Can you remember the exact moment you knew you wanted to make an impact on the world? Your dream was not to become rich or famous but to help inspire others to reach their greatness. What a huge concept for you as a child sitting in a classroom feeling inspired by that one teacher who made you say when I grow up I want to be just like Ms. Lewis.

At an impressionable age, becoming a teacher seems like one of the coolest jobs around, reasonable hours, paid vacations, not to mention summers off. Sounds like the good life receiving these kinds of perks, but your reason to becoming a teacher was because you get fulfillment in helping others. Remember your first year as a teacher and how exciting it was to get your own class. You couldn’t wait to decorate your classroom, see those smiling faces and begin your first lesson on classroom expectations.

A couple of years later, most teachers have gotten into the swing of things. You see your students and want the best for them. You dedicate longer nights working on lesson plans and differentiating instructional activities to ensure the academic success of each individual. Not to mention the hours spent in after school meetings analyzing data because everyone from administration to support staff share one common goal: to reflect on teaching practices and devise strategies to improve student achievement.

Teaching has always been a profession to affect the future. The knowledge that you give to students day-to-day come with a huge responsibility. Not everyone can handle the challenges of shaping young minds, but you can. As a leader, your students are looking up to you as their role model. Some of them are even thinking one day to walk in your footsteps. The difference you are making in their lives lead toward a positive outcome, even their parents take notice of the profound impact you are having on their child. Being an educator also improves your patience, compassion and strength. You recognize some students need a little extra love. This may require you to take off the instructor’s hat and take on other roles like a counselor, friend or a confidant. When this occurs, you begin to build trusting relationships. This matters because it shows you are generally concerned with everything that is happening in your students’ lives. You connect with them on a deeper level as you get to know the person inside and out.

You may not realize the significance of showing these kinds of attributes years down the road; but oftentimes, a student you had in class will reflect back in their adult life and crack a smile reminiscing on the days you were kind and there for them. Etched in their memory will be how you treated them fairly with respect to their individual differences.

If you and your family are looking for a weekend getaway or a day trip with an overnight stay, you may want to consider the Poconos for their indoor water parks. The famous Great Wolf Lodge opened in 2005 and boasts an awesome indoor waterpark with rides and slides for the whole family, cabin-style hotel rooms and restaurants.

Your kids will be wowed exploring the magical realm of MagiQuest, a live-action adventure game that’s sure to entertain their whimsical imaginations. Great Wolfe also offers glow-in-the-dark mini golf, multiple interactive and arcade games, a mini bowling alley, a spa for your darling princesses and much more.

In addition to Great Wolfe Lodge, Camelback Mountain has an array of activities, mostly outdoor which include skiing, snow tubing, and mountain adventures i.e. aerial obstacles, zip lines, Segway tours and even a mountain roller coaster. Camelback also offers an outdoor waterpark called Camelbeach, which offers over 37 different rides, slides and attractions with private cabanas.

A Message from the EditorOn behalf of my husband, Robert and I, we would like to welcome you to the first edition of Garden State Safe Kids. We were inspired to create this pub-lication to serve as an informational resource to share with parents and

teachers throughout northern New Jersey.

Our primary focus is to bring to you a quarterly newsletter that will be distributed to pre-schools, day care centers, catholic and elementary schools during the school year. The newsletter will contain interesting reads from police and fire safety, recipes, vacation ideas, family fun activities, a cover story and much more.

As proud parents we understand the importance of keeping our children safe. We would love to introduce to you a program that has been around for over 30 years. The McGruff® Safe Kids Total Identification System is the most leading, comprehensive, child safety educational program available today, which provides a valuable service to parents’

nationwide.

