Spring is a very exciting time for young children.

There are many activities to do with your children during

spring time:

Go on a nature walk with your child.

bird seed.

Here are some of the letters we have been learning:

Ff - as in fashion

Ss -as in spring or sewing

Cc- as in clothes

Bb- as in birds.

Throughout our Pre-school program we have

been working on themes such as: clothes, spring, and

birds.

Students who have been working on clothes,

learned how clothes are made, and how to take care of

your clothes. Children had a chance to design, decorate

and sew their own clothing patterns.

Students who have been working on the birds

theme have learned how birds live and how they survive.

They have also learned about various types of birds.

Students have been exploring Spring, by going

on nature walks, and observing the changes in the envi-

ronment that occur during Spring.

Kindergarten News

This month our Kinder-

garten students learned

about the parts of the

plant, the life cycle of a

plant, and how to grow a

plant. As they pro-

gressed through the unit,

students developed and

applied key comprehen-

sion skills that good

readers use as they read

identifying sequence of

events, retelling, and

drawing conclusions.

Our students LOVED ex-ploring the museum, especially the Butterfly Haven, River Works and Extreme Green House. At the museum students

participated in a hands-on workshop about plants. Each student got to bring back their own seed to plant! It was a fun learning experience.

Our Kindergarten students went on a field trip to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum .

They observed and

recorded growth of

their plant.

In Math, we were working

on comparing sets of ob-

jects, solving a problems by

drawing a picture, making

ABBC pattern using pattern

blocks, sounds, body, ex-

ploring tangrams, measuring

length using nonstandard

units, graphing picture on a

pictograph, identifying a

sphere, ordering objects by

size, identifying shapes as

two or three dimensional.

Recycled Robots

After reading a story about robots and learning

about reducing, reusing, and recycling, in celebra-

tion of Earth Day, we used our knowledge and

creativity to reduce waste. Our first grade stu-

dents, with the help of their families, created their

own robots using recycled materials. The awe-

some creations consisted of recycled cardboard,

metal scraps, paper towel rolls, bottle tops, nuts,

bolts, CDs, plastic bottles, and many more materi-

als. To piece it all together, most of the students

used aluminum foil and tape. Each student pre-

sented his or her robot to the class by listing the

materials used to assemble the project and ex-

plaining how it was made. We hope that you were

able to catch a glimpse of these recycled robots

during report card pick-up day.

Buzzzz! Our classrooms were buzzing with excite-

ment as we learned about the world of bees. Are

you familiar with the life cycle of a bee? Well, ask

any of our first-grade experts and they'll tell you all

about the bee life cycle. The students learned about

how bees grow, what bees eat, how bees communi-

cate, and the different jobs of bees. By reading lots

of fiction and nonfiction stories about bees, we also

learned that while they may often be pesky, bees

have a significant role in our environment. Not only

do they pollinate flowers so they bloom, but they

also make sweet honey. Now that's a terrific insect!

Second Grade News

Weather Or Not!

During the last two weeks, second grade was

busy learning about different types of weather.

Among many things, we studied precipitation, wa-

ter cycle, cloud types, and wind. One activity we

did was made a cloud in a jar. We took a glass jar

and filled it with water and then put shaving

cream at the top to represent a cloud. We slowly

began adding food coloring to the cloud. We

demonstrated how when a cloud gets full of water

it starts to rain. Students were really interested

in learning about weather and enjoyed the differ-

ent activities we did in class.

Students were also excited about displaying their 3D

Shape Cities and their Ouch stories during report card pickup

for all to see!!

Mining For Resources

The students in room 209 are learning about resources. To investigate

this, they did an experiment where they ―mined‖ for raisins. Each child

received an oatmeal raisin cookie. The first thing they did was look at the

cookie to see if they could guess how many raisins were in the cookie.

Next, they used pipettes to put a few drops of water around each raisin.

Then they used toothpicks to ―mine‖ out the raisins. When they were

done ―mining‖ out their raisins, we compared the number of raisins they

thought were in the cookie to the number of raisins that actually were in

the cookie. Everyone enjoyed the experiment.

