Historically, there are two types of pat riots in the United States.

* * * * * * * * * *

The f irst t ype of pat riot turns to a leader, who he or she believes has been endorsed by God. These pat riots demand of this leader a return to nat ional greatness. In turn, the leader demands the pat riot to worship nat ional power. This power has no limit s and is used over other cit izens.

Devoted to nat ional symbols and icons, these pat riots display the f lag on their lapel pins, t ies, shirt s, shorts, and caps. They proudly recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sway to the steady, unpretent ious music and lyrics of "America the Beaut if ul."

This t ype of pat riot subst itutes f lag waving -- somet imes even a f lag of t reason -- f or reason. These pat riots reject the not ion that the right to hold ideas that are dif f erent goes hand-in-hand w ith pat riot ism, insist ing on blind

loyalt y to their vision of America and interpretat ion of the Const itut ion.

They f ind glory in puf f ing up the nat ion, including it s history, and shout ing down anyone they think is pull ing the count ry down. Thus, they believe kneeling during the Nat ional Anthem as a means of protest is ant i-pat riot ic, even ant i-American.

In 1828, Noah Webster best def ined this pat riot : the t rue pat riot "is a person who loves his count ry, and zealously supports and def ends it ."

* * * * * * * * * *

The second type of pat riot displays his or her pat riot ism by demonst rat ing not only his or her love of count ry, but his or her love of the best ideals of the nat ion, which are f reedom, opportunit y, equalit y, and just ice. This t ype of pat riot is not af raid to say when the count ry has f ai led to l ive up to these ideals.

They are uncomf ortable w ith the concept of "pat riot ism" because of i t s associat ion w ith the f lag waving and pin wearing nat ionalist ic pat riots. As a result , they of ten reject the icons and songs of the nat ion.

They believe w rapping oneself in a f lag and blindly f ollow ing a leader is not t rue pat riot ism. Rather, t rue pat riot ism requires one to advance the rights of his or f ellow cit izens and hold the leaders accountable to the Const itut ion and it s evolving interpretat ion.

They reject a common historical, insist ing a common view f ai ls to accommodate the nat ion's diversit y and history of intolerance. Thus, they think protest ing social injust ice somet imes requires such pat riot ic acts as kneeling during the Nat ional Anthem.

In 1903, John Havermayor best def ined this t ype of pat riot : the t rue pat riot "interprets ' love of count ry' to signif y love f or the people who are in i t ."

* * * * * * * * * *

I ronically, the f irst t ype proudly recites the Pledge of Allegiance or sings "America the Beaut if ul," which were composed by the second type, and the second type rejects these words and lyrics because they associate them w ith the nat ionalism of the f irst t ype.

Historically, there are two types of pat riots in the United States.

SWAMPLANDIA! QUOTE?The beginning of the end can feel a lot like the middle when you are living in it.?

Karen Russell, Author of Swamplandia!

" U R MY MILF! Send me a naked pic!! Divorced mother Eve Fletcher has never, ever, received a text like this before. Could it be from one of her son Brendan?s fr iends? What exactly is a MILF anyway? A quick Google search catapults Eve into a seemingly endless wor ld of porn; a week later, she?s watched more Milfateria than she?d care to admit. Eve?s porn discovery prompts her to push the boundar ies in real life with both cr inge-worthy and exhilarating consequences."

Breakfast cereal, an American invent ion, began in 1863. The f irst , Granula, a concentrated grain cake, which had to be soaked overnight , was invented by James Caleb Jackson, a vegetarian who managed a wellness ret reat in Danville, New York.

In 1895, C.W. Post int roduced Postum, a "cereal beverage intended to replace coffee in the morning."

John Harvey and Will Keith Kellogg produced the f irst commercial cereal f lake in 1896. Init ially called Granose Flakes, the name changed to Corn Flakes.