Licensed by the National Crime Prevention Council, The McGruff® Safe Kids TID gives parents the opportunity to purchase identification cards for a minimal fee, which includes a digital photograph of your child, all ten digital fingerprints and your child’s basic pedigree information. Happy Holiday

(Continued from cover) Even still, the hard work you bring to your classroom sometimes will go unnoticed even though you secretly want an apple on your desk. Yet, no one really knows how much time you spend perfecting your skills apart from the workplace. Your mission is to prepare students for the best possible future, and you’ll do whatever it takes to keep them from slipping through the cracks. The cracks of life can have a detrimental effect on a student, especially when he or she believes that their destiny is far less than greatness.

As an educator, you see firsthand what struggles each student face through the learning process. However, you go the extra mile and commit yourself to the success of the student. Those “aha” moments give you a victory dance when he or she finally gets it proving that you are a highly qualified teacher. You celebrate and rejoice with positive affirmations like “I knew you could do it” or “You can do anything you put your mind to.” This scenario is what a student will remember most when he or she comes to a stumbling block in their education; you were their greatest cheerleader who believed in them.

A principal used to tell his students to do the right thing even when no one was looking. The teacher took that same advice and

applied it to her own life. This touching story happened to an educator who went beyond the normal school hours to help struggling students after school. After spending more than half a year consistently working with these students, the principal took notice and invited her to a luncheon for teachers. At the event, a speaker stood up and began giving a speech on the qualities of a good teacher. She applauded as the speaker announced the recipient of the Teacher of the Year award. Her named was called, and she was greeted with a standing ovation. Shocked, she went up to the podium to receive her award along with a one thousand dollar check for her outstanding efforts.

Feel-good stories like these happen but not to every teacher who makes this their career. What person doesn’t want to receive acknowledgement for all they do, especially when their profession requires teachers to do everything possible to equip students with the knowledge to compete in a global society. If there’s one thing you should always ask yourself when you are feeling discouraged is who am I here for. This is the time self-examination is required.

The reasons to why you became a teacher is more powerful than any other profession on earth. You are responsible for cultivating

a generation of learners who are governing and re-inventing the world. You empower dream chasers to visualize their future career goals and believe they are actually attainable with determination and hard work. You foster creative minds to be productive in their communities and make a difference in the world. You help students who feel their lives are hopeless and give them a new direction. You develop character and instill morals that many students will carry for the rest of their lives. More importantly, the greatest gifts you can give to a student is believing, inspiring, encouraging, motivating and uplifting them, so they may one day say I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for you being my teacher.

It’s nice to want to receive praise and feel appreciated for all you do, but there might never come a thank-you or a job well done. Will you be satisfied if no one pats you on the back? Yes, you feel overworked and underpaid at times, but considering all this, teaching is not a profession for those who are looking for wealth. The only wealth that comes out of your effort is enriching students by exposing them to a world full of knowledge and endless possibilities, and that my good friend is priceless.

SHIH TZUOriginated in China, the Shih tzu is a toy breed that is gentle, outgoing, playful, alert and loyal. Their coats are gold, dark/light brown, white, black, black/white, grey, brindle red and even a shade of blue. The word Shih tzu means “lion” and although the dog is playful and sweet, they are not afraid to stand up for themselves. Shih tzu’s are officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. These dogs require minimal exercise; however, their long luxurious coat needs daily brushing and maintenance.

SIBERIAN HUSKYOriginated in North Eastern Siberia the Husky is a medium to large breed and belongs to the Spitz genetic family. Huskies are friendly, gentle, intelligent and athletic and with wolf like appearance, piercing blue or multi-colored eyes makes them a household choice for some. This breed was first developed as sled dogs with some still being used in this capacity. Huskies colors vary from black to white along with a brown/red color. Although these dogs may be a household choice, keep in mind that they can be difficult to train, with a reputation for being escape artists. So if you have a Husky or are looking to add one to your family be sure that your property is escape proof because these dogs will find a way to wander.

DALMATIANOriginated in the historical region of Dalmatia in Croatia, Dalmatian’s are active, alert, intelligent, and fast and possess great endurance. They are the only spotted breed and are noted for their black or liver/brown spotted coats. The Dalmatian was used as a carriage dog in the past, and was also used in other capacities such as a hunter, a circus dog and everyone’s favorite a firehouse dog. The Dalmatian is a great companion, but need good training early in life because with their high energy level they can become exhausting to live with if not properly trained.

