PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
STUDENTS LOVE BEING BACK AT SCHOOL
These were the words that came out of many of our students'
mouths!! They love being back at school and so do we!!! It was
an absolute joy to see and hear the students enjoying being
back at school. I noticed many of them have gotten taller or
maybe I’m shrinking!!!
Thank you parents for your support in the morning and
afternoon with our dismissal procedures. This has enabled us
to safely dismiss our students into your care.
CANTEEN NEWS- HEALTHY CANTEENS

RECONCILIATION WEEK
In 2020 Reconciliation Australia marks twenty years of shap ing Australia’s journey towards
a more just, equitable and reconciled nation.
Much has happened since the early days of the people’s movement for reconciliation, including
greater acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights to land and sea;
understanding of the impact of government policies and frontier conflicts; and an embracing
of stories of Indigenous success and contribution.
2020 also marks the twentieth anniversary of the reconciliation walks of 2000, when people
came together to walk on bridges and roads across the nation and show their support for a
more reconciled Australia.
As always, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and Australians now
benefit from the efforts and contributions of people committed to reconciliation in the past.
Today we work together to further that national journey towards a fully reconciled country.
Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities,
organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships
between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples.
We strive towards a more just, equitable nation by championing unity and mutual respect as
we come together and connect with one another.
On this journey, Australians are all In This Together; every one of us has a role to play when
it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and
communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures.

K-2 News
Well done to all the students who are back at school and working hard. It is great to see so many asking questions, listening to the learning instructions and focusing on their
learning tasks. The classes are humming along and getting back into their learning. I have had the pleasure of reading
and writing with students in all the K-2 classes and everyone (parents, carers, grandparents, aunties, uncles)
should be proud of the time and effort you put into home learning. The students have settled back into the
learning routine.
Literacy groups are all up and running with activities to explore sounds in words, practising sight words and adding ‘ed’, ‘ing’ and ‘s’. Reading is happening everyday
to build confidence and understanding.
![Page 4: Volume 2, Issue 6 MPE NEWS...Thursday 4th June, 2020 Term 2– Volume 2, Issue 6 Phone: 9602 6453 Fax: 9821 1473 Email: mtpritche-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au A picture says a thousand](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070900/5f364d05414e627dd76d6b0b/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
During Kindergarten Literacy lessons students are encouraged to engage in:
Using rhymes - like ‘snug as a bug in a rug’ or make up nonsense rhymes about things you’re doing – for example, ‘putting fish in the cat’s dish’. Saying, hearing and repeating rhyming sounds help
young children to make the connection between sounds and words.
Sing nursery rhymes to teach language, rhyme, repetition and rhythm. You could try ‘Baa baa black
sheep’, ‘Miss Polly had a dolly’ or the ‘Alphabet song’. This enables children to practice sounds and articulate words and rhymes
Exploring Phonics (letter sounds) and Phonological awareness. Phonological awareness activities can
include rhyming practice, segmenting words into their individual
sounds (cat -> /c/ /a/ /t/), blending individual sounds to make words, substituting sounds and clapping syllables.
In Year 1 Literacy lessons extend their thinking and responses to books they listen to and read by themselves. This is when teachers read aloud (and have students help me read)
a big book or a story. This is a time to think aloud and discuss the story, explore comprehension and for enjoyment. Shared
reading can be used to teach decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension strategies.
Phonological Awareness continues as students begin to read CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant words) like t-a-p, then move on to read words
that start with bl, sl, and tr. Spelling patterns and blends are taught and practised.
Students are able to begin writing down the sounds they hear in words and writing
sentences that can be read by other people, using invented spelling - writing
the main sounds in the words.
Year 2 Literacy lessons extend students comprehension skills and strategies using predicting, summarising, making connections to the
text, questioning, inferring and visualising.
Phonological Awareness continues as students explore the different
vowels sounds - long and short plus exploring medial and final sounds. Writing expands further into recognising and using features
in grammar (nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives and related phrases), punctuation including direct speech and commas.
In Year 2 they are required to plan, write and create a variety of texts for different purposes and
audiences - many literacy lessons have writing opportunities for students to work on their writing skills.

