President’s Message

Janice Schwartz-Donahue, President

She’at Hadehak — “Extraordinary Moment”Jewish life has always made adjustments in

times of emergency and crisis and this year is no exception!

This is an extraordinary moment in time. Knowing that the COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in our community has certainly given all of us hope that our mandated physical separation will soon come to an end. We are looking towards reopening our Preschool in the summer, as well as lifting restrictions to open our building for Shabbat services and life cycle events. I am hoping that by the time spring officially begins, we will all have had the opportunity to receive vaccinations, and our world will begin to feel a little safer.

Like many houses of worship across the country, we spent the last year reinventing how we worship, learn, study, and support each other. We took unprecedented action in March of 2020 to communicate with our congregants through the Jewish principle of ‘Hesed:’ Profound Love and KI-Kindness. Our clergy continue to nurture any in our community who seek comfort due to the uncertainty, grief, and anxiety that the pandemic has provoked.

By now, all of our congregants are aware of how we overcame challenges to learn to Zoom, how our programming and Shabbat services remain enriched and unabated, and how our KI caring network thrived through our efforts with other faith-based communities in our neighborhood. As we move through the pandemic in tandem, our corner sign shouts out, “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself ” reminding everyone who traverses Old York Road that we are all in this together.

When we chose Tikkun HaNefesh as our theme for this year little did we imagine that we would be spending most of this time focused on nurturing our souls as we slogged through a pandemic, hour by hour, day by day, week by

week, and month by month. Now as a year has passed we realize even a global pandemic could not stop our celebrations or dampen our spirits.

It is all about survival! Leaving Egypt as one nation, finding the power to work together as we watched plague after plague thrust upon the Egyptians is an analogy we can make this year when we discuss the Passover story at our seders. Our tables may seem empty of guests but our wine glasses are overflowing with hope. Truly, Pesach 2021 also brings us to an extraordinary moment in time.

While I intend to wish you all a “Chag Sameach,” I also need to share a more serious

accounting of the state of our synagogue. When spring arrives, so do plans for our Annual Spring Fundraiser and with it the proverbial ASK that accompanies our gathering together. For years now, KI membership numbers have been dwindling, religious school enrollment shrinking, and fundraisers have had to fill the budget gap. Like many religious institutions around our country, and because of the influence of the pandemic, we are experiencing

a budget deficit far beyond ones we have encountered before.

At KI, we pride ourselves in being able to boast that since our formation in 1847, our sacred community has had an enduring history of philanthropy. Right now, the very continuity of our community currently rests on our shoulders.

As President of the Congregation, I thank you, for your generous support in recent years and I look to your support once again, at this She’at Hadehak, this “Extraordinary Moment,” and this time of emergency!

Chag Sameach,Janice

Our tables may seem empty of guests but

our wine glasses are overflowing

with hope.

Rabbi’sMessage

Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D.

Back to Work: Step by Step, Inch by InchIt has been a long time coming. On Wednesday,

October 28, 2020, I was scheduled for a regular doctor’s appointment including my annual fall flu shot. Little did I know that my whole life was going to change and that after a single “listen” on the stethoscope, I would be on my way to Abington Hospital in an ambulance for open-heart surgery, followed by a long period of convalescence and cardio rehab. In fact, I was really lucky. My primary physician was “on the ball” and the staff at the hospital were uniformly excellent as were the people in the home nurse program and now “in-house” therapeutic treatment. I did not see it coming. I was not being treated for anything in this direction. As they say, this was the “hand of cards I was dealt” and lucky for me the deck was in decent order and I am now slowly returning to my old life. Of course, not everything is going to be the same. The pizza, subs, and other weapons of (body) mass destruction are now gone, as are the 20-hour days and the 8-day weeks. More common sense, better allocation of time, fewer projects, and healthier eating is what is on my plate. I did not come through this storm just to land on a helicopter pad. My goal is a long run- way with smooth flying and gentle landings.

But enough of the metaphors. As I pick up the pieces, I am starting to restore parts of my old routine: a weekly meeting with my assistant, Sarah Morrison; weekly senior staff meetings; Shabbat and holiday services; B’nai Mitzvah lessons; and Confirmation. As best as possible, I am making daily pastoral phone calls and participating in Zoom life cycle events. However, until a sufficient number of COVID vaccines have been admini-stered most of my work will remain virtual. I hope that sometime later this year (I do not know which month) “in-person” Judaism will resume at KI, probably beginning with our Preschool. I look forward to all of it.

