Proverbs 16:3 “Commit your
work to the Lord, and your plans
will be established.”
What an exciting six months
we have had at Trinity! I have
moved from Georgia into the for-
eign land of Las Vegas, my family
and I have been received with
love and grace, and we are off to
an amazing new beginning.
God has done some amazing
things in our midst in the past
few months, but I know in my
heart that this is only the start of
what God is doing. As we look
forward to the many gifts that
God has in store for us this year,
I am reminded in the scriptures
of Proverbs of God’s desire for
our commitment.
We know very well that God
is faithful to our needs; however
just as God is faithful, we are
called as God’s people to commit
our work to the Lord. As we pre-
pare for 2015, Trinity has been
asked to recommit to our church
through our prayers, presence,
gifts, service, and witness.
You have been asked to re-
turn pledge cards which outline
your financial commitment to our
faith community, but have you
thought about how you will com-
mit to God in all of the areas of
your life? Proverbs 16 reminds us
that although God is always pre-
sent and working in our favor, we
have a responsibility to commit
our work and lives to God.
The Proverb tells us in verse
6 that, “By loyalty and faithful-
ness iniquity is atoned for, and
by the fear of the Lord one
avoids evil.” This means that
through our commitment to God
in a faithful life, we work with
God’s Spirit toward personal per-
fection. Through commitment we
draw closer to God and our plans
for a bright future are fulfilled to
the glory of God.
During this time of the year,
many people make resolutions
that will soon be forgotten.
These promises to ourselves and
others, in most cases, only serve
to be a temporary change to our
lives

Las Vegas Korean UMC
On Sunday, Dec. 7, Trinity welcomed the Las
Vegas Korean United Methodist Church to share
facilities on campus. Eun Jin La is the pastor and
his wife is Sang La.
The Korean congregation is the second UM
family to share their ministry on the Trinity campus
in recent years. Previously, the Filipino Methodist
fellowship also used the Trinity buildings before
relocating to another Desert Southwest Conference
church in Las Vegas.
Pastor La’s office is located in the west side of
the Education building, next to the TUMC Youth
room. Please be sure to make them feel at home
and most welcome.
Their Sunday schedule is as follows:
12:00 p.m. Choir Rehearsal, Library
1 p.m. Sunday Church School, Room #9
1 p.m. Korean Worship, Sanctuary
2 p.m. Luncheon, Café Trinity
6 p.m. Korean Worship, Sanctuary
7 p.m. Dinner, Café Trinity
Newsletter returns from hiatus
Surprise! We’re back. The Word staff is happy to announce the church monthly publication has returned
circulation after a five-month absence. We plan on resume publishing using the same monthly format that
we’re enjoyed for the past 14 years.
Our new pastor, the Rev. Khalif Smith, has been at Trinity for the last seven months and we will continue
to offer him support in his direction that he will be taking the church toward. This will be your opportunity to
help publicize the activities of the church with your contributions.
34th annual Living Nativity Inspiring
Thirty-four years of tradi-
tion continued on Wednesday,
Dec. 17 with the annual Living
Nativity, directed by Gillian Ka-
bat. It was performed twice in
the Sanctuary. Most of the par-
ticipants were repeat performers,
or children of parents who had
performed when they were chil-
dren.
It was a very inspiring pres-
entation, and heartfelt thanks go
out to a dedicated Gillian who
has directed the Living Nativity
pageant of the Christ birth all of
its 34 years at Trinity.
Changes in the Sanctuary
Please excuse the dust and
clutter in the back of the Sanctu-
ary. The church staff and volun-
teers are in the process of build-
ing a new sound booth to im-
prove the Sunday worship experi-
ence.
It will take time to get every-
thing just right but expect to see
the improvements in the near
future.
Get Your Ash in Church
On Ash Wednesday, Feb.
18, Trinity Church will be open
from 7 to 9 a.m. for those who
would like to come for a time of
reflection and ashes. There will
be signs announcing this and
inviting the public. It will be open
to everyone.
This is also the beginning of
Wonderful Wednesdays, which
will start with dinner at 5:30
p.m., an Ash Wednesday worship
service at 6:30, and a Lenten Bi-
ble study from 7 to 8 p.m. Won-
derful Wednesdays will continue
for six weeks. Watch your Sunday
bulletins for further information
on Wonderful Wednesdays.

