-Volleyball Idea Swap! – Vol. 3 Idea Sharing With Like-Minded Coaches

From Kelly…

My experience as a volleyball player started with the game of doubles. Two man

volleyball teaches you more about the game and faster than six person. For instance

here's a old drill that I learned from a couple of guys that was in our beach club.

This drill teaches team communication and the team to learn to look for open areas to

attack the opponent.

Coach set team goal.

This will be in the format of six person vice doubles:

Positions - Hitting Line, Setter, Passer, Tosser.

Tosser toss from across the net to a passer. (Passer can be the hitter as well)

Pass to the setter who set the hitter.

The passer calls the attack shot (line, angle, cross, tip [open area]) or roll shot as the hitter

jumps to hit.

A point is awarded for every correct attack as called by passer.

Variation - Design hand signals for the type of attacks...i.e. One finger hit line, two

fingers hit angle, cross fingers hit cross, four fingers tip, and five finger roll shot.

After the ball is set the attacker must find the hand signal by the tosser and attack as

signaled. A point is awarded for every successful attack.

More advance players can run this drill where the hitter digs a ball that setter hits at them

from the same side of the net. Hitter passes ball back to setter at the net. The setter sets

the ball then turn to look for the hand signal of the shagger and call the attack. If

successful team earn a point. The attacker become the setter and setter become the

shagger and the shagger rotates into the hitting line after shagging the ball. Add single

then double or triple blockers as the team become more successful.

Ultimately add a whole defensive team against the attacker. The signaler should be

behind the endline of the defense. A point is earned for every successful attack by the

attacking team.

If team is large enough play the a regular game if two signalers are available. Points are

only awarded to the attacking team if the attack is successful with the signaled attack.

It seems as if at times, I get stuck in a rut with drills. Also, in December, I have a week

and a half in between games. I'm currently coaching at the modified level and was

wondering if you had any suggestions for a fun competitive type practice on a Friday

where the girls would be in groups of 3 - 4 - 5 and they would challenge other groups to

different volleyball skill drills? Did that make sense to you? Please advise. Below

please find one of my favorite and the girls too conditioning drills.

Hand Soccer - Conditioning

- Split into 2 teams and each team picks a goalie (identify goal area with cones on each

endline - using volleyball court). Change goalies as often as you like.

- Can only use your hands

- Must stay low, helps with defensive positioning

- Cannot throw or kick, ROLL only

- Different person from each team starts face off at center court after each goal scored

with coach doing a dropped ball at mid line.

- Once the ball is in play each team can have half of their teammates on the opponets

court. Requires communication, as they may switch sides at any time as long as they

communicate with each other.

- Use volleyball court lines as boundries. If ball goes out on your team, it is rolled back

in from the sideline by the opposite team.

- Play for 10 minutes.

--//--

From Deb…

I set three girls up on one side of the net and then on the other side I have

three gals lay on the floor at the serving line and I slap the ball and hit it

at them. One has to call for it and then use their other two hits to get it

over the net to the other girls, they keep it going as long as they can. It

works quite well and it helps with the three hits.

--//--

From Howard…

I've been having problems with my girls moving their feet to the ball, so what I've done is

I make them set up in front by the net. I start tossing balls from the other side, and from

any where on the floor. I make them move laterally and deep for the ball. If they can beat

out the ball they are to get set and pass or make a good pass on the run. Girls retrieve

their own volleyballs to the basket. My girls are learn to track the ball better. I don't care

if they don't hit the ball as long as they are moving quickly.

From Julie…

DRILL for middle blocker/hitter. We call it "Blue Lips"

There is a tosser on each side of court.

On one side there is an outside hitting line, a transitioning setter and a right side hitting

line.

On the other side, there is a setter (front row), a middle blocker, and a left side hitter.

