Highest Honor at VEX Tournament What can keep students occupied for a weekend? VEX Robotics! Team 829A
consisting of Mailika States, senior, and Ellie Honious, junior, driver/controller and
student coaches Gabriel Shelton, freshman, and Nick Pinco, senior, won the top award
at the Indianapolis VEX City Championships at Banker's Life on January 19-20,
2013. The Excellence Award was the highest honor of the championships and was
presented by VEX Robotics and Mayor Ballard. This award is presented to a team
who is not only great competitors, but one who goes out of their way to help others.
This team also qualified to compete in the World Championships in April in
Anaheim, California.
Walker Career Center also had three additional teams compete in the
tournament. 8290A representing Warren Central High School, 829B and 829C
representing Walker Career Center.
All Warren/Walker Robotics team members were instrumental in the success
of the first City of Indianapolis VEX Robotics Championship. In addition to
competing in the tournament, team members served as referees, field reset, field
control, DJ, and provided technical support to the rookie teams throughout the
tournament. It was gracious professionalism at its best!
Congratulations to Randy Decker, Jason Daniels, students, mentors and
parents. Together they made it a great experience for all involved.
SkillsUSA Regional Competition Results
For two weekends in February, students from Walker Career Center competed in SkillsUSA regional contests. SkillsUSA is a student organization for those students enrolled in Career and Technical Education classes and promotes skill and leadership development. The regional competitions were held at various sites around Indianapolis. Students at Walker Career Center displayed great skill and those placing in the top five for their competition will advance to the state competition held at Walker Career Center in April. Nanoline Nationals The Nanoline Contest allowed Walker engineering students to put their technical skills to test.
The team created a design using nanoNavigator software to build a working automation system. What
is Nanoline? It is an intelligent and compact controller that automates multiple basic tasks. Our
students built an automatic hot dog cooker. It was fully automated using VEX and Phoenix
components. After winning the regional contest, the students were transported to Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania via Charter bus, all expenses paid, to compete in the national contest. The Walker Nano
Team placed 2nd out of 22 teams who competed! The contest was sponsored by Phoenix Contact who
is a leading developer of industrial electronic technology and STEM initiatives. Congratulations to
Warren Central/Walker Career Center Engineering students: Alex Rogers, Astrid Hunt, LaShawn Lee,
Michael Linares, Carlos Trujillo, Jordan Britain and their teachers, Jim Hanson and Tim Tarplee.

CareerFest 2013 On February 7th, Warren Central High School and Walker Career Center packed the house with representatives
from the high school departments, employers, apprenticeships, military branches and postsecondary schools. The
evening is an annual event and is full of information and fun for all who attend. Below is a peek at this year’s
event.

Women in Engineering Walker Career Center hosted 60 eighth grade girls from Stonybrook, Creston and Raymond
Park who were identified with a talent for Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Math (STEM). The
girls were invited to a breakfast at the Threshold Restaurant and catered by the Culinary Arts students
and sponsored by Rolls Royce. Students were divided into groups and joined by a female engineer who
shared with them what life was like as an engineer. Women engineers from Rolls Royce and RW
Armstrong answered questions from the students and shared information about the world of engineering
during breakfast. The morning was informational for both the students and the engineers.
Students were then invited to join the Walker Career Center Project Lead the Way (PLTW)
teachers and other PLTW students in a week long Gateway to Engineering camp geared toward girls
during the first week of spring break. The week will be full of fun activities that promote the
development of engineering fundamentals.