Commitment
which demonstrate our desire
to become better people. Prov-
erbs 16 reveals to us, that if
our work is not committed to
God, then we are working in
vain.
This year I encourage the
people of Trinity United Meth-
odist Church to make a commit-
ment that will endure; a com-
mitment to God through the
work of our church! A commit-
ment to our vision of being a
transforming community of
Christ’s love for Las Vegas,
through our prayers, presence,
gifts, service, and witness; and
a commitment to our mission
of making disciples of Jesus
Christ for the transformation of
Las Vegas and the World!
Surely, if we commit our work
to the Lord, our plans will be
established!
May God bless our contin-
ued commitment,
Khalif A. Smith Sr.

In Appreciation
A big THANK YOU to
everyone who contributed
toys for the District Side-
walk Ministry. Due to your
contributions, Trinity was
able to send gifts for 15
young children of Las Vegas
who may not have received
anything else for Christmas.
Thank you to Janet
Odormatt for donating
about 70 new teddy bears
for the client families of the
Society of St. Stephen. She
made hats, scarves and mit-
tens for most of the bears.
The church office was inun-
dated by so many of the
stuffed animals. With all the
generosity, many other de-
serving families were able
to enjoy a wonderful Christ-
mas. Christ’s love was felt
by many.
U.S. Marine Corps Invades Campus
On Wednesday afternoon,
Dec. 24, the campus was in-
vaded by 70 U.S. Marines. Less
than 24 hours before, Sgt.
Johansen Bobbitt of the U.S. Ma-
rines’ Recruiting Station in
North Las Vegas inquired
whether Trinity would be inter-
ested in serving hot meals pre-
pared by military personnel in
Café Trinity to people who
might not have a hot meal for
Christmas.
With little time to prepare,
church staff started making
phone calls, sending out e-
mails, and making signage to
display by the sidewalk facing
West Charleston Boulevard.
Food was prepared and served
and God’s work was fulfilled.
Not only did homeless people
participate, but other less fortu-
nate families came – men,
women and children.
While some of the Marines
worked in the Café, others did
needed work in the Society of St.
Stephen trailer, Potter’s Place,
cleaned up the campus and
playgrounds and operated the
sweeper in the Sunday school
class rooms and the Sanctuary.
Pastor Khalif Smith jumped
in his car and drove around
where he knew other homeless
people would be and invited
them to come and break bread.
Several of the diners stayed for
the 3:00 o’clock Christmas Eve
candlelight service, and two
have since become members
here at Trinity.
Sgt. Bobbitt said the follow-
ing played a key role in food
delivery this past Christmas, in-
cluding GySgt. Paul Ramirez,
GySgt. Victor Majuno, SSgt. Ja-
son Cabrera, SSgt. Jason Poston,
Sgt. Daniel Wyatt, SSgt. Tony
Espinoza, and Alexandra Reyes.
Our thanks to Sgt. Bobbitt
and the Marine Corps for their
outreach at the holidays.
Emery Ava Reyes Garcia baptism.
Coralee Kimenker baptism, and par-
ents Jeff and Heather new members.

The Trinity United Methodist Church family mourns the loss of long-
time member Helen Becknall Brooks who went to be with the Lord on Jan.
24. The beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and a Christian friend to
many was born June 12, 1934, to John and Mary (nee Hall) Becknall.
Viewing was scheduled on Sunday, Feb. 1 at Palm Mortuary and Memo-
rial. Services were planned on Monday, Feb. 2 at Trinity UMC at 1 p.m. with
reception following service in Room ABC. Donations can be made to the
church’s United Methodist Women’s Fellowship or Gideons International,
4021 Mark Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89108.
Raised in a farming community, 18 miles southwest of Bismarck, N.D.,
she attended Bismarck High School and, in 1955, was graduated from the
Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing with an RN degree. Helen married Paul
L. Brooks on Sept. 6, 1955 and, for the last 45 years, they have lived in Las
Vegas and attended Trinity UMC. Helen was employed by the Clark County
Health Department and University Medical Center.
At an early age, relatives nicknamed her “Tippy” which stuck through-
out her lifetime. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary
Becknall; baby sister Roletta; and sister, Janice Larson. Helen is survived by
her husband of 59 years, Paul L. Brooks; sons, Kevin (Maria) and Michael;
daughter, Kristin Rivero; granddaughter, Sarah Brooks; and grandson, Matt
Brooks. She also leaves behind her siblings; brother, Harley (Bea) Becknall;
sisters Karen (Norman) Olson; JoAnne Marcks and La Rayne Scott; five
nieces; four nephews; and numerous cousins.

