1. Butterfly (passing) Objective- To improve serving accuracy and consistency Steps - 1. 2 servers, 2 passers, and 2 catchers are set up as shown 2. server serves the ball to passer and runs to passing spot 3. Passer passes ball to catcher and runs to catching spot 4. Catcher catches ball and runs to serving spot 5. 2. Slide Step Passing (passing) Objective - to practice side-to-side movement for proper passing form.Steps - 1. Start the drill with two tossers with a ball each.2. The passer starts in front of one tosser.3. The first tosser tosses a ball to the passer.4. After passing the ball back to the tosser the passer slide steps in front of the second tosser.5. The second tosser repeats and the passer slides back in front of the first passer.

Variations - The passer can receive a toss from the diagonal tosser, then slide-step to other passing position and repeat. T = tosserP= passer

3.Front to Back Passing(passing)Objective - to practice passing while moving backwards.Steps - 1. Start the drill with a toss to the passer roughly 10 feet away.2. After passing the passer follows the pass back to the tosser and touches the tosser's foot.3. The passer runs back to the starting position.4. As the passer runs backwards the tosser tosses another ball.5. The passer passes the ball and repeats the drill until desired practice is done.

Variations- The tosser may toss the ball side to side or in front of the passer for a diving pass. T = tosserP= passer

4. Pass and Move (passing)

Objective - to practice a variety of passes along with conditioning.Steps - 1. Start the drill with a toss to the passer in the base position shown.2. After the pass the passer sprints up and touches the tosser's foot.3. The passer retreats diagonally back to the next base position, about half way the second tosser

tosses the next ball.4. After the second pass the passer sprints to behind the 2nd tosser.5. The passer then shuffles in a ready position behind the tossers.6. After passing the the 1st tosser the passer sprints back into line.

Variations - You can change direction of running and types of movement. T = tosserP= passer

5. Pass and Weave (passing)Objective - Practice moving left to right and passing, and staying in a low position while moving.Steps - 1. Players start in a ready position, receive a ball and pass back to target.2. Player shuffles and weaves around ball.3. Player receives another ball and passes back to target.4. Player shuffles behind ball.5. Player receives last ball and shuffles in front of ball.6. Player sprints back to line.

Variations - player can turn around and repeat the drill if their isn't a line. T=tosserP=passer

6. No Fear Defense (passing)

Objective - teach defence to dig all hits and make a play off of the pass.Steps - 1. Coach stands on a box in the middle of the net, where they can hit the ball down inside 10' line.2. Coach continuously hits balls to the defenders.3. After a set number of hits the defender can only exit the drill when they can pass a ball straight

up and catch it.Variations - A setter can be added to set the dug ball and the defense must make a hit after the dig. C=coachD=defence

7. 10/20/30 (volleying)Objective - Practice the overhead pass from different distances off a hit.Steps - 1. Starting from 10' away the hitter gives down balls directly to the head of the passer.2. The passer must go from the ready position to an overhead passing receiving position.3. The passer passes the ball directly back to the hitter.4. Change to twenty feet away and repeat.5. Change to thirty feet away and repeat.

Variations - volleys can be put to a setter, the volleyer can then hit the set ball back to the hitter.H=hitterP=passer

8. Overhead Passing Game (volleying)

Objective - to warm up volley before competition or game.Steps - 1. Coach starts the drill with a free ball.2. Each side receives two free balls then the other side starts..3. The players can use three contacts, but all must be the overhead pass.4. If the ball hits the ground or more/less than 3 volleys are used the team gains 1 point5. First to desired score loses.

Variations - Ball can be served in by coach or hit. p=passerc=coach

9. Kill the Setter (volleying)Objective - Practice transition from defense to setting and back againSteps - 1. Coach tosses a ball to the target.2. Setter transitions from back row and sets the ball to any one of the hitters3. Hitters hit the ball4. The setter transitions back to home base5. Repeat until the hitters hit ten balls down, in and without hitting the tape

10. Set-Set-Hit (volleying)Objective - Setters practice transitioning to net as quickly as possible and then set outside.Steps - 1. All players start lying face down on the end line.2. Coach slaps ball and tosses over the net to the middle back player.3. Setter transitions all the way to the net.4. OH hitter transitions to start of approach.5. Passer sets ball to target. ( not where the setter is, but where they are supposed to be )6. Setter sets outside.7. Outside hitter hits.

