This music is known bydifferent names in different states,such as Dang in Gujurat, MariaKhanda in Madhya Pradesh andToda in South India. There is astory in the region of Digapahandiof Ganjam Dist. During the stayof Ramachandra at Mahendragiri,the tribal people of hill welcomedRamachandra by playing DhumpaMusic.

Hence it is presumedDhumpa is a primitive musicalinstrument, which peopleassociate with the legend. JodiSanka (Double Conch) is a uniquepresentation of rural music having

musical instruments and Dance incombined form. While blowingthe conch the artists display anastonishing harmony between thephysical movements. The art ismartial, spirit is rustic andcostumes are colorful. The otheraccompanying instruments used inthis dance are Dholo, Changuand mahuri.

The musical tunes are basedon traditional songs like champuand chandas. Ranapa literallymeans a stilt. Therefore thedance on the stilts is known asRanapa Nata.

This dance form wasprevalent among the Cow-herdCommunities of South Odisha.Young boys of the communityused to perform this dance duringtheir festivals of Dola Yatra andGiri-Gobardhan Puja. There wasno percussion or any otherinstruments except Dhola and

Mahuri. They were simply singingsongs relating to Krishna’s boyhood life and dancing to therhythm of Bajeni made of iron,which produces a tingling sound.

During15" Century, when the SanskritScholars were reluctant to giverecognition to Odiya Language /literate, at that particular juncturea bright person had appeared inthe Utkal Lyrical Horizon.

He was Jagannath Dashwho was the composer ofOdiya great epic Mahabhagabat.He had taken birth in 1490 AD atKapilaswar Village, to the parentsPurana Panda Bhagaban Dash

and Padmabati. “Bhagabata”written in Nabakhari Chhanda(Nine Letter rhyme) is quite well-known in every Odiya/ Oriyahousehold. Towards the end of15th century, Shri Chaitany Devahad met him near the banyan tree(Batabrukhya) inside theJagannath Temple.