Now, my downtime was not a complete loss. With the help of my daughter, Chana, I was able to assemble a collection of my recent poems and put them together in book form, both online and print. The Kindness Response (by me, Rabbi Lance J. Sussman) is now available at Barnes and Noble and online at Amazon. With the help, again from

Chana, as well as my long-term volunteer assistant, Joan Myerson Shrager, I have also made good progress on a book of my sermons and essays reflecting my 20 years of work at KI. The book will be called A Portrait of an American Rabbi, and will include nearly 100 of my articles and reflections. The book will be organized chronologically and will also be available in “e” and print editions. I am not exactly sure of the release date yet but I am hoping this volume, my second book of sermons, will be available by the High Holy Days 2021. I also have several articles forthcoming this spring, one on the Haftarot and the other an essay on our Landau windows in a special art book to be published by the Penn State University Press.

OK, so you are probably saying, I really did not take much of a break, but I actually limited my editing time and relied heavily on my helpers.

I truly look forward to getting back to work. One, I love my work. Becoming and being a rabbi is/was a calling for me. Second, when news spread of my medical emergency, I received hundreds of get-well cards (Hallmark must have done well) from you, the congregation. I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, concern, and love from so many of you. There is an old joke about how the President of a shul once visited a rabbi in the hospital and reported that she had good news. “The Board voted 5 to 4,” the President reported, “that you should get better.” Looks like my vote was better than that and now I feel I must get back to the work of being your rabbinic partner in Jewish and everyday life just as I have been for the last 20 years.

So, step by step, inch by inch, I am coming back to my rabbinic vocation and hopefully, as the rate of vaccination intensifies, it will be in person and not just online. Again and always, thank you for your support during this crazy time in my life. Meanwhile, a happy and healthy Passover to you and your families. May we all be delivered from the plague we are still enduring.

Shabbat Shalom and Todah!Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D.

Join Us in CelebrationRoss and I invite you to celebrate in the

Bat Mitzvah of our daughter, Aria Elyse Levy. We have been looking forward to sharing this milestone with our beloved community, and even though there are restrictions due to COVID-19, we invite you to share in her Bat Mitzvah virtually on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at www.kenesethisrael.com/livestream.

Aria has been deeply impacted by the love and support of our community. Starting with preschool, where she made life-long friendships, she received a strong education, which instilled in her a love of reading and Jewish learning. At a young age, Maya Rigler, who taught Aria how important it is to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand and research for Childhood Cancer, inspired her. She held her own lemonade stands and she is currently continuing to support this cause.

There are opportunities that Aria has had only because of our incredible community. She went to Lowell Elementary School with her Mitzvah mentors, Marci Abt and Toby Grubman, and tutored children as part of our Mitzvoteinu Program. She also traveled with her class on the Civil Rights Journey to Atlanta and Alabama, learning about the history of Civil Rights and how our heritage roots us in the constant fight for equal rights.

Aria’s KI teachers have encouraged her and she has often said, “I feel like I can be myself at KI.” When Aria was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, and had to be homeschooled for six months, many members from our KI community took time out of their schedules to teach her about art, gardening, and Holocaust education.

KI has supported Aria’s journey to be a camper at Camp Harlam, another place where Aria has flourished. She has learned leadership and independence there. This year, Aria has taken on being a Madricha for our KI 2nd Grade as she felt it was important to give back to her community that has given so much to her.

Aria’s Bat Mitzvah is a moment for us to share with you, our gratitude for the love and support that has flowed from your hearts from the day I became your cantor. It was at KI that I met Ross; it was on the KI Bimah that we were married; our children attended the KI preschool and discovered their love of learning and the deepest friendships. It is in the KI religious school where the power of community blossomed, and in the sanctuary where joy, prayer, and learning join together for the blessings of happiness and peace.

Please join us in this great moment of happiness for the Levy and KI Family!

Worship Schedule and CalendarDue to the current situation with the coronavirus, we cannot give you definitive times for worship or calendar programming. We ask that you check our weekly e-KI and the KI webpage for the most current information.