Coach tosses on MB's side making MB transition off net to hit. After hitting, tosser on

opposite immediately tosses ball to transitioning setter who sets OH or OPP hitter. MB

must quickly transition to person setting block, to close block and penetrate. After block,

tosser on MB side tosses immediately and MB must transition to hit.

This drill teaches MB to use correct footwork to get to the outside blocker, teaches

watching/learning timing on quick attack. Teaches fast paced offense and is a great

conditioner. Also helps setters transition and OH/OPP set block. Great communication

drill. You can do a certain number of reps or make it harder with a goal of number of

blocks or kills. This is a varsity drill.

--//--

From Karen…

One that comes to mind is, a server receive drill I do with my J.V team you have a

RB, MB, and LB Facing away from a line of servers. The first server serves the ball and

when the girls on the court hear the contact of the ball they must turn around and find the

ball and talk with one another. It's a tough one at first, but it gets them to transits and

know where the ball and each other are on the court.

Thanks alot I'm looking forward to some new ideas

I coach girls ages 8-12. So the ideas that you have given are ones that I can incorporate

for years to come.

At this age, here are a couple of items that I start the girls out with as far as setting . . .

When they first start out, I have them pair up. One girl sits on the floor with crossed

legs. The other is her tosser. The tosser tosses the ball to the seated girl who has her

hands in the setting position. She first practices catching the volleyball and then passes

back to the tosser by extending her arms and freezing. Once this is going well, we have

the seated player volley it back to the tosser. We then switch players for same time as

tosser and setter.

After we have gotten the setting motion, I have the young girls practice setting to a

target. This target happens to be a basketball hoop (lowered for younger ages). This

gives them a high target so that the setter can practice a high set with accuracy while the

goal is in the hoop.

--//--

From AJ…

One of the greatest tips I've learned so far was from a very wise coach who's now retired

but still referees in my area. We all know that huddles can be a very emotional time for

players especially when the time out has been called because the players are in a

downward spiral. Coaches can make the mistake of adding to an already emotionally

volitile situation by laying their own frustration on top of the player's. You can avoid this

by graphing the progress of the game, either yourself or have an assistant coach do it for

you, with a very simple but highly visual graph. Start with a straight line across a sheet of

paper which represents 0-0 at the beginning of the game and a tie thereafter. For each

point you score place a dot above the line moving it up for every point your team scores

and move the dot down for every point scored against. Try to keep you spacing even and

it quickly shows you scoring trends, it keeps track of the score, (because as much as we

would like not all scorekeepers are perfect! ) it keeps track of what rotation you are in.

You can develop your own symbols to put beside the dots and this further analyses how

points were scored against and for your team so you will know what areas to work on

(i.e. k=kills, SE=service error, b=blocked attack, etc.) The graph looks something like

this:

*K (Score = 5-1 with a + 4 point streak)

* SA *SH

* K *K *SA

* B * SE *K

*K_______________

* PE

(Score =6-5 : -5 point Streak)

You can cirlce trends for the time out so that if you are in a downward slump and the

coach shows the trend it's the cold hard data doing the talking not the coach emotionally

blaming the player.

From Dougal & Deb…

10ft Drill

Split the team in two......placing half on either side of the net in front of the attack line.

The court is now attack line to cantre line and side lines. The ball is tossed in by the coach

and the players must play the ball.....3 touches(preferably). After each touch that player

must sprint to the end line(or wall.....depending on your mood or circumstances) and

return to the play. It focuses on communication, seeing the court(holes on the other side

of the net), fitness, controlled attacking, and movement to cover holes.....and is also fun.

From Angela…

I have a simple drill that is used as a warm up for upper skill levels but can

also be used at younger levels with little change:

Triangles: Passing or Setting

Girls get in groups of three. Spread out about 10 feet apart. One ball per group.

Objective-Pass ball around in the triangle and keep it from hitting floor. Just like in a

game the ball comes from one area of the court and you need to get it to another area.

