I pray we will support each other in compassion to provide strength for such a journey; and I pray that our efforts at building inclusive community will ever be oriented to the spiritual realm. There are many ways to acknowledge neighbors in unexpected places; we could easily reach out to address a wide range of issues: race, gender, sexual orientation, interfaith peace, generational differences, cultural and lifestyle issues, and more. And make no mistake, not every issue will be appropriate to our ministry expression. So we should not attempt to force any particular expression of such inclusive hospitality. We should pray, discern, talk together and, in this way, discern the expressions of outreach we are best suited to embrace. When all is said and done, this is no postscript to Waking the Wind I am writing. It is rather an invitation to join me in the courageous and ongoing attempt to recognize neighbor in all and sundry, the challenge Jesus has placed before us, and to discern the issues that we are best equipped – with Gods grace and goodness – to embrace.

Waking the Wind… a Postscript?

I will never forget sitting alone in our Jerusalem hotel, writing the concluding entry to the blog I had maintained throughout our sabbatical travels. When I keyed in the phrase, “This will probably be my last blog entry,” my heart sank. How could an experience so rich and fulfilling be over? It seemed to us, of course, that we had barely begun. I suppose this is the way of all meaningful experiences; but Christina and I have shaken our heads incredulously time and again at the thought that it is now behind us.

To be sure, the sabbatical journey – which I have honestly begun to call a spiritual pilgrimage – has concluded, but its impact on my life and ministry will be felt for years to come. I have been humbled, inspired, and challenged by men and women of exceptional courage and spiritual maturity that have dared spread their wings and wake the winds of peace in their lives, for that is where peace begins - and in the communities of which they are a part. Whatever they may call it, they have each discovered what Jesus meant by naming everyone neighbor; that is to say, recognizing the mark of God’s loving kindness on their spirit; and thus, reaching out to include them in a community of compassion. As I mentioned in my sermon on Sunday, I am convinced that it is in the lives of women and men that God’s presence abides among us.

Out of this inspiration and challenge comes a prayer, a fervent desire, for our faith community. I pray we will inspire each other to summon the courage of this type of spiritual hospitality.

It is rather an invitation to join me in the courageous and ongoing attempt to recognize neighbor in all and sundry, the challenge Jesus has placed before us, and to discern the issues that we are best equipped – with God’s grace and goodness – to embrace.

Stewardship Green Moment by Jody Cash

Green Moment for August

It is time for kids to go back to school. Parents spend a great deal of money on school supplies and clothes. Here are some ideas for "going green" and saving money.

1. Instead of buying everything new, look around your house for back packs, book bags, lunch boxes, pens, pencils, rulers, etc that can be used again. Why buy another ruler or pens and pencils if you already have them on hand?

2. For items that you must purchase, buy items that are made out of recycled materials. Did you know there are now biodegradable pencils, refillable pens, and recycled versions of both of these items? Be a savvy shopper.

3. For children kindergarten through 8th grade, paper is still used a lot. For children in 9-12th grades, computers are often used and very little paper is needed. Do not purchase large supplies of paper if the child will be using a computer. You can purchase recycled paper for printers (such as New Leaf Paper) and Mead Recycled Notebooks for writing paper.

4. If you need to purchase text books, you can purchase used books or rent books. If you can, team up with another family—you may have books they need and they may have books you need and you can swap books.

5. Use book covers to keep the books in good condition. You can use recycled items to make the book covers—i.e. old paper bags, jeans, t-shirts, etc., and you can even decorate them if you wish.

6. Pack a waste-free lunch—do not use plastic or foil. Some lunch boxes come with containers that can be reused or you may have some containers at home. Send things in the lunch such as fruits and vegetables instead of chips and brownies!

7. If you pack a beverage with the lunch, send it in a reusable bottle. 8. Encourage schools to teach about recycling—starting in grade school. The more the children learn

about recycling and why we should recycle will encourage them to go green. 9. Encourage children to walk or ride bikes to school instead of going to school in a car or on the bus

—this will help the environment. 10. Encourage schools to have recycling areas to encourage the students to "go green".

Sowing Seeds for the Future

Everyone who pledged to Sowing Seeds and/or the "Seat" purchases should have received a letter plus giving status. If you have any error on either of your giving statements, please contact Michelle Reiter for correction. Only Michelle and Chuck Warner have access to the details of your giving. Our 3-year commitment is officially over but we are still receiving funds…please keep the donations coming. Here is where we stand to-date: a. OPCC reached 93.9% of our goal

- this is good news as it is quite common for 3-year campaigns to fall short by 10-12% b. leaves a balance of $30,625 yet to be received

- this short fall means that OPCC will need to include Laura's salary within the budget 1 year earlier than planned!! - based on deaths, people moving, and change in giving capabilities, we estimate that $22,000 will not be fulfilled.

Also, our pledges for seats (chairs/pews), which was in addition to campaign commitment, will cover the cost of 267 of the 343 seats. Still have only $1,004 to be fulfilled on these pledges. Again, we will continue to accept your donations at any time. If you haven't contributed toward the seats and would like to do so, please do as we have not made the plaque yet listing all the donors along with their wishes of "in memory of" or "in honor of".

Property Commission

Activities since last Scene: a. Carpets have been cleaned in classrooms 40, 41, & 42 and in the Great Hall plus spot

cleaning at North entrance, entrance to Fireside room and front hallway at a total cost of $558. b. had two different air handler condensation drainlines plug up and caused water overflow onto

two ceilings which eventually fell through…yes, this did cause quite a mess in the West hallway and in the bathroom of the Bride's Room. Thank goodness nobody was around so no injuries…PRAISE GOD. Our current costs to fix is approximately $400 but still need to purchase ceiling tiles and a new light fixture!!

c. Prayer Chapel (Bo's old office); - the carpeting will be going in during the time you read this article…HURRAY! - with some final touches, should be completed within the next 2-3 weeks. - our commission can not thank enough all the contributors and memorial funds put toward this project. THANK YOU, may God bless each of you.

Thank You

Dear Congregation of OPCC, The family of Lloyd “Larry” Lavely wants to thank you for the support and loving prayers the last three years. You are a wonderful church family. The Body of Christ. God bless and keep you. To Congregational Care Ministry: The Family of Freda Louise White acknowledges with deep appreciation, your kind expression of sympathy. And a special thank you to the Luncheon ladies!

Linda & Darrell White (Freda’s son and his wife) To OPCC: My sister Joey Rayburn Thomas and I wish to thank OPCC members for the outreach extended to our mother, Mary Stewart Rayburn. Ed Hitzelberger visited Mom faithfully from 2008 until sidelined in 2014. The Congregational Care Team, Deacons, and Pastor Laura Phillips visited, brought communion, offered prayers, and talked with her. Mom enjoyed each visit.

On the day of Mom’s memorial service, June 17, Sharon McBride and Theresa Krebs did more than occupy the house for safety. They put out the food for the post funeral reception and helped set up as we returned from Antioch Cemetery. The altar flowers on Sunday the 21st were perfect. Mom’s favorite flower was the rose and mine is the sunflower, both were represented in the display.

We have never been more proud of belonging to OPCC and more comforted during this period and when Dad passed away in July 2008.

In Peace, Ella Rayburn, Scranton, Pa

Thank you so much for the prayers, visits, communion and phone calls of support during my recent surgery and rehab stay! I appreciate each and every one of you and your commitment to God and to this community!

Bless you all, Ann Sandler Thanks for prayers on behalf of my Aunt, Janette Phelps, who passed away on Wednesday, July 29th. Our large family will miss her.
