Boys leagues in Kenosha, OshkoshThe Badger Region is part-

nering with two men’s volleyball powerhouses to help grow boys volleyball in the state of Wiscon-sin.

Carthage College (NCAA Div. III) and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (NCVF Div. I) men’s volleyball teams are working with the Badger Region for this unique opportunity to get more boys playing volleyball at the middle school level.

The Badger Region sees this as a great opportunity because the Kenosha and Oshkosh areas do not have middle school volley-ball, and in Oshkosh there is no high school volleyball.

However both cities are home to two of the best NCAA Div. III and College Club teams, respec-tively, in the country.

Both leagues that are being organized for this fall offer one hour of instruction, in addition to a minimum of two games played each night of the league.

Players and staff from Car-thage and UW-Oshkosh men’s volleyball team will serve as instructors, coaches and officials for each of the dates.

All participants must have a Badger Region/USA Volleyball membership to participate. These memberships are only $15 and can be found at www.badger-volleyball.org and then click on

“membership.” Please sign up for a “summer membership” for this opportunity. The $15 member-ship is the ONLY cost for players or families for this league.

If players already have a USA Volleyball membership from playing club volleyball through-out the 2015-16 season, they do not need to purchase a separate membership.

This year, the UW-Oshkosh League will run 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 18, Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 in the Kolf Center at UW-Os-hkosh.

The Carthage College League will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 18, Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 9 at the Tarble Athletic Center, 2001 Alford Park Drive, Kenosha.

Space is limited to the first 60 athletes who sign up for the

league.Participants can go to the

home page of Badger Region (www.badgervolleyball.org) to register for either the Carthage or Oshkosh leagues. In addition to filling out the online middle school league sign up forms, par-ticipants should also make sure they have a membership while on the site.

Funding for these leagues is thanks to a grant the Badger Region Volleyball Association received from USA Volleyball at the start of 2016.

USA Volleyball announced Milwaukee will be the site of the 2016 Junior Beach Tour National Championships July 22-24 at Bradford Beach, 2400 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive.

In addition, Bradford Beach will be the site of a Central Open June 18.

The Junior Beach Tour is a USA Volley-ball-sponsored series that weaves its way through 24 states with close to 60 events in all.

The tour is open to boys and girls ages 10 to 18. The age divisions are 12-and-un-der, 14-and-under, 16-and-under and 18-and-under in both the club and open divisions.

Athletes have the opportunity to qualify for the open division of the championships by winning a bid at one of the stops on the tour in the open division. The club division does not offer the opportunity to win a bid to the open division.

The Junior Beach Tour National Champi-onship will have an open division for those who qualify and a club division for those who do not.

To register for the Central Open, go to www.usavolleyball.org, click on “Beach” and then “Junior Beach Tour,” where you can see the schedule and click on the appropriate date/location.

Cost to register is $60 for a team before June 8, $70 before June 22 and $90 before June 24.

Hotel information for both events is now available at www.badgervolleyball.org.

Big beach events coming to Region

The Badger Region Volleyball Association is organizing a FREE sand volleyball clinic for boys in middle school through high school that will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Thurs-day, June 16, 2016.

To register for the June 16 boys sand volleyball clinic, go to www.badgervol-leyball.org and click on the story in the “News” section of the homepage.

Last year, over 30 athletes attended the boys sand clinic.

The training session will be led by longtime beach player and coach Gary Tome, who is also a member of the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference Hall of Fame.

Tome has coached high school for 25 years and has been the director of beach junior development at various organization for the last five summers. He has played at the Open level of the EVP, MVP and AVP-Next.

In addition, the event is run in preparation for the 2016 Junior Beach Tour stop June 18 that is coming to Milwaukee — the Central Open — which is still open for registration.

The Junior Beach Tour Champion-ships are also coming to Milwaukee July 22-24. Register for that event by going to www.usavolleyball.org.

Center Court Sports Complex in Wauke-sha and the Badger Region Volleyball Association are celebrating the seventh year of existence of the Wisconsin Youth Vol-leyball League (WYVL).

The mission, right from the beginning has  been to advance the sport of youth vol-leyball in the State of Wisconsin and in so doing advancing the area high  schools with a strong feeder program.

Young players benefit by hav-ing fun learning fundamental skills while  playing in a structured competi-tive environment that helps to pro-mote the high school programs that are  involved.  The WYVL offers divi-sions for both boys and girls in grades 5

through 8. Organizers recommend teams who partici-

pate in the WYVL be a “sign-up” team rather than a “tryout” team to foster maximum participation and development.

League play will be on Saturdays and Sunday at Center Court in September and October. Each “league” will be broken down into grade level. For example, fifth grade plays against fifth grade and sixth grade plays against sixth grade and so on. For the 2016 season, both “A” and “B” divisions will be offered at the 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. There will be only one division for the 5th-grade level.

Organizers hope to offer boys divisions at the 5th/6th and the 7th/8th grade levels.

Since this is meant to be a learning expe-rience, organizers are looking for parents to help coach and manage teams. In so doing, high school coaches can then solely con-centrate on their own high school programs during the WYVL seasons.

Badger Region will once again be offering free USAV IMPACT Coaching Certification in August to all WYVL coaches.

Have questions about the league? Contact Tom Jurczyk at Center Court via phone at 262-548-3838 or [email protected].

Have questions about getting a membership for the league? Contact Sara Voigt in the Bad-ger Region office at 262-349-9785 or at [email protected].

New program gives coaches more training

“The best way to learn is through a good mentor.”

Over the next few years, the Badger Region will help deliver information to coaching mentors throughout the region, to help the next generation of coaches get better, faster. We want to help place our expe-rienced coaches in a position to share their knowledge, see new coaches in action, and guide coaches toward proven methods.

The region has five FREE mentor-training clinics to give away. At each two-hour clinic, all club coaches partic-ipate, while three coaches are trained to be mentors by an Advisor Coach. We have done a good portion of the work for the new mentors.

In 2015, I AM Volleyball Club was the first club to take

part as a guinea pig in the 3C program. According to Master Coach BJ LeRoy, who is helping write the manual for the 3C program, “The I AM folks were excellent. They wanted all the tips and critiques they could get and were happy to have us there. We all learned some new things last night.”

Mentor information comes from the latest High Perfor-mance clinics, and other USA Volleyball Education resources that are hard to attend in per-son. Please consider claiming a clinic just as the season starts to get underway.

Contact BJ LeRoy ([email protected]) or the Badger Re-gion Office for more informa-tion. For the full 3C website being started by the Region, go to: http://badgervolleyball.org/coaches-coaching-coaches/