Variation - hitters may be in different court locations.P = Passer S = SetterC = Coach OH = Outside Hitter

11. Volleyball Foursquare (volleying)Objective - To teach faster movement to the ball and better placement when putting a freeball over.Steps - 1. Start with players randomly assigned to square.2. Player in square one serves underhand to square three or four.3. Goal of game is to get to and stay in square one.4. If a ball lands in a square the player in the square is out of the game. ( To end of line or to

square 4 ), or if a player hits an error (into the net, out of bounds, or anything but a volley).5. Players move up to fill in empty squares and only volleys allowed.

Variation - may be 2v2 and one pass to teammate allowed. #=square numberp=player

12. Dead Fish (serving)Objective - To improve serving accuracy and consistency.Steps - 1. Split up players into two even teams.2. Both teams continuously serve, make sure they concentrate before each serve.3. If a player misses a serve they must go lay on the other side of the court.4. The players that are laying down "dead fish" cannot serve again until one of their teammates

strikes them with a served ball.5. The team with the most players standing after time runs out ( 2 or three minutes ) wins.

Variation - dead fish can lie only on court boundaries on opposite side.

13. Around the World (serving)Objective - improve serving accuracy.Steps - 1. Each team must serve a ball to each area of the court.2. The team starts with a player in area one.3. When the team serves to their player, who is sitting down, and they can catch the serve, the

server moves and sits in the next area of the court.4. The target goes back to the line and serves.5. The teams continue until a team serves a ball to a player in each area.

Variation - more serving areas may be added. x=servers

14. Serving Relay (serving)Objective - to improve serve consistency.Steps - 1. Make two even teams.2. The first player from each team serves.3. The player must go and retrieve their serve.4. If they missed their serve they must serve again, until they make their serve.5. Once the first player makes a serve and retrieves the ball they can give the ball to the second

server.6. Continue until everyone has served.7. First team with everybody to serve wins

16. Target Practice (serving)Objective - To improve serving accuracy Steps - 1. Players are divided into 3 lines 2. Players at front of line aim for a square worth a certain value 3. Whoever hits the most valuable square wins round 4. Line with most winners wins game 5. 17. Combo Hitting (hitting)Objective - Practice hitting to hitting transition. Work on hitting recovery and footwork.Steps - 1. Coach tosses a free ball to a passer2. Passer passes to the setter3. Middle hitter hits the first of two predetermined sets.4. When ball hits ground coach tosses second ball to passer.5. Middle hitter transitions off the net6. Middle hitter hits second set.

Variation - hitter can alternate hitting postions P = Passer MH = Middle HitterC= Coach S = Setter A = 51 B = 31 C = 71

18. Hit the Pass (hitting)Objectives - Practice finding the ball off of a pass, and beat the ball to the setter position.Steps - 1. Coach gives a free ball to one side to one of the three passers.2. Passers pass the ball up to the net in a whittle position.3. Middle hitters find ball approach and hit ball.4. Give free ball to other side.5. Repeat desired number of times.

Variation - Put setter on the court to give passers a target. X = Passers MH = Middle hittersC = Coach

19. Slide Sprints (hitting)Objective - Practice hitting slides and controlling the momentum from a long approach.Steps - 1. Coach tosses ball to setter.2. Middle hitter begins moving toward the setter.3. Setter sets a slide set, a back set to the antennae.4. Middle hitter adjusts speed of approach and hits set off a one foot take off.

