Well fall is definitely here and in the air. There are fall festivals going on everywhere, the leaves are changing colors, and I can actually sit outside at night. I love fall!!!!
I took at trip that started on the 20th of
September and ended the 30th. I drove to
Michigan alone for a cousins wedding. The
whole drive up was a testament to the
season. I know that the leaves in Virginia
sometimes take longer to change, but
driving through different states let me know
fall was here.
As I exited Virginia and drove through
Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and then a

good portion of Michigan, the leaves
started changing at a good pace. With
each state the color was more varied
and vibrant. When I arrived at the ranch
the wedding was being held at, there
were fire reds, vibrant yellows and
electric oranges. Some trees had all
three and looked like they were ablaze
when the wind would hit them.
The ride home was not as vibrant, as I
was watching the colors change from fall
brilliance to green leaves that haven’t
yet changed. I know they will soon
though, and Virginia will be lit up for fall.
The presidential election is quickly coming up. The candidates are fired up and trying to get us to vote for them. I still don’t know who I support and I know others feel the same. Every election year brings new anxiety to voters. “Who shall we choose?” What makes this one better than that one?” and other questions come up as we look to make our decisions. This election, however, seems to be more important than any other. There are even more facts and information that directly affect the military and the American people. I will not tell anyone who to vote for, but I will tell you that you need to make an informed decision and you need to vote. If you need information on how to vote please see 2LT Joshua Broughton. 2LT Joshua Broughton is the "Voting Officer" for the 97th. This is another "additional duty" placed on the younger/newer officers. He is responsible for guiding any Soldier who may have questions concerning voting, such as absentee voting, how do I vote in South Dakota when I'm stationed in Virginia, etc. This is a simple explanation. If you would like a more in depth explanation just ask.
2012 Presidential Election
I was born in Franklin, NH on April 21st,1989. I was raised by my father William, a pastor and teacher, and my mother Susan, a nurse. I grew up with three older brothers; Aaron, is a System Designer at the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms with a family in Fairfax, VA; Adam, is a Physician's Assistant at Holy Family Hospital with a family in Ipswich, MA; Abel just recently finished a year of missionary work in Palestine and is currently a bank teller at TD Bank.
I joined the Army in 2007 with a four year ROTC scholarship. I graduated from Gordon College in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and commissioned from MIT as a Transportation Corps Officer. Six months prior to graduating I married a beautiful New Hampshire girl, Alyssa, and we are now expecting a baby girl in December.
I am the platoon leader of second platoon, which includes the LCU 2011, 2017, and 2023. I also serve most notably as the Company's Family Readiness Group Liaison, Crime Prevention Officer, Voting Representative, and Tax Assistant. I have had the great opportunity to lead a number of Battalion ranges and events. I have also been given the chance to get underway for numerous missions. My favorite part about being assigned to 97th is working with the leaders. The NCOs and Warrant Officers have taught me an incredible amount about Army Watercraft. I experienced some of the stereotypical growing pains, but thanks to those mentioned those pains were turned into lessons and I have been set up for success. Lieutenants like me will come and go, but I hope that the true Soldiers who remain build upon the foundation that has been set and take pride in the heritage of 97th.

"Hello Everyone! It has
been a very busy summer
for us all, so as we
transition into the Fall
and the Holiday Season
we expect to have more
FRG events and activities,
and of course to get our
Soldiers some good
quality time with their
families. It has been great
having our FRG volunteers
and Soldiers get more and
more interested in the
Company programs and I
truly appreciate the
support.
In September we have
some great fundraising
events and activities
planned, to include a
Company Car Wash on
14SEP12 and a Company
Organizational Day on
21SEP12. We will have a
silent auction with some
really great items that
have been graciously
donated by friends and
family members.
It truly is a great time for
the families of 97th Trans
and I hope you all get
involved as much as you
can with making our FRG
program a great success!

Come out to Murphy field for a Fall Festival
of fun.
Dates and Times: October 19th from 4:00 to 9:00
October 20th from 11:00 to 6:00
10th BATTALION FALL FESTIVAL will be held on Saturday, October 27th. Proceed with caution as you discover the Dark Side of 97th Transportation. Evil has taken over our LCU boat. Take a tour, if you dare, but we warn you, your darkest fears will come alive! (PG-PG13 rated) And all is not as quiet as it appears on the small tug – spirits of the dead have made this boat their home. Your darkest phobias and fears will appear around every corner of this boat – are you brave enough to face them? (R rated). The 3rd Port Day Room is our safe house for those needing a break. There will be refreshments, activities for the kids and a silent auction for the adults. Themed baskets, gift certificates to local restaurants and a certificate for two nights at the Newport News Marriott are just some of the items featured in this silent auction. Not sure what a silent auction is and why we’re doing this? A silent auction is a way of bidding on an item by writing your name and dollar amount that you wish to pay for a particular item and the highest bidder at the end of the festival will purchase that item for the bid they offered. All proceeds will be given to our FRG fund for future activities. The 10th Battalion Fall Festival is tentatively set to start at 11:00 and end at 16:00. Mark your calendar today!