Everyone at the TableWhen I was growing up, every year at

my family’s seder we would sing (to the tune of Clementine):

“Said the father, to his children at the seder you will dine you will eat your fill of matzah you will drink four cups of wine.”

The song went on to talk about the father’s four sons, each with their own temperaments. The song continues by telling how the sons’ varying attitudes and approaches should be a prod to the father to provide certain answers, crafted for each of their ears, minds, and hearts.

For those who do not remember, the traditional text (in part) reads:

“Corresponding to four sons did the Torah speak; one [who is] wise, one [who is] evil, one who is innocent and one who doesn’t know to ask.”

Each in his turn asks a question (or refrains from doing so), according to his particular character. And the father is told to respond in kind, recognizing the spiritual and psycho- logical place from which the question is asked.

Now, it is not lost on many of us that the Haggadah traditionally characterizes these four as sons. As boys — indeed, boys of a father. The original text paints a picture in which it is harder for folks who are neither boys nor men to see ourselves.

So, it was not long into our teenage years when my siblings and I began to write verses that included daughters. Some may say that we were failing to respect tradition— it is from a classical rabbinic text, based in Torah, after all. But, in fact, we were honoring the deep meaning of the text and of the seder’s main duty: We must not only tell the story of our slavery and freedom— we must ensure the story is understood in our bones. We must ensure that we see ourselves in the story— each of us. In order for understanding to be deep; in order for us to fulfill the mitzvah of

passing the story midor l’dor— from generation to generation — we must ensure it is understood and personally felt by all who attend.

When we look to passing and teaching our traditions, vibrantly and sustainably, to the next generation, we will only be successful if we understand and respond to the learner in the place where they stand. The seder opens the door to all who are “hungry” for recognition and meaning. The “Four Children” section of the Haggadah reminds us that there is no one way to be in order to participate in this story; in order to be at the table.

And, truthfully, we change which child we are throughout our lives. So, while in our lesser moments we may want to look askance at the very different child sitting beside or across from us at the table, the Haggadah protects us from these worst instincts. It reminds us that though we are one child today, tomorrow, we may be another. We change. We grow. But there is always a place for us at the seder and a part for us in our Jewish story.

I can definitely say I did not expect my last year on the KIFTY board and my last year at KI to look like this. I always looked forward to Tuesdays, walking through the big double doors and being greeted by the warm, welcoming faces in the lobby.

Growing up at KI, I always considered this place a second home. With COVID-19, being unable to go to this special place has made me realize how special those Tuesdays — yet sometimes hesitant about the traffic-filled drives and having to get up from my comfy bed — really are to me.

Serving as one of three KIFTY presidents this year, I knew I had an important role in helping to keep this tight-knit KI family together and in touch. In order to do this, we have been

implementing virtual events and get-togethers. We also have KIFTY meetings once a month and I love being able to see everyone’s faces and catch up, even though it is over Zoom.

Although, this year is not how I imagined, the Tuesday night meetings still bring a smile to face as well as those around me. This year has been tough, but I can’t imagine getting through it without my KI and KIFTY family. I am and always will be so thankful that I have grown up at KI and had a chance to get involved with KIFTY four years ago.

If you are thinking of getting involved, you should definitely reach out to Danielle and apply to be on the KIFTY board! I have no doubt that you will get just as much out of it as I have.

A Star Among UsLee Slobotkin headlined a streamed show, Color Me Lee,

on Sunday, January 3 presented by Women of KI with support by Adult Education.

Lee, an Administrative Assistant and Digital Content Manager at KI, has a background in professionally performing and acting, both on and off Broadway. Color Me Lee featured Lee and friends performing well-known tunes from Broadway shows Wicked, Book of Mormon, and Little Shop of Horrors, among others, plus favorite songs made famous by the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, and many others.

Lee is a true performer with a great voice, an enveloping personality, and a presentation style that leaves you wishing for more. His choice of selections and interpretations was top notch. In addition, his talented friends joined in to perform duets, making his show even more exciting. Plus he used streaming technology to its fullest.

We are truly lucky to have this “Star Among Us” and look forward to many more opportunities for him to perform.

