomores Ryan Bradley and Katie White both contributed in painting this cute pumpkin and they did a great job.

Beta Club News

The Betas that painted had very unique and cute ideas that really showed during this service project. Every pumpkin was different and creative, and the residents at Autumn Ridge loved the various designs!

Teacher Kaylee Adams goes on a Biblical adventure to IndiaBy Amber Agin and Brianna Sori

VHS teacher, Mrs. Kaylee Adams, traveled to India on a Biblical endeavor to help spread the gospel.

Many members of Vienna Fellowship Church joined Mrs. Adams on the mission trip. The trip was spent in two different states in India; the former being Andrha Pradesh and the latter being Orissa.

The expedition lasted from October 11 to October 25. The group spent the two weeks engaged in Biblical activities centered around aiding the people of India.

While they were in India, they set up a Vacation Bible School program for the children to learn

about the gospel through music.Mrs. Adams formed new

relations with others working in her ministry. She said, “Educating the children about the glorious works of God really is an eye opener and can bring people closer together.”

Mrs. Adams recommends going on a mission trip. She said, “Every time I go on a mission trip, I am greatly impacted by the things I witness. Spreading the word of God helps me strengthen my own relationship with the Lord.”

According to Mrs. Adams, anyone interested in going on a mission trip should be like-minded and a sound believer. If you have any questions about

the trip, the church, or anything pertaining to upcoming mission trips, attend Vienna Fellowship

Church or contact Mrs. Adams or Mr. Stafford.

Mrs. Adams bonds with local children in India as she shares her knowledge of the gospel with them.

the girls team, they were able to set the record for the best season on record at VHS. The 2013 Girls team now holds the school record with 15 wins and only three losses. The girls team placed 2nd in the Black Diamond Conference, also making them the first girls team to place in a tournament.

Boys team members Sophomore Garrett Mott, and Seniors Lucas Wright, and Trenton Lowery traveled to

the Sectional tournament at the Quail Creek Country Club in Robinson, Illinois.

Though Garrett was the only one to move on to the State competition, Lucas commented, “It was great day for VHS golf, on a great course. Although Trenton and I didn’t advance, it was an amazing experience to end our careers in the playoffs. Being a part of the Vienna golf team will be an experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life.”

What is break dancing to you? To me, it’s a way to show who I am. It’s my passion and I love to do it.

What caught your interest in break dancing? I watched my cousin do flips and other movements with his body and I just wanted to try. I’ve been hooked ever since.Who are your favorite dancers? My favorite break dancers are the Jabbawockeez. They’re my favorite because of their creativity in their dancing. They use popping and freezes in their dance.

Do you have partners and/or groups? Yes. My cousin D’Angelo is my dance partner. We are called “The Bandshell Bombers.”

How did you come up with the name “The Bandshell Bombers?”We all use to dance in our school’s band shelter and that’s how we came up with Bandshell. We came up with bombers when someone said, “you guys are the bomb” so I thought we should be called “The Bandshell Bombers.”

The new kid can dance?

What kind of style do you use in your dancing? I use freeze and popping. A freeze is a b-boying technique that involves you holding your body up with your hands. Popping is the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles while dancing.

How is this high school different from your old one? It’s smaller. Dixon High School was way bigger than this school so it’s a change.

New Talon staff member Robert Freed has a passion for break dancing. He answered some questions about his hobby.

ISAC teaches students about vocational educationBy Brianna Sori

On October 8, Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) Representative, Mark Woodbury taught students about vocational education programs.

Vocational education is training for a specific career in industry, agriculture, or trade.

Mr. Woodbury said, “I recommend vocational education to anyone who knows exactly what they want to do that doesn’t require a lot of schooling. It allows

for various job opportunities.” Students who want to practice

a specific trade should definitely look into vocational education.

Vocational educational has many advantages and disadvantages.

Less time and less money will be invested in vocational education. However, it is said that people who only attend vocational school will make less money throughout their lifetime

than those who attend college for higher degrees.

Mr. Woodbury said, “Shawnee College offers numerous vocational education programs to help train students in a specific trade.”

VHS Senior and Teacher receive Scuba Diving CertificationBy Markayla Johnson

VHS Senior Christain Dahncke and VHS teacher Mr. John Giffin completed their SCUBA Diving Training program at Mermet Springs in Mermet, Illinois over the summer break.

The guys completed the classwork portion of the program in one day. They did the pool work requirement for two days and they also completed two open water dives. Since being certified, Mr. Giffin has completed 98 dives. Christian has completed 5 dives since his certification course.

The training course was sponsored by SSI (Scuba Schools International). Christian Dahncke said, “I chose to take the course because it is something that I have always wanted to do since I was little, so that I could scuba dive with my dad.” Mr. Giffin chose

to become certified, “so I could embark on many underwater adventures”.

