Please take some time to ponder the lyrics of Hymn of Promise as we press on in our Lenten Journey following Jesus in the WAY OF THE CROSS. We are easily distracted along the way and often confounded by the little deaths that we encounter in the world around us. Holy Communion will be served April 2, 2017

The Session met on March 20, 2017.

Approved a request to the Presbytery of New Harmony for $2,000 in financial support for March.

Elder Evans is trying to get enough folks to volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity build on April 4 from 8am-2pm. If we don’t get enough volunteers, we will try to reschedule at a later date.

It seems early to even imagine, but plans are underway for Vacation Bible School August 7-10. As a congregation, please encourage your friends and neighbors to participate.

April’s First Wednesday Fellowship Meal April, 5 at 5:30pm, will be a howling good time with guest speaker Rick Kaplan and his Canine Angels. He trains service dogs to assist veterans and last year, he trained black lab named Koda who assists one of our preschool student with Autism. Come out and enjoy a “Southern Cooking” themed meal and share some pets with the pups.

The Property Committee is working on repairing the water fountain. They have plans for the required enclosure of our garbage dumpster in the works.

The first small group meeting that is part of our Strategic Planning process was very productive. The Session and Pastor Tom are

working very hard to place emphasis on this planning process. Thanks to all who filled out surveys and are participating in small groups!

Preschool registration for 2017-2018 took place and all the morning slots are filled. There are still openings in the afternoon sessions.

Pastor Becky and the Tool Time class have been busy studying world religions. They went on a “field trip” to a lecture at CCU and attended a Muslim open house. Along the way, they are learning about the similarities of the story of God in different religions.

Everyone is encouraged to fill out an Emergency Information Form and have it on file with the church. During the March First Wednesday program, Pastor Becky shared information about being prepared for health emergencies. In a time of crisis, your church family will be there for you and wants to know your wishes. The form is available on the website or in the church office.

Pastor Tom will attend a service honoring his father for 12 years of ministry at First Presbyterian Church, Maxton, NC, on May 7.

A list of members who have not attended in the past year was distributed to the Session for their input. A letter is being sent to inactive members asking if they wish to remain on the roles of the

church. Each year Celebration must pay our PCUSA Denomination membership per capita of $15 for each person on our membership roles. In no way do we want to lose members, but if they have moved, or are attending another church we want to clear them from our role so we have an accurate count of our flock.

Elders Butler and Bowie have taken over the responsibility of coordinating bereavement meals. Please sign up to support your brothers and sisters in Christ in their time of grief or special need.

Plans are under way for a bowling event on Sunday afternoon, May 7, at 2pm at Waccamaw Lanes.

The Session joyfully approved the request of Sandy Wallace and Alan Perry to unite in marriage in our sanctuary in May.

We are delighted to welcome four new members: Tiffany Bowie, Michael Dunn, Pat Himes, and Lois Storms!

The Session is so grateful to the loving members of Celebration for the warmth and caring you show to our visitors and to one another. What a blessing it is to have a loving congregation.

Please participate in the Lenten Journey with your participation, study, and reflection. Blessings to all.

Breakfast for March took us to The Olympic Flame, one of our favorites. Judy Leonard was our hostess. Thanks, Judy, for making the arrangements. There were nine of us there and Pastor Tom was able to join us.

As always the food and service were very good. Jimmy, the owner, always comes over to greet us and gives a 10% discount. It was a chilly but beautiful day and as usual there was lots of conversation and laughter and fellowship.

Next month’s breakfast will be Friday, April 21, 9 AM, at Johnny D’s located at 3301 N. Kings Hwy in Myrtle Beach. Hope y’all can be there.

Our March lunch took us back to TBonz. We have dined there before and have enjoyed it very much. Once again, we had the back room practically to ourselves. There were 13 Ladybugs in attendance. We had a few last minute cancellations. We were espe-cially delighted to welcome our two newest Ladybugs, Beth Bruton and Bernadine Lamar. We were so happy they decided to join us and Bernadine even gave the blessing before we ate.

We collected $70.00 for charity. This will be added to the monies previously collected. Thank you, ladies, for your generosity. We had very nice wait-staff and great food which ranged from burgers to soup and salad. As always there was much laughter and camaraderie going on. The next lunch will be Thursday, April 6, at noon at The Boathouse which is located at 201 Fantasy Harbour Blvd. Beth Bruton will be our hostess. If you plan to attend, the sign-up sheet will be in the Narthex. Let me know if you need a ride. All Ladybugs, their friends and family (female of course) are invited…..hope to see you there.