A Different Kind of CelebrationOur annual Spring Celebration Weekend

is always one of my favorite times of the year. It is a time when the entire KI community can come together and celebrate the good that we do, and honor some of our extraordinary people. This year it is going to be very different than in past years. Last year we ended up cancelling most of the event; the pandemic was so new and we were not yet experts at virtual entertainment. Now, for better or worse, we are. This year, having been so unlike any in our recent memory, we are planning to present our tributes differently too. Instead of honoring particular individuals, we will be honoring the actions of those at KI who stepped up and adapted everything they knew to keep KI thriving and to help the community. We will have a special Shabbat service on Friday, April 23, followed by themed zonegs, (Zoom onegs) of your choice.

On Saturday, April 24 there will be an evening of entertainment for you to enjoy.

While the Spring Celebration Weekend is always a time to celebrate and have fun, it is also our biggest fundraiser of the year. The money we collect from dues, tuition, and other revenue throughout the year leaves us with a deficit. We rely on the generosity of our members during the Spring Celebration Weekend to help. And this year, we need your support more than ever.

Ways you can help support the Spring Celebration Weekend:

• Place an ad in our virtual ad book — you will receive a list of different ideas.

• Be a sponsor of the weekend.• Attend the virtual events and have fun!We can do virtually anything together — I’m

looking forward to seeing you on April 23 and 24!

Lifelong LearningBy Rita Rosen Poley

1 Excerpted from The Inquirer, by Andee Hochman, posted May 3, 2017.2 Excerpted from the artist’s biography.

This spring the Temple Judea Museum (TJM) will present “Journey into Darkness…Heal with the Beauty of Life,” its first joint exhibition with HAMEC, The Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center, now located in the KI building. The show will include objects from TJM’s Collection of the Holocaust and Acts of Oppression and Resistance. HAMEC will present paintings by the late Harry Somers and sculptural reliefs by the late Frank Root.

HAMEC: Opened in 1961, HAMEC, the first Holocaust Museum in the United States, educates students and adults, personalizing the Holocaust so that they learn the consequences of racism, ethnic cleansing, and intolerance. A variety of Holocaust awareness pro- grams are offered, including eyewitness testimonies, personal interactions with eyewitnesses, two live theater performances, and docent-led tours.

The TJM Holocaust Collection: For the most part, the objects in the TJM collection were received as donations from people who came to own them through personal experience. As such, they represent a unique perspective of lives that were affected, directly or indirectly, by the Holocaust. In addition, the museum has been able to purchase key objects on eBay and at public auctions. Among those are press photographs taken during and after WWII. With the addition of the gift of the Alvin Gilens’ Photograph Collection, TJM is able to document through rare, original images, the plight of Jewish victims and refugees during the war and, later, during resettlement. This collection also contains contemp- orary artwork by artists such as Kezia Lechner, Mary Costanza, Robbin Ami Silberberg, and Alvin Gilens.

Lise Marlowe, a teacher at Elkins Park Middle School, who won the History Channel’s teacher of the year award in 2006, and is also a KI member, a JQuest teacher, and active with HAMEC, is largely responsible for the idea for this joint exhibition.

Harry Somers, who died in 2013, was just 16 when he made his daring escape from Nazi Germany and began a new life, eventually becoming a painter and beginning to exhibit and to sell his work. Because the memories of his harrowing ordeal were always close to the surface, it became Somers’ mission to respond to the hate he had experienced by making art infused with beauty, color, and peace. Painting became an escape for Somers, a way to cope with the loss of his family and the trauma of surviving Nazi Germany.1

Frank Root was born in 1936 in Philadelphia. After serving in the Korean War, he eventually became involved in window display. After a period of apprenticeship at the Blum Store, he went on to become a highly respected display director specializing in fine jewelry displays for Bailey, Banks, and Biddle, and the J.E. Caldwell Company where his miniaturized windows became part of the joy of shopping on Chestnut Street. In 1976, at age 40, after open-heart surgery, his work took a different turn, into the fine arts. His important and well-respected “Holocaust Series,” (parts of which will be displayed at TJM), is a result of that transition.2

From Frank Root: “A friend asks why I dwell on this period, as the world has seen many holocausts. When faced with this same question, Eberhard Jackel, a German historian of that era answered, ‘Never before had any state with all the authority of its responsible leader decided

and announced that it intended to kill off a particular group of human beings, including the old, women, children, … as completely as possible and had then translated this decision into action with every possible power at the state’s command.’ When someone asks me why am I doing this, the answer is ‘because holocausts can happen.’”