Triangle drills help them with footwork and using the proper platform. I know there are

two schools of thought here:

1. Player squares up to where the ball is coming from and adjusts platform to pass to

setter or...

Page 8: Volleyball Idea Swap - Clarke's Classesclarkesclasses.weebly.com/uploads/6/4/0/7/6407075/volleyball_idea_… · target. This target happens to be a basketball hoop (lowered for younger

2. Player squares up towards the setter keeping ball in the midline of the body to pass to

setter.

Girls start passing the ball around the triangle using the method you want to instill. (1 or

2)

This drill helps them to work on footwork and using the correct platform for passing so

the ball goes to the target area. This drill is very game like and it teaches them basic

fundamentals.

As players become more experienced you can add to the drill:

1. After passing athlete must turn around 360 degrees before the ball comes to them

again.

2. After passing ball player must touch their belly to the floor.

3. You can add your own creations; sprawls, push ups, sit ups, etc.....

--//--

From Barb…

I like to use a drill that we call "Earn a Player". It starts off with 2 vs 2 and a point is

only scored on a serve. Whoever gets the point earns another player. They need to select

a player for a certain position. This continues until one team has 6 players and then wins

the final point.

--//--

From Barbara…

Here is a good transition drill: transition 5

You play a team of 6 on one side and the coach or coaches continue to give them

different hits, off speed, free balls, tips and etc. for 5 minutes. Using the intensity and

speed of the game for your team. After 5 minutes switch positions and do another 5

minutes and so forth to all have played both front and back row positions.

--//--

From Sarah…

OK, here it is:

You play four on four, only each team really has 7 players on it (assuming that you carry

at least 14). The players off the court are peppering. If they mess up, they just initiate a

new ball and keep going. When someone on the court wins the point, they yell to their

"team" off the court to enter the ball that they're peppering with. They have to have it

currently in play, or the other team gets a free ball from the coach. As soon as the point

was won, and they were yelling for thier team to enter a new ball, the other team was

Page 9: Volleyball Idea Swap - Clarke's Classesclarkesclasses.weebly.com/uploads/6/4/0/7/6407075/volleyball_idea_… · target. This target happens to be a basketball hoop (lowered for younger

switching players--all off players have to enter, and one that was on, will stay. You play

to 10. If team A won the point, but their off players didn't have a peppered ball in play at

that moment (so you entered a free ball to the other side), no point is awarded to either

team for that last rally. I hope this makes sense.

--//--

From Brian…

The following is a description of a very simple passing drill I like to call “Mine”.

The drill can be modified in many ways bur here are the basics.

Six members of the team are set up on one side of the court as if preparing for a game or

scrimmage situation. The coach (or proficient server from the team) serves from the other

side of the court. Once the ball is served, all members of the team who ARE NOT going

to receive the ball (5 hopefully) drop down to one knee. The player who IS going to

receive the ball will move into position, call out “mine” and then catch the ball while

ensuring a proper passing posture is maintained. In its most simple form, the drill teaches

very strict serve reception skills by only allowing one player to assume the duty of

receiving the ball. If more thought is given to the process, it can be noted that the drill is

also allowing for an enhanced level of anticipation due to the fact that every player must

quickly make a decision whether or not to kneel or remain standing and receive the ball.

I have found that this drill is very effective for younger players who are just learning the

rules and passing assignments associated with serve reception.

Variations to the drill are as follows:

For higher skill level players, the coach can specify that the players who are not receiving

the ball first take their next position before taking a knee. Examples – hitters go to the

spot where they would begin their approach, setters would go to their “spot” and

additional passer (mainly back row) should be in a general area to cover a ball that is

“shanked” in a direction that is predetermined by the coach.

Also, by serving to more difficult areas such as the setter’s position or in between passers

you can add an element of “what-if” to the drill.

I am unsure if there is a drill similar to this out there, but I have not run across it as of yet

if there is. Like I mentioned previously, the drill is very basic but can be tailored to

specific needs with some creative thinking.