The students have taken advantage of all the leaves in the playground to create awesome artwork. They loved going outside to collect their leaves and think about what they were creating.
Thank you for working hard and keep on learning. Jennine I’Anson - K-2 Assistant Principal (Rel.)
3 - 6 News
Parents and Carers.
It is great to be back in full swing at MPE. There was a really strange feeling within our
school when the kids weren’t here - it is wonderful having them all back on board. Most of
all, they seem excited to be back in their classrooms which is fantastic. I am lucky enough
to be spending a couple of hours inside each 3-6 classroom at the moment and can say that
everyone has settled back in extremely well.
Just a few things:
Leadership Team update. Unfortunately the Armstrong family left MPE last week, we
will miss Bonnie, Willow and Hendrik dearly. Hendrik was part of the 2020 Leadership
Team and was a current Prefect. We would like to announce that Riley Clarke of 5/6S
has taken his place for the rest of this year. Congratulations Riley!
Stage 3 camp expression of interest notes were due last week. We don’t need any
payments yet (you can pay if you wish). But, we need to know if your child is interested
in coming to the camp so we can start looking at confirming number with the Great
Aussie Bush Camp
Year 6 shirts were ordered last Monday - I have been told they will take approximately
4 weeks. They will hopefully be here around Week 8
Thanks to Ms I’Anson for organising Souths Cares and providing the zoom link for all
of MPE - the kids absolutely loved it!

Class chat with 3/4K and Ms Korfias
Dear MPE community,
This is my very first class chat and I can’t wait to share with our MPE community all the amazing
things we have been doing since returning to the classroom. Firstly I want to say how proud I am of my students over the period of online learning. Not only was it a difficult time for most of them to understand, they managed to work hard and get the work done! Most of all I would like to thank
the MPE community for their support and hard work at home – I being a parent myself know how difficult online learning was, so thank you.
Two amazing things came out of our online learning for our students - Reading Eggs and Mathletics! The students have been enjoying these websites and now use them within their
literacy and numeracy rotations in class. Students are also able to now use these websites for their homework.
3/4 K have been busy since returning to the classroom. This term we are focusing on persuasive writing – where our students need to persuade their audience on a particular topic. My class has
some strong opinions and it is so great to see them discussing and supporting their classmates! In Science we are looking at Earth and Space and linking this in perfectly with our Visual Arts
unit. Watch this space for some amazing artwork! We have also been working really hard on our multiplication in Maths. We have been learning all about homophones and synonyms. I am really proud of my students since being back in the classroom and all the hard work they have been
putting into their learning.
Here are some photos of 3/4 K being back in the classroom,
Miss Korfias

South Cares Incursion
Wednesday 3rd June
Today we had a Zoom incursion with Souths cares visiting K-2
and 3-6 via zoom. Alex from Souths Cares presented a program
about Hygiene. The program covered how to blow your nose,
cough into your arm, wash your hands and put tissues into the
bin straight away. She also spoke about showering or bathing
everyday and cleaning your teeth twice a day. All things we need
to keep ourselves clean and healthy.
Reggie Rabbit, the Rabbitohs mascot was there to say hello to
the children.
We are very grateful to Souths Cares for continuing their connection with our school and
creating a program to cater for our students and provide a platform to present their
program. Ms I’Anson

10 SIMPLE AND FUN NON-SCREEN ACTIVITIES THAT CHILDREN CAN DO AT HOME
What can you do when it is not a school day and you’re stuck at home?
Here are some fun ideas to choose from…
1. Get building! You could build a Lego model, a tower of playing cards or something else!
2. Thank a community hero. Think of someone that helps you in some way and write a short letter or draw a picture to thank them.
3. Design and make an obstacle course at home or in the garden. How fast can you complete it? 4. Can you create your own secret code? You could use letters, numbers, pictures or something else! Can you
get someone else to try and crack it? 5. Start a nature diary. Look out of the window each day and keep note of what you see. Birds, flowers, changes
in the weather, what else? 6. Hold a photo session. Use a camera to take some snaps. What will you photograph? Your pets, family
members, toys or flowers from the garden perhaps? 7. Build a reading den. Find somewhere cosy, snuggle up and read your favourite book!
8. Design and make a homemade board game and play it with your family. 9. Do something kind for someone. Can you pay them a compliment, make them something or help them with
a task? 10. List making! Write a list of things that make you happy, things you’re grateful for or things you are good at.
You could even bring in something that you design and make to show your class or you could take a photo of yourself to share. I’m sure your teachers and friends would love to hear all about your at home FUN adventures! Miss Irons Deputy Principal/ Instructional Leader (Rel)
