Thoughts From The Saddle… by Joan Lang, Palo Verde Republican Women President

Page 2 President’s Message

So, we are going to get a new Speaker of the House. I just won-der if anything will change. We were told that once we had the Senate and the House, things would get done in Washington. NOT! I am truly afraid for our country. Leading from behind has gotten us in a lot of trouble. Russia is laughing at us and aligning with Iran and Syria. China owns us via

our debt and North Korea is run by a madman with nukes. Our President and Secretary of State look like Mutt and Jeff..... days like these make me glad that I do not have grandchildren!

Build Prisons or Build Libraries! But, days like these make me proud to be a member of Palo Verde Republican Women! I hope you all saw our news flash about the library we started at Bethesda Baptist Church. What a wonderful first 'Story Time" we had. The children were wonderful. On Sunday, Jan and Mike Stephenson attended church services at Bethes-da, and Pastor Preston praised Jan and Palo Verde RW

for our hard work. He told his flock that they could "Build Prisons or Libraries". Ladies, I am

just so proud of Jan and all of her hard work. Our next Story Time is on October 24th...please call Jan and join us for READING, PIZZA, COOKIES AND ART.

Celebrating President Ronald Reagan

Our Ronald Reagan Celebration Dinner is moving along. We have secured a wonderful dance band for your dancing pleasure and some wonderful auction and raffle items. You won't want to miss out on win-ning a cruise or a week at a Marriott time share....plus loads of other great things! Save the Date: February 13, 2016!

We are committed to getting our name 'out there'. Our new Publicity Chairman, Bette Jefferson, is doing a great job. One thing that we need you all to do is to go

Did You Know??? Arizona Legislative District 23, or LD23, along with the

Maricopa County Republican Party have contracted with an attorney, Karla Krug,

for semi-pro bono legal work without performing any vetting of her personally

or professionally? Ms. Krug is liberal, and seems to dislike conservatives… a

lot. Why would our LD23 chairman employ someone who does not have

our best interests at heart? Just askin'… You can read more about this here.

Our First Reading Party Was A Great Success! Jan Stephenson/3rd Vice President, Outreach Chair

Our "Reading Party" at Bethesda was a tremendous success!!! I had a great time and I think the kids did, too. We started with 10 and ended with about 14 children. Kathleen Taylor did a wonderful job of reading; Ann Graham was fantastic with the art project; Cheryl made book marks; and our helpers took care of everything else (writing out name tags, participating with the reading group, videoing and tak-ing still pictures, helping with the art project, setting out pizza, juice and cookies, handing out bags for the kids to put their books in and giving out prizes (American flags, pencils, and patriotic leis). Plus cleaned up everything at the end. Thank you so much to everyone who participated! Three gals from the church, Whitney, Katherine and Mackenzie are playing a major role in the project. They have made up the rules and will oversee checking books out and in.

I attended church services on Sunday and Pastor Preston asked me to speak and then he praised us for five minutes. We both strongly urged the parents to get involved. Many people came up after church and hugged me and thanked me for what we are doing for them. Hopefully next month (Oct. 24) we will have more children and adults.

Thank you again to everyone. I think I'm probably getting as much or more out of this as the kids are! I hope you ladies feel the same way.

Fondly,

Jan

Palo Verde Republican Women Continue Their Winning Ways! Although Joan Lang lost her bid for president of Arizona Federation of Republican Women (AzFRW), our club proved once again that we are a top notch organization. The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) named our Caring for America activities the third best overall program in the Caring for America category! Congratulations to Jan Stephenson for spearheading this project and to Karen Garrett for all of her assistance.

At the AzFRW meeting held on September 10th at the Desert Ridge Marriott hotel in north Phoenix, our club continued its winning tradition at the state level. Our newsletter, The Patriot, was voted the best federation newsletter in the state of Arizona.

Proving once again that our club is comprised of women who are consistently in the trenches as they work tirelessly to elect Republicans at all levels of government, we re-ceived first place for campaign hours. The ladies within our club logged in 46,636 hours to ensure that Republicans were elected at all levels of government.

Palo Verde RW also was presented with the prestigious Turquoise award by the AzFRW and the Diamond award by the NFRW. Both awards indicate that our club is in the top tier of federation clubs both within the state of Arizona and within the nation!

Fiorina Wins NFRW Straw Poll: Garners Nearly 50% on Combined Ballot

PHOENIX, Ariz. – In a presidential straw poll taken at the National Federation of Republican Women’s (NFRW) 38th Biennial Con-vention on Sept. 10-12, Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina won the combined “first and second choice” ballot with nearly 50% of the vote. FULL RESULTS AVAILABLE HERE.

Voters were asked, “Right now, who is your first choice for Republican nominee for President in 2016?” Fiorina received 27 per-

cent of the 871 total votes cast. On the “second choice” ballot, Fiorina garnered 22 percent – for a combined total of 49%.

“It’s a very impressive number,” says national pollster Kellyanne Conway, who conducted the straw poll. “To have 17 candidates

and one person get a combined ballot that high essentially means that in a crowded field, one out of two participants cast a ballot

for her.”

