Year 13 and 14 students from the Art & Design Department at the Abbey attended a print making workshop by Bill Penney - anAssociate Lecturer in Printmaking and Head of Admissions Tutor forthe Foundation Course in Art & Design at the University of Ulster in Belfast. The boys visited Newry High School on Friday 23rdNovember where they carried out a series of prints based on their

own individual themes, under the guidance of Mr Penney. Mr Penneyhas a valuable insight into the requirements for entry onto Art &Design courses and spoke to the boys about interview skills andwhat to include in a successful portfolio. The students allthoroughly enjoyed this experience of working with a practising artist.

Dragon’s Den 2012

In September, our current year 13 Business Studies students took part in the NewryJunior Chamber of Commerce Dragon’s Den competition. Each student had to come upwith a marketable business proposition, develop a business plan and pitch their idea toa panel of ex Abbey Dragons – Brendan Malone and Gavin Short. Initially thecompetition was within school and following that the school winner went on torepresent the Abbey in the schools’ area final. Our winner was Stephen Mc Kay, who onfinals day, demonstrated his business acumen by delivering a convincing pitch for his‘Lifesaver’ idea and confidently stood up strong to the quick fire interrogation of thefour local entrepreneur dragons. It was a fantastic experience for all our boys.

Sixth and Seventh Year pupils from both the Abbey and theSacred Heart Grammar School, took part in a road accidentdemonstration as part of Northern Ireland Road Safety week.Members of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the PoliceService of Northern Ireland and the Ambulance Service came to theschool on Thursday 22nd November 2012, to target young driverswith their hard hitting campaign.

The afternoon long session got underway with a demonstration inthe school yard of how the Emergency Services respond to a roadaccident. Seventh Year pupils, Oisín Mc Evoy and Jonathan O Hare, agreed to sit in the vehicle as the members of the Fire Service cutthem out of a car. The demonstration was thought-provoking for theincreasing number of young drivers attending both schools as theygot to see and hear, at first hand, the sights and sounds of a roadaccident.

Following the demonstration, pupils were given the opportunityto quiz the experts, as well as watch a power point presentation, thathighlighted to them the dangers of motoring at such as young age.

It was clear that the pupils we given food for thought, during theafternoon and it is hoped that they will have taken serious heed tothe warnings issued by the experts during this worthwhile event.

MALLON CUP PRESENTED TO ABBEY C.B.S.Hurling

Just when the boys were worried thatrugby might have to take a back seat thisseason, Newry Rugby Football Club, inconjunction with Peace III, invited us tojoin in a cross community project. Thisinvolved six professional training sessions, led by Jonny Graham, former Ulster andIreland representative. Also included weretwo Respect and Prejudice AwarenessSessions, involving all pupils from fourlocal schools and led by the Peace InitiativeTeam. The climax of the project was theblitz competition held at Telford Park, homeof Newry Rugby Club. Played under a crisp

blue winter sky, the Genoa chips andsausage lunch helped warm the boys’ handsand stomachs!

The afternoon of rugby involved twoAbbey teams, A and A1. Both Abbey teamswon their first three games beating StPaul’s, Bessbrook, Kilkeel High School andNewry High School. They then played eachother. The ‘A’ team took a two-try-lead butto their surprise, the A1 team fought hardand scored two tries of their own in quicksuccession. The final minutes saw somesolid defending from the A1 team buteventually the strength of the A team came

through with a closing try to win 3-2. Thisday was not so much about winning but thedevelopment of rugby skills and crosscommunity involvement.

Many thanks to Newry Rugby FootballClub for their initiative, support, genuinewelcome and hospitality. If any of theAbbey boys want to play more rugby, thatwelcome is always extended to you at theclub. Training is on Wednesday eveningsand matches or training on Saturdays, alternatively speak to Mr Wadsworth or oneof the boys who play at club for moreinformation.

Aaron Beattie (7th year) beingpresented with his Danske Bank UlsterColleges All Star award by Chairman of theUlster Colleges, Seamus Meehan, andDanske Bank representative, Danny Stinton.

Congratulations to Year 14 student,Aaron Beattie, who plays at corner back forour MacRory Cup team, and who waspresented with a Danske Bank UlsterColleges All Star at a special awardsceremony that was held at the MerchantHotel in Belfast on Monday 17th December2012. Aaron follows in the footsteps of hisclub mate, at Naomh Eoin Bosco, EthanToner, who was awarded an All star in thesame position in 2010.

Twice in the space of four weeks, AbbeyCBS had one in foot in a colleges’ final onlyto miss out in the cruellest of fashion tothe same opponent, Omagh CBS.

The Rannafast Cup semi final was playedon the 9th of November in a rain-soakedAbbey Park, Armagh. The competition wasbeing played for the first time under itsnew name, the Edmund Rice Rannafast Cup,and was guaranteed to have a ChristianBrothers’ school contest the final whenAbbey were paired with Omagh CBS.

The Abbey started their campaign with aone-point victory over Carrickmacross. Itwas a game that the Abbey dominatedthroughout but slack defending allowedCarrickmacross to stay in touch by scoringthree second half goals. Vice captain,Sheagh Dobbin, ensured that the Newryboys overcame the scare when he landed anexcellent point with one minute of thegame left to ensure victory.