The Strategic Ministry and Mission Planning process is going well. The steering committee is working to compile results from the congregational survey. We appreciate all the input that you have shared and look forward to sharing a summary of the results with you later this year. On April 8 and April 29, the small groups will be meeting to continue their work in the planning process under the leadership and guidance of the Rev. Charles Elliott. Thanks to all participants in the small groups for sharing your time and talents with us. Please pray for this planning process and for our church as we seek God’s vision for our future.

Our 2nd Habitat Build will be at Hope's Crossing on Tuesday, April 4, from 8am-2pm. Many of you have asked what task we will be doing: it could be metaling, door hanging, or prepping for painting. There is an experienced team that is at the site who will guide you and find a task so you can contribute to the home. Please bring water and your lunch to the work site.

The total income for the YTD January and February was $96,377 while total expenses were $97,925, for a deficit difference of $1,547. We had budgeted for a YTD deficit of $3,254, therefore, we did better than we had budgeted. With continued growth in the church and watching our expenditures, we are on our way to having a good year.

It is so hard to believe that we are in the last couple months of preschool for this school year. Time sure flies when you are having fun. We are all looking forward to a much needed break in the middle of the month. We will return on April 16, all geared up for the end of the school year. Don’t worry the year is far from over and we have many fun and exciting activities planned. We are all looking forward to this month in hopes that the warm weather will be more consistent and we can count on many warm and sunny days. Upon returning from break, we will be learning some nursery rhymes. Studies have shown that a child that has memorized eight nursery rhymes by the age of four years old are among the best readers by the time they are eight! We are still enrolling for summer camp and next school year. If you know anyone interested, please have them call the preschool office for more information. For all of you with children or grandchildren, Kindergarten registration for the 2017-2018 school year is the week of April 3. Contact your neighborhood school for the times they will have their registrations. I hope everyone has an enjoyable spring and Easter!

Name: Terry Pettijohn

Family: I met the love of my life in the 8th grade. Bernie and I have been married for 47 years, and we have three children. Terry and Shelley live in Myrtle Beach with their two children: Ana and Noah. Karen and Kenny also live in Myrtle Beach with their three children: Jillian, Gavin, and Kaden. Tommy and Erika live in Columbus, Ohio, with their son Colton and new baby Wyatt. We lived in Marion, Ohio, for over 40 years, and when both Terry and Karen moved to Myrtle Beach, we decided to retire and move here to be close to our five grandchildren living within 5 minutes of us (we still get back to Ohio as often as possible).

Church Background: I was born into the Presbyterian Church. My grandfather was a founder of the United Presbyterian Church in Ecorse, Michigan. This is where I grew up, was confirmed, and Bernie and I were married (she was Catholic prior to our marriage). When we went to graduate school, we joined First Presbyterian Church of Bowling Green, Ohio, where I served as Deacon. After graduate school we moved to Marion, Ohio, where we joined First Presbyterian Church of Marion. This is where we raised our three children, taught Sunday School, edited the church newsletter, hosted the website, and both served as Elder. In June 2015, we moved to Myrtle Beach, and the first church we attended was Celebration. Within 15 minutes we both knew this is where we wanted to be (so did not look at any other options). We joined in January 2016.

Career Background: I was born and raised in Michigan. I attended Alma College (Presbyterian school) and Michigan State University as an undergraduate. I was considering becoming a vet, but once I took my first psychology course, that is what I wanted to learn about. I earned a PhD in Experimental Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and then we moved to Marion, Ohio, where I taught psychology. Being a Professor of Psychology was the only thing I wanted to do as a career, and I really loved teaching. I even taught extra courses without pay! Students were involved in my research (animal motivation and behavior), which kept me motivated to continue to teach a wide variety of courses. I retired as Professor Emeritus of Psychology when we moved to Myrtle Beach.

Activities: Other than family, teaching, and church, I have always enjoyed music and photography. And now I have time to archive our vast collections of songs, photos, and family videos. Currently, Bernie and I have been exploring South Carolina. We love to have the opportunity to watch the grandkids grow up, and nothing makes us happier than playing and being with them. And Bernie has the goal of eating at every restaurant in Myrtle Beach area, so of course I have to help her out.

Committee Assignment as Elder: I am head of the Strategic Planning Committee, and along with the committee, have been working on the Ministry and Mission planning process (yes, the survey you completed in church a few weeks ago).

Favorite Thing About Celebration Church: When we first attended Celebration both Bernie and I were overwhelmed by the sense of caring and family. That has only increased, and we both feel blessed to be members of Celebration.

