Option 1 Create a comic strip or other visual representation of a volcanoes life cycle. There should be legible captions below each of the pictures. *Pictures should be neat and colored.* Since this is a comic, you can make a volcano up. Give it, its own unique name, just make sure that all requirements are fulfilled. Option 2 Write a newspaper article for a city newspaper about a volcanic eruption. *There must be a title and author included* For this option, you can make it up or you can use an actual eruption that occurred. Option 3 Create and write a song about a volcanic eruption that has or will occur. *There must be a title and author included* For this option, you can make it up or you can use an actual eruption that occurred. Information to include and guidelines - Type of volcano: Shield, Cone, Composite, Dome or Supervolcano - How the volcano forms: Include: Type of plate boundary, how the lava is generated, (include the role of water and/or pressure), any other information that is relevant - Describe the active stage of the volcano: Magma and lava type, types of igneous rock formed, type of gas emitted, size of volcano, shape of volcano including slope angle - Description of the eruption: Size of eruption, VEI scale with description, types of flow created - Describe the Impact on the Earth: Climate, animals, plants, ect. - Describe the Impact on humans: Disruption of life, crop failure, ect, - Magma Type: Water content, silica content, viscosity - Location of Volcano

Choose one of the options below to complete for tomorrow. You may work with a partner on this activity. Be creative and realistic!

Option 1

Create a comic strip or other visual representation of a volcanoes life cycle. There should be legible captions below each of the pictures.

*Pictures should be neat and colored.*

Since this is a comic, you can make a volcano up. Give it, its own unique name, just make sure that all requirements are fulfilled.

Option 2

Write a newspaper article for a city newspaper about a volcanic eruption.

*There must be a title and author included*

For this option, you can make it up or you can use an actual eruption that occurred.

Option 3

Create and write a song about a volcanic eruption that has or will occur.

*There must be a title and author included*

For this option, you can make it up or you can use an actual eruption that occurred.

Information to include and guidelines

- Type of volcano: Shield, Cone, Composite, Dome or Supervolcano

- How the volcano forms: Include: Type of plate boundary, how the lava is generated, (include the role of water and/or pressure), any other information that is relevant

- Describe the active stage of the volcano: Magma and lava type, types of igneous rock formed, type of gas emitted, size of volcano, shape of volcano including slope angle

- Description of the eruption: Size of eruption, VEI scale with description, types of flow created

- Describe the Impact on the Earth: Climate, animals, plants, ect.

- Describe the Impact on humans: Disruption of life, crop failure, ect,

- Magma Type: Water content, silica content, viscosity

List of Volcanoes to choose from:

Krakatau, Indonesia

Krakatau is a volcanic island made out of lave in the Sunda Strait. The island exploded in 1883, it is considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history. The shock wave from the explosion was felt around the world. Nuée ardent flows spread over the Sundra Strait.

Cerro Negro, Nicaragua:

Cerro Negro is Central America’s youngest volcano. It was born on April 1850 and has since been one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. Eruptions from this volcano are part lava, part tephra, with lots of ash sized tephra.

Mauna Kea, Hawaii

Mauna Kea is one of five hotspots volcanoes that form the island of Hawaii. Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Submarine eruption began to build Mauna Kea from the sea floor around 0.8 million years ago. Mauna Kea’s composition is primarily basalt and alkali lava.

Mount Vesuvius, Italy

Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD79 that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. A “ firestorm” of poisonous vapors and molten debris engulfed the surrounding areas suffocating inhabitants. Vesuvius is part of the Campanian volcanic arc.

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

Kilauea is an active volcano in the Hawaiian islands. It is the most recent of a series of volcanoes that have created the Hawaiian archipelago. This volcano is constantly spewing out lava. It has been continuously erupting in the eastern rift- zone sine 1983.

Mount St. Helens, Washington

Mount St. Helens is an active volcano located in Skamania County, Washington. The volcano is located in the Cascade Range and is part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc. The volcano is well known for its ash explosions and extremely fast flows. Its most famous eruption occurred on May 18, 1980. This was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. The plume deposited ash and pumice downwind from the volcano. The mountain has layers of andesite and basalt through which lava has erupted.

Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Cotopaxi has erupted over 50 times, which created the numerous valleys formed by lahars around the volcano. The most violent eruptions in historical times occurred in 1744, 1768, and 1877. The 1877 eruption had flows that descended down all sides of the mountain with lahars traveling more than 100km into the Pacific Ocean and western Amazon basin draining the valley. Cotopaxi lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Paricutin, Mexico

Paricutin is one of the recent volcanoes that has erupted between 1943 and 1952. The volcano began as a fissure in a cornfield. The volcano grew quickly, reaching 5ft after a week. Most of its growth occurred during its first year, while it was still in the explosive phase. Many of the eruptions are violent and explosive. This is the first volcanoes scientist have been able to study a volcano from birth to death.

Tungurahua, Ecuador

Tungurhua is an active volcano located in the Cordillera Central of Ecuador. Volcanic activity restarted in 1999 and is ongoing still. Eruptions are strombolian meaning they are low level eruptions that produce andesite and dacite. All major eruptions have originated from the summit crater and have been accompanied by strong explosions.

Mount Hibok-Hibok

Mount Hibok-Hibok is located on Camiguin Island in the Philippines. It is an active volcano. This volcano has 6 hot springs. Hibok-Hibok has erupted five times in modern history. An observed eruption pattern has been determined by volcanologists it includes a four phase cycle. 1st a short period of emission of steam, 2nd explosions of steam blasts, 3rd eruption of incandescent materials, 4th decrease in steam and ejecta from the crater. Landslides and avalanches are common.
