Coaching Staff
Veteran head coach Kris Naber enters her 16th season at the helm of the Grand Canyon University women’s volleyball program.
Only 14 wins from 250 for her career, Naber is the winningest volleyball coach in GCU history.
Her 2009 team finished with a 21-8 record (.724 winning percentage). It was Naber’s fourth 20-win season and second best overall in her tenure. The Antelopes finished the year on a nine-game winning streak.
During the 2007 season, Naber reached the 200-win milestone while the GCU program won their 400th all-time match.
In 1999, her fifth year at the school, Grand Canyon posted a 25-7 record, Naber’s best season.
A former GCU volleyball player, she passed her former coach and predecessor Terri Smith in all-time coaching wins with a 3-0 victory at Chico State on Nov. 7, 2003.
She has had seven winning seasons in her coaching tenure, including back-to-back winning campaigns in her first two years and a three-year run of winning seasons from 1998-2000.
Naber has coached several players who’ve broken records at Grand Canyon. In 2002, GCU setter Natalie Jandreau moved past Teri Tanita in career assists. By the conclusion of her senior year in 2003, Jandreau amassed 4,474 assists which is 1,676 more than Tanita, who stands second all-time. In 1999, Amber LeTarte became Grand Canyon’s all-time leader in kills and digs.
In 2008 then-freshman Laurann Durbin broke Naber’s record for digs in a single season with 530. She topped it again in 2009 with 584. The coach had 515 in 1989.
As a player at Grand Canyon, Naber chalked up numerous honors for her accomplishments. In 1988, she recorded 1,065 assists, 481 digs and 43 service aces, helping her earn All-District honors for that
season. During the 1989 campaign, she was named Grand Canyon’s first volleyball All-American for the NAIA and Asics Tiger Teams. She was also selected to the All-District team, the All-Southwest Region team and earned Most Valuable Player accolades for the Rocky Mountain Association Classic and the Canyon Court Classic.
Naber can be found in several places in the Grand Canyon record books. She ranks sixth in career assists (2,306) and eighth in career digs (996), demonstrating her expertise with both offensive and defensive skills. Naber is tied for first for games played (150 in 1988).
After her playing days, Naber served as a graduate assistant under Smith. From there, she moved on to Agua Fria High School, where her teams advanced to three state tournaments during her four-year tenure.
Naber earned her degree in Physical Education for secondary teachers from GCU in 1991. Formerly Kris Belcher, she and her husband Jon reside in Glendale with their children, Nickolas, Shelby and Tatum.
Grand Canyon, 1991Overall Tenure at GCU: 16th year (236-211, .528).

ANTELOPE GYMNASIUM
The on-campus facility has a capacity of 2,000, and is a part of a larger facility that encompasses the Old Antelope Gymnasium. The newer gym was also the site of a celebrity basketball game headlined by the likes of Magic Johnson and Deion Sanders as part of the Super Bowl XXX festivities in Phoenix in 1996. The Phoenix Suns have used Antelope Gymnasium for private workouts. University of Arizona’s Head Basketball Coach Lute Olson also used the facility for one of his many successful basketball coaching videos.
Antelope Gymnasium opened in 1994 and hosts all of Grand Canyon University NCAA contests in men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling, in addition to dozens of amateur tournaments, concerts and other year-round events.
The facility is located on the northwest corner of campus at 3300 W. Camelback Road, Phoenix, Arizona.

