WELCOME TO POPULAR WOODWORKING'S WEEKLY WOOD NEWS After Black & Decker gobbled up Porter-Cable and Delta, I didn't think things could get weirder. Yesterday's news changed my definition of weird. Stanley Works is acquiring Black & Decker in a multi-billion dollar deal. While it's too early to tell what this merger will mean for tool-users, it is time to look around and take stock of what is happening around us.

After a bit of thought, I concluded that this news about Stanley isn't actually weird at all. Any student of the company's history could tell you that Stanley has grown through aggressive acquisitions since its founding in 1843.

Companies that competed with Stanley in the 19th century usually ended up getting bought and absorbed by Stanley. But here's the good news: There has been and always will be competition in the tool market. When Stanley stopped paying close attention to the high-end woodworking market, competitors such as Veritas and Lie-Nielsen flourished.

So I'm not particularly worried about the future of tool manufacturing. In fact I won't worry until Home De-pot renames the tool crib in its stores to the "Stanley crib." Christopher Schwarz

HOLIDAY TOY PROGRAM What an outstanding display of toys at the Christmas Party on De-cember 10 at Berwick Manor! Keepsake Boxes, Duck Walkers, Mirrors, Doll Cradles, Puzzles, Stepstools, Desk & Chair Sets, Trikes, Crayon Holders, Golf Clubs, Catapults, Boats, Airplanes, Cars and Trucks of all descriptions and many more items were

there for all to see and admire. Of course, we all enjoy the chance to show off our skills and creativity but even more importantly our efforts help put smiles on the faces of chil-dren who oftentimes don’t have a lot to smile about in their lives. Representatives from four of the five agencies we support attended the Christmas Party and they were effusive in their praise for the efforts of our group. Capt. Laro from the Salvation Army mentioned how the durability of the toys we donate makes them spe-cial to the recipients. Stan Smith from Alpha Athletic Club said that people who have been helped still come up to him years later to express their thanks for the wooden toys. Ms. Susan Brehm is new in her job as Director of St. Vincent Family Center and was as-tounded at the quantity and quality of our donation to her organization. Kim Ward from Gladden Community House talked about the current economic situation forcing people who have not needed help in the past to now seek out assistance from their agency. Most of us live relatively comfortable lives and it is both humbling and rewarding to help others in their time of need. We had excellent participation from the membership this year in the Toy Program. Of special note is the number of people who worked together in groups to make toys. There were at least seven groups active that I am aware of and probably a few more that I’m not. Working in groups not only helps to increase the total number of toys that we can donate but also strengthens bonds of friendship between our members, resulting in a stronger and more energetic Club. At the Party, I announced the number of toys contributed as 1,898. Remember, I also said the number was subject to audit. It appears that there may have been some dou-ble counting due to one of the groups completing duplicate cards. Also, there have been a few members who have contributed toys since the Party. We continue to try to arrive at an accurate count but a best estimate at this time is about 1,700. I’ll have a final tally at the January meeting. Whatever the number it was an extremely successful effort this year. Thanks very much to all who participated for your generosity. It’s not too early to start thinking about next year! Dan will begin taking orders for wheels at the January meeting. Mike Quinn

Delaware area sub-chapter News Page 9 Plane News

WOCO Delaware sub-chapter NEWS!

Last Saturday morning about 10 of us met with WOCO President Chuck Caranna here in Delaware to go over a number of items with him and to give him the opportunity to get to know the Delaware area sub-chapter members first hand. If you missed it you missed a great get-together!

Chuck told us that he would like to get the WOCO web site "cleaned up" and easier to use. Several members com-mented on difficulties experienced in finding things on the site as well as suggesting things which would further en-hance it's value.

We reviewed the proposed new Resource Directory. I had been furnished a copy of the old edition (1993) by Chris Amatos and it was passed around for review. The author of that 16 year old100+ page masterpiece was none other than Chuck Caranna! We all agreed that the new web version of the Directory does not need to be as extensive as the original thanks to today's access to the Internet for current nformation. Chuck complimented us on our efforts to compile information to be included in the new directory and gave us the go ahead to get with Santanu Lahiri and get it added to the web site as soon as possible. We will also make certain that information is added to the next WOCO Newsletter to let all members know of its availability and to ask them to send additions and suggestions to Joe Kunzman for handling. Some of the suggestions made for additions to the new Resource Directory were: (1) In-clude the website addresses of other wood oriented clubs (carvers, turners, other WOCO type organizations), (2) Discounts offered by suppliers to WOCO members, (3) Alphabetical listing of all businesses or organizations listed in the Directory, (4) Woodworking plans, and (5) Finishing materials sources and methods of application. These can be added to the new on-line directory at some point in the future.

Dan Strohecker talked about our sub chapter's united efforts to make chair risers and toys this year. Chuck com-mented that WOCO's contributions of both will undoubtedly be considerably increased thanks to our efforts. For curiosity sake Dan is going to try to determine exactly how many toys we, both through our group efforts and our individual efforts, have made this year. Gotta be quite the number! Before the meeting ended Don Wenzlik sug-gested we take a couple of minutes and decide what toys we wanted to work on together for next year! The list we came up with includes mirrors, jewelry boxes, rocking horses, cars, dump trucks (lots of pieces), race cars and great lake freighters. Boy, what a slave driver Don is!

Dan commented that we have finished making 85 sets of chair risers and would have had more except we ran out of sources for lengths of 2x6 and 2x8's. Chuck told us he would get in touch with the president of the Columbus BIA and ask him to help us in our quest to locate more wood for this project. Dan agreed to be the contact with job sites and to pick up available wood. Good news!

Chuck informed us that WOCO does have an insurance policy providing us all with limited liability coverage for certain activities. He is uncertain if this protects us as individuals against someone being injured by a toy distributed through WOCO. Mike Quinn will help determine this through his son the lawyer. Another option would be to in-corporate as a not-for-profit 501C organization. Mike's son has agreed to do that for us no charge.

Dan informed us he has heard from Pat Tiberi regarding pending legislation requiring toys to be tested and certified as meeting legislative standards for safety and having lab certifications not to contain lead. According to Tiberi's response neither one of those rules will apply to wooden toys made by WOCO for free distribution. Dan will fur-nish Mike Quinn with a copy of that letter for review and filing by Mike's son. Thanks for doing that, Dan!

This is also an invitation for anyone who would like to participate in the WOCO Delaware sub-chapter activities, to call me at 740.363.8018. Everyone is welcome!

Thanks! Steve Sattler 740.363.8018
