Pelham High School’s favorite newsletter team is back and better than ever! With
creative and intelligent new members, as well as three experienced returning mem-
bers, this semester’s Buzz should prove to
be the best issues yet. New staff members include freshmen, Delanie Aday, Casandra
Brown, and Harlee Motes; sophomores,
Jessie Adams, Cheyenne Brooks, and Wakeelah McIntyre; juniors,
Lexi Gillard, Ramsey Glass, Jaquan Green, Pamela Halliday, Court-
ney Hilliard, and Sherry Lam-
mons, and seniors, Kelly Rodg-ers and Jayla Young. Returning
to the staff for the second year are three juniors who lead the
class in the preparation of the
weekly Buzz; they include Christian Drake, sports editor; Yazmen McCaskill, asst.
editor, and Harli Singleton, editor. Mrs. Meg Whigham serves as the teacher,
editor, and sponsor of the PHS newsletter.
The Buzz journalism class is not just any ordinary writing class; it is a class where
the students let their creativity take con-
trol and then share it with their fellow PHS students each week. –By Jessie Adams,

Seventh grader, Elijah Earnhardt, from Mes-
quite, Texas, weighs 297 pound and is only 12
years old. He has been banned from Pee Wee
football because of his weight. He told FoxDFW
that he does not want to play middle school
football right now because of lack of experi-
ence. He wants to play Pee Wee football to get
some experience first to further his dream of
playing football. Since the other players are so
much smaller than he, he was kicked off the
team. His mother took the initiative by protest-
ing the decision against the removal of her
oversized son on the Mesquite Pee Wee Foot-
ball Association. -By

Whether you are a football fan or not, you have probably heard of Barry Sanders and
Hershel Walker, two greats of the game. One young man is already being compared
to these football legends, and he is just 11
years old! High schools are starting to recruit 11 year old Tahj Gary in Atlanta
and he is already playing with kids older
than he is on both the offensive and defen-sive sides of the ball. Tahj’s mother,
Gowins was a former track star preparing for the Sydney Olympics when she found
out she was three months pregnant with
twins. She said she was faced with a
choice: to continue her training or take on a new endeavor: motherhood. She chose
the latter. They (Tahj and TaJiah) both turned out to be little mini-mes, which I'm
very proud of," she said. Despite the
athletic skills of her children, Gowins insists education comes first in her home.

Two years ago, Casey Anthony was acquitted fin
the murder of her two year old daughter, Caylee Antho-
ny. Casey Anthony has just
now been freed from a one year sentence for a 2010
check writing fraud. “As of
Friday, August 24, 2012 at 12AM, no one can tell her
where to be and what time,” Anthony's attorney
Charles Greene told
ABCNews.com. Mrs. Antho-ny has checked in with her
probation officers monthly
for the past year. As of now the probation officers state
Mrs. Anthony is unem-ployed, and has not been
taking classes or doing
drugs or drinking alcohol. Greene said, ”It would be

productive work environment. Work-Based
Learning includes a student placement that
may be paid or unpaid positions. Work-Based
Learning provides students with opportunities
for instruction not only in academics, but also

In Ann Harbor, Michigan a very important project
is underway. The Univer-sity of Michigan is con-
ducting a study with
around 2,800 automo-biles that will potentially
allow vehicles to com-
municate with each other to help avoid crashes. A
wireless device is in-stalled within the vehicles
and then tested to see if the device really will
increase road safety. The prototype may also allow
red lights to turn green in
the case that no other vehicles are around.
More than 32,000 people
died last year in U.S. traffic crashes, down 1.7
percent from 2010. The U.S. Department of Trans-
portation and the Univer-
sity of Michigan have a $25 million dollar budget
and high hopes to contin-ue the decline of traffic
crashes in the future. –By

Everyone is born with blood flowing through their veins, But only a few people are born with ambition.
Everyone is given an individual name, But only the hard workers make something of it.
Sometimes people are afraid to push themselves harder,
They’re afraid to let their ambition shine through the horrifying dark-ness.
You should be able to show the world your greatness, your talent, or
your halo, regardless. Not everyone will accept you for you, but once you do your life will be
more at ease. Once you put your ambition in ignition,
you’ll realize that you’re the only person you need to please.
Some people are given the opportunity to fulfill their dreams, some have to take it.
No matter what other people say, you’ll have to put aside your doubts and go for your goal.
If you have enough determination, strength, and ambition you’ll make
it. By: Sherry Lammons

Mrs. Braswell’s 10th grade
honors literature class is
reading a novel entitled Of
Mice and Men by John
Steinbeck. The book takes
place during the 1930s by
the Salinas River in Sole-
dad, California. George
Milton is small, has slender
arms, and a bony nose,
while his accomplice, Len-
nie Small, is the exact
opposite, large, bearlike,
and mentally challenged.
These two men are desper-
ate in need of work, and
with Lennie, it is impossible
to remain for very long at a
job. George has known
Lennie for quite some time
and has taken Lennie under
his own wing. George and
Lennie want to “live off the
fatta the land” on a small
farm with animals and
crops, and their biggest
dream is to own their own
land. They want everything
to be perfect, kind of like a
Garden of Eden. Along the
way they meet new people
and make wrong decisions,
which causes George to
take desperate measures in
the end. Throughout this
novel the themes vary from
loneliness, hostility, friend-
ship, temptation, alienation,
choices, and lastly, hopeful-
ness to live the American
dream. -By Wakeelah

A New Generation of Future Business Leaders
Dream Girls is a
group for young
girls that need
e n c o u r a g i n g ,
have dreams and
goals, and need a little push. The group
was formed in November 2010 by Mrs.
Debra Hampton and Mrs. Evonne Simmons.
The purpose of Dream Girls is to help girls
graduate, assist them with personal prob-
lems, help them with everyday life, and
make them have a closer relationship with
God. This group benefits young girls by
building their self-confidence and helping
them realize they make a difference. Mrs.
Hampton got the name of the group when
she was watching a program, and it made
the point that most
peoples’ dreams are
crushed during high
school. “I wanted to do something about it,
so I formed Dream Girls,” said Mrs. Hamp-
ton. The Dream Girls do more than just
make sure they are happy; they also try to
spread joy to the community. They visit
nursing homes, visit the sick and do chores
for them, and they pray for others in need
of prayer. When asked if she ever felt like
creating Dream Girls was a mistake, she
replied “Everything has its ups and downs,
but it’s a process you have to stick with.”
She says it makes her feel great being able
to guide young girls in the right path and
having an influence on them. “It’s my job to
make sure Dream Girls keep their grades
up, have all their credits, and are doing the
right thing at all times.” Anyone looking
forward to inspiration, encouragement, and
staying on the right track can join Dream
Girls. Meetings take place on Tuesday and
Thursday mornings in the media center
from 7:30-7:55 AM. -By Sherry Lammons