2010 GCU Women’s Volleyball Media Guide 26
W ith the 2010 Grand Canyon University women’s volleyball season on the horizon, head coach Kris Naber wants her team to remember
the past.
Naber isn’t being nostalgic; she just wants this year’s club to pick up where the 2009 team left off.
With 10 players back from last season, the 21-8 campaign and season-ending nine-game winning streak are fresh in their minds.
“We have the core group back from last year,” said Naber. “Every team is different, but from the spring and with our first (preseason) meeting, we have focused on how we finished off last year and we expect to pick up where we left.”
Stressing a winning history was also a theme for Naber’s recruiting.
While the newcomers have their individual talents, many have come from very successful programs, too. Frosh hitters Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley) and Carly Edington (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) have experience playing against each other deep into the Arizona high school state tournament.
Junior college transfer Brooke Blomenkamp (Gering, Neb./Gering (W. Nebraska CC) had a combined record of 101-8 over two seasons.
Frosh middle hitter Kristen Johannsen (Phoenix, Ariz./Valley Christian) is coming off a state championship season.
Setter Jessica Posse (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) and libero Jackie Luallen (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) both played for 20-plus win prep teams in California.
Frosh Megan Davis (Tempe, Ariz./Mesa Westwood) comes to GCU from one of Arizona’s historically successful 5A high school programs.
A transfer from Division I Northern Arizona, sophomore Sara Bowden (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol (NAU)) earned region titles and played for two state titles while at Corona del Sol.
Junior hitter Stephanie McBride (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park (The Master’s College)) comes in as the newcomer with the most collegiate experience, playing two years at NAIA The Master’s College.
Even with a large returning group, the 2010 team is youthful. Thirteen of the 19 team members are freshmen or sophomores.
They’re young… and talented.
Sophomore setter Kristen Preach (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) missed two seasons to injury prior to 2009. She bounced back well enough to take PacWest Freshman of the Year honors.
Now a junior, libero Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) is coming off her second straight record-setting season. She had 584 digs, after tallying 530 as a freshman. They are the top two seasons in the program’s history for digs, beating coach Naber’s mark (then Kris Belcher) of 515 set in 1989. Durbin needs only 232 digs to become the program’s all-time leader.
The two young veterans will provide leadership and stability.
Sophomores Erica Ehlo (Spokane, Wash./Lewis and Clark), Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, Ariz./Christian), Caelen Hiller (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope) and Erin Compton (Billings, Mont./West) all saw ample time in their first collegiate seasons, Ehlo and Hiller as outside hitters, Taylor as a middle blocker and Compton at libero.
Added experience will come from the team’s lone four-year senior, outside hitter Megan Toth (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia), who has 600 kills and 100 blocks for her career and, junior setter Lisa Ramirez (Peoria, Ariz./Peoria), who had 18 digs in a match at Western Washington last season.
Both senior hitter Tommyka Henry (Phoenix, Ariz./Alhambra (Mesa CC) and sophomore defensive specialist Emily Draper (Phoenix, Ariz./Christian) will be vying for more time in their second seasons at GCU.
In a conference proud of its women’s volleyball tradition, the ‘Lopes are hoping to make a run at a Pacific West Conference title and automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament. They finished 10-6 in league play to place fourth in 2009.
“We have gone from, ‘Are we going to win?’ to more toward ‘What are we going to win?’” Naber said.
Along with a tough PacWest slate, Naber and Co. start off the season with a tough non-conference tournament schedule that includes opponents from the always tough California Collegiate Athletic Association, as well as, other key region foes in the UC-Colorado Springs event.

Just over four years ago, seven NCAA Division II programs banded together to revive a briefly dormant league, marking the rebirth of the Pacific West Conference.
In a short time the PacWest has been rocketing back to prominence thanks to national-caliber athletic programs, automatic qualifers, the addition of baseball as a conference sport, and the rise to a nine-team league.
The largest geographic conference in Division II saw its rebirth begin in the fall of 2006 when the league began competition in men’s and women’s soccer for the first time. Women’s basketball also became a league sport, complementing men’s golf, women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s basketball and softball, which have been a staple of the league for several years.
Grand Canyon University in Arizona, Dixie State College of Utah and Notre Dame de Namur University in California teamed up with longtime Hawai’ian-based PacWest programs Chaminade University of Honolulu, Brigham Young University Hawai’i, the University of Hawai’i at Hilo and Hawai’i Pacific University to re-form a conference that fell silent for one year.
In the fall, the Pacific West crowns champions in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s cross country, while the winter season is the domain of men’s and women’s basketball. In the spring, the league celebrates champions in women’s tennis, men’s golf, softball and, for the first time in 2009, baseball.
Following the 2004-05 campaign, the Pacific West Conference lost a pair of programs in Western New Mexico and Montana State-Billings to slip below the mandated six-team minimum that comprises an official NCAA Division II league. With it went the automatic qualifers for post-season play.
However, the four schools off the mainland competed together as an unofficial conference, playing each other in the sport of basketball so many times that game films quickly became obsolete.
Although not officially recognized by the NCAA that year, the perseverance by Chaminade, BYU-Hawai’i, HPU and Hawai’i Hilo
kept the core of a proud tradition intact until the three new schools put the league back on the Division II map.
And it is a big map.
From the Southwest to the Pacific Rim, the PacWest can redeem a lot of frequent-flyer miles, but its travel plans have its teams landing in major metropolitan markets that many established Division II leagues don’t match.
The schools in Hawai’i have a natural appeal to the local media and community because they turn out quality athletic programs in a focused market. BYU-Hawai’i tennis along with the Chaminade men’s basketball team’s prominent appearance in the Maui Invitational are just a couple of the highly-visible programs and, in 2010, Hawai’i Pacific’s softball program grabbed the conference’s second national title (BYU-Hawai’i won in women’s tennis in 2007) since the league’s rebirth.
NDNU calls Belmont, CA home and is situated midway between the two major media and population centers of San Francisco and San Jose. The addition of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2008-09 and Dominican University of California in 2009-10 gives the PacWest three schools in the Bay Area.
Dixie State is located in the southwest corner of Utah in St. George, not too far across the Nevada border from Las Vegas. The college draws interest from Salt Lake City and Provo as it became the first full-fledged NCAA Division II program in the state.
Grand Canyon University has been in the Division II bracket for a number of years. The Antelopes have a rich tradition of basketball, baseball and men’s soccer and have one of the largest markets in the nation with their location in Phoenix.
The PacWest conference is led by Bob Hogue, the former state senator from Hawai’i who is based in the island state. Hogue replaced Woody Hahn who retired after serving as the commissioner since the early 1990s.

