Volume 17 Issue 4 March 2009
Celebrating 100 years of UNITY, WISDOM, FRIENDSHIP, ACHIEVEMENT 1908-2008
Celebrating
Our Centennial
The highlight of the yearlong celebration
recognizing the 100th anniversary of the
founding of the Faculty Auxiliary in
1908 will be the upcoming Centennial
Gala banquet on Sunday, May 3rd. Gala
coordinators Kay Spelman and Tish
Tukey are planning a very special event
at the UW Club. Barbara Glicksberg,
with the aid of today’s online search
tools, is assembling a list of former
members to contact. Invitations will be
mailed out soon. Because our Gala is on
a Sunday, parking will be free. Trans-
portation will be available.
The UW Men’s Glee Club will provide
the entertainment for the evening. The
Men's Glee Club was revived in 2007 by
Music Professor Steve Demorest after a
53-year absence. Tish Tukey, gala co-chair, with members of the Centennial Planning Committee:
Eva Hanzeli, Jane Halver, Mary Kenny, and Barbara Scattergood. The next com-
mittee meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. on March 10, at the home of Carol Hol.
The new glee club, which now boasts 40 members, made its debut at the Nov. 17 Husky football game, where they performed with the
band before the game and sang The Star Spangled Banner to open it.

Board Seeks Nominations
We are looking for new people interest-
ed in joining the UWFA Board. Serving
on the Board is a lot of fun. I find it
quite rewarding to work with such tal-
ented and dedicated women. While most
current Board members will continue to
serve next year, we have a few openings:
a co-chair to work with Ruth Eller in
planning programs and special events
and a chair in charge of publicity. If you
have an interest or know of someone
who you think will do a good job ,
please contact me, Vera Wellner, Presi-
dent, at 206 323-4007 or via email at

Century Circle
The many contributions from our mem-
bers and friends to the Century Circle,
established for this celebratory year,
resulted in a tidy sum of $ 9145. The
money will be applied to full tuition
scholarships for grateful UW students in
2008 and 2009. Scholarships will be
particularly welcome in these trying
economical times. The Centennial Plan-
ning Committee wishes to thank every-
one who has contributed to making this
special anniversary fund an enormous
success. It would be great to reach an
even $10,000 by the Gala Banquet.

Spring Lecture Series
March 11
Dr. Sam Wasser
The March lecture will
feature Dr. Sam Wasser,
a pioneer of non-invasive
wildlife monitoring
methods. Dr. Wasser
developed the scat detec-
tion dog program. Hav-
ing pioneered the devel-
opment and application
of many of the fecal-
based hormone and genetic techniques
that are widely used today, Dr. Wasser
developed a sampling method that in-
creases sample acquisition over remote
areas. Modified narcotics detection dog
methods are used to train dogs to locate
scat from endangered species. Scat de-
tection dogs are now being used to en-
hance sample collections over extensive
and remote landscapes, for use in a wide
variety of population-based genetic and
physiological studies. Dr. Wasser is di-
rector of Center for Conservation Biolo-
gy.
April 8
“Get Fresh with Local Foods”
The April lecture will feature Acacia
Lawson. Acacia is dedicated to support-
ing local agriculture personally and pro-
fessionally. Through her business, Home
Grown Nutrition, Acacia teaches adults
and families about nutrition and cooking
with local and seasonal foods. She coor-
dinates Harvest of the Season, a farm-to-
school program that brings local produce
into low-income classrooms and helps
children learn about where their food
comes from while preparing a healthy
seasonal recipe.
Lectures are free and do not require res-
ervations. However, if you would like to
have dinner before hand at 6:00, please
call the UW Club, 206-543-0437, by
Monday before the event.
Change in Newsletter Publication
Schedule
The UWFA usually publishes its news-
letter five times a year: on the first of
September, November, January, March
and May. To be included, items must be
sent to the editor by the middle of the
previous month. However, the final is-
sue of this year, the Centennial May
issue, will be published on April 15 and
items should be received by the editor
by April 4th. This so that the Centennial
Planning Committee will have an oppor-
tunity to reach members before the Gala.
Please send items for the newsletter to
