Kings Family results at Kid of the Cross All over for another year. With the numbers being low it was pleasing to see the calibre of riders here with close to 14 of the top 20 kids in the state here in the combined 125/250 class. It started Friday night with a few bike issues resulting in Kacey having to ride Taine’s practice bike in the 125 class (first real race on a 125) instead of the 105 he wanted to ride, and Taine’s 250 not being ready so he could only ride his 125.

What I did notice was the respect and manners the juniors showed to everyone, on the track there was some close, fast and clean racing, but as soon as they crossed the finish line they were talking and laughing with and about each other. It was good to see.

With the qualifying races done, it was time for the Kid of the Cross which is a combined 125/250 class. Looking at lap times the top 5 kids would have done very well if they raced the seniors on Sunday, there is definitely some quick kids out there.

Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Kacey’s results 85cc 1st 1st 1st 125cc 2nd 1st 3rd

Final 9th 12th 11th overall Taine’s results 125cc 1st 1st 1st

Final 5th 6th 5th overall

Kacey also managed to get best junior local rider which he reminds his brother about a bit. Ricky didn’t race as he has just had the plate out of his leg so he was sweep rider for two days, doing around 80 laps, so he got plenty of riding in. I would like to make a special mention to the people who help and support the boys with their racing. It definitely makes it a lot easier.

Banks of Southern Cross

Southern Cross was established for over two years before a trading bank set up business in town. Prior to this there was a constant shortage of money for day to day trading and paying wages.

To overcome the shortage of money, a system of IOU’s was introduced. The mining companies paid their workers with IOU’s and these were honoured by the local shopkeepers with a further IOU given as change if necessary. The IOU’s were referred to as shinplasters as the men pushed them into their socks or boots for safekeeping. They became so accepted that miners viewed gold coins with suspicion when paid in these.

The ‘order system’ had its shortcomings, however, and complaints led to the Commercial Bank establishing a branch in Southern Cross. The directors saw it as an ‘experiment’ in view of the great distance from Perth and lack of telegraphic communication. They would operate a trading bank and take possession of all gold for safekeeping.

During December 1890 bank manager Charles Augustus Saw and his assistant Nathanial Armstrong arrived by coach with an armed escort and set about obtaining suitable premises - a difficult task in a mostly canvas town.

The grand opening just before Christmas was full of drama. Firstly the premises caught fire, and then a playful willy-willy took off the verandah, nearly distributing the bank notes before time. Matters were put right and business began on 24th December 1890.

The noted explorer David Carnegie had much to say about the bank, describing it as a small iron shanty with a hessian partition dividing it into office and living quarters, ‘the latter a hopeless chaos of cards, candle ends, whisky bottles, blankets, safe keys, gold specimens, and cooking utensils.’ His description of Southern Cross was ‘the reverse of pleasant.’

The poor condition of the rented premises led to the Commercial Bank erecting their own building of brick batts on lot 36 where the ANZ bank now stands.

Soon the town could boast two banks, with the WA Bank opening in October 1893. They set up in rented premises alongside the Club Hotel before erecting their own premises on lot 37, where they have remained ever since. The weatherboard bank was erected by Bunning brothers at a cost of £1,000, ‘with a strong room 6 x 10 feet.’

Southern Cross slumped for a number of years when investment money was diverted to the richer fields around Kalgoorlie. This led to the Commercial Bank closing its doors in 1906. With the discovery of Bullfinch the branch re-opened in 1911, however the reprieve was short lived and the branch closed a year later when Bullfinch folded.

Next it was the National Bank’s turn to try its luck in Southern Cross. A rise in the gold price plus the discovery of Mount Palmer, led to the National Bank opening a branch on lot 11 during 1935. But the depression and Second World War caused a downturn in mining and the branch closed in 1942.

The ANZ was the next bank to come to town. It had recently absorbed the Commercial Bank and it was almost like a home-coming. They set up shop during 1966 on lot 36 where the Commercial Bank originally stood, and erected a new building five years later. Lot 36 has a proud history of banking. It was to this little corrugated iron bank that Arthur Bayley brought 554 ounces of almost pure gold when he found Coolgardie, and started the greatest gold rush in history. The ANZ continues operating to this day.

As for the WA Bank on lot 37, it was absorbed by the Bank of NSW during the 1930’s and then in 1982 renamed Westpac. The original weatherboard building constructed in 1894 was pulled down in 1971 and replaced with the present structure. Thankfully the iron door off the old strong room was saved and is now on display at the local museum. The old brass scales used for weighing gold was also saved and is still in use. If only these scales could tell its tales.

WA grain, seed and hay growers invited to comment on the operations of the Grains, Seeds in Industry Funding Scheme

The Grains, Seeds and Hay Industry Funding Scheme (IFS) Management Committee is

conducting a survey of grain, seed and hay growers to discover industry views on the

operations of the scheme.

The scheme uses funding authorised under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act

2007 (BAM Act), whereby producers raise funds to tackle priority pests and diseases. The

scheme is overseen by a Management Committee of growers appointed by the Minister for

Agriculture and Food. All grain, seed and hay growers in the South West of the State

participate in the scheme, unless they have opted out.

Your opinion is important. The IFS is industry-driven - the committee relies on input from

industry to determine which pest and disease threats require action.

The survey is open until 4pm Friday, 18 August 2017 and can be accessed at

surveymonkey.com/r/GSHIFS

The survey can also be completed over the phone or as a hard copy – please contact the IFS

executive officer.

For more information about the scheme go to agric.wa.gov.au/n/1442 or contact IFS

executive office Rebecca Heath on +61 (0)8 9690 2171 or [email protected]