GCU New Athletic Facilities
Student Recreation Center
Grand Canyon University’s new student recreation center will be a 55,000 square-foot playground featuring three basketball courts
and practice facilities for wrestling, basketball and volleyball. Located on the northwest side of campus and behind Kaibab Hall, the
facility will feature state-of-the-art men’s and women’s locker rooms, athletic training facilities and a student fitness center for use by
all campus residents. The facility is scheduled to open in October.
The student recreation center and events center are being designed by Kansas City-based 360 Architecture, a design firm with vast
credentials in sports arenas, with local representation by Tempe-based Architekton.

Events Center
Grand Canyon University’s 5,000-seat events center promises to fill a void in athletic and performance facilities in the Valley, with
a “just-right” capacity for mid-size sporting events, musical performances, speaking engagements and conferences. With its main
purpose to host GCU’s men’s and women’s basketball, the Camelback Road location of the 135,000 square-foot venue will be an
ideal location for Christian concerts and outside performances. The facility broke ground earlier this summer and is anticipated to be
complete by the 2011-12 basketball season.

Grand Canyon University
A Learning Leader Based In Phoenix, Arizona
You’ll quickly discover that there’s more to the Grand Canyon
University experience than classroom learning and campus living.
Set in the heart of Phoenix, GCU is next door to all the urban
activities and attractions, including cultural and artistic centers,
concerts, five major professional sports teams and shopping
malls–plus all the outdoor attractions you would expect from a city
famous for its year-round sunshine, including golf, hiking, biking,
horseback riding and much more. Whether you enjoy the fast-
paced city life, the mysteries of nature, or the fiery sunset painted
in the sky each evening, you’ll find that GCU offers exactly what
you want and need in your life. Founded in 1949, Grand Canyon
University is Arizona’s faith-based university and is recognized as
a leader among higher-learning institutions. GCU is a regionally-
accredited, private, non-denominational Christian university
that offers online and traditional campus-based bachelor’s
and master’s degree programs while emphasizing individual
attention for both traditional undergraduate students as well as
working professionals.
The Educational Experience Of A Lifetime
With a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, Grand Canyon University provides
the highest level of personal attention from professors who know
you by name. The GCU curriculum demands scholarly focus
and thorough dedication from students. Although the curriculum
is challenging, you will not be alone. The professors will be on
your side every step of the way, helping you explore your
academic gifts.
Around Campus
Grand Canyon University is equipped with amenities such as
an Olympic-sized heated pool, computer lab, library, Wi-Fi, the

married students, students with families and those who just want
more space.
What Happens When You’re Not Studying?

includes an active Student Union, Latté Dah Café, movie nights,
a recreational pool, a wide variety of sports, a fully equipped
exercise facility and a strong spiritual life that includes chapel, The
Gathering (a contemporary evening chapel), community ministries

Phoenix
Things are different in the desert. The sky is bigger. The
stars are brighter. The sunsets stop you in your tracks.
It’s a feeling that can’t be conjured, landscaped or
kindled with twinkling bulbs. John Ford knew that. So
did Frank Lloyd Wright. Come to greater Phoenix and
you’ll understand, too.
America’s fifth-largest city still has real cowboys and
rugged mountains and the kind of cactus most people
see only in cartoons. Phoenix is the gateway to the
Grand Canyon, and its history is a testament to the spirit
of puebloans, ranchers, miners and visionaries.
Projected against this rich backdrop is a panorama of
urban sophistication: Resorts and spas that drop jaws
and soothe souls. Stadiums and arenas worthy of the
world’s biggest sports spectacles. Restaurants with
inspired cuisine and inspiring patio views. Golf courses
that beckon players the year round. Shopping centers
as stylish and eclectic as the fashions they house.
This is greater Phoenix – Arizona’s urban heart and
America’s sunniest metropolis.

Administration
Chris RichardsonGeneral Counsel and Director
Brent Richardson joined Grand Canyon University in 2004 as CEO and was named to his current
position in July 2008. Prior to joining the University, he served as the CEO of Masters Online, LLC,
a company that provided online educational programs and marketing services to several regionally- and
nationally-accredited universities.
Prior to 2000, Richardson served as director of sales and marketing and later general manager of the
Educational Division of Private Networks, a company that produced customized distance-learning
curricula for the healthcare and automotive industries. He has more than 20 years of experience in the
education industry. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Eastern Illinois University.Brent RichardsonExecutive Chairman of the Board
Brian Mueller has his hand in just about every aspect of this growing organization’s success. He
joined Grand Canyon University in July 2008 to usher in a new era for the institution – from an
entrepreneurial venture to a market-supported public company. Of utmost importance in this transition
was maintaining the core of the University – the ground campus – and revitalizing programs that are
important to the traditional college experience.
A fixture at GCU athletic events, Mueller’s passion for sports (particularly basketball) have driven a
renaissance of GCU’s sports programs. His experience as a university professor, high school basketball
coach, alumni of a private university and his Christian faith help guide his leadership of Grand Canyon.
Since he took the helm of the institution, GCU has undergone plans for a major campus expansion
including a 5,000-seat performance center, recruited a highly regarded NCAA Division I basketball coach
to help in the University’s quest to break the ranks of Division II and is re-introducing popular programs
such as the College of Fine Arts, a program that was a part of GCU’s 60-year heritage.
