and Karen Brignac to ensure that the latest initiatives from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality will be addressed. I hope to see you at our Fall Conference.

This was a very busy sum-mer for the Louisiana Section. In July, we had a strategic planning retreat to continue our efforts to provide value to our membership. Tony Van Der Vooren, who is the cur-rent president of A&WMA came to the weekend meeting to moderate the strategic plan-ning session and give us his wisdom and perspective.

As a result, several areas were targeted for action in-cluding providing the best speakers and topics for our meetings and beginning an initiative to more actively involve the “young” profes-sionals in our association. To this end, we will be contacting several of you directly to help

us work on these initiatives and expand our insight on how to achieve our goals.

The August lunch meeting in Baton Rouge was well at-tended by over 80 profession-als and was very timely for all of us working diligently to meet the emission inventory requirements using the new ERIC system for reporting. We are continuing our ef-fort to provide this kind of up-to-date technical information with our two-day Fall Confer-ence which will be held in Baton Rouge on October 29th and 30th. The event will be entitled “The Climate Policy Puzzle: Putting the Pieces Together” and will be held in the Washington DC area on April 2 and 3, 2008. L o u i s i a n a S c i e n c e a n d E n g i n e e r i n g F a i r Each year, the Louisiana Section participates in judg-ing the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair, plac-ing particular emphasis on environmental projects sub-mitted by students in grades 9 through 12. Winners re-ceive an award plaque and a cash stipend in honor of their hard earned efforts. We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s awards: First Place: “Ozone Pollu-tion: Are Inversions a Fac-tor?”, presented by Miss Lynne Chapman, St. Jo-seph’s Academy in East Baton Rouge Parish. Second Place: “Recycle Content vs. Ring Crush”,

presented by Miss Lexi Romine, Caddo Parish Mag-net High School. Third Place: “The Toxicity of Nanoparticles”, presented by Mr. Brenden Walter from Doyline High School

The Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair provides a unique educational opportu-nity for public and non-public school students in grades 6 through 12. Through development and presentation of science and engineering projects, stu-dents enhance their ability to: • Make observations; • Ask questions regard-

ing scientific phenom-ena;

• Formulate ideas regard-ing the solution to a problem; and

• Effectively present their works to society.

Most educators agree that this type of activity provides the ultimate learning experi-ence.

Each year, the Air & Waste Management Associa-tion is pleased to offer its Scholarship Award Program at the collegiate level, pro-moting air and waste man-agement practices by encour-aging academic excellence in these areas. Letters request-ing applicants for the schol-arship award were sent to universities in the geographi-cal region of the section, and applications for the scholar-ship award program have been received. We are proud to an-nounce the winners of this year’s awards. They were chosen by the selection com-mittee based on their interest

statements, resumes, GPA and interviews which dem-onstrated their dedication to environmental issues. Our annual first place, Gus vonBodungen award, in the amount of $3,000, went to Ms. Heather Owens at Louisiana State University. Three additional students also each received $2,000 each: • Ms. Jasleen Kaur, Lou-

isiana State University; • Mr. Samuel Best, Lou-

isiana State University; • Mr. James Dicharry,

Louisiana State Univer-sity.

Congratulations to all our scholarship winners!!!

The primary purpose of the Louisiana Section Adopt-A-School program is to se-lect an elementary school at which the Section will award a cash donation for use at the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grade level in the area of science education. It is the Louisiana Section’s desire that the funds be allocated to a spe-cific project or purpose rather than simply becoming assimilated into the school’s general fund.

In addition to the cash donation, the Louisiana Sec-tion also endeavors to assist the school in its program for the year by providing speak-ers and arranging other edu-cational offerings throughout the section year.

No specific form for the pro-posal is required. The pro-posals will be evaluated equally on need and quality of the proposed program.

The Louisiana Section re-quests that, at a minimum, the following information be provided regarding the school being nominated:

1. General background in-formation about the school, including: the number of students in school and in the 5th/6th /7th/8th grades; the demographics of student population.

2. The significance the cash donation would have in the school’s overall program of science education, specifi-cally: a clear explanation of why the school needs the grant, and the total number of students who will benefit from the grant.

3. Specific information re-garding the intended use for the funds and the need for teacher training in the envi-ronmental sciences.

The more project-oriented

grant requests tend to score higher points with the judges than simple grant requests for money for the school’s general science funding.

Ideally, but not a require-ment, a Louisiana Section member nominating a school should be involved with the school and would be expected to act as liaison between the association and the school in the presenta-tion of the award and any additional activities sched-uled for the school during the year.