Elder Pettijohn reports information on the sacrament of communion from the Website of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Sacraments of the Presbyterian Church - Part 2, Communion

"The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) understands Baptism and the Lord’s Supper to be Sacraments, instituted by God and commended by Christ. Sacraments are signs of the real presence and power of Christ in the Church, symbols of God’s action. Through the Sacraments, God seals believers in redemption, renews their identity as the people of God, and marks them for service” (Book of Order, W-1.3033.2).

Communion or Lord's Supper. “The Lord’s Supper is the sign and seal of eating and drinking in communion with the crucified and risen Lord. During his earthly ministry Jesus shared meals with his followers as a sign of community and acceptance and as an occasion for his own ministry” (Book of Order, W-2.4001a).

"The Gospels report Jesus’ common eating and drinking with people from various walks of life, making such events worthy of remembrance. As far as it can be determined, Jewish meals always included bread. It was also customary for the host or head of the house to bless the bread and then break and share it with those at the table.

"On the day of his resurrection the risen Jesus made himself known to his followers in the breaking of bread. He continued to show himself to believers by preparing, serving and sharing meals. This act continued among the followers of Jesus and the breaking and sharing of bread became a sacred act of remembrance, making present God’s gracious act in Jesus the Christ in the special moment of remembering.

"The term Eucharist, derived from the Greek word eucharista, which means “thanksgiving,” is used by Mark, Matthew and Luke in their accounts of the institution of the Holy Meal. A verb form of this Greek word is used by Paul, emphasizing that Jesus gave thanks before breaking the bread and offering the cup. The joyous acts of thanksgiving that permeated the observance of this rite undoubtedly caused the second-century Christian writers to use the term Eucharist as the standard name for this meal.

“Around the Table of the Lord, God’s people are in communion with Christ and with all who belong to Christ. Reconciliation with Christ compels reconciliation with one another. All the baptized faithful are to be welcomed to the Table, and none shall be excluded because of race, sex, age, economic status, social class, handicapping condition, difference of culture or language, or any barrier created by human injustice.” (Book of Order, W-2.4006).

“The Lord’s Supper is to be observed on the Lord’s Day, in the regular place of worship, and in a manner suitable to the particular occasion and local congregation. It is appropriate to celebrate the Lord’s Supper as often as each Lord’s Day. It is to be celebrated regularly and frequently enough to be recognized as integral to the Service for the Lord’s Day” (Book of Order, W-2.4009).

“The invitation to the Lord’s Supper is extended to all who have been baptized, remembering that access to the Table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. In preparing to receive Christ in this Sacrament, the believer is to confess sin and brokenness, to seek reconciliation with God and neighbor, and to trust in Jesus Christ for cleansing and renewal. Even one who doubts or whose trust is wavering may come to the Table in order to be assured of God’s love and grace in Christ Jesus” (Book of Order, W-2.4011a).

"It is a strong doctrine of Communion that we Presbyterians hold. The physical nature of the bread and the wine does not change. And yet Jesus is genuinely present here, as he promised, to sustain and strengthen his people. And we receive him into our inmost being in reliance on and in obedience to that promise."

April Treasured Tuesday

Hobcaw Barony

On April 25, we will meet at Hobcaw Barony in Georgetown at 1:00 pm for a two-hour tour of Bellefield Plantation. Hobcaw Barony is a 16,000 acre research reserve. It is one of the few underdeveloped tracts on the Waccamaw Neck. The Bellefield Plantation Tour takes place on the grounds of Bellefield Plantation, the home of Belle Baruch, daughter of Bernard and Anne Baruch. Belle built her permanent home in what she called the "friendliest woods in the world." As the house stands empty and awaits restoration, these tours provide a chance to walk the grounds, see the stables, kennels, garage and gardens of a once stately home as well as step inside the house to understand Belle's simple lifestyle and her love of the Lowcountry .

The cost is $22.00 with a 12-person limit. We currently have 11 spots available. To register, mail a check made payable to Camp Pee Dee Retreat Center to: Camp Pee Dee Retreat Center 1201 Camp Pee Dee Road Bennettsville, S.C., 29512 Please be sure to add a note indicating your name, the number of people you are registering and your church. Registrations must be received no later than April 7. Please contact Kelly Boone Sloan at (843) 479-3051 with any questions or to register.

With the clearing of the land, we became a more visible church. But how are we going to make the visibility and the land work to our advantage? We have been provided with a large plot of land that gives us immeasurable dreams of what we can do for the future ministry of the church. So good news, space is not a problem as we grow. We have awesome volunteers that keep the grounds beautiful.

With this land, there is maintenance needed. The maintenance of the land is a visible sign to the community that we take pride in our appearance.

We will be collecting a 5th Sunday Offering on April 30 to continue the upkeep and beautification of the property. We ask that you help us maintain the outward presence of the property as we continue to grow with God’s love internally.