Straw poll voters consisted of convention registrants -- almost entirely women -- from 43 states, Puerto Rico and the District of

Columbia. Candidates receiving more than 1% of the vote on the “first choice” ballot were:

Carly Fiorina — 27% Ted Cruz — 20% Ben Carson — 16%

Donald Trump — 14% Marco Rubio — 6% Scott Walker — 5%

Jeb Bush — 4% John Kasich — 4%

“Carly is one of us,” NFRW President Kathy Brugger says. “Not only is she a Republican, a woman and a member, but she also

has made a tremendous effort to reach out to us and cultivate a working partnership with our members. She is an excellent candi-

date and a strong, decisive leader, and we are confident that as more Americans get to know her, they will be equally impressed.”

Each of the declared presidential candidates was invited to address the NFRW convention, which was held in Phoenix Sept. 10-

13. Fiorina and Cruz accepted the invitation and spoke Sept. 11 and 12, respectively.

Founded in 1938, the NFRW has thousands of active members in local clubs across the nation, making it one of the largest wom-

en’s political organizations in the country. The grassroots organization works to promote the principles and objectives of the Re-

publican Party, elect Republican candidates, inform the public through political education and activity, and increase the effective-

ness of women in the cause of good government. https://www.nfrw.org/news-releases-20150913 Retrieved September 14, 2015

A thousand kudos to Allison Mary, member of Lincoln RW, and an associate of Palo Verde RW. As a result of her vision, attendees of the NFRW Conference were afforded the opportunity to seek rest and relaxation within the Arizona Hospitality Suite, all while having the chance to meet with many of our Arizona elected officials including Governor Doug Ducey, State Treasurer Jeff DeWit, Secretary of State Michele Reagan, Sheriff Joe Arpaio (who was a great hit with the ladies!), Rep. Trent Franks, Rep. Paul Gosar, Rep. Matt Salmon, Rep. David Schweikert, Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane, Arizona state Rep. Jay Lawrence and others. The suite was made possible as a result of donations Allison solicited and collected from Arizona’s five Republican U.S. Representatives and two Republican U.S. Senators.

From 6 pm, on Thursday, September 10th, through 12 pm, on Sunday, September 13th, 805 members of the National Federation of Republican Women (out of approximately 1300 registrants) visited the Hospitality Suite!

The suite created quite the buzz all weekend. Women from all over the country commented that the AzFRW Hospitality Suite was the best part of the convention. Stated Allison, “Everywhere we went, women would stop and express their thanks for providing such won-derful food and beverages. Many of their husbands were so grateful there was a place for them to "hangout" while their wives attend-ed meetings. Men and women even tried to donate money for the wonderful service we were providing.”

The undeniable success of the Hospitality Suite, according to Allison, can only be attributed to the many volunteers that gave of their time and expertise and worked so hard to provide first class service. Their commitment and willingness to help will be forever appreci-ated. First and foremost, the help provided by Paradise Valley RW member Marney Thompson proved indispensable. Additionally, Palo Verde RW members Karen Garrett, Sherry Gray, Joan Lang, Sheila Muehling, Cheryl and Leonard Pelletier, Anita Rodriguez, Linda Rizzo

and Jan Stephenson were instrumental in ensuring smooth operations throughout the conference. And special thanks to all of the other clubs who assisted: Arrowhead, Chandler, Mesa, Ahwatukee, Tempe, Prescott, Lincoln, Central, Paradise and the TARS! Together we created a truly special event.

Oh, The Places We Go And The Things That We Do! (cont’d)

The Governor really enjoyed his time, and our team is very thankful for you putting on an amazing reception."

On September 16th, Dr. Kenneth Michael Kearns came to speak to us about “Bias in the

Women’s Health Institute Study: The Profound Impact.” Dr. Kearns, M.D. is a political

healthcare speaker, a University of Arizona College of Medicine Instructor, an author, and

a practicing physician in Carefree, Arizona. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr.

Kearns maintains a private medical practice specializing in menopause, woman's health,

and cancer screening. The topic was well received by those in attendance and Dr. Kearns

fielded a significant number of questions both during and after the event.

Help Feed the Hungry!

It is so amazing how time passes. Next

month we will be celebrating Thanksgiv-

ing Day, and soon we will start planning

our menu and preparing to have our

family over or going to see one of our

children. How fortunate we are!

However, there are some families that

aren't as fortunate as we are. I have a

plan. Go to the pantry and see what you

have. Bring a grocery bag with you and

if there are two cans of vegetables or

pumpkin or whatever that can help to

make a meal, put one or two in the bag

and bring the bag to our October lunch-

eon and place it in our St. Mary’s Food

Bank boxes. We’ll be collecting food in

November too!

They will be so thankful and this will

make a better holiday for you.

Please Come to Our December 16th Christmas Party! Our keynote speaker will be LIN SUE COONEY! She was an anchor at 12 News for thirty years. Between 2005 and 2010, she also was a contributor to Raising Arizona Kids magazine. She currently works as the Director of Community Engagement at Hospice of the Valley.

