Bhavan’s Bengaluru Kendra

has plunged into a range ofactivities these past few years,fanning out even beyond theborders of Karnataka, to set itscultural footprint as far as theNortheast. Yet the Kendra haskept going with its well entrenchedfocus areas with equal interest,

classical music and dance classesbeing one among them.

Journalism and Samskritamclasses, once synonymous withthe Kendra itself, will bere-introduced from this month,re-emphasising the dynamics ofBhavan’s thrust areas.

Traversing from East toWest in its belief of spreadingthe fragrance of India globallywhile welcoming the best fromthe West, western music classeswill be introduced this month,

bringing a much-needed exposureto this genre of classical music toyoungsters who are learningIndian classical music atBhavan. Opening up a learningopportunity to those interestedin its western counterpart will bea major fallout of these newclasses.

Violin, keyboard, guitar andflute will be taught for the three-year diploma course in westernmusic, the comprehensive syllabuslaying equal emphasis on theory.

The certificate course inSamskritam will be conductedby Vyoma Linguistic LabsFoundation, classes for which willbe held at the Bhavan premises.

With the commencement ofthe post-graduate diploma coursein journalism, straddling bothKannada and English, mediastudies will make a re-entryinto Bhavan.

The course, with journalistSri N. S. Sridhara Murthy as

coordinator, will coversix areas of study,hands on trainingforming an importantpart of the curriculum.

Bhagavad Gita is not

confined to any caste or religion,but is a practical guide to facethe vicissitudes of life and emergeunscathed, Sri Jayendraswamijiof Kailash Ashram said.

Delivering the convocationaddress at the BVB-SandipaniGurukula Bhagavad Gita diplomacertificate distribution function atthe Bhavan on Sept. 18, theSwamiji said the Gita was the onlywork in world literature whichlooked at human life in all itsdimensions, offering solace andsolution that was at once universaland tailored to individual needs.

“Mahakavyas”, roughlytranslated as classics in thewestern context, remains a vibrantbody of work even today,

with a sizeable readership,understanding, and popularityin India, whereas western classicshave been forgotten and castaside.

This speaks of the utilityvalue, timeless and universalappeal of ancient Indian epics,enhanced by the literary,spiritual, scientific, metaphysical,and psychological contentand sense in them, he said.

The inaugural of the birth

centenary celebrations of M. S.Subbulakshmi was celebrated byBhavan along with the IndiraGandhi National Centre for theArts (IGNCA) with a musicaltribute by Dr. Deepti Navaratna,Executive Director, IGNCA,on Sept. 16.

The event assumed specialsignificance with the Chief Guest,Sri H. N. Ananth Kumar, Ministerfor Chemicals, Fertilizers andParliamentary Affairs announcing adonation of Rs. five crores by theUnion Ministry of Culture for theauditorium coming up in memoryof MS at the IGNCA premises.

“The building, a tribute byKarnataka for the great musician

and humanitarian, must becompleted this year and bethrown open by the time thecentenary year of MS culminates”,he said.

“Sadbhakti”, the musicaltribute, featured songs of MSin various Indian languages.

Aptly, a doll show,depicting the central scene of“Putra Kameshti Yaga” will beon from Oct. 1 to Oct. 10,the speciality being thedramatization of the scene withlife-size dolls, complete withglossy attire and royal backdrop.

among others The Putra KameshtiYaga scene captures theappearance of Agni to grant aboon to the childless Dasharatha.

The episode has beenconceptualized with minutedetailing, Smt. Anu stitching thecostumes herself, using pure silkand Kanjeevaram fabrics, flowingtissue and brocade forming thebackdrop for the tableau, re-painting of the faces of the 200-year-old dolls which is a familyheirloom, and intricate hairdos;only the jewellery has beensourced from outside. This truework of love is in the Dasara spiritof continuing a hoary tradition.

The exhibition will beinaugurated on Oct. 1 at 5 pm,and is on between 10 am and 6pm every day.

BVB and Nupura School ofBharatanatyam jointly presentNitya Nritya 2016, a music anddance festival with an interestingacademic component, at Bhavan,on Oct 1 and Oct. 2.
