Herersquos what Irsquove been Reading
In Miranda Beverly-Whittemorersquos Bittersweet Mabel Dagmar accepts an invitation from her college roommate
Ev to spend the summer on a lake in Vermont When she arrives at the lake Mable discovers a world unlike
any shersquos ever known Each privileged family of the Winslow clan occupies a different cabin and each of them
proves to be intimidating and mysterious Over the summer months several events will force Mabel to face
some dark truths of her own which push her into adulthood leaving any trace of innocence behind Reminiscent
of Fitzgeraldrsquos The Great Gatsby a very real distinction between the ldquohavesrdquo and the ldquohave-notsrdquo is apparent at
the familyrsquos compound called ldquoWinlochrdquo But amongst the fine linens famous original paintings and sailboats
hide some very disturbing secrets that unfold like a runaway train until the final chapters have you holding on
tight waiting for the inevitable crash at the end
Bittersweet and other new titles are waiting for you at your Epworth library Stop by and check them out I
look forward to seeing you ndashKathy Loewenberg

New Statues Help Tell the Story of DWC
Near the front entrance to Divine Word College stand statues of two of the most revered men in the Society of the Divine WordmdashSt Arnold Janssen and St Joseph Freinademetz On the other side of the building in a shaded area of the courtyard stands a statue of MarymdashOur Lady of La Vangmdashholding baby Jesus Together they help tell the story of DWC The seven-foot tall solid marble statues are gifts to the college from three anonymous benefactors The marble was quarried and then chiseled into shape by skilled sculptors in Vietnam Together these new campus landmarks will help people understand the connection between DWC and the worldwide SVD Born in Germany St Arnold Janssen founded the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in Steyl Holland in 1875 and two orders of religious women the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters (SSpS) in 1889 and the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters (SSpSAP) in 1896 In 1895 he sent Bro Wendelin Meyer SVD to the US where he helped establish Techny and developed support for the society in Iowa The SVD has grown to be the largest Catholic missionary order in the world St Arnold was canonized on October 5 2003 by Pope John Paul II St Joseph Freinademetz was born in Tyrol located in northern Italy near Switzerland He became a diocesan priest but felt a call to be a missionary He joined the newly formed SVD and was one of the first two priests to go on mission traveling to China with Fr John Anzer in 1879 Fr Freinademetz remained there the rest of his life and was much loved by the people of China He was canonized with St Arnold on October 5 2003 by Pope John Paul II Mary Our Lady of La Vang is said to have appeared to a group of early Vietnamese Catholics who faced persecution in the late 1700s Seeking refuge in a rain forest at La Vang many became ill While they were praying the rosary one night Mary appeared to them in a tree carrying baby Jesus She told them to boil the leaves of the nearby trees and to drink the liquid which cured them Churches were built in honor of the apparition and the event is widely celebrated The Blessed Motherrsquos presence in the courtyard reflects the connection DWC has with other cultures The SVD has missionaries in 70 countries around the world The reverence for her is shared by all Divine Word College is honored to have these wonderful statues to help tell the story of the college and its legacy around the world

The Big Picture My family has a farm near Austin Texas This farm founded over one hundred years ago began from just a few acres My great-great-great grandparents made their way over from Sweden and got a job in central Texas working on the railroad Over time from their saved earnings they built a farm that would be a source of life for their descendants far beyond their imagination They bought the land piece by piece until their farm was complete I wonder if they knew that they were creating a legacy through all of that hard work I wonder if they knew that with each new acre they were providing a future for their family I imagine that they simply went about the rhythm of their days caring for their families and tending to the land and livestock As many of you know that doesnrsquot allow for much spare time
I wish I could go back in time and pop in on them when theyrsquore having a rough day working on the railroad just to say ldquoThis is all worth it You are part of something bigger than you can imagine Donrsquot give uprdquo Keeping the big picture in mind is so difficult to do when we are in the throes of everyday life Often when wersquore trudging through struggles or overwhelmed by busyness we canrsquot comprehend how all of this matters But it does It matters God is using every moment of every day to create a world where love con-quers all where hate withers away and hope flourishes
On days when you feel worn out and overwhelmed remember that your ordinary life is part of something extraordinary What you do matters You are part of that big picture creating something beautiful by the grace of God

WIPES CLOG PIPES The past few years have seen the introduction of more and more
disposable wipe products for a variety of household uses Unlike toilet paper these products do not break
down once they are flushed They can cause blockages in your home sewer lines resulting in the backup of
sewage into the home On a larger scale when these products make their way into the public sewer system
they collect together and cause clogs in the collector lines and get tangled in sewer pumps
Help protect your home and the sewer system by never flushing any consumer item other than toilet paper
down the toilet regardless of what the packaging promises If itrsquos not toilet paper it should not go
in the toilet

effect on the lifestyle choices they make and
d) The tobacco industry advertises at and sponsors events to foster a connection between tobacco use and community
events and
e) Tobacco products (extends to all types of tobacco and nicotine products) once consumed in public spaces are
often discarded on the ground requiring additional maintenance expenses diminish the beauty of outdoor facilities

First of all on behalf of all of the members of the Epworth Fire Department I would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who made our annual fundraisers a success We conduct two events each year The annual dance on Memorial Day weekend supports the ambulance side of the firehouse and the annual picnic supports the fire and other operations The dance was extremely profitable this year due to the tremendous response from our annual mailing The dance night itself was not a huge success We discussed and ultimately decided that next year we will try the dance on Friday evening May 22nd rather than on Saturday We plan to focus a little more on catching people before they leave town for the extended weekend and also try to start a little earlier in the evening Again thank you for your continued support of the annual dance As far as the picnic goes we avoided the rain ndash but not the fish flies The silent auction remains the profit center of the evening and that would not be possible without the generous donors and those in attendance to bid on the items The creativity of the items sparked the interest of the bidders We had a wonderful variety of handcrafted items which are always a big hit at the picnic Our organization is extremely fortunate to receive such great community support We thank you for your cash donations attendance auction item donations and thank you if you helped us work in a stand The Epworth Fire Department would also like to thank the Dubuque Racing Association Mystique Casino and the Diamond Jo Casino for the 2014 DRA grant received by the Rural Board The Epworth Community Fire Department (Rural Board) was awarded $350000 to pay for air monitoring equipment for carbon monoxide detector calls and also fire calls 2014 has been a busy year so far for the fire department During the first six months we responded to 109 calls for service which is up about 15-20 from an average year Our professional volunteers are extremely dedicated to meet the needs of our community The Epworth Fire Department Ambulance service provides emergency and non-emergency transport services to our citizens Please remember to call 911 for any type of ambulance service fire or law enforcement The Epworth Fire Department is looking for willing and able members to volunteer for the fire department and the ambulance service Fall classes will be starting soon and the department covers the cost of training expenses Volunteering for the fire department is similar to taking on another job There are times when you are needed and have to be here no matter what else is happening You can ask anyone of our members and I am sure they will agree that there is no greater feeling in the world knowing you have helped your family neighbor or friends in their time of need The words ldquothank yourdquo received from a patient or family provides far more satisfaction than a paycheck ever could It makes the training all worth it and we invite you to visit with us to consider being a member If you are interested please see one of the fire department members for an application packet or call the fire station at 563-876-3321 We wish you and your family a wonderful summer and stay safe happy and healthy