Lifelong LearningFrom the Meyers LibraryBy Linda Roth, Director of Library Services

The Meyers Library continues to serve as a resource for the KI congregation and the surrounding community. The “Foyer Lending and Return Program” is a great way for you to keep up with you reading list in a contact-free way. Call or email the library at [email protected] for more information on how to borrow books.

The Meyers Library Adult Book Discussion Group will be discussing The Lost Shtetl by Max Gross, via Zoom on Wednesday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m.

“[This is a] remarkable debut novel — written with the fearless imagination of Michael Chabon and the piercing humor of Gary Shteyngart—about a small Jewish village in the Polish forest that is so secluded no one knows it exists… until now. For decades, the tiny Jewish shtetl of Kreskol existed in happy isolation, virtually untouched and unchanged. Spared by the Holocaust and the Cold War, its residents enjoyed remarkable peace. It missed out on cars, and electricity, and the internet, and indoor plumbing. But when a marriage dispute spins out of control, the whole town comes crashing into the twenty-first century… Divided between those embracing change and those clinging to its old world ways, the people of Kreskol will have to find a way to come together… or risk their village disappearing for good.”

In the first three weeks in May, we will be able to benefit from the knowledge of Evonne and Isaak Kruger with an exploration of some of the short stories and poems written by Grace Paley. Grace Paley (December 11, 1922–August 22, 2007) was a [ Jewish] American short story author, poet,

teacher, and political activist. Paley wrote three critically acclaimed collections of short stories, which were compiled in the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist The Collected Stories in 1994.

The Grace Paley Series will look like this:1. Evonne will cover the Introduction to Grace Paley,

outlining her multifaceted life and poetry.2. Isaak review the very famous short story “Goodbye and

his life in Philadelphia. Amy Cohen will share a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award-winning 15-minute film she produced to coincide with the 2018 installation of a memorial to Catto at City Hall. Following the film screening, Ms. Cohen will lead an interactive discussion about Catto’s current relevance.

American Education: Defining a Nation, with Susan Adler Monday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m.This talk will examine the development of the public school in the U.S. beginning with the rise of the “common school” in the 19th century. The talk will explore changing educational aims that emerged as the nation developed. Educational aims have shifted in importance from unifying the country in the

early years to the importance of educating young people who will contribute to economic strength and prosperity. Throughout, a third major goal of education, social mobility, has remained important.

The Jewish Connection to Art, with Phyllis Gotkin Monday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m.This presentation will cover works of art from the walls of the PMA, all of which have some type of Jewish connection. The timeline of “Jewish Connections” runs from the early 1800s to today. Although Jewish artists create some of the works of art, most of them have a different Jewish connection, such as donor, owner, contributor, collector, etc.

HaMotzi Committee Report, January 21, 2021By Sue Fried ([email protected]) and Paulette Sterman-Soroko ([email protected]), HaMotzi Dinner Chairs

There is no doubt that the HaMotzi Program is the busiest and most vital it has ever been during the recent months of food instability and need in our nation. We have over 150 volunteers who participate in this program, and they are outstanding. Their jobs include shopping, cooking, bagging groceries, writing notes, distributing meals and groceries, directing traffic, making phone calls, and much more.

We distribute approximately 150 meals on distribution days, with another 50 meals either picked up mid-month, or delivered to homes.

We have been blessed with the generosity of congregants and community members whose donations have allowed us to keep supporting these essential dinners. We are extremely grateful to those who have been able to fully or partially

sponsor entire HaMotzi dinners: Gay & John Binswanger; Barbara & Charles Kahn; Lois & Stan Singer; Ellen & Neil Sklaroff; Rabbi Lance & Liz Sussman; Janet & Alan Widra; Peggy Goldenberg; Jean Paul; Brith Shalom Lodge #8; Jacob Stein & Family; Marnie & Jason Wildman; Anonymous KI family, and many, many more.

Thank you to Dan Kaufman who baked delicious cookies for our December and January dinners.

