Hello Tau Sisters

We are in for a treat at the September meeting. Our hostesses from California plan a “No Sack Lunch,” and Paulette de-scribes it as “what you would expect in a sack lunch—without the sack!” So, be prepared for a treat—and dona-tions will be ac-cepted (to support the scholarship fund). Please bring items you would like to donate to the silent auction and books you to share at the book exchange. The program by Dr. Sara Bohn will focus on women’s health issues. Consider in-viting a guest to this special meeting.

Tau Chapter continues to consider membership as a top prior-ity, and we will revisit our Strategic Action Plan at the September meet-ing. The SAP should be a “work in progress,” so we will consider new goals for Tau Chapter. This is an ex-cellent time to submit a “recommendation for membership” for special key women educators you would like to nominate. As you will see in Tau Tales, it is time to recommit to Delta Kappa Gamma by paying dues. Please review the “dues re-minder” in Tau Tales and check out the benefits of membership.

Tau Teachers Care, a new ac-tivity for our Chapter to support first year teachers in our area, will be chaired by Sherri Carter. Please look for the suggestions in Tau Tales for

items to bring for the Teacher Bags we will prepare at the September meeting. Tau Chapter members made 10 contri-butions to BAG (Bring A Gift) to sup-

port Early-Career Edu-cators at SW Regional Conference. And please continue to report infor-mation to Betty illustrat-ing your support of the THAT (Teachers Help-ing Another Teacher) program. The next meeting for Tau members will be the Mid MO Council meet-ing scheduled for De-

cember 7 at Steinmen’s in Mexico. The meeting will start at 10:30 and cost $20. I will forward information includ-ing the address for Steinmen’s and deadline for reservations as soon as I receive it.

Delta State President Nadine Horner had accepted Tau Chapter’s invitation to attend the April 12 meet-ing in Eldon but has since discovered that she is expected to attend a another meeting on that date. She has asked Tau Chapter to consider rescheduling the April meeting. Another option is to invite her to attend a later Tau meet-ing. We will vote on this at the Sept. meeting. Please check your calendars to see if April 5 or April 26 will work—April 19 is during Easter week-end. With great respect for Tau Sis-ters returning to classrooms, I con-clude with these words from E.C. McKenzie:

“A teacher’s constant task is to take a roomful of live wires and see to it that they’re grounded.”

your volunteer hours and monetary

support for our SEE project.

Second Vice President’s Membership Report

Dear Tau Members,

Get ready for a busy and exciting meeting in California! In spite of our discussion at the July meeting, Paulette Fischer and her Committee are planning a "No Sack Luncheon" and a vital program on "Women's Health Issues" by Dr. Sara Bohn. Please observe the change in loca-tion. We will gather at the Annunciation Catholic Church at 414 Pat-rick Street.

Aside from our program and regular agenda, please take note to sup-port our other ongoing projects:

Bring items to our Silent Auction to raise funds for our

recruitment grants for HS Seniors

Share reading pleasure: bring books for our Book Exchange

Report any volunteer hours or monetary support for the THAT/SEE Program

Continue to support the Buddy Pack project

Take a minute to review our SAP (Strategic Action Plan) and see if we need to make any

revisions (Recall that we focused on membership--think about new members to strengthen

and enhance our chapter)

Share ideas for pertinent and interesting programs

We are a busy chapter and I want to commend each of you for your support and exemplary ef-forts. See you in California on September 14!

I thought you would like to know that Lela Zey has been residing at California Care Cen-ter for sev-eral months. I had such a nice visit with her recently. She is pretty frail, but still very sharp men-tally. She still has a stack of books by her chair, just like at her home. Though she can still walk, she prefers to use a wheelchair be-cause it's easier and quicker. At 95, she's still enjoying life. Nancy Lewis

I'm in my good stretch between chemo treat-ments, so this is my

productive time. Next chemo is 8/22, next Thursday, and I'll go

into about a 9 day slump, gradually down,

then back up. I'm learning the ropes. I'm having another mam-mogram this Thursday to measure the tumor --

hoping it is shrink-ing. But whatever it is

doing, the info will help them determine the

chemo cocktail for the 2nd 3 months of treat-

ments.

Nancy's been swamped and still has the books from the day of the last

meeting when I was pretty wiped out from the first chemo ses-

sion.

