The Knights of Columbus is a family-oriented fraternal service society of practical Catholic men.

Chaplain’s Letter

Dear Brother Knights,

The renovations and struc-

tural repairs in the church base-

ment necessitated the complete

removal of the meeting room

and kitchen facilities. The old meeting room

was 20’ x 34’ minus the space used by a pi-

ano, stacked tables and chairs on the west

side and a row of tables along the east side.

On February 17, 2017 contractors in-

stalled a new T-Bar ceiling and new lighting

in the rectory basement living room. This

space is 17’ x 22’ minus the space used by

the fireplace hearth, a water cooler with bot-

tled water and 3’ x 8’ cabinet-countertop

with a microwave, coffee maker and small

fridge. The resultant space can easily ac-

commodate chairs and tables for at least two

dozen adults. The washroom facilities are

working and available as before. We finally

have a new meeting room which is available

for regular Knight of Columbus, Parish

Council and Finance Council meet-

ings ..

Sincerely in-through-with Christ,

Fr. Barry+

Women Priests? Why are women not allowed to be ordained into

the Catholic priesthood?

Here is a recent answer from a monsignor

speaking on behalf of a Canadian archbishop, “On the

question of the ordination of women, expert scholar-

ship and the writings of the early Church Fathers

clearly show that while women exercised a vital and

irreplaceable role in the early Church, they were never

ordained to the ministerial priesthood or episcopacy.

This decision by the Church stems from the decision

of Our Lord himself in his choice of the Twelve.”

Put in that context, who would question the wis-

dom of our Lord in whatever he decided to do. As a

Christian, I wouldn’t. But allow me to look a bit closer

at the Church’s decision if indeed it stems from the

Lord’s choice of disciples.

The Twelve were white, unschooled Jewish

men, some of whom were married. Why did the

Church allow non-white, non-Jewish and often learned

men into the priesthood? If the decision stemmed from

the Lord’s choice, then the Church should have al-

lowed married men too. (Earlier, married men may be

ordained to priesthood. Until the twelfth century,

priests, bishops and 39 popes were married. Move-

ments for celibacy started because of inheritance prob-

lems and celibacy was imposed following the Second

Lateran Council in 1139. Not quite in accord with the

Lord!) .

I suppose when the first black was ordained .

Pancake Brunch at St. Mary’s

On Sunday, December 11, 2016, Council held

the pancake brunch for the Annual General Meeting

of St. Mary’s parish. The following members and

family helped: Bing Alejandria,

nel Urbiztondo, Jim and Susan

a Catholic priest, an argument was placed that

there were no blacks among the Lord’s disci-

ples. Similarly, there were no Italians, Ameri-

cans, Canadians or Filipinos among the

Twelve. How did the Church overcome the ar-

gument?

The Lord’s choice of the twelve was

based more on their beliefs and faith. That they

were all white Jewish men speaks more of the

times than prejudice. Two thousand years ago

in Palestine, long before the Dark Ages, a non-

Jew was either a black slave or a stranger from

other lands. I suppose none of these would be

good in the Lord’s mind to spread the word or

to lead believers in the Holy Land. And women

were treated as chattel. Indeed, Paul had time

and again warned that women should not speak

or lead men (see for example 1 Corinthians 14:

34-35).

This cultural and social prejudice against

women goes deep. In olden times, women were

considered inferior to men physically (because

they are smaller in size), intellectually and

emotionally (might is right). This is the same

prejudice that has kept women from leading a

nation or becoming a leader in her chosen field

of endeavour. But we have gone a long way

from that or we would not have seen the emer-

gence of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of

U. K., Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India,

Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan or

President Cory Aquino of the Philippines. (continue to p. 4)

CONDOLENCES

To Pat and family of

Brother Alexander J. Eberle who passed away on December 16, 2016

at the age of ninety. Alex was

A fourth degree Knight.

(continued from p. 2)

I like to think that every priest is

called upon by the Holy Spirit to pursue a re-

ligious life, to become a priest. Naturally,

similar things could have happened to young

girls. An example would be St. Therese of

Lisieux.

The argument that the Lord did not

have women disciples seems to be a red her-

ring, convenient and dismissive but not con-

ducive to solving an increasingly pestering

problem of our Church in the twenty first

century.

Is it time that the Church considers the ordination of women to Catholic priesthood more seriously? ELK

Message from our Grand Knight

Dear Brother Knights,

During this time of Lent let us con-

tinue on our faith journey as Knights of Co-

lumbus. We are challenged to walk with Jesus.

Lent is a time for us to reflect on our journey.

Have you fallen off the path? What can you

do to get back on? Here are some ideas:

- Attend a reconciliation service during

the 40 days of Lent.

- Get involved in K of C fundraising so you can help

the less fortunate.

- Reach out to your Brothers and their families to help

with their journey.

- Enrich your Lenten journey through the undertak-

ing of simple acts of kindness.

Let’s walk together on that path and feel the re-

newal of Lent in our hearts and our lives.

Remember to attend the 95th Annual State Con-

vention being held at Resurrection Parish and Holy Child

Parish on April 28th, 29th and 30th. This is an excellent

opportunity for fraternalism and meeting new Knights and

their families.

I would also like Santo Nino to consider hosting a

First (Admission) Degree in the upcoming months. This

would be a small evening event to recruit new members into

the council and host other councils from Regina. Please call

me at 306-541-8894 or email me at [email protected]

with any questions.

Message from our District Deputy

Rob Chapple

Cooperation One of the things that amazed me when I was

growing up in the Philippines was the incredible resil-

iency and capacity for teamwork that I witnessed one

day when I was walking home from school. We lived

in a remote area away from the main city so all around

us were fields and hills and rural communities. By

chance, I happened upon this house that was being

moved from one location to another. The building was

propped up on lengths of bamboo and carried by

around 40 people and there were about 5 or 6 people

following. These were the replacements for carriers

who needed to rest a bit. This went on throughout the

journey. They finally got to their destination and set

the house down. After this, the ladies brought refresh-

ment and everyone partook of the picnic, including me.

It was an experience I’ll always remember. Can

we do the same for our council? .

JLA

Dear Brother Knights,

First of all, I would like to thank

Bro. Jimmy Alvarez for accepting his

appointment as our new Financial Sec-

retary. With his background in account-

ing, I know we are in good hands.

"The Men They Called Knights" - this is the

pamphlet we receive when we enter the 1st degree,

now known as the Admission Degree. What a pres-

tigious title! But for every title, there is an equivalent

responsibility. Be it a doctor, engineer, accountant,

secretary, cleaner, etc., everybody has a role in the

community or organization, else we become a bur-

den. This season of lent, this is the perfect time to

reflect on the what we accomplished and on what we

can do more for the order and the church.

As a council, we continue to accomplish big

feats and plan for more milestones. And I would like

to congratulate the council for that. Members who

want to be more involved in our upcoming activities

may contact any officers listed in this newsletter.

In Christ,

Heintje Noel de Sosa, GK