Thank you to our students, their families, and others who wrote lovely notes to include in our dinners.

Thank you also to the following knitters who provided scarves and hats for our Hamotzi guests: Joan Brantz, Arlene Brest, Lynore Eisman, Mindi Glachman, Rochelle Margasak, and Carole Slotsky.

Join with us and becomea part of “the nurturing soul

of our KI Community.”

A New U.S. Strategy for the Israeli Palestinian Conflict*Ilan Goldenberg, Michael Koplow, and Tamara Cofman Wittes, CNAS Report

Today’s realities demand that the U.S. change its approach to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Its current focus is on high-profile diplomatic initiatives that aim for a permanent agreement in which the U.S. is the central mediator. Instead, the U.S. should focus on taking tangible steps, both on the ground and diplomatically, that will improve the freedom, prosperity, and security of all people living between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, while also cultivating the conditions for a future two-state agreement negotiated between the parties.

America’s role as the primary mediator between Israelis and Palestinians has shifted dramatically. In a world where COVID-19, domestic crises, and U.S. competition with China have emerged as urgent concerns for the U.S. government, addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has dropped in priority. Among Arab governments, resolving that conflict is no longer seen as a sine qua non, as evidenced by the recent agreements between Israel, Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates to normalize relations. The Trump Administration has undercut the U.S. role in Israeli–Palestinian peacemaking, by taking a one-sided approach, and aligning the U.S. with Israeli far-right policies, while freezing out the Palestinians.

The authors have laid out a plan that focuses on three central lines of effort:1. Tackle pressing issues that threaten any possibility of

progress in addressing the conflict and keep the U.S. from playing a constructive role.

These would include:a. Resume economic assistance to the Palestinians.b. Focus on freedom of movement, electricity and

water in the Palestinian territories, especially Gaza.c. Deter annexation and settlement construction.

2. Pursue concrete steps to meaningfully improve freedom, security, and prosperity for Israelis and Palestinians, and advance the prospects of an agreed two-state solution to the conflict over the medium term.

3. Reshape the U.S. role for greater persistence and impact, including:

a. Pursue flexible engagement with other international actors, instead of trying to monopolize the work of Arab–Israeli diplomacy.

b. Strengthen engagement with Jordan and harness warming ties between Israel and the Arab Gulf states to promote positive synergy with Israeli-Palestinian relations.

c. Root Israeli–Palestinian policymaking in an inclusive interagency process, instead of concentrating action on the issue at the Secretary of State and Presidential level.

In Our CommunityHistorian Lisa Tetrault to Speak—When Women Won the Right to Vote: A History UnfinishedBy Arlene B. Holtz, Ph.D., Chair, and Barbara A. McNeil

March is Women’s History Month, and the Social Justice Committee will present Dr. Lisa Tetrault of Carnegie Mellon University to speak about the 19th Amendment. But wait! If you think that’s the Amendment that gave women the right to vote, Dr. Tetrault will explain that you are wrong. And that’s why we’re presenting this program. In fact, neither the U.S. Constitution, nor the 15th Amendment, nor the 19th Amendment gave anyone the right to vote. Instead, the Constitution defines a narrow set of reasons that citizens may not be denied the franchise. For example, the 15th Amendment prevents states from denying a citizen the right to vote based on “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” And the 19th Amendment prevents states from denying a citizen the right to vote based on sex. Our Founders left it to the states to otherwise determine voter eligibility, and this has facilitated voter suppression of different groups throughout our history.

Dr. Tetrault will discuss the history of the 19th Amendment and women’s suffrage with a special focus on the men and women who fought for women’s suffrage and the impacts of racism on this struggle. She will explain the ways that the Amendments pertaining to voting are misunderstood by most Americans. Her talk also will position 1920 as the middle of a much larger story about the pursuit of voting rights, a struggle that is today unfinished and ongoing.

