To the men at Tau' Eps i lon Phi for donati ngthe pr?ceeds from their 1987 Charity ArmWrestllng Tournament. Thanks for caring!

Judy asks if any of you with unused doghouses would like to donate them. She'd behappy to have them. When she finds an ownerwho genuinely wants to improve the care ofthe family pet but is unable to provide thenecessary materials to do so, she'd like toprovide a doghouse. So, if you have oney?u'd like to recycle for a truly good cause, glve us a call. And if you've got a littleextra time this winter and are handy withwood, she could put you to work repairingthem before delivery. She'll provide the~ood and even find you a warm place to work,lf you need it. Doghouses are simple thingsthat could provid~ a little comfort for someunlu ky dogs this winter. Can any of youhe1 .

Wintry winds and frozen water bowls. Subzero wind chill and no shelter. Blizzardsand frozen paws. It's that time of year again. It's time for IIOh, we've always had outsidedogs. He doesn't mind the cold." Or "I'mtrying to housebreak him ll (by chaining apuppy to a fence for hours on end?). CCHSCruelty Investigator Judy Warmbier is busythese days - persuading, educating, .enforcing - doing what she can to ease thesituation for the animals unfortunate enoughto be in the hands of thoughtless oruninformed owners. Judy reports that frequently the owners involved will h~ve madean attempt at providing shelter for thesedogs - often inadequate. A decent doghousehas four intact walls, a solid roof, and iselevated off the ground. Responsible wintercare means adequate nutrition: water todrink and extra food; a tether long enoughto reach shelter; and a decent shelter. There are a lot of pet owners~out there whoneed to be informed of this ~- again and .again!' Designing theHumane Center SitePart 2 - Transitions(continued from the last issue of Pawprints)

Control of water and drainage on a site isextremely important for any site design. Theplanned embankments around the building foradded insulation will become near desertconditions for plants growing on the upperedges of the soil. This normally dampprairie soil, under the protected eaves ofthe building will have very little rain fallon it. About 100 feet away, however~ betweenthe access drive and the parking lot, is astormwater retention area to help drainagewater recharge the aquifer. The plantselection for the variation in soil moisturesis based on ecologically stable prairieconditions found in some rare areas aroundIllinois. The control of transitions, inthis case from dry to moist soils, is belowthe soil and yet very clearly effects what wesee above it.

The selection of shrubs and prairie plants, much like the hedgerow trees at the entry, are based on more than ecological or functionalrequirements. The design carries with it arecognition that early settlers in East CentralIllinois brought cultural and traditionalplanting ideas with them when they settledthis agricultural landscape. Many remainingolder farmhouses and remnant foundationplantings have an evergreen planted on eitherside of the entry. These trees were plantedas symbols of an evergrowing faith in thehousehold. As an abstraction of this traditional symmetrical planting, the entirefoundation at the Humane Center is surroundedby a variety of evergreen shrubs. So too,

mim~c~ing the plant succession in the unburnedpralrle, the afforested fields and the HumaneCente~ have red cedars (or their cousins) asthe flrst evergreens. .

Wh~~ deciding upon the actual plants for° the slte, we considered other factors beyondt~ose.mentioned--such as food and cover forwlld11fe, fragrance, and seasonal interestto ~a~e a few: In combining hedgerow form~,pralrle p1antlngs and functional aspects ofthe Humane Ce~ter, the final plan promises tobe both functlonal and appealing in allseasons.

Remembering Loved Ones thisValentine's Day throughYour "Special Thoughts"

We apologize for the small size of typenecessary to include all our wonderful friendswho made gifts in memory or in honor of petsand people this month. As you can see, our·members place a high value on rememberingtheir loved ones, and often do so in creativeways. People often prefer making a memorialcontribution to sending flowers, and onemember recently donated 100 lbs. of pet foodin- memory of the family pet.

Another shining example of creative generosity belongs to CaroZ & OWen Fabert, whorecently requested that their wedding guestsmake a contribution to their church or theCCHS instead of buying a gift. Many, manypeople did so, and we thank Carol and Owenfor their thoughtfulness and wish them along and happy marriage!

Included below is a coupon for your usein remembering or honoring that specialperson or pet this Valentine's Day, with asmall contribution to the CCHS.

Enclosed please find my special Valentine contribution given in memory/ honor of:

- Good news! This time we're not asking forpet food! Thanks to you, Qur-Holiday PetFood Drive brought in enough munchies tolast for quite awhile. But keep watchingthis space. Come June or so, we'll be outof puppy chow for sure. Those little guyscan sure put it away.

Free Advice

Crating is a training method which hasincreased iD popularity in recent years andfor good reason. The use of a crate or cagewill aid in the process of housebreaking, eliminating destructive behavior, and easingan animal's adjustment to a new environment.

Crate training takes advantage of thedenning instinct of canines and provides anarea where the dog feels secure. In general, dogs do not like to soil their own dens andwill attempt'to wait until they can leavetheir crates to void. Crate training cannot be utilized as an alternative to traditional training methods, but it can speedthe process and lessen the headaches for theo\'Jner.

The Humane Society has an-excellent pamphlet explaining the proper way to cratetrain an animal and also when not to use acrate. We urge anyone who has--a--new dog tostop by and find Qut more about this methodbefore training begins.

And for those of you who wish to receivethe free pamphlet entitled "A Pet Owner'sGuide to th'e Dog Crate,1I please send 'a self-,addressed, stamped, legal-sized envelope tothe CCHS Business Office at 113 N. Race St.,Urbana, IL 61801.

- Gaines labels. Remember to save the "starl~

marke~s, front panel of Cycle labels andTastee Chunks seals for cash rebate for theShelter.

- Doghouses. If you've got one you'd liketo recycle, we could use it. See theCruelty Report to find out why.

- With a new .shelter and a tight budget thisyear, our staff has to be especially careful to cut corners whenever paws-ible ..Your donations of smaller items such asthose listed below (and many others) would'be appreciatea and, in the long run, saveus money which could be used in other ways.
