My wife Brenda and I are a couple of Canadianslooking for a warm place to ride and new vista's toenjoy so we headed south from a little place calledDogpound, Alberta and ended up riding the backcountry of Arizona in the winters and wandering backand forth between our winter range in ThunderbirdFarms near Maricopa and the northern ranges ofAlberta's west country in the summer. Along with ourhorses Blue, Wink, and Willow, we'll try to show youa world that is hidden from most folks and best seenthrough the ears of your horse, apologies to my muleriding friends. .

Our first time down these trails was just under a yearago, and boy-oh boy, was it great to be back lastMarch. Last year in the Chiricahuas was Blue`s firstmountain technical trip and he really didn't have thefootwork down pat yet, so I was pretty alert to hismovements all the way around the circuit. This yearhe is a new horse and he watches the trail and dealswith the footing and I am free to gawk around at thescenery. And trust me there is a lot of gawking to bedone on these trails. The photo below is headingalong the creek into the Chiricahua NationalMonument and you can see Wink is a little cavalierwith Brenda`s bad knee. .

This was also Wink`s first trip through here but forthe most part she handled everything like shealways does, just like she has been there a thou-sand times. .

The national monument was created in 1924 byCalvin Coolidge with a Presidential Proclamationand I for one thank Calvin for his foresight. It is awonderful place and many of the improvementswere done by Civilian Conservation Corps enrolleesof NM-2-A, Company 828, who were stationed atChiricahua National Monument from 1934-1940.The men improved the scenic drive, created the hik-ing/riding trails, and built most of the structures inuse today. .

Many, but not all, of the trails in the park allow horse-back riders, although there are a few guidelines thatmust be followed. They only allow twenty horses touse the park each day and they would like that to bebroken down further so that less than 10 head tra-verse a trail at one time. We numbered 19 riders sowe headed in as two groups with about an hour ofseparation between the two bands. .

This is the canyon we have just come up towards thevalley floor south of Wilcox, Arizona. .

This is a truly spectacular trail which is or should beon every trail riders bucket list, and Brenda and I arehoping to keep checking it off for years to come. I amsure each time you make the journey you find anoth-er great vista or neat spot along the way. .

Here, Blue is looking over the edge of the UpperRhyolite Canyon Trail and probably thinking this is aplace where we need to watch our step or we willjoin the angels as I don't have the wings of Pegasusto carry us on down there. Although the officialnames of the trails some of the photos were taken onwere Lower/Upper Rhyolite Canyon and EchoCanyon, we just call it the Escalator, as it is a series

of stonesteps cutout of thec a n y o nwall andyou justgo upand upand up.Y o uneed as o l i dh o r s e

with a good mind under you on these trails as thereare sections that are quite technical and a steadytrail partner is a must. .

There are hundreds of steps and miles of ledges cutout of solid rock by the above mentioned CCC, aswell as natural slot type canyons between the pinna-cles of rock that have been carved out by the windand water over the eons. .Because of thelong haul down here from the Phoenix area, wedecided as a group that we should travel down onFriday, ride the Chiricahua National Monument onSaturday, and then ride up the Pinery Canyo to Iron

Springs onSunday. Althoughthis ride had ahard act to follow,it was a nice littlejaunt just to workthe kinks outfrom the daybefore. ..

We did a little rid-ing and a littlerelaxing, so thatwe were readyfor a campfire inthe evening. .

That fire, and the company of all of our friends, suremanaged to keep things warm that weekend

If you are thinking of visiting the Chiricahua NationalMonument, with or without your equine partner, it islocated 120 miles southeast of Tucson. Take I-10east from Tucson to the first exit for Willcox. Travel 3miles into town to the stoplight and turn right. You willfollow Arizona State Highway 186 for 32 miles to thejunction of Arizona State Highway 181. Turn left and4 miles later you will be at the Chiricahua entrancestation. For more information or maps of the trailsvisit this website: . .http://www.nps.gov/chir/index.htm .

Now get out there and ride those trails and we will belooking forward to crossing paths with you in thebackcountry. .

Despite the warm temperatures, it was a greatturnout. Organization was the key as 2 penswere utilized to keep a steady flow of competi-tion, and the fresh cattle provided every contest-ant with a chance to put down a great time.

ByJayeAnders-Kukowski .

He is named after a candy bar, one that is sup-posed to give you lots of energy. Once you arearound him, you’ll agree that he is aptly named.

Snickers is a 19 year old Quarter Horse with theregistered name of Poker Socks. But everyoneknows him as Snickers. He is a part of the‘Garner family’ in Maricopa. They purchasedhim from their horseshoer, Roy Kading. Hewas born and raised right in the same area.Described as a “stinker” for his ability to openor unlatch any gate, Snickers is a focused ath-lete. He never wants to walk if there’s room torun. .

He is a one horse jack-of-all-trades, as theentire family has ridden and competed on him.Snickers has excelled in the arena at Roping,Barrels, Poles Obstacle Challenges and hasmade many a mile on the trail. He won grand-daughter Cassidy, her very first ribbon, daugh-ter-in-law Shiloh Garner her first buckle andwas at the pay window at many ropings forCliff Garner. .

But recently, the Garners asked Snickers to takeup yet another skill. They became interested inMounted Shooting and Snickers was to be

Shiloh’s mount. As usual, he took it all instride, a BIG stride. He vaulted Shiloh to thetop of her bracket and was the driving force inher national standings in the rookie categoryof the Cowboy Mounted ShootingAssociation. No small feat indeed.

Cliff Garner was com-peting on his horseFreckles who was alsoCassidy’s mount in theWranglers competi-tion. The family wereattending a match inDragoon, AZ whenFreckles began tocolic. The conditionwas so severe that

Freckles wasunable to pullthrough. .

Devastated, the entire family mournedthe loss of Freckles, especiallyCassidy. But, determination and theknowledge that another good horsewas still in the barn, led the trio tomake the decision to continue withcompetition as planned. They hadentered all three riders in a big matchin Las Vegas. .

It was hard to fathom that at 19 yearsold, Snickers could carry 3 riders inthe same competition. Each riderwould compete at least 4 times. That’sat least 12 runs. But, no one toldSnickers that he couldn’t do just that.

Snickers has heart, and a genuine will to giveit everything he has. And that’s just what hedid, carrying Shiloh Garner to a win in herdivision and Cassidy to 2nd place in hers. After noticing that Snickers was a little sore,Cliff pulled out of the competition to allowthe ‘girls’ to have a best chance possible. But, he was in the arena every time, coaching

and encouraging as his horse ran hisheart out. .

“We are so very lucky to have him inour lives. He’s brought a lot of joy toall 3 of us,” said Shiloh. “Age doesn’tstand in his way”. .

That’s the Heart of a Horse.

APHA registered buckskin/bay paint mare. She is a very versatile prospect for almost any discipline you might want to do. Shehas been started on barrels and poles, and is going to be awesome! But has not beenpushed yet. We have been working on a good solid pattern with flying lead changes, etc. She doesn’t get hot/easily rattled when you work her. Lottie stays quiet and sane.

I have hauled her to various events and even camping up North, with no issues. She hasbeen on rough terrain, mountains, rocky trails, and unfamiliar surroundings, and handles

them all with no problems.I took her to a local Trail Horse Challenge and placed 2nd in the open class, with nopractice. We did 13 obstacles, including opening 2 gates, side passing, jumping, and

even backing up a bridge. Loads, ties, clips, shoes with no issues. 100% Sound!Although I do not recommend her for a total beginner rider, she will be awesome with

an advanced rider or a teenager with ambition and some riding ability to put thefinishing touches on her in the discipline of their choosing.