From Angie…

Team Building Activities:

I use team activities once a week. Sometimes I will do paper/pencil ones on the bus while

traveling to a game and others we do in the gym after practice. Here is one of each. These

ideas all came from Jeff Janssen's 'Peak Performance Playbook'. I attended one of his

clinics years ago.

Magic Shoes:

We put a padded mat (10' x 20') down on the floor to simulate a river. I gave the team a

pair of size 18 converse shoes. (I advertised on our email looking for the biggest pair I

could find) The teams goal was to get the whole team across the river with out falling in

and follow all rules.

RULES:

-you must wear the magic shoes to cross the river. (walk across the mat)

-once you have worn the shoes across you cannot wear them again.

-no throwing the shoes across the river and they must travel as a pair at all times.

As with any type of activity, there is always a chance of injury when doing this exercise.

Walk with them as a spot so if they start to fall you may ease the fall. You could put mats

down as a cushion.

If they fail they need to start all over from the beginning. Plan on this taking some time. I

would not tell them anything about how to do it. They need to brainstorm together to

come up with ideas. As they work pay attention to discussions, ideas and the process they

used to figure it out. Then after they all get across, ask questions about their journey.

Who were the leaders of this exercise? What kind of planning and strategizing was

involved?

How well did teammates support, respect, and trust each other? How did your team

handle adversity?

Stop Light:

To get your players to learn they can choose how they want to respond to difficult

situations and that this choice dictates their success. He uses the stop light for an analogy

of where you are mentally in practice or a game. Explain to the team that each light

represents their mental game.

Green -player is confident, aggressive, composed, focused and in control

Yellow-player is hesitant, distracted, nervous and unsure.

Red -player is angry, frustrated, out of control, felling helpless and wanting to give up.

Page 11: Volleyball Idea Swap - Clarke's Classesclarkesclasses.weebly.com/uploads/6/4/0/7/6407075/volleyball_idea_… · target. This target happens to be a basketball hoop (lowered for younger

I give the girls a paper that has a picture of a stop light printed on the left side of the

sheet. Questions are listed on the right side for them to answer.

Green-

When were you in green? What % of the game in green?

What did you do to get to green?

Yellow-

When were you in yellow? What % of the game were you in yellow?

How did/could you get to green?

Red-

When were you in red? What % of the game did you spend in red?

How can you prevent the red from happening next time?

You could also use questions from a specific game that happened to the team.

List some challenging scenarios that your athletes typically must face: not starting or

getting to play, making a mistake during a game, poor officiating, getting injured and

have to sit out for a period of time.

Discussion time after they have filled in each question. How did each of these responses

affect the individual's and team's success? How might a person's response influence a

teammate's mental game?

Good luck, I am sure you will see the athletes enjoy these and want more.

One of the drills that we do is a progression serve/serve rec drill

Our S/R is 3 person so we work the drill from there.

Servers serving to SR passers who pass to Setter target

Players rotate from Serve to Pass to Target to Serve. (this is part of our warm up)

Add: setter target setting or passing to OH target more contacts, ball control

Add: Put setter in position, set passer for an OH. works on passer trans to hitter.

We also add an OH to the 3 per rec and passer will only move to OH on a good pass,

other wise they move straight to serve

and to add screens.

Add: passers in pos by our game rotations with a server serving multiple att

We will also add goals ( 10 good passes in a row)

We add consequences (10 pushups for a missed serve)

Outside Hitter: Reach and Snap Drill

Objectives:

Teach players to reach high and snap their wrists by tossing the ball off the net the player

will have to hit the ball as high as they can and use topspin to keep the ball in the court.