July 13, 2013 DKG Meeting The meeting was called to order by the president Arlene Broeker. The secre-tary did roll call. Cards will be sent to Paulette Fisher who is suffering from breast cancer and Rosalie Buehrle who has an ill husband. The minutes from the April 6 meeting were approved as written in the Tau Tales. A special thank you note was read from Leslie Barlow, one of the scholarship winners. The treasurer’s report was given and the 2013-14 budget was presented. Betty Mudd thanked the membership for the continued support of the THAT/SEE program. A review of committee goals was in Tau Tales, and Arlene thanked everyone for their continued efforts. The baskets our chap-ter put together were a huge success at the State Conference in Branson. Mrs. Broeker discussed new business including new membership require-ments, “employed in educational position or as a self-employed educator/retired educators from an education position.” TTC (Tau Teachers Care) will be a new program started by our chapter to recognize and hopefully encour-age new teachers to feel comfortable being a part of Tau chapter. Missy Martinette from the Lake of the Ozarks magazine Profile was the guest speaker (see page 9). She spoke of professional women in a business world. A thank you from the president was given to the hostesses and the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Julie Martin, Secretary

Southwest Regional Conference Branson

TAU TALES

Missouri Night at SW Regional Conference in Branson was very impressive. Betty and I enjoyed the experience of attending our first SW Regional Conference. The presentation of state banners was a most impressive ceremony—especially with the Delta State banner, Missouri, and United States flags. Delta State President Nadine Horner and Past President Beverly Teri issued the “Welcome to Missouri”. “Show Me Missouri” featured a tour of the state including the his-tory, heritage, music, dances and talents of Missouri artists. The

New Creole Jazz Band provided accompaniment for the tour. The Possum Holler Fiddlers (musicians between ages of 11 and 17) brought the music of the Ozarks alive. Visits from Mark Twain (Rick Giesen) and a surprise from Barney Fife added humor to the evening. Tau Chapter was rec-ognized as a Missouri Night Donor and Supporter. Arlene Broeker

Two Tau members are serving on Delta State Planning Committee: Judy Stanford on Achievement Awards and your president on Membership. The committee met to set goals for the biennium. Arlene Broeker

Everyone needs to be made special! Everyone needs a job! Don’t stay stagnant! We will have State Convention every other year: the NE area con-ference will be held in May 2014. The conference will have no busi-ness.

Angie wants every chapter to have a website. She asked that chapters get in touch with her. In late Sep-tember, Tau chapter will contact her for help.

Service Report

Buddy Pack Program

Thank you for your overwhelming response to our Service Project, the Buddy Pack Program! As a reminder, the following non-perishable food items are always needed for students in our communities:

In addition, children are always excited to get an unexpected treat in their packs, so you might consider Snack Pack pud-dings, individual snack cakes, granola bars, beef jerky, sea-sonal treats, etc. Just a reminder: many of our students may not have refrigeration at home or a stove with which to cook. Many of them do, however, have access to a microwave. Thank you for your continued support of this worthy project.

I am pleased to share that member Angie Wolfe and her husband, Todd, (also an educa-tor) welcomed their first child, a son named Zander, into the world on August 27. Angie and Todd met while teaching at School of the Osage and both currently work at the upper ele-mentary. Cards were sent this summer to Mary Ellen Laden congratu-lating her on retirement, and to

Paulette Fischer and Rosalie Buehrle to let them know we missed them at our meeting and were thinking of both. I received a wonderful thank you from Missy Martinette, our July guest speaker. Thrilled to have been invited to speak at our meeting, she was very impressed with our group and enjoyed making connections with the ladies at the luncheon. I loved the story Missy shared about the frog; frogs can only jump up and forward. I used that saying a lot this sum-mer and am using it these days at work. Many of us are moving up and forward with all of the changes with the

Common Core Standards. We shall "jump" to the challenge!

Connie Wyrick, raffle winner!

Missy Martinette began with “I get what you do!” She is an MU grad in fine arts/graphics/photography: plus she was a music teacher. Her key word was “passion.” She worked for others because she had passion. She spoke of her magazine LO Profile’s objective: tell a heart-warning story about people who actually lived in their posi-tions and got on the path to excellence. Her magazine high-lights charitable works which may give others insight and may create interest. On October 7 LO Profile will be seven year old: it promotes non-profit organizations. She looks for writers who have actually lived in her position. Her mantra is look forward positively: “If your ship doesn’t come in, you have to swim out to it.” Missy is a strong advocate for the Osage School District: “We have our own private (type) school here.”

Missy Martinette—owner, publisher, enthusiast of LO Profile—was the guest speaker.