Community Outreach Ministry Flourishes
By Mary Lovelady
Trinity’s exciting community
outreach ministry, the Society of
St. Stephen, has been busier
than ever in recent months. The
Food Pantry and Clothing Bou-
tique continue to be open on
Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
With the assistance of Rev.
Khalif Smith and other church
staff, the Helping Hand Up
program now not only pro-
vides all clients with lists
of area resources and occa-
sionally pays a bill to pre-
vent homelessness, but
also selected clients are
counseled and assisted in
making better choices and
improving housing. The
Thursday Food Rescue pro-
gram is flourishing.
In the past nine
months, volunteers distrib-
uted 98,683 pounds of
perishable food to
“shoppers” from nearby
neighborhoods. The suc-
cess of the St. Stephen pro-
grams is made possible by a
crew of approximately 60 loyal
volunteers, most of whom are
members of Trinity United Meth-
odist Church.
In November, St. Stephen
members hosted an annual golf
tournament enjoyed by 80 golf-
ers. Raising approximately 58
percent of the ministry’s annual
budget, the tournament was
sponsored by 52 local busi-
nesses and 20 individuals.
Year round, other important
partnerships exist. Members of
the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints have been as-
sisting with the distribution of
food on Thursdays;
in fact, the LDS
church has listed
Society of St.
Stephen volun-
teerism opportu-
nities on their
recently posted
Justserve.org
web site.
Cadets from
the Centennial
High School
NJROTC continue
to assist when
available. Over the holidays, the
high school students twice
brought loads of food gathered
through a food drive at the
school. This effort is made pos-
sible by Centennial High instruc-
tor Gail Johnson, a longtime
member of Trinity.
In addition, the Assistance
League of Las Vegas provides
teddy bears for children who
visit the Pantry, and several
small businesses regularly con-
tribute food or toiletries. This
past Christmas, Trinity member
Janet Odermatt brought smiles
to the faces of visiting children
by donating 75 teddy bears
dressed in winter attire made by
Janet.
Currently, renovation of the
Potter’s Place building is under-
way to facilitate the move of the
entire ministry into one location.
The Trinity Trustees, with re-
modeling labor donated by
Robert Potter’s Affordable Con-
cepts and flooring contributed
by Bryan Price’s Flooring Solu-
tions of Nevada, organized the
project.
The Society of St. Stephen
programs are coordinated by a
dedicated ministry team. Co-
chairing the team for 2015 are
Paul Brooks, Patti Haber and
Mary Lovelady. Other coordina-

Hope Preschool May Open at TUMC
PAGE 9 VOLUME 15, I SSUE 1
The Trinity Trustees is negoti-
ating with H.O.P.E. Preschool to
lease classroom space to open a
preschool program at the
church operating under the
name, H.O.P.E Preschool at Trin-
ity UMC.
The Las Vegas business, for-
merly named Helping Hands
Children, has been in operation
since August 2012. It is owned
and managed by Jillian White,
who recently joined the Trinity
congregation. The proposed
preschool program would be
available to children 3-5 years of
age and begin sometime in the
spring with an enrollment of 36
children. Currently, both Trinity
and Hope school are in the li-
censing stage with the city and
state.
Jillian, who has been in the
childcare profession for over 20
years, said in a prepared state-
ment, “I have always been an
active member of my commu-
nity and passionate about mak-
ing a difference in the lives of
others, especially children. The
vision I have for the children in
the community surrounding
Trinity United Methodist Church
is to offer H.O.P.E.”
The acronym H.O.P.E. says
Jillian is defined as H for honest,
O for open, P for patience and E
for education.
Trinity was one of the first
churches in Las Vegas to oper-
ate a day care program. It
evolved eventually into a Chris-
tian preschool that flourished
into an award-winning recog-
nized program until it was
closed due to the slow-down of
the economy.
Once plans are finalized and
approved for a two year lease,
Hope would operate with its
own teaching and administrative
staff and would lease classroom,
resource room, and office space
with accessibility to facilities
such as playground, indoor,
storage, and computer lab.
The Hope preschool program
would operate Monday to Friday
from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. serving
children ages 3-5 years old from
low income, food insecure
households and disadvantaged
families. Students will be nur-
tured daily and shown the agape
love of Christ through all staff
members, family and volun-
teers.
Hope’s core curriculum
teaches letter recognition, num-
ber recognition, colors, shapes,
counting, name recognition,
writing, math, science, manners,
and listening skills. Students will
have an opportunity to partici-
pate in special subjects such as
art, computers, music, dance
and chapel.