1. Split players into groups of three or four.

2. Start at number one line.

3. Coach tosses balls.

4. Players must approach and hit the ball over the net and in the court.

5. After a sit number of tosses for each player( 5 ) move up a line.

6. Continue until the group is hitting at the net.

--//--

From Herb…

Here's a drill I do for passing, Have the players close their eyes and visualize making a

pass ( have them in ready position, and passing form) then have them move to their left

then to their right. Then I have them open their eyes and have balls tossed to them (break

your team up so that you can have a tooser for each player) then switch positions.

--//--

From Rob…

I do a drill called ‘Exhaustion Serving’; the purpose is to get girls used to being able to

serve after a long, exhaustive volley.

My gym has a set of bleachers about 20 feet behind the end line; I have the players, in

groups of 3, touching the bleachers. I am at the net with a bucket of balls ready to toss

for outside hitting. When the drill starts, the first girl runs to the 10 foot line, then I toss

her a ball to hit, she then runs back to the bleachers. When the first girl gets to the 10

foot line, the next girl starts her run. This goes on continuously until each girl has hit 5

balls. IMMEDIATELY following, they go to the service line where they are given 5

balls to serve in rapid succession. The more control they have over their serve by then,

the better prepped they will be for game day!

--//--

From Laura…

One drill that really works with my girls is a serving drill. A lot of people hate to practice

serving and they find it boring so I put a little twist to it. I have the team split in half. One

half serves while the other "receives". The "receivers" all pick a spot on the court

between the attack line and the back line and they stand their with their hands to their

sides. They can't move or flinch. If a server hits one of the "receivers" the "receivers" all

have to do 5 push-ups. If a server gets a serve out or in the net the whole serving team has

to do 5 push-ups. Once the group is done serving then you switch sides and do it all

again. This drill helps with accuracy as well as conditioning.

*You can also do this in smaller groups to make it more of a competition with a server

getting to choose who they want to give their 5 push-ups too if they hit someone.

Probably something that coaches already do.

I coach a Junior High School girls group at a private club. They are mostly 7th graders

that will attempt to make the team next season. So skills are very basic.

Most of my drills I try to make dynamic, since the ball is always in motion, I have the

girls in motion when making passes.

We do a slide and bump and slide and pass drills across the entire length of the gym.

Done in pairs of course.

The go across one direction and then the other. First time at 10' apart, then 20'.

A good warmup focus drill keeping their eyes on the ball while being able to see their

teammate in the background and leading the passes down court.

The girls are doing it slowly now and then we will speed it up later.

From Tony…

I coach middle school volleyball (8th grade) and also am a club coach for the local 16U

team. One of my favorite drills for smaller groups such as club is a 4 on 4 or 5 on 5

progression drill that covers all aspects of the game for both offense and defense. On the

offensive side you get pass, set and hit and on the defensive side you get blocking and

digging then transition to offense. We call the drill "Team Progression".

1. Team on offense starts out with one (4 person) or two (5 person) passers with hitters

and setter in position. Team on defense starts with one or two passers and front row

players in base defense at the net.

2. Coach initiates the drill with a free ball and the players play out the point, working

team offensive and defensive strategies. After a set number of free balls players serve

and the point is played out.

3. The twist to this drill is, coach calls out specific sets, hits and serves while the play is

ongoing. When the pass is up coach calls out a set, when the set is up coach calls out

where the hitter is to hit and the process repeats itself on the other side. The defense will

know what is coming which makes the hitters work all the harder to execute the play.

This drill addresses all aspects of the game, including accuracy/placement and

communication in a game-like environment. To make it more competitive we keep score

as follows:

1 point for a good pass

1 point for a good set as called by the coach (or if you allow the setter to call sets the ball

must go where called)

1 point for a good hit

2 bonus points for a kill

The team can earn the first three points regardless of which team wins the rally. Using

the above as a base the coach can modify this drill in many ways to work on specific

skills in a game-like environment.

From Annette…

I use this drill to work into my offensive practice. Start with a "serving" line at the ten

foot line on right side of court. Passing line on the other side of the net - deep - left side.