Mazal Tov to Our Bat and Bar Mitzvah StudentsMy name is Olivia Alexandria Moriconi and I like to be called Olivia. My Bat Mitzvah is March 6. For my Mitzvah Project, I was going to Lowell Elementary School to work with the children in need. I helped them read, write, and assist with homework in aftercare. We held multiple school fundraisers at KI to raise money for the teachers to

purchase new school supplies for the students. My Mitzvah Project was very important and meaningful to me. I attend Sandy Run Middle School. My hobbies include playing with friends, reading, playing tennis, playing board/card games, traveling, helping troubleshoot computers, spending time with my family, watching movies, swimming and riding my bike. The sports I most participate in are tennis, golf, swim- ming and softball. My parents are Justin and Shira Moriconi.

My name is Ava Rae Bailkin, and my Bat Mitzvah is March 13. For my mitzvah project, before COVID, I participated in the HaMotzi dinners at KI for people who could not afford food or just needed someone to eat with for company. When I went to these dinners, I helped prepare food, served food, cleaned up, and helped where

needed. I attend Abington Junior High School. I play soccer, basketball, and softball. My hobbies include hanging out with friends, playing video games, playing sports, and shopping. My parents are Eric and Jamie Bailkin.

My name is Anjali Laila Holloman and my Bat Mitzvah is April 10. For my Mitzvah Project, I made video recordings of myself reading picture books for little kids who are attending school virtually and for kids who can’t attend school at all due to illness. I shared my “Story Time with Anjali” videos with early childhood students at AFS, A Step

Up Academy, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, in hopes to bring a smile and a love of reading to little kids during the pandemic. I am in the 7th grade at Abington Friends School. I enjoy reading, baking, and spending time in nature. My parents are Austin and Anu Holloman.

My name is Anya Vella Geynisman and my Bat Mitzvah is April 24. For my Mitzvah Project, I helped at the HaMotzi dinners at KI. I also helped students at KI on Tuesday evenings. I also studied with KI congregant Lisa Marlowe and interviewed a Holocaust survivor. I will produce a video about her story with our time together. I

also volunteer with the 2nd Grade as a Madricha with KI teacher Melanie D’Orazio. I am raising money for the Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute. I attend Barrack Hebrew Academy. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and listening to music. I like to play tennis. My parents are Ross M. and Amy E. Levy.

were incorrect. How could that be? Some plaques were the result of surviving family members wanting to memorialize them, but often long after the actual death. (An example of this time lag, though not the date of death, would be Pvt. Snellenburg, a Civil War casualty memorialized by his brothers after they joined KI in the mid-1870s.)

We look forward to when we can again frequent the Archives Room and respond to inquires which require the physical inspection of records. In the meantime, feel free to leave inquiries for me in the Administrative Office.

In the last issue of Shalom KI, I wrote about family trees as an avenue to create, understand, and pass down one’s family history. The fact that indicated DNA matches, by themselves, cannot create the desired history, we must rely on research. There are plenty of documents and databases available. The problem is that some are less reliable than others are; and only some are easily accessible. Some researchers are too anxious to identify a match or connection.

Because there are many first cousins named after the same grandparents, they will likely share birthdays that are within a few years of each other. Thus, records that includes two generations (such as a marriage or death record, which includes parents’ names) add a degree of assurance that the right person is being identified. Census records certainly have this quality, but often lack accuracy with respect to ages and spelling. I have found that some Social Security records are less accurate than the U.S. Military veterans’ death records. One must take, with a grain of salt, the birth dates etched on gravestones — they were obviously based on what survivors thought. Personally, I have found that the birth records of German towns from which my great-grandparents came differed from records of their later

lives and deaths in America, seemingly shedding years as they crossed the Atlantic.

So how do KI’s archival records rate? I find most valuable (and unique for the period) KI’s Religious School Registry which dates from the mid-1870s because its pages include not only the child’s name and age, but the enrolling parent’s name and address. KI marriage records did not include the bride’s and groom’s parents until the 1890s. However, prior to that, Rabbi Hirsch’s KI Marriage Journal from 1866–1888 included where they were born and where they currently lived. Though many from that period were born and raised in Philadelphia, there were many who were born in Germany and, to a lesser extent, in other European environs.

There are shortcomings however. The originals, having been handwritten, may have transcription errors, though I have found surname spelling errors in the printed annual KI Yearbooks of the early 20th century. Despite this, these are valuable because of the inclusion of addresses, deaths, and other events. When Joe Davidson and I were researching the material for the Veterans Memorial Book a few years ago, we discovered that some of the World War I dates of death listed on the plaques