GOLDEN RETRIEVEROriginated from Scotland, this large breed is amongst one of the friendliest breeds of dogs. With their great temperament, they are reliable, trustworthy, kind and intelligent. These beautiful dogs vary in any shades of gold, cream and beige colors. The name comes from when these dogs were gun dogs that retrieved shot waterfowl such as ducks and game birds during hunting. Retrievers like to play, swim, relax and are quite easy to train.

BEAGLEOriginated from Great Britan, the Beagle is a small to medium size breed and a member of the hound group. These dogs are gentle, even tempered, excitable and determined. They’re usually tri-colored or white in combination with black and tan, brown, or brown/tan. Beagles are scent hounds; they were developed primarily for tracking small game such as rabbit and deer. All in all they are great sized, easy to groom and are peaceful with other pets.

We’re in Flu season, and Flu shots are highly recommended. After receiving the flu vaccine, the body needs two full weeks to develop antibodies to fight the flu.

Obesity With obesity on the rise, parents should monitor what their children eat on a daily basis and make it a point that their children stay active for approximately 1 hour a day. This will not only help manage your child’s weight; but more importantly, it will help their heart, mind and energy level.

Here are a few healthy nutritional tips. Use them to get you and your family eating right or use them to help get back to the way you used to eat before your eating habits changed.

Eat a variety of natural fruits and vegetables for nourishment… organic are the healthiest because there are no pesticides, etc. All fruits and vegetables supply different nutrients, so a variety is best.

Avoid trans fats contained in snacks and desserts with hydrogenated fats, found in many of kids’ conventional processed foods.

Try cutting down on refined sugar; this is found to be the source of health problems such as obesity, diabetes and dental decay. Try unrefined sweeteners like maple syrup and honey. Cut back on fruit juice or add water to it.

Toss your Teflon cookware. It can cause many varieties of cancers.

~ Doris J. Rapp, M.D.

PhysicalsA physical examination together with a medical history is used by your doctor to assist in the diagnosis process. Physical examinations are great for the fact that they can be interpreted immediately. Physical examinations are not only reserved for patients experiencing symptoms but is also recommended as a way of ensuring your general health is good – you won’t always notice symptoms when something is wrong. All the information is recorded which then becomes your medical record.

ImmunizationVaccines work to safeguard children from illnesses and death caused by infectious diseases. Vaccines protect children by helping prepare their bodies to fight often serious, and potentially, deadly diseases. Vaccine-preventable disease levels are at or near record lows. Public health agencies and doctors work closely to improve and sustain immunization coverage and to monitor the safety of vaccines so that this public health success story can be maintained and expanded in the century to come.

Acne TreatmentIt’s important to know that there is no true cure for acne. If untreated, it can last for many years, although acne usually clears up as you get older. The following treatments, however, generally can keep acne under control.

• Be patient. It takes three to six weeks to see any improvement. Give each treatment time to work.

• Be faithful. Follow your program every day. Don’t stop and start each time your skin changes.

• Follow directions. Not using the treatment as directed is the most common reason the treatment fails.

• Don’t use medication prescribed for someone

else. Doctors prescribe medication specifically for particular patients.

• Don’t overdo it. Too much scrubbing makes skin worse. Too much benzoyl peroxide or Retin-A cream makes your face red and scaly.

Allergies in Children• Egg Allergy• Do Allergies Cause Asthma?• Eek! It’s Eczema!• Learning About Allergies• Food Allergies

Scoliosis in ChildrenWithin osteopathic circles, it is well known that scoliosis (apart from structural scoliosis) can often be corrected - especially if the problem is detected early among young children whose skeletal structures are not yet fully developed.