Partnering with CSN
Partnering with CSN
Trinity Church is proud to
announce its new partnership
with the College of Southern Ne-
vada. CSN will be conducting free
English as a Second Language
classes on the church campus.
Classes will be he held three
times a week on Mondays, Tues-
days and Wednesdays from 9 to
11:30 a.m. Classes begin on
Tuesday, Feb. 17 in the Educa-
tion building in Room A. The
classes are for seven weeks, with
no classes being held March 30,
31 and April 1 due to Holy Week.
Classes will end on April 7.
Please pass this information on
to those who would benefit from
these classes.
Since class size is limited,
those interested must pre-
register:
Enroll online at:
www.csn.edu/workforce;
Visit the CSN Sahara West
Center campus located at 2409
Las Verdes St., Las Vegas, NV,
89102; or
See Trinity staffer Jo Ann
Magner in the church office if
you have questions.
If things go well with this
offering, then CSN is willing to
continue classes on the Trinity
campus and offer High School
Equivalency classes as well as
additional ESL classes. Please
note participants do not have to
provide a photo ID to attend this
class.
In December, the church was
gifted with many boxes of por-
celain rosebud lights in various
colors. Trinity’s Youth
group has been desig-
nated to sell these lights
as a fundraiser for $10
each of which $5 will go
toward their planned
summer activities and $5
will go to the church’s
general fund.
If interested in purchas-
ing these quaint lights
which come in red, pink,
coral and yellow, the
Youth will be selling
them in Café Trinity be-
tween Sunday services
while supplies last.
Don’t miss out on this
opportunity to purchase
these beautiful objects
ideal for home use or as
gifts. This would be an
ideal time to help sup-

Your Mission Team at Work
A big ole’ thank you to folks
at Trinity for supporting our Mis-
sion efforts for University, Zion
and Holbrook United Methodist
Church sidewalk Sunday schools
at Christmas.
Trinity’s Director of Christian
Education Jo Ann Magner was
able to fill 20 bags of toys and
various items, etc., for these chil-
dren from your generous dona-
tions! God Bless you all for your
help!
Our 2015 BIG Mission project
will be to support an orphaned
child from the International Chil-
dren’s Network Matsiko Choir of
Peru – from elementary through
hopefully the college years. A BIG
commitment! Trinity will be sup-
porting the needs of youth Axel
Gomez Insa according to June
Deley of the Missions team.
Please keep checking the
church’s Mission’s Bulletin Board
in the court yard for more infor-
mation. A photograph and de-
scription of our special child will
be posted as soon as it is re-
ceived from the organization. We
are so excited about this project
– it is almost like being first time
parents.
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
PROJECT – Please save your alu-
minum can pull tabs from any
and all cans (soft drinks, beer
cans, you name it!) and place
them into the Ronald McDonald
house in the narthex. A great,
worthwhile, and simple mission
project, this is an outreach we
can all participate in! The Las
Vegas organization is a refuge
for parents and family, a place
greatly appreciated when a par-
ents’ child or children are in the
hospital with usually a life-
threatening illness. Thanks for
your support.
In addition, please support
the church’s Ash Wednesday
Fundraiser Pancake Supper on
Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 5:30
to 7 p.m. Mike Petty’s usual deli-
cious pancakes (all you can eat),
maple sausages, delicious fruit
cup, coffee, tea, and blessed fel-
lowship will be offered to all.
Thank you again Trinity for
your wonderful support of your
Mission team.

New Kitchen Coordinator
After many years of faithful
service, Martha Trollier resigned
her position as Kitchen Coordi-
nator this past June. We want to
thank Martha for her dedication
to this position. After being
blessed by several part-time vol-
unteers, Trinity once again has a
full-time Kitchen Coordinator,
Nikki Smith.
Expect to see some of the
changes already implemented
by Nikki. Some ask “Why all the
changes?” Well, Nikki has had
to make space in the kitchen for
the Las Vegas Korean United
Methodist Church to store their
kitchen supplies.
This has necessitated mak-
ing changes. It will take a little
time to locate where everything
is now, but it will take patience
and be a learning experience for
users. It is requested for every-
one to respect the space set
aside for the Korean congrega-
tion and the refrigerator they
will be placing in the kitchen.
Thank you.

Thank You Dear Trinity,
Thank you so much for the
Home Touch and the Bulletin.
Great to read a bit about what is
going on. I liked reading the Bul-
letin and could hear all of you
singing “Surely the Presence” in
my inner ear.
Love,
Jeanne & Larry Walker
