The musical tunes are basedon traditional songs like champuand chandas. Ranapa literallymeans a stilt. Therefore thedance on the stilts is known asRanapa Nata.
This dance form wasprevalent among the Cow-herdCommunities of South Odisha.Young boys of the communityused to perform this dance duringtheir festivals of Dola Yatra andGiri-Gobardhan Puja. There wasno percussion or any otherinstruments except Dhola and

and Padmabati. “Bhagabata”written in Nabakhari Chhanda(Nine Letter rhyme) is quite well-known in every Odiya/ Oriyahousehold. Towards the end of15th century, Shri Chaitany Devahad met him near the banyan tree(Batabrukhya) inside theJagannath Temple.
