1.2.2. Strategy and legislation to protect against damage of
geological sites and features
The geopark has multiple mechanisms for conservation:
Law-based (National Park Convention and Cultural Properties Act),
nature restoration activities, de-facto conservation by traditional
‘commons’ management, Geopark induced conservation, and
various clean-up activities. In addition, signboards are set up in
geopoints where such activities are not present, these signboards
prevent fossil collection and unlawful extraction of the heritage.
(See the Conservation List)
1.2.3. How are the geosites protected against misuse and damage?
Warning signboards are put in place in major fossil sites.
1.2.4. What measures are carried out to protect geosites and
infrastructure against damage and natural degradation?
Geosites and surroundings are periodically cleaned by citizens and
local administration units. Specimens of landform or strata are
preserved at Komuroyama and Tanna Fault Park.

Interpretation and Guiding
Interpretation and guiding by Izu Peninsula Geoguide Association.
In addition specialist researchers also conduct guidance for
university, school visitors and researchers upon request. One of the
researchers also instruct geoguides.
Education programs
Geoguides provide special classes in local schools.
In Izu Sogo High School, geopark is a part of the mandatory
general education subjects. Science section students carry out
special geotours for elementary school students.
The Geoguide Training Program is directly administered by the
geopark, the Geoguide Association is a partner for this program.
Communication
98 registered geoguides at Izu Peninsula Geoguide Association and
freelance geoguides, Ito Fishing Cooperative, and local hotels/
restaurants that promote local food consumption---these are our
main partners in geopark management. In addition we encourage
the use of the logo by qualified parties, the geogashi geological
sweets made by a guide organization shares our logo, for example.

Promotion to the general public
We have good relationship with local newspaper publishers
(Shizuoka Shinbun, Izu Shinbun)—these media channels help us
to reach out to people and provide general and events related
information. Dr. Masato Koyama wrote guest columns on the
geological heritage of Izu for both newspapers. Geo-maps and
guidebooks etc. are published in collaboration with newspaper
publishers.
We are arranging symposiums with the Ministry of the
Environment and Shizuoka Prefecture. Various pamphlets, PR
documents are created by the cities, towns and the Shizuoka
Prefecture that feature our geopark.

2. Does a management or Master Plan exist?
Yes. Please refer to Izu peninsula Geopark Master Plan.
3. Master Plan Components
1. Developing the concept of ‘Izu-jin’(people who embody the
heritage of Izu).
2. To conserve and utilize the natural resources of the geopark.
3. Promoting natural hazard awareness and preparedness among
the local community as well as communicating such wisdom
to the outside world.
4. To create quality living environment.
5. To put in place a basic administrative system to support the
above mentioned activities.
4. Does your Geopark have a Marketing Strategy?
The Izu Peninsula Grand Design (2013)
The concept is to think Izu peninsula as ‘One Izu’, where residents
can feel a sense of pride, and identity of there are in the world.
This concept was finalized by mayors of cities and towns. Geopark
is positioned as the leading project for regional revitalization.
5. Geopark should protect its geological heritage and create
sustainable geotourism. What has been done to fulfil this duty?
(Application section B-3-1)
The geopark divides its geosites in categories on the basis of use.
Vulnerable geosites are protected under limited access status.
The geopark is collaborating with the Ministry of the Environment
to make a database of natural and cultural resources in and around
geosites.
In addition various citizen managed nature restoration and
protection schemes are seen throughout the geopark.
Geoguides are also active in generating awareness about geosite
conservation. Local administrative staff are helpful partners in a
number of such activities.
As for sustainable tourism, various efforts of eco-travel and local
business, handicrafts and food tourism promotion efforts are
present. We have detailed these aspects in the Application.

Limited
access
These sites can be visited by anyone: tourists, residents or researchers. But some of them pose difficulty of access or some safety concern. These are also valued for their common geotourism purpose. Visitors can access these sites when geoguides or tour operators are present.
27
Education
purpose
These sites have particular value for geoscience researchers. They pose no or little access issues, but sometimes the contents/explanation are not easily explained to all levels of visitors. Based on demand, information about these can be provided by the geopark, and is inscribed in the geospoint manual.
105
Research
purpose
Mainly for research purpose. They have geoscientific value but most are accessed with considerable difficulty. The geopark provides special guidance about these sites on a case-by-case basis.

5.3. Measures taken to regulate and reduce traffic (restricted
access, central parking lots, traffic guiding system, signposting
etc.)
Futo, Jogasaki coast geosites have restriction for buses or large
vehicles. This type of information is displayed on area maps.
5.4. Environmental friendly hiking path system
Omuroyama: Prohibition of directly climbing the scoria cone on
foot. Visitors are taken on the top by a cable car. This allows
protection of the fragile scoria layer. Local residents have come
together to manage this setup and the income is used for
conservation.
5.5. Clearly defined cycle or other trails such as bridleways or
river trails.
40 km cycling course along Kanogawa River, possible to enjoy
cycling and enjoying Joyama-Katsuragiyama panorama. 100 km
long running event is organized once a year.
Dogashima geosite cruise features local tour company and geoguie
collaboration.
6 Are there any initiatives or working groups who discuss
promotion of natural and cultural heritage
Working groups on conservation and tourism are present.
