Volume 10 Issue 2 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Craig L. Oldham, D.M.D. We should all be proud of our Hillsborough County Dental Association. Every week we support our communities as dentists and volunteers to improve the oral health of our neighbors. We work to make a healthy and strong community. HCDA members engage in the election season with donations, hosting and grassroots activism. We are represented completely in Tallahassee in legislature and during Dentists’ Day on the Hill (April 3, 2013). These activities protect our business and professional interests. The most recent example of HCDA support for our community is the membership approved funding to help the school-based sealant program. Although it is only 1% of the HCDA budget, this money will assist in the success of this pilot program. A few counties in Florida maintain school sealant programs. Many states support these programs also. So there is a proven model and ongoing funding to provide this preventive treatment. The Hillsborough County School Board is restarting this project with a pilot program in eight public schools. The two federally qualified health clinics in Hillsborough County will provide the dentists and staff to deliver the care. MORE HEALTH, Inc. will provide education and administration to influence behavior modification for these children. The HCDA is providing money to purchase reading material and educational guides for these second graders. Our financial support allows these three non-profit organizations to succeed in implementing this pilot program. The HCDA continues to fulfill our mission of improving oral health in our community. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Craig L.

Thanks for being a part of the solution.

1. A reminder, the Brandon Outreach Dental Clinic construction is moving along with a goal to open sometime in January, 2013. HCDA President, Dr. Craig Oldham, is working closely with the clinic and is asking members to consider donating to this endeavor. Please review the list to the right and bring your instruments to the HCDA November meeting. Contact Dr. Oldham with any questions, (813) 665-0809 or [email protected]. 2. The HCDA website underwent some renovations this past summer and a new feature will soon be added on the public side: Links to members' office websites! If you have a website you want listed please forward the information to: [email protected]. The offices will be listed in zip code order. Also, please indicate if your practice is a specialty so this information may be included in the listing. Don't forget to try the new RSVP mechanism located on the HCDA website homepage: www.hcdafla.com. 3. The 2012-2013 HCDA Membership Dues are now due. Third notices have been mailed and the next notice will be a "drop" letter. If you are unsure whether you have paid your dues, contact the HCDA office. 4.

5. In June 2012, the Florida Dental Association's House of Delegates voted to adopt a new plan designed to effectively compete with PPOs. Approved was the re-branding of "Direct Reimbursement" or "Direct Assignment" to the Dental Savings Account (DSA). The DSA is a dollar-based group dental plan with a fixed fee schedule to dramatically ease administration for dental office staff and help employers and covered individuals manage rising healthcare costs. If you are interested in learning more about the DSA and how to join the "Preferred Dentist" Network, contact Argus Provider Relations at (877) 864-0625, Ext. 5.

September Meeting Recap Minutes from the meeting are located at: www.hcdafla.com

Welcome new HCDA Members: Drs. Michael Mason, James R. Green IV, Cynthia Chacko, Todd Britten, Nishith Patel, Jessica Kroll and Bijal Joshi.

Dr. Leo Cullinan, President of the West Coast District Dental Association, spoke on access to care issues and showed a video of a volunteer clinic in Collier County. He has commissioned a committee at the WCDDA level to study access to care issues and concerns.

Mr. Harry Gross, Executive Director, Gulf Coast Dental Outreach Clinic, encouraged members to volunteer at the clinic and asked that they consider participating in their upcoming golf tournament.

Dr. Craig Oldham announced that the HCDA had received a grant for $2,500.00 from the Florida Dental Health Foundation, Project: Dentists Care. It will be used for the 2013 HCDA Give Kids a Smile® Event. He also said the Brandon Outreach Dental Clinic is progressing and asked members to please donate dental supplies and instruments. Donations can be dropped off at his office.

Dr. Nick Kavouklis with Argus Dental Plan, gave an overview of the FDA’s Dental Savings Account (DSA). DSA is a dollar-based group dental plan with a fixed fee schedule to dramatically ease administration for dental office staff and help employers and covered individuals manage rising health costs.

Dr. Terry Buckenheimer explained that the Hillsborough County School Board has approved a pilot program for eight schools to examine and apply sealants for second graders. Federally qualified health centers will provide the dentists and staff. Members present approved funding ($600.00) to provide literature for children and parents to assist in making them dentally aware.

14 RSVPs no-showed, there were 3 walk-ins. The HCDA paid for 11 meals totaling: $330.00.