Christian is certified as an Open Water Diver. Mr. Giffin has attained the level of Master Diver. To attain the level of Master Diver, Mr. Giffin had to complete the Open Water Diver Training, log at least 50 dives, and complete extra courses such as Wreck Diving, Stress and Rescue, Search and Recovery, Night Diving, Deep Diving, and Nitrax.

Mr. Giffin went on a 7-day trip to Bonaire in the Netherland Antilles with a group from Mermet Springs this past summer. They went diving everyday during their adventure and they dove at several underwater shipwreck sites while seeing countless numbers of marine wildlife.

On Friday, October 11, the Spirit Squad held a Cheer Clinic for surrounding grade schools including Buncombe, Cypress, Goreville, and New Simpson Hill.

Girls ranging from Kindergarten to Eighth grade participated in the Junior Eagles Cheer Clinic and also performed with the Spirit Squad on Saturday, October 12.

Despite performing in the pouring rain, everyone enjoyed themselves.

“I had the best time being a part of the Junior Eagles day. All of the girls kept telling me how much they look up to us.”

Sophomore Spirit Squad member Mariah Nesler stated.

On Friday, the Junior Eagles were put in groups led by various Spirit Squad members and rotated between different stations including tumbling, stunting, group cheer, and dance.

Spirit Squad member Casey Rehburg commented, “I loved being able to teach the younger girls skills that they can use in the future. The Cheer Clinic was a big hit this year. Even though it rained on Saturday, everyone still went out on the field and tried their hardest.”

Vienna Fellowship Church climbs to successBy Brianna Sori

On Saturday, October 5, VHS staff members, Mr. Joshua Stafford and Mrs. Kaylee Adams, accompanied the Vienna Fellowship youth group on a rock climbing adventure at Paducah, Kentucky’s recreational center.

The rock climbing trip turned out to be a huge success! Everyone reached the top of the rock climbing wall.

For many of those that went, the trip symbolized the conquering of their fears.

VHS freshman, Jade Sanders overcame her fear of heights during the trip. She commented, “The climb was very scary. I had to concentrate on making it to the top instead of thinking about how

high I was. I’m glad I went and faced my fear.”

Mr. Stafford and Mrs. Adams enjoy taking their youth group on fun outings. They normally go rock climbing outside at places like Jackson Falls; however, due to poor weather at the time, they had to settle for an indoor rock climbing experience.

Mr. Stafford said, “We are really blessed in southern Illinois with all of the beautiful natural resources that we have in our back yard.”

Vienna Fellowship youth group plans on going on another outing like this again. They are always open to new people attending.

Parker Agin shoots for the stars at shooting competitionBy Amber Agin

VHS Sophomore, Parker Agin, and his American Trap Shooters Association (ATA) team competed for the first time on October 26.

The team went head to head with 150 other competitors at the Franklin County shooting competition.

Parker commented, “We all did really well. By myself, I hit 89 out of 100 targets. I placed 4th individually.”

Trap shooting is a sport, much like archery and darts, but with moving targets. The object of the

sport is to shoot down a clay pigeon that is released from a spring trap into the air.

Parker Agin remarked, “I joined ATA because it’s a lot of fun and I love shooting guns for competition.”

The team is coached by Bill Lawrence, Joyce Lawrence, and D.R. Agin Jr.

Practices are held every Sunday afternoon at the Rend Lake Shooting Complex.

Parker said, “I recommend joining ATA to others because it allows for opportunities such as VHS Sophomore Parker Agin competes

If you are interested in participating in this sport, the Southern Illinois Trap Shooting team will offer an opportunity for more people to become members. Practices will begin next spring.

Anyone under the age of 18 who has completed a firearm or hunter safety course is eligible to be a part of the ATA team. For more information, call Parker Agin at (618) 658-0098.

Game for Cats--Cat ladies all over the world are raging over this one. Apparently, it’s gotten press from the New York Times, ABC News, and a ton of others. Although it’s actually a popular app, it’s has a very simple concept: the cat tries to catch the light-up laser on the device’s screen.

iPhone Blower--This app is for when you just don’t feel like summoning up the energy to blow out your birthday candles. A small motor, located internally in an iPhone, circulates just enough air to blow some small leaves around.

Tea Party Finder--A colossal hit for loners everywhere. This app pinpoints your exact location to point you in the direction of the closest tea party. Don’t forget your tiara!

SimStapler--If you’re ever so bored that you have a desire to click a virtual stapler over and over, you’ve run across the right app. Tap the screen as much as you can for a pointless virtual score.

iHobo--If you’ve ever wanted to have your own hobo, well, your wish just might come true. Download this unique app, and a young homeless person will constantly pop up on your phone screen, requiring non-stop attention day and night.

Everyone has heard the phrase, “There’s an app for everything.” It’s hard to imagine that phrase is 100% “app”licable. Here’s a few apps that may have been designed by people with questionable standards.
