GRACE HEALS RACISM FROM THE INSIDE

When I was just nineteen, I had a conversion experience. Just one month later I entered a college for the purpose of learning the Bible and theology and ministry. The college was in Bir-mingham, and the time was the mid-sixties. The civil rights movement was underway, and our way of life was changing right before our eyes. There was much resistance.

You know the sad story. People who just wanted to be treated as equals were beaten bloody with billy clubs. The police knocked them down with water from the fire hoses. Trained German Shepherds mercilessly attacked helpless people. Many who had done no wrong except stand up for their own dignity were put in jail. And one Sunday morning on Sixteenth Street, four little girls went to Sunday school and never came back alive, because of a bomb that had been planted in their church.

Looking back at those times, I wish so much that I had been different. After all, I was in Birmingham at the same time, and these events were happening less than two miles away from the place where my Bible lay open on my desk. There is no question in my mind that, considering where I was and what I knew, I was sincerely trying to learn the ways of the Lord. More than ever in my life, I had become focused on wanting to do the right thing.

But I did NOT stand up, and I don’t personally know anybody who did. Not one of our teachers or “ministers of the Word” had anything to say, except to tell us to “stay out of it”, “mind our own business”, and to have nothing to do with these “agitators”

who had come to our city. So our Christian ministers told us to stay away from such “troublemakers.”

I find it strange that I never felt guilty about my non-involvement in this conflict. As years went by, elements of racism continued to be a part of my life, even as I preached sermons and did church work. I sincerely prayed and worked and served, but I never real-ized how hypocritical my life was.

One of the tragedies of human nature is that when we are part of a subculture that thinks a certain way, all of reality is defined within that subculture. Even our conscience can be bent to fit the accepted pattern of thought.

Fast-forward (please!) to a single day when I bought two books that soon changed my entire way of thinking forever!

Little did I know how graceless my soul had been until that day. The two books were not actually books about racism or social issues at all... they were books about the grace of God. One was “The Ragamuffin Gospel” by Brennan Manning. The other book was “What’s So Amazing about Grace?” by Philip Yancey.

I promise you that I did not “enjoy” the books when I first read them. I cried like a baby through every chapter. For the first time in my life I was beginning to see what grace was really about - how extreme, unreasonable, radical, and wonderful it is!

Reading those two books, I finally saw the truth of how unde-serving I was, and am, and always shall be. All of my pride, any

sense of worthiness or righteousness of my own was obliterated forever. I saw myself as so much worse than I had ever imagined that I was, and at the same time I realized that somehow I was loved completely and unconditionally.

I thought upon the truths of radical amazing grace. I found out that even beginning to think upon the truths of grace can lead your mind into areas you have never visited before. You will see things differently, and you will hear a different voice speaking to you.

I began to think back on the years when we white Americans felt some sense of “superiority”, and it sickened me. It literally made me physically ill. Disgusted and ashamed, I prayed for and found forgiveness.

I know that I cannot go back to being the nineteen year old in that Bible College. I can’t go back to the Birmingham of the sixties and try to make a difference. But I can look around me now, and ask for insight into my world today, hoping to not be so blind any more. And perhaps I can find some courage to do something about it.

Not long ago, I participated in a march to honor those who back in the sixties had stood for grace, non-violence, and freedom from oppression. The newspapers reported that I was there to “atone” for my past. They were wrong. I can’t atone for any-thing!

But I can be a different kind of man, if only because of grace.