Recipients of the grant will be requested to attend a Louisiana Section dinner meeting in New Orleans in January to receive the funds. Attendance is en-couraged, but not required. Details will be provided at a later date.

Proposals should be re-

dinner meeting at Midden-dorf’s on September 20th.

We look forward to re-ceiving your nominations for the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award.

Valerie L. Mayhall Awards Chair

In 2001, the Louisiana Section of the Air & Waste Management Association established an annual award to recognize outstanding achievement in the fields of air pollution control or waste management. The award recipient is a company or individual whose contribu-tion to the state of the art technology has been accom-plished within the last two years.

Due to Hurricane Katrina, the Section did not select an award winner in 2006, for the year 2005. Therefore, this year, we selected two award winners, one for a project implemented in the year 2005, and the other for a project implemented in the year 2006.

The Section has been pleased with the high quality of projects nominated for the award in previous years, and the years 2005 and 2006 were no exception. The win-ner for the year 2006 was the East Baton Rouge City-Parish DPW Environmental Division. The title of the winning project was “Hurricane Woody Debris Converted Into Boiler Fuel.” The goal of the project was to mulch or chip the woody debris from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and to use the resulting chips as boiler fuel for local industry. By exerting extra effort to proc-ess the debris through a chip-per instead of burning or landfilling it, the City-Parish was able to create a source

of income, benefit the envi-ronment, save landfill air-space, and provide a cost- effective source of fuel for local industry. Approxi-mately 550,000 cubic yards of debris were handled in this manner as a result of this project.

The 2007 Award winner was Cytec Industries, Inc. Cytec’s project was entitled “Burn Landfill Gas in Proc-ess Air Preheater.” The project entailed using land-fill gas, a renewable biofuel derived from decomposing organic material, in a proc-ess air preheater. The pro-ject reduced Cytec’s energy costs, generated a new reve-nue stream for the local parish government from gas royalties, and reduced the area’s carbon and nitrogen emissions that would have been released had the land-

fill gas not replaced natural gas in the fired heater.

Both award winners, East Baton Rouge City-Parish DPW Environmental Division (2006), and Cytec Industries, Inc. (2007) were honored at the Section’s

After months of preparations and training at such locations as ULL and the Wadill Solar Building, energy ran high among the contestants and the organizers. As the teams of students moved through the stations demonstrating their knowledge in aquatics, for-estry, soils, energy and wild-life. Each team was also re-quired to make an oral presen-tation incorporating their

knowledge in all the subjects. The perky team from Parkview Baptist captured the first place award in the Oral Presentation category.

The Acadiana Home School team won the overall competi-tion and represented Louisiana at the Canon Envirothon in Ge-neva, NY in August. The Park-view Baptist team won second place, taking a handsome plaque back to their school. The Louisi-ana Section of the Air & Waste Management Association pro-vided $200 savings bonds for each student on the Parkview Baptist team. The St. James

Parish FFA team won third place, taking a handsome laser etched plaque back to their school.

Organizers send their special thanks to the Louisiana Section of the Air & Waste Management Association for their generous support of the Louisiana Envi-rothon. Individuals and corpora-tions interested in sponsoring the Louisiana Envirothon should email Colette Anzalone of ULL at [email protected]. Visit www.deq.louisiana.gov/envirothon for more information on the event.

The Louisiana Section of the A&WMA is offering opportunities for companies to sponsor breaks or meals at this year's Fall Confer-ence. Sponsorship costs are $500 for a Breakfast or Break Sponsorship and $1,000 for a Lunch or Dinner Sponsorship. Please note, these sponsorship funds do not cover the actual cost of the event. In addition, sponsorship is non-exclusive - that is, two or more companies may be accepted for the same activity. However, every effort will be made to spread the sponsorships evenly throughout the program. If your company is interested in an exclusive sponsorship for an event, we will be happy to work with you. Please call for further information. In return for your sponsorship of a Breakfast or Break, you will be given the opportunity to erect a sign of your design in the area in which the event is taking place. Signs are expected to be prepared with good professional judgment. The sign may not state or imply that the sponsor is covering the actual full cost of the activity. If it does, the sign will be removed. For a Lunch or Dinner Sponsorship, the same applies as above for the posting of signs. In addition, you may distribute a promotional gift of some kind. The promotional item may be set on the tables at each place or arranged on a side table for distribution. If you are interested in a sponsorship opportunity at this year's conference, please complete this form. Payments may be made by cash, check, or credit card. Make checks payable to Louisiana Section A&WMA.