For years, Cooney, a mother of four, wrote first-person essays for Raising Arizona Kids on everything from adopting her son to raising adventurous eaters. The result is “Off Camera: A Collection of Essays About Children and Families.” You may pur-chase a book for Lin Sue to autograph—all proceeds go to Hospice of the Valley.

Getting to Know Jane Di Giulio: Daughter of a California

Grape Farmer and Life Long Republican Having been raised a grape farmer’s daughter in the mid-dle of California’s San Joaquin Valley, I inherited our con-servative principles by which I continue to aspire today. From the moment Cesar Chavez and his band of protes-tors entered, uprooted, and deliberately destroyed our property in 1959, the lessons learned from this horren-dous event are forever indelibly etched in my mind. My parents were devoted Republicans as were both sides of my family. Our lineage can be traced to supporting Presi-dent Abraham Lincoln in the formation of the Republican Party.

Upon my high school gradua-tion, and not having any idea as to what my life’s profes-sion should be, I attended classes at California State Uni-versity, Fresno majoring in Nursing. As a student, I met and married John C. O’Brien, Ph.D, Professor of Ethics & Economics, CSU-Fresno, with whom I have four children: Kellie Marie Alberson, Kerry Patrick O’Brien, Tracy Anne Bessey and Kristen Noel Boyd. My four children have presented me with nine beautiful grandchildren rang-ing in ages from 18 months to 14 years!

During the first few years of my marriage to John, I partic-ipated in several charitable organizations including Wom-en’s Soccer League, serving as President, and the Fresno Opera League, and was very active in the Fresno State Faculty Wives Association, serving as Chair of the highly successful scholarship fundraiser, 73 Skidoo, held at the Del Webb’s Townhouse in 1973. This event raised over $1,000 for student scholarships, the most ever recorded at that time.

As my children grew, they became active sportsmen, and thus, I was their dedicated chauffeur to numerous com-petitive Northern California Tennis Association tourna-ments, soccer and volleyball tournaments, and skiing ad-ventures. Having graduated from Bullard High School in Fresno, Kerry, Tracy, and Kristen earned BA degrees from

University of California, Davis, while Kellie earned a BA degree from Sacramento State.

In 1993, John and I were divorced, and in 1996, while working at Fresno Community Hospital, I met and married Hugo A. Di Giulio, former Stanford University physics professor and healthcare consultant. We relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, where I gained employment as Coordinator/Secretary, De-partment of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Arizona, in which

I assisted the Department Chair and Administrator in overseeing the depart-ment’s operations and edu-cation requirements. In 2003, we were devastated to learn the diagnosis of Interstitial Pulmonary Fi-brosis (IPF), a very rare lung disease, from which my husband eventually suc-cumbed on August 5, 2009. The etiology is unknown; there is no known medica-tion, recovery regimen, nor cure for this mysterious and insidious disease.

After a 14-year tenure with Mayo Clinic, I retired from my position in January of

2012. The majority of my career was spent in the healthcare arena. I have traveled extensively to multiple foreign coun-tries with Italy remaining the highlight of all my international trips. I enjoy gardening, hiking, listening to a celebrated opera or a classic symphony, participating in community events, sports, semi-piloting a light airplane, and experi-menting with golf.

In June 2013, I was introduced to my new companion and partner, Ted Wischhusen, a retired Mt. View High School teacher, residing in Mesa, Arizona, and who is an avid golfer and cyclist.

The month of October contains few holidays to

observe… Only Columbus Day (12th) and Halloween

(31st). October 13 is the anniversary of the birth of the

U. S. Navy in 1775.

Special dates in American history that occurred in

October include the following:

10/1/1971: Disney World opened in Orlando, Florida

10/2/1950: The comic strip Peanuts by Charles M.

Schulz was first published

10/4/1895: The first U.S Open golf tournament was

played in Newport, Rhode Island

10/6/1927: The Jazz Singer, the first feature length

"talking picture" opened in New York

10/8/1871: A horrific forest fire burned a broad swath

of Wisconsin and Michigan, killing 1200 people

10/10/1935: George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess

opened on Broadway

10/11/1890: The Daughters of the American Revolution

was founded in Washington, D. C.

10/29/1858: The first store opened in the frontier town of

Denver, selling goods to gold miners

During this time of the year, we are knee deep in

attention to the electioneering going on and for all

the continual political news. Ronald Reagan com-

mented on the government and the political arena

when he said this in his farewell address in 1988:

There's a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of

physics: AS GOVERNMENT EXPANDS, LIBERTY CONTRACTS.

president. Most of the charter members had

been a part of Scottsdale Republican Women,

one of the most active groups in the state of

Arizona. The club eventually withdrew from

the National Federation of Republican Women

and member Joan Wood and others who

wished to remain in the Federation formed

PVRW. From the beginning, PVRW maintained

a reputation as a vigorous and active club, and

has remained a powerful force within the Fed-

eration to this day. We educate our members

through programs presented at our monthly

meetings (the third Wednesday of every

month—except July and August), through our

monthly newsletter (The Patriot), and by

attending AzFRW quarterly meetings.