ThanksgivingSometimes we leave out the main ingredient of prayer, which is thanksgiving. God gave us the recipe. He said. “Be careful for nothing, in other words don’t fret or have anxiety about anything. Cast your cares upon the Lord.” There are times when we go to God with praise and thanksgiving and he answers and meet our need before we get to the requests. When Jesus entered into Peter’s house, he rebuked the fever from his mother-in-law and it left her. That fever just took off when Jesus rebuked it. When we begin to thank and praise God, the old devil can’t stand it and he will run. The praise and thanksgiving is praying. In fact, it is one of the highest forms of prayer. It seems God is very pleased with our thanks. He tells us to offer unto him praise and thanksgiving. If you feel you don’t have anything to thank him for, just offer unto him a sacrifice of praise. When you do this, you will begin to feel his peace, not the peace the world offers but his peace that passes all understanding. Yes, praise and thanksgiving are very important ingredients we are to mix with our prayers and supplications. Don’t leave them out.

A Note From the EditorMy husband and I celebrated our 17th anniversary this past weekend and with each year that clicks on the tick-er, the more accomplished and blessed we both feel. We chose to celebrate our anniversary with a trip to our fa-vorite seafood market with our kids and later enjoyed a seafood feast. After all, our children anchored almost 13 years of the 17 we were celebrating.

We had a chance to reflect upon the earlier years when young married couples tend to pass from the honey-moon phase and move into becoming young parents. We laughed at the fact that our oldest was finally born during the Alabama vs. Tennessee game in 1999 after about 12 hours of labor and how that game had inter-fered with his birthday parties almost every year since.

We remembered old jobs we loved and loathed, people we met along the way and the travels that took us places most people had never heard of like Nashville, Georgia, for instance. We even talked about spending 17 years of Saturdays together and, after doing some quick math, realized that was actually 884 Saturdays of off days and family time.

As we drift from young couple to mature couple I’ve come to realize that the perfect formula for a lasting marriage is more good times than tough times and being able to slough off adversity and cure every disagreement with laughter. Here’s to all the couples out there nearing and entering their double-digit anniversaries. You’ve weath-ered the toughest years and the best is yet to come!

Wishing everyone a wonderful week,Audrey Chambers

¥ When making pastry, start with cold ingredients; when making cakes and cookies, the ingredients should be room temperature. If you stick with this rule, you’ll have lovely, flaky pastry and

warm, fluffy cake!

¥ “Keep rolls or breads warm at the table with this OLD trick: Line your bread basket with foil, shiny side out. Drape a towel over that, and snug the bread inside.” -- G.R. in Wisconsin

¥ Want to know the secret to great biscuits? Handle the dough gently. The more you mess with it, the tougher the biscuits. If you use a cutter, dip it in water for each press, and DON’T twist: You’ll create a seal on the edges that will hinder the biscuit from rising, making it denser.

¥ “Got a dome on your cake? Measure your ingredients well. Use a pan that is big enough. And if all else fails, use a thermometer to gauge whether your oven is too hot. These things more than any others will make a cake pop up in the center.” -- E.A. in Mississippi

¥ Here’s a fun way to spend a weekend morning: Making pancakes or waffles! Make a double (or triple, or more) batch, and make several varieties -- blueberries, choco-late chips, bananas, walnuts, strawberry, even pumpkin! Lay them out in layers and let cool. Stack separated with freezer paper in the freezer. They can be microwaved or toasted in minutes for an easy weekday breakfast.

¥ Self-rising flour or all-purpose? There’s actually a pret-ty easy way to tell which is which. Self-rising flour has baking soda added to it, which tastes salty. If you’re fac-ing a canister of flour and the recipe calls for all-purpose, give it a taste. If it’s self-rising, omit any baking soda added to your recipe.

After a hearty meal in one of Baldwin County ’s fine eating establishments, members of the Gofer Camping Club paid a visit to the Baldwin County Heritage Museum , Friday afternoon. The group enjoyed a tour of the museum with host Joe Salzmann. Mr. Salzmann is a dedicated vol-unteer and has been part of the BCHM since the first discussion to form the organization. BCHM is open Wed-Sat 10am-3pm. Admission is Free. Located at 25521 US Hwy 98 E in Elberta , AL 36530 . Contact for more information 251-986-8375 or email [email protected]. Like BCHM on Facebook.
