Repeats Saturday, June 30, at 4 am

Also airs on Fusion on Saturday, June 30, at 9 pm

Led by music director Carl St.Clair, Pacific Symphony pays tribute to America’s history with a performance of composer Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island: The Dream of America.” This Grammy-nominated contemporary classical work celebrates the historic American immigrant experience.

Using texts from the Ellis Island Oral History Project and historic Ellis Island images in combination with an original orchestral score, “Ellis Island” features seven firsthand stories of immigrants dramatically interpreted by guest stars Barry Bostwick, Camryn Manheim, Michael Nouri and more. Over 40 percent of United States citizens can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island, and immigration remains at the forefront of global news. This concert captures the emotions, elation and uncertainties of America’s epic immigrant experience.

The special was recorded by GREAT PERFORMANCES at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in 2017 during Pacific Symphony’s 17th American Composers Festival. Peter Boyer’s “Ellis Island: The Dream of America” premiered in 2002 to great acclaim. It has since received nearly 200 performances by more than 80 orchestras, and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 2005.

Fleetwood Mac: The DanceSaturday, June 2, at 9:30 pm

Repeats Tuesday, June 5, at 9:30 pm and Friday, June 8, at 11:30 pm

In 1997, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie and Stevie Nicks came together for their first full-length concert performance since 1982. The concert features material from the group’s CD “The Dance,” as well as new arrangements of classic hits from multi-platinum albums.

The special takes a quieter turn when the group performs acoustic renditions of “Big Love” and “Landslide,” a Nicks song that found recent popularity with alternative rockers The Smashing Pumpkins. Christine McVie offers a then-new song, “Temporary One,” as does Lindsey Buckingham with “Bleed to Love Her.”

The grand finale features a spectacular performance of “Tusk” featuring the 85-piece University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band.

Hitler’s EnglandMonday, June 18, at 10 pm Repeats Tuesday, June 19, at 4 am & Sunday, June 24, at 7 pm

Also airs on Fusion on Wedneday, June 20, at 9 pm

HITLER’S ENGLAND tells the compelling story of the people who lived in the British Channel Islands under German occupation from 1940 to 1945. Hosted by historian and acclaimed actor John Nettles, this unique historical documentary details a little-known chapter of World War II.

Nettles spent more than a decade on the British Channel Islands, not only as an actor but also as a scholar. Sharing his years of research and conducting interviews with locals, he unearths tales from this turbulent period in time. There were stories of collaboration and resistance, heroism and infamy, denunciation and deportation. There was also the everyday life between the conquerors and the conquered.

Nettles highlights the stories of ordinary people, many of whom became extraordinary as they lived through the harsh and bitter years of the German occupation.

Jewish American Soldiers: Stories from WWIIAirs on Fusion on Wednesday, June 20, at 8 pm and Saturday, June 30, at noon

Also airs on Western Reserve PBS on Monday, June 25, at midnight

World War II transformed American Jews in many ways. The veterans were fighting a battle on three fronts: against the American enemies, against fascism and the Nazis, and a personal battle against anti-Semitism.

Some of these veterans were not used to being in the South, where many of the training camps were located. In some of these small towns there were signs that said, “Jews not welcome.” An example is shared by German-born Irving Bienstock, who described one experience that happened in basic training. His account begins with his commanding officer doing bunk checks and “[H]e looks into my foot locker and he sees my tefillin in there. He asked me, ‘Is that GI issued?’ So I said, ‘No sir.’ He said get rid of it, you’ve got 48 hours to get rid of it.”

These men fought on enemy lines for their families, who were persecuted by the Nazis, and for their country.

A City at War: ChicagoAirs on Fusion on Wednesday, June 20, at 10 pm

A CITY AT WAR: CHICAGO chronicles what happened in America’s major cities during World War II. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) called on the country to become “an arsenal of Democracy” to defeat Axis powers Germany, Japan, and Italy, cities like Chicago, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, and others transformed themselves into major producers of war material. Almost overnight, America’s industrial might was unleashed on its enemies, with each city making unique contributions.