Variation - Put blocker or two blockers on the other side of the net. X = Middle Hitters S = SetterC = Coach

20. Middle Back Communication (hitter)Objective - Develop communication between middle back players and outside hitters.Steps - 1. Coach, standing behind the defenders, tells the block where to block, line, cross or leave a hole.2. The tossed throws a ball to one of the two passers.3. Passers pass ball to setter.4. Blockers set up in designated areas.5. Setter sets outside.6. Middle block tells outside hitter where to hit.7. Outside hitter hits where the middle designated.

Variation - Add Defensive Coverage. P = Passer OH = Outside hitter B = BlockC= Coach S = Setter

21. Blocking Progression (blocking)Objectives - Teach blockers to surround ball and penetrate the net.Steps - 1. Blockers stand on chairs or boxes to eliminate timing errors.2. Tossers throws ten balls to the blockers.3. Blockers surround ball with hands and catch the ball and the tosser's side of the net.4. For the next set of ten balls the blockers surround balls with their hands and block them down,

without batting at the ball.5. For the next set of ten balls the tosser hits down balls at the blocker's hand.

Variation - blockers jump instead of standing on chairs T = Tosser B = Blocker

22. Overpass Blocking (blocking)Objectives - Teach blockers to watch hitter instead of ball.Steps - 1. Coach tosses ball from behind blocker over the net to one of the hitters.2. Hitter jumps and hits the ball.3. Blocker jumps, read the hitter's shoulder and tries to stuff the ball.4. If the ball gets past the block the defense tries to dig the ball.5. Repeat by alternating tossers.

Variation - add setter on hitting side H = Hitter B = Blocker D = DefenderC = Coach

23. One on One (blocking)Objectives - Teach blockers to solo block.Steps - 1. Hitters start in the ready position for their approach.2. Blockers start at the net with the ball.3. Blockers toss balls for hitters, from either over or under the net.4. Repeat set number of times ( 10 ).5. Switch hitters and blockers.

Variation - add a blocker H = Hitter B = Blocker

24. Net Decision (blocking)Objective - Teach blockers when to block, hit an overpass, or back off and pass.Steps - 1. Tossers toss ball over the net to the blocker.2. Blocker must decide whether to block the ball, step off and pass, or to hit the ball.3. Repeat desired number of times.4. Switch tosser and blocker.

Variation - Add second blocker T = Tosser B = Blocker

25. Cross Court Pepper (warm up)Objectives - To practice ball control over the net and have a good warm - upSteps - 1. Player initiates drill with a down ball over the net to partner.2. Player must dig, set and return a down ball to partner cross court.3. Repeat.

Variation - Players must take an approach and hit a controlled ball to partner. X = Player

26. Six Touch Pepper (warm up)Objectives - To practice ball control with a wide variety of types of contacts.Steps - 1. Pepper starts off with one partner giving the other a down ball.2. The player digs the ball to themself.3. Then the player tomahawk's ( overhead contact ) the ball to themself.4. Next the player contacts with just the left fist.5. Then the right fist.6. Then the player sets themself.7. Then the players hits a down ball to partner.8. The partner repeats all contacts.

Variation - Players go across the net and must hit down balls over the net. X = Player

27. Over th Net Pepper (warm up)Objectives - To practice ball control over the net and have a good warm - up Steps - 1. Player initiates drill with a down ball over the net to partner.2. Player must dig, set and return a down ball to partner.3. Repeat.

28. 4x2 Pepper (warm up)Objective - To practice ball control over the net and have a good warm - up Steps - 1. Players on one side initiate drill with a down ball across net.2. Players must pass and set balls to themselves and then hit a down ball diagonal.3. Players then must pass and set balls to themselves and then hit a ball line.4. Repeat step 2 and continue.

Variations - Players must take an approach and hit a controlled ball to partner. X = Player

29. 10 foot Line Game (warm up)Objectives - A Good warm-up that teaches players to see movement on the other side of the net.Steps - 1. Play a game inside the 10' line.2. Coach tosses balls into the court to start play.3. Everytime a player touches a ball they must run and touch the end line before returning to play.

Variations - The team that loses a point has to do two pushups, and the coache tosses the next ball in before the entire team if finishedx = playerc = coach