Third Grade News!

Storytelling in 214

Students of 214 became master story-tellers in class, and at our after school event. Students followed in the foot-

steps of History’s best storytellers with their impressive stories of family histo-

ry and Nature’s biggest mysteries.

The fourth graders worked on state projects this month. Each child had their own

state. They made a state book and created a state diorama to go along with the pro-

ject. Each student did an excellent job using their research and creative skills to

make these beautiful projects! These projects are being displayed outside of the gym.

If you want to learn about the various states our students chose, come check them

out!

Earth Day Projects The fourth grade students have an earth project

coming up this April. Each student has drawn

pictures that represent earth day with three facts

about Earth Day. They will soon be thinking up

three things that they can do to help the Earth.

They are super excited to get involved and make

the Earth a better place. Happy Earth Day!

The fourth graders are using their in-

ventive skills to create a useful invention

that will benefit others. They were chal-

lenged to come up with something that is

makeable, and will be needed in the fu-

This way she won‘t have to cook din-

ner. She can just sit down and relax

the doorway with a wonderful break-

fast for her she will be overjoyed. A

good idea for what to give her would

be: French Toast, Orange Juice, Pan-

cakes, Waffles, Blueberry Muffins,

etc. So long as it‘s not burnt or inedi-

ble, she will love it.

Helping Coupons- Making coupons

on the computer or drawing them

yourself for helping out around your

house is a great idea! You can make

ones for cleaning your room, making

your bed, washing the car, shoveling

snow (for the winter months), raking

leaves, sweeping, etc. Just make sure

heart. Even if it‘s a simple card that

5th grade students are finishing up their author research projects and are getting ready to pre-

sent their research to the class in a creative PowerPoint display. They did a fantastic job re-

searching and learning new techniques on the computer. We are all looking forward to view-

ing each one‘s presentation and expanding our knowledge of various authors and their

books.

6th through 8th graders finished up their African American research projects and learned how

to cite their sources in MLA format. They are now working on creating poetry using 8 differ-

ent types of verse. Their finished product will be an illustrated booklet of their personal po-

ems based on one chosen theme. We have some very talented and creative writers in our Jr.

High! Here is an example of a Tanka poem and a Haiku poem:

WWII B-17 Presentation

On April 18th, Mr. Chip Burger came to our school to talk to us about the WWII battle

plane called the B-17. He spoke to us about the B-17; they were planes created for WWII. They would carry bombs that the American pilots would drop on German bases. These planes would carry ten people who all had specific jobs. The pilots wore several layers of heavy clothes be-cause the planes were up so high, that the air was so much thinner. Since the air was thinner, it was much colder. It was really dangerous to be a pilot of these planes because of the percentage of flights that were shot down by German anti-aircraft units. These planes had very thin lining and a bullet could easily rip through it like butter, so, again, it was very dangerous. If the planes were shot down over water, everyone on the crew would carry a whistle. This whistle was the loudest whistle ever created so a passing ship could hear and rescue the crew. This was an attempt to prevent them from dying of hypothermia. The English Channel was so cold it would have only taken a few short minutes for them to freeze to death. He brought in replicas of everything that the crew members wore during a flight and had a few people put them on. They saw just how heavy and how much of a burden it really was to wear all the gear. We would like to thank Mr. Burger for coming in and sharing his knowledge with us.

Come one! Come all! If you are a 3rd or 4th grade student at Bridge Elementary and love making music, the After School

Chorus is the place for you! We will learn new songs and practice old ones while we polish our singing voices and experi-

ence what it is like to make music in a large group of motivated and excited students.

To participate, fill out the bottom of this sheet and bring it back to Mr. Glocke by May 7th. Let your parents keep the top

half for their records (dates, times etc.).

There will be no concert given at the end of our time together. We are just here to enjoy making music. Because of this,

students are not required to attend all three meetings. If a student can only come for one or two, we would still love to have

them!