Among older children and adults, scoliosis can at least be minimized such that it does not result in severe deformity, nor present any serious health problems. In some cases, even among adults, the degree of spinal curvature can be reversed.

Some of the tools and techniques used in osteopathy for correcting scoliosis include:• Osteopathic manipulation;• Postural exercises and physiotherapy;• Correction for leg length discrepancy and flat

feet through the use of orthotics.

Detect scoliosis as early as possible; ask about our scoliosis screening test for you and your children.

Need a vacation this winter? If so maybe you should consider one of these two spots. We picked Walt Disney World in sunny Orlando Florida which tends to be a household favorite and our second choice with the help of others being on the complete other end of the spectrum a true Winter Wonderland Aspen Colorado. See a breakdown on airfare, hotel and rental car accommodations for both vacation spots below:

DISNEY WORLD ON A BUDGETWhat we did with this one was instead of staying directly on a Disney property, our researchers did their homework on nearby rental condos and homes. The prices that are indicated are all approximate prices which have been revealed in research. Airfare cost $248.00 - $300.00 per

person. Hotels average a night $109.00 - $189.00. Home/Condo rentals in Kissimmee (within 5-10 minutes to all parks)

$679.00 – 1,300.00 for a weekly rental with between

3 and 4 bedrooms. Rental car weekly rates $184.00 - $460.00 (economy car-minivan). A 4-day base park ticket for Disney World parks will cost you $274.00 for ages 3-9 and $294.00 for ages 10+.

WANT TO TAKE A SCENIC VACATION SOMEWHERE BEAUTIFUL WITHOUT THE BEACH AND SUN? Straight out of a snow globe with the soaring Colorado Rockies in the background and picturesque landscape is Aspen. The main draw in Aspen is skiing, but there’s more to do than just that. With high end shopping, museums, galleries, festivals and breathtaking

scenery it may be hard to take to the slopes. With all this fun, there is something to do for everyone in the family and most importantly things to do as a family. So no matter how you spend your time, it will be a vacation that you will never forget. The prices that are indicated are all approximate prices which have been revealed in research. Airfare cost $488.00 - $658.00 per person (connecting flights to Denver CO to Aspen). Condo rentals in Snowmass Village $225.00 - $279.00 a night. In downtown Aspen you will find prices a bit lower $139.00 - $279.00 a night. Rental car weekly rates $314.00 - $492.00 (economy car-minivan).

□ Install anti-virus software: Digital bugs are still the most common and damaging threat to most computers, and they require a solid defense.

□ Get a spam blocker: Spam doesn’t just mean annoying ads anymore—it introduces all kinds of new threats, such as phishing scams.

□ Guard against spyware: Obtain reliable anti-spyware software. Crooks want to know what you’re doing online and they’ll use that information in harmful ways.

□ Build a rewall: Don’t worry, it isn’t hard to do. A rewall is just a digital barrier that keeps hackers out. They exist on most operating systems, so make sure yours is turned on. If you don’t have a rewall, you can download one.

□ Create penetration alerts: Set all of the above defense software to notify you when suspicious activity is occurring.

□ Setup effective encryption keys on your wireless home networks: Always use long, automatically-created net-work encryption keys and rotate them regularly. You can also nd wireless protection software that can walk you through this process.

□ Install security patches: New vulnerabilities are regularly exploited in many software platforms. You should check for and install updates on all software you use.

□ Backup important les: No amount of protection is a guarantee, so take preventative steps to save your data before it can be damaged.

□ Always watch for Internet scams: Online criminals al-ways think of clever new ways to rob you. Don’t get lured in by emails telling sad stories, making unsolicited job of-fers or promising free money.

□ Take care when shopping online: Look for indicators that the site is secure, like a small lock icon on your browser’s status bar, a trusted seal like those from Veri-Sign or TRUSTe and a website URL that begins “https” (that “s” stands for “secure”).

□ Don’t open unknown email: If you have no idea where an email comes from, take the safe course and delete it before opening it.

