Ben’s Corner Hi Everyone,

This April has been a big time of

transition for our students who

are all growing in different

ways. Here is just a snapshot of

what’s been going on:

-Priya is learning bus routes and

is becoming more independent

with traveling!

-John R. is expanding into

new departments at his in-

ternship!

-John C. is mastering his

language skills!

-Daniel went to Google in

Mountain View to watch the

final cut of the documentary

that they made about him

(which features our pro-

gram!) and the word on the

street is that it was a HUGE

hit around Google. I’m so

proud of all of the amazing

young adults in our program

who continue to take on new

challenges to grow and learn

everyday.

is trying to get Kanye West out of there

because he insults people. He is calling the

Glastonbury Festivals organizers to re-

place him. He is getting a petition signed.

He has 80,000 signatures on petition on

March the 20th 2015. I think Kanye West

should not sing because he insults people.

Thank you

To Replace Kanye West. The singer

Kanye West that is known for rankling

people on stage is going to sing at Glas-

tonbury Festival. This is in England

Hi,

I am going to educate you about break

pads. There are 3 types of brake pads,

1.organic, 2.semi metallic and 3.ceramic.

The advantage: for the organic brake pads

are quiet operation and they are easy on

the rotors great for daily driven vehicles.

The disadvantage: they are not great for

incredible stopping power if you drive a

heavy vehicle, or a high horse power ap-

plicate.

The advantage: for semi metallic brake

pads that they work great street pre-

formance applications.

The disadvantages for the semi me-

tallic pads are that they are noisier

then the organic pads, and a little bit

more brake dust.

The advantage for the ceramic pads

that it will give pretty good stopping

power but mainly they are quiet and

very light on brake dust. They give a

great pedal feel and can be used for

some preformance applications.

I hop you felt educated. if not, then

I overcame my fear of stage fright. After the performance

my face was like a shining light of happiness. I celebrated

that occasion by going to my pastor’s house after school

and we listened to the performance together. I was really

happy because piano playing also makes my day. And I

am so excited to do it again on May 1st, 2015. This year I

am going to play a new song on the piano which will have

A minor in it. I did it by practicing Amazing Grace on the

piano for 5 months until my hands were hurting. But this

year I also practiced the song I am doing. I am so excited

to perform because ever since I practiced the song I have

been working on improving my A minor. This year I will

be playing a upbeat song called “In the Secret”.

Hey guys it’s me Cindy again. My article for this month

will be about a big milestone that I accomplished in the

past year. Last year I did Valley Idol. It was a big

milestone for me because in the past I was nervous to

play piano for more than 100 people. I only played

piano in front of my friends and family. And last year, I

played piano in front of people that I didn’t know. I had

to practice singing the song and practice singing the

harmony. On the morning before Valley Idol I still

practiced singing the song. The day on Valley Idol, I

wore my favorite Hawaiian dress. I was so excited.

Before I did my performance, I took off my shoes be-

cause I thought it would be easier to play the piano.

After the performance, I was so happy.

Dear Amanda,

I have a friend who wants to change me. He does not accept

that my feelings and thoughts are as valid as his. He ends up

getting angry with me and tells me I am a bad person. What

should I do?

Signed,

Mr. Misunderstood

Dear Mr. Misunderstood

Here is my advice for you. I think you should tell the person

how you feel in a stern and flat manner. Try to make him

understand that how he is making you feel hurts your feel-

ings. Make it clear to him that what he is doing bothers you.

Tell him to sit and think about how he makes you feel before

he continues. Tell him that what he is doing really bothers

you and annoys you. Really make him understand and tell

him that he should put himself in your shoes and try or defi-

nitely understand how you feel. I hope my advice helps you.

If you need more

help you can let me

know. Your friend

Amanda.

so do they. If we are most related to

Hi everyone, its time for my book review:

Usagi Yojimbo is a graphic comic series created by Stan

Sakai. The series is a historical, fantasy, action genre, The

series tells the adventures of a rabbit ronin called Miya-

moto Usagi. Usagi’s adventures take place in Japan in the

Edo period, also there are more anthropomorphic animals

than there are humans in the series. Usagi has many adven-

tures including taking on animal ninja clans as well as side

adventures, in two books Usagi must protect a holy sword

from ninja clans. The two main villains that Usagi faces are

a human lord called Hikiji and an anthropomorphic wolf

(psychopath, Priest) called Jei. Usagi is not a ladies man

but somehow most of the female characters in the series

have crushes on him including the leader of a ninja clan

called Chizu, Tomoe (the bodyguard of a young

lord), and a childhood friend of Usagi called Mari-

ko ( gave birth to Usagi’s son Jotaro, That Usagi

did not know of until she told Usagi that Jotaro is

their son in the last chapter in book six of the se-

ries). Usagi also gets in to sword fights with oni’s

(demons).

My thoughts of Usagi yojimbo is an excellent example of

historical, fantasy and action graphic comic series based on

samurai history. I also must say that the artwork in the se-

ries is that of a skilled penmanship that of a master comic

designer. I hope that You will read Usagi Yojimbo in the

future. stayton for my next book\comic review.

Student of the Month

The Student of the Month for April is John Rodrigues. John

is a man on the move. He works three days a week at a paid in-

ternship in a biotech company. John has done a fantastic job at his

internship. Over the course of the past

year he has developed his communication

and social skills while on the job. He has

also made great strides towards becoming

independent at the job. John also takes

general education classes at West Valley

College two days a week. He is 100% in-

dependent at these classes. Each semester

he choses which classes he wants to

take. In the past he

has taken History

of Horror Film, ce-

Learned Helplessness

Many young adults with disabilities

are observed waiting to be prompted

to do anything.

It’s Learned Helplessness!

They have become conditioned to

wait for permission.

To make the young adult more inde-

pendent and self-regulating,

Try “not telling them to do anything.”

Allow them to decide to sit, stand,

go, come, get dressed.

Use indirect prompts, hints, ques-

tions.

It might take a while for them to re-

develop self-determination.