Target at the net. Have the server serve to the passing line and the passing line pass to

target. To begin with I have target jump and catch the ball. Players rotate to each line.

After a few minutes - setters only in target line - set into a basket that I place in hitting

position. After that goes well - passer passes and then moves in to hit. Then move server

back - add two more passing lines - this becomes server receive. Left side moves into hit

after the pass. Then add a right side hitter. Setter chooses to serve left or right hitters.

At this point you have the whole team ready and warmed up and passing to target.

Tons of variations. Just make it work for you.

From Jill…

The girls really enjoy "Bitty Court". When practices are getting too serious, we play this

game.

Happens in front of the 10 foot line (out of bounds line). Works on control of the ball.

Have the kids split up into teams of two. Split the court in half that way you can run two

games at a time.

One side serves, play done when ball goes out or does not go over. Team that lost steps

off the court, another team steps on. Similar to queen of the court.

This can also be done with two full teams, all in front of the 10 foot line, using full court.

After a member hits the ball, they must run back and touch the serving line, then back up

front to receive the ball. Can run it with points or by a time limit.

1-2-3 are hitting balls at one Passer for 30-60 seconds

Passer passes the ball to the target

Passer shuffles in a low defensive position across the back row and back for 30- 60

seconds

shaggers keep 1-2-3 in a steady supply of balls

we started out at 30 seconds and every time the ball hit the floor I added 5 seconds, then I

added that they must hit the floor on one of the digs

This drill helped the hitters get some good contacts (we're working on a high armswing)

From Dane…

Here is a warm-up drill that my girls beg me to do. It is called Four Corners.

One girl starts in the outside position, ready to hit. The rest of the girls are spread out

shagging balls. The coach tosses a ball for the girl to approach and hit on the strong

side. Immediately after hitting, she retreats back down the line, to the left back position.

The coach hits a ball at her and she has to stop moving and play the ball. The coach then

tosses a short ball to the back right corner and the girl has to hustle and try to get a

pancake, or even a touch, on the ball. They immediately get up and the coach tosses a set

on the right side, which the girl has to approach and hit. She has now played four

different balls in all four corners of the court. The girls all rotate through this drill 3-4

times.

1--hit on left side

2--retreat and dig a ball in right back

3--pancake, or just touch a ball in right back

4--get up and approach and hit right front

I have also enclosed a copy of my serve receive. I have designed a serve receive that puts

the setter in position at time of the serve, and puts my front row hitting in there given

positions off of the serve. It is designed for a 6-2, but could be easily adapted to a 5-1.

Note: in serve receive 3, my right side hitter takes the first set. Use this how you want.

From Joe…

A drill I like to use is what I call 5 on 2.

Objective: Get the back row to get in the most likely angles if the middle bites on the

quick and can't get outside.

Procedure: Put three in the back row and two in the front. The two in the front row are the

wing blockers. On the opposing side of the net, have two hitting lines (4 and 5) (or four if

you want to add the back row attack). There should be no attack from the middle or pipe.

On the hitting side, toss balls right to the setter so that all three options are available. The

setter will only set 4 or 5 (or red or blue depending on how many hitting lines are being

used).

The wing blocker should focus on taking away as much of the approach angle from the

hitter as possible and reach into the angle that they think the hitter is going to hit into.

The back row should adjust to "read" the hitter and get in the most likely place the ball

will be attacked based on the set.

What to look for:

How the back row is reading the hitter and if they are getting into a location where the

ball could be attacked. If they are not, watch their eyes and where they are looking. They

should be looking at the attacker (not the ball) as well as where the blocker is relative to

the set.

Toss 10 balls then rotate. Or, you can say that 5 balls must be dug 20 and 10 (20 feet high

and 10 feet off the net) before you rotate or change the players.

Variation:

Add the middle in and the quick hitter. Have the middle blocker bite on the quick (as they

should on the good pass) and have the setter deliver the ball 4 or 5. Watch how the floor

defense reacts.