□ Treat IM seriously: Attacks can come through instant messaging programs as easily as they can through other channels.

□ Treat it just as you would email and stay on guard from nasty les.

□ Beware of le sharing: Make sure you scan shared les for viruses. Also, set up the le sharing software carefully and take the time to read the software’s User Agreement to be clear about any side effects that may be built in.

□ Create smart passwords: Your online and computer passwords should be at least 8 characters long and in-corporate letters, numbers and symbols. Use different passwords for different accounts, change them every 90 days and never share them with anyone.

CYBER SAFETYCHECKLIST

McGruff’s Safety TipsWith school being back in session, make sure your kids are safe at school by following these safety tips: Listen to children. Encourage children to talk to you about school, special events, other kids in class, the walk or ride to and from school so you can identify any problems they may be having. Learn more at http://stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/

Teach your children that there is safety in numbers. At all times children should walk with at least another friend or be in a group to avoid any problems such as bullying, luring and/or abducting. No child should ever walk or play alone when not in the presence of an adult.

9 Ways to protect your home from Burglary:

Trim your shrubs/bushes: This will give intruders less places to hide. Another tip is to make sure all doors and windows are visible to neighbors and passerbys.

2 Keep your blinds closed, especially when you’re not home: This will keep intruders from window shopping.

3 Don’t advertise new purchases: Break apart any boxes of new purchases of TVs, computers, video games etc.. Those types of boxes seen at your curb can entice an intruder for what is new in your home. Also, don’t advertise on Social Media what you just purchased and if you are away somewhere.

4 Purchase motion sensors: This will cause illumination and will help deter the intruder rather than entice with low or no lighting conditions at all.

5 Set indoor timers: Using timers on lights, radios and even televisions a half hour before it gets dark will help make it appear that someone is home.

6 Reinforce all entry points: Make sure all entry doors are either solid wood or steel wrapped wood-core doors.

7 Invest in an alarm system: If entry is made the alarm will sound and help deter the intruder. Most alarm companies will also have Police en route.

8 Install dead bolts: Dead bolts should be used on every entry door.

9 Last but not least, use common sense: Simply lock your windows and doors whenever you leave your home.

Fire Safety Corner

Here are a few Fire Prevention tips to keep in mind:• Your house number on the exterior

of your home must been seen clearly from the street during the day and night. This is important for all emergency personnel.

• Teach children to stay out of the “safety zone” when grown-ups are cooking. The “safety zone” is the 3-foot space around the stove.

• It is very important to have a smoke alarm in every bedroom and a

carbon monoxide detector/detectors in your home. (You should install new batteries in all smoke detectors once a year if the detectors are not hard wired to your home electrical system). A good way to remember is when you change your clocks for daylight savings you should be replacing your fire detector battery.

• Household members must have a fire escape plan and always have a meeting place outside.

• Teach all household members how to dial 911 for the Fire Dept. once they are safe outside.

Obstructive sleep ApneA (OSA) is recognized as repeated episodes of cessation in breathing during sleep. This happens because our muscles relax during sleep and then gravity pulls the airway closed. Momentary suffocation develops producing excessive stress on the body. Some common signs of sleep apnea are excessive daytime

sleepiness, loud or disruptive snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, depression and irritability.

OSA can cause memory loss, headaches, irritability, depression, sexual dysfunction, and impaired concentration. Sufferers are at higher risk of stroke, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and are most likely to be involved in accidents at the workplace or while driving. They are twice as likely to die in their sleep. If left untreated, their life expectancy is 55.

The good news is, there are solutions available, and the sooner you or a loved one takes the steps to get screened, tested and treated, the better the outcome. By taking action, patients’ sleep problems will be a nightmare of the past as they not only improve the restfulness and length of their sleep, but also their overall health and quality of life.

most medical insurance plans cover sleep apnea solutions.

snoring can have many causes, the most common being obstructive sleep apnea (osa). it is estimated that 70% of the people who snore loudly suffer from this condition.