Bridge Junior High School Music by Mr. Friend

Fifth grade students continue to work hard learning to play the recorder, which is similar to the

flute and in the woodwind family of instruments. They have been learning how to read music

since September and are excited to be able to apply what they have learned to an instrument.

Soon, students will be taking their recorders home to practice and learn new songs. Sixth

grade students love playing with ―Boomwhackers‖, which combine the fun of percussion with

learning music notes and Solfege, ―do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti‖. Seventh grade students continue to

work diligently applying music vocabulary in preparation for the Reach Performance Task,

and they love to sing especially when their favorite songs that they request are played, you

should hear their voices! Eighth grade and seventh grade both have learned about the music of

the 1960‘s including songs and performances from American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan

Show, and with summer just around the corner they particularly like the Surfin‘ Bird!

Welcome back to the Physical

Elem. For the month of May

we are starting to get back

into outdoor physical educa-

tion. Handball is the sport of

choice this month. Handball is

very similar to soccer but

instead students will be using

their hands to try to score

goals. We will be outside for

this unit as long as the weath-

er is dry and sunny! Along

with handball, we will be hav-

ing our annual Jumpathon.

Bridge teams up with the

American Heart Association

to help raise awareness of

heart disease here in America.

The whole fourth week of

May will be dedicated to jump

roping and fundraising for

people who suffer from heart

disease in America. This week

will not only be a good time,

but it will familiarize students

with the benefits of daily phys-

ical activity!

Banaszek‘s homerooms for

their effort during P.E. last

month. After the Tragedy at

the Boston Marathon earlier in

the month, these three class-

rooms completed a 1-Mile run

outside of Shabonna Park for

the people in the city of Bos-

ton. Due to weather con-

straints, other classrooms were

not given this opportunity as

we had to stay inside the

Gym. Go Bulldogs!

Physical Education at the Jun-

ior High during the month of

May will consist of many new

and exciting activities. The

big activity that will be taken

place this month is the ―Jump

Rope for Heart Week,‖ which

will be taken place May 27th-

31st. Bridge is working with

the American Heart Associa-

tion as students are trying to

raise awareness, and be more

educated on the importance of

exercising and having a

healthy heart. A long with

Heart Awareness Week, stu-

dents will be participating in

other activities such as Hand-

ball and Softball. With the

weather getting warmer, we

will try to utilize the great

outdoor space we have at the

Junior High. I would also like

to send a big applause to Mrs.

Magturo, Ms. Balice, and Mrs.

Art-i-facts (elementary)

Wow have we been busy in room 106! During the month of April, students

learned about things that move in our Gears, Machines and Robots unit. Kinder-

garten students created stamped Robot Portraits, by stamping shapes into paint

and using oil pastels and watercolors to create a layering effect. 1st and 2nd grade

students also created robot paintings, although they experimented with mixing

colors to create the perfect shade of ―metal‖. 3rd and 4th grade students are in the

midst of working together to create a Kinetic art installation. Students learned

and studied different types of gears, and then designed their own gear. Next we

will cut them out and turn them into a spinning 3D sculpture! During the month

of May, we will start learning about Texture. Kindergarten students will make

texture dragons, 1st and 2nd will make mixed media birds nests, and 3rd and 4th

grade students will be printing Greek vases and columns.

paper over their plate. Using our hands or

a wooden spoon, students gently rubbed

over the paper. After a minute, we lifted

the paper off of the plate.

Like magic, we now

have a beautiful copy

of our plate! The best

part about printing, is

that you can make lots

of copies! Nice work

Guinness World Record Attempt! Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade students participated in an

event collecting the World’s Largest Number of Environmen-tal Artworks. Ms. Chrisman and Ms. Balice took the artworks to the event on Sunday April 21st,

where more than 14,000 art-works were collected. The

Guinness World team is count-ing the artworks and will notify Chicago area schools if we all qualify! Several students art-

works may be showcased on an earth day calendar or website,

so check back soon to see if any Bridge students were selected!