The next game was a comfortable victoryover St.Pius X, Magherafelt, and otherresults in the group meant that that victorywas enough to ensure qualification for thequarter final. The final group game againstSt Pat’s, Cavan, gave the Abbey managementpair of Seán Gallagher and John Rath, anopportunity to look at other squadmembers. The game ended in a twelvepoint defeat for the Abbey but both teamshad already qualified for the knock outstages.

The quarter final paired Abbey withtheir traditional rivals, St.Pat’s, Maghera. The game was played on the 6th Novemberand proved to be a highly competitive affair

with the Abbey needing a late goal fromtop-scorer, Ryan Trainor, to kill off theMaghera challenge. The semi final againstOmagh had to be played three days later, due to the scheduling of the final thefollowing week, and thus the Abbey boyshad just two days to prepare for the game. What a game it turned out to be!

The game was evenly poised with RyanTreanor, Killian Mc Evoy and Niall Raffertyall making large contributions to the Abbeycause. Luke Byrne, making his return frominjury, was excellent throughout in theAbbey defence as was Kileavey man, CathirMcKinney. The teams were level shortlyafter the break, and the game seemed tohave swung in favour of the Newry boyswhen Omagh were reduced to 14 men, tenminutes into the second half.

Conor Mc Coy and Ryan Trainor bothkicked scores towards the end of the secondhalf and the Abbey seemed to be home anddry, until disaster struck. An excellentflowing move, the length of the field foundan Omagh forward, one on one with Abbeygoalkeeper, Aaron Campbell, and hedispatched the ball to the Abbey net to giveOmagh a one point lead.

The Abbey battled gamely to find areply but it wasn’t to be. Omagh took theirplace in the Rannafast Final, a game theylost to Cavan, in similar circumstances totheir semi final win over the Abbey.

Remarkably history repeated itself a fewweeks later when the Corn na nÓg squadsuffered the same fate as their Rannafastcounterparts. Having reached the quarter-final by way of a play- off, the Abbey found

themselves paired with Armagh, one of thepre-tournament favourites. That gamewould prove to be one of the sportinghighlights of 2012 in the Abbey. Played asa home fixture at the Abbey, the Corn nanÓg boys turned in a performance that willlong be remembered for it’s commitment, work ethic and determination. MichaelCromie, Jason Sloan and Blain Mc Grathshone for the Abbey boys but in truth thiswas an excellent team performance. Ofparticular note was the Abbey’s blockingand tackling, and the smiles on the faces ofthe coaches Dan Gordon and Paul McParland, told the tale of how impressivethis victory was. That set up a semi finalagainst Omagh, who had previously beatenthe Abbey by twelve points in the groupstages. Again the Abbey produced anexcellent performance, and theirdetermination, and work rate put them in awinning position going in to the lastminute of the game. A mistake in themiddle of the Abbey defence gifted Omaghan equalising point and when the resultingkick-out was returned over the bar by anOmagh midfielder, the thirty-secondturnaround was complete. It was acrushing defeat for a team that had lookedto have booked an unlikely place in theCorn na nÓg final.

Both squads now face the challenge ofbuilding on their excellent progress andwhen they consider how close they came toglory, it shouldn’t be too hard to keep upthe hard work.

ALL STAR

Indeed the entire St Paul’s management teamhave strong links to the Abbey. Manager, JohnRafferty, is a former Head of PE, and was in chargeof several Abbey MacRory cup campaigns. He isassisted by three past pupils who each wore thefamous red, black and amber, with distinction, inthe Mac Rory Cup: Martin O Rourke, Barry Shannonand Martin Rafferty. As if that weren’t enough, former pupil, Connaire Makin, played for the Abbeyagainst St Paul’s in the Rannafast Cup semi finaltwo years ago, now lines out at wing half forwardfor Bessbrook.

All of these friendships and ties will be putaside in February, when the two sides compete fora place in the semi final.

Abbey manager, Jody Gormley, gave hisreaction to the draw:

“Their MacLarnon and All-Ireland wins really

boosted them and they have been the form teamof the league. We couldn’t have got a harder draw. But you don’t get easy draws in the MacRory. Ithink that it will create huge interest in the Newryand south Armagh area.”

“St Paul’s win over Maghera in the MacCormackCup means that they are the only team to havebeaten this Maghera group through their schoolcareers and that makes them a real test foranyone.”

St Paul’s Bessbrook coach, John Rafferty, whono doubt is relishing this tie, said at the presslaunch:

“This time last year we were waiting on theMacLarnon draw and very few were taking anynotice of us at all. A year has made a hugedifference to how others perceive us, and I supposehow we perceive ourselves.”

“However, the way I was looking at it was thatwhoever we drew would be a huge game for us. Asfar as I am concerned, the competition starts here.No-one wins the MacRory on what they do beforeChristmas.”

But he had to acknowledge that St Paul’sperformance in the pre-Christmas leaguecompetition had made an impact.

“We have been playing very well and we willneed to keep turning out big performances. Wewant to win this competition naturally and a drawlike this will create a huge interest in our area withboys from the same club teams now in oppositionin such a big competition as this.”

“We played them in a Rannafast Cup semi-finala couple of years ago, the equivalent year groupsand they beat us by a couple of points. So we knowthey are useful.”

All members of the Abbey Community, pupilspast and present, parents, staff and friends areencouraged to come out and support the team andcontribute to, what is sure to be, an electricatmosphere at this quarter final.
