He further added that he was not in a position to discuss the matter. Alm ost a t o n c e , t h e y quarrel and he says h e’s going to have the marriage annulled. Brokenhearted, she goes to New York hoping to become a model. She enrolls in a training school and lives with a model named Dot Turner. Phil conies to town and proves to be a friend of Dot's, but Valerie mhnages to avoid him and keeps quiet about the r m arriage. Meanwhiie, she has fallen in love with Terry Sullivan, reporter, b u t D o t c la im s he’s crazy about Storm Kane, actress. D ot’s friend Duke Maxwell, orchestra le a d e r , w h o se father heads an advertising agency, becom es interested in Valerie and offers to try to get her a job w hich he originally promised to Dot. Valerie hesitates about accepting favors from him and feels she should take a chance on landing a job through a style show to be staged at the end of her training course. However, on the day before the show he persuades her to pose for some trial photographs.

CHAPTER XXVII ^/A L E R IE , e n te r in g th e

apartment, found Dot' in lounging pajamas with her blonde hair wound on curlers She was absorbed in doing her naiis.

“Going out?” Valerie asked. “Yeah — Phil Prescott’s arriving

in town this evening. You remember I told you that his mother was coming on for your show tomorrow. 'Well, Phil’s coming with her.”

Valerie’s hearo sank. “You mean he—he’ll be at the show?”

Dot looked up quickly. “No—he’s got a clr-te with me tomorrow afternoon. Still afraid of running into him? Look here, why are you so anxious to avoid that guy?”

“I told you once. I don’t want the girls back at Prescott’s to know what I’m doing until I make good.”

“How about his mother? She’ll Bee you.”

“She — she doesn’t know me — won’t recognize me,” Valerie answered, though she wondered apprehensively whether she could depend on this.

Dot’s eyes narrowed. “Your story Bounds pretty wTeak to me. I’ll bet you knew Phil better than you’ve admitted. That’s why you want to avoid him. Come on—confess!”

Valerie flushed. “Don’t be silly! I often saw him passing through the store, and he sometimes stopped at my counter. You wouldn’t call that knowing him well.”

Dot looked unconvinced. “Good looker, isn’t he?” she said casually.

“If you like that blond type.” “Terry’s blond.”Valerie swrung around. “Why do

you say that?”“Because you seem to like his

type. In fact, you’re gone on him— any fool can see that. If Terry him- Belf hasn’t, it’s because he can’t see any one but Storm Kane.”

VALERIE turned away, wishing Dot would hush. She felt com

pletely unstrung. First, there had been the long, tiring rehearsal for the show, then the emotional upheaval over Duke. Now, of all times, Dot had to cross-question her about Phil Prescott and, on top of that, to taunt her about Terry and insist again that he was crazy about Btorm Kane.

Dot rose languidly and admired one ruby-tipped hand.

“Got a new nail polish. Like it?” “You can wear those violent

Shades,” Valerie said shortly. “They look horrid on me.”

“Vulgar. Isn’t that what you mean?”

“Oh, I don’t mean anything, Dot!” Valerie exclaimed, in exasperation. “Why quarrel?”

Dot shrugged elaborately. “Am 1 quarreling? Did I quarrel when you snatched Duke Maxwell right from under my nose — s p o i l e d my

cnances at that Nomad job with your big blue eyes and innocent manner? Sometimes I w o n d e r whether you’re as innocent as yoii seem. You certainly - pulled a fast one on me!”

She moved toward her room, then turned and leaned against the door frame.

“But listen—let me tell yousome- thing. Duke made a fool of me with his promises, and he can make a fool of you. He can’t do anything for you. For all his big talk, his father wouldn’t listen to his ideas. Maybe he’s told you he can get you that Nomad job, but do you want to know what I heard today from a good authority? Do you want to know who’s going to pose for those ads?” Dots paused, then answered her own question triumphantly. “Storm Kane! She’s going to be the Nomad girl!”

Valerie suspected that Dot was simply being spiteful—trying to retaliate for the loss of Duke. Nevertheless, she wondered whether this news was true, whether Duke had less influence than he claimed.

“Storm Kane?” she repeated.“You heard me! And that re

minds me to tell you something else for your own good. I might have told you before, but I hadn’t the heart. Now, I think it’s time you were told. Know why Terry took a shine to you and started playing around with you?”

Valerie didn’t answer. What was Dot going to say now? She felt she couldn’t stand much more of this sort of talk.

HE WANTED to get the low- down on a small-town girl in

a big city—wanted to use you in his play!”

Valerie’s eyes widened. “Plis—his what?”

“His play—Angel Face! The one that’s now making a hit for Storm Kane. He wrote it under a pseudonym.”

Valerie sank down on the couch. Terry’s play! So that’s why he wanted it to have a long run! But was that the only reason? Had he— had he written it especially for Storm?

“Terry has always wanted to write a play,” Dot went on. “Back in the days when he and my ex- husband palled around together, he was always talking about writing one. Now he’s done it. And now you know the reason for his interest in you. He modeled his heroine after you.”

Valerie straightened up. “If he did, I’m glad I could be of some use to him,” she said stiffly. “I don’t know why you should think I’d mind. Terry has been a good friend and I’m grateful to him for his kindness but, aside from that, he means nothing to me. All that matters to me right now is my career— or what I hope will be a career.”

“Well, don’t count on Duke Maxwell to start you on it. He’ll do for . you what he did for me—nothing!”

“I have no intention of counting on him,” Valerie snapped. “If I can’t win out on my own, I’ll—I’ll—well, I’ll go back to working as a store clerk! I don’t need pull to sell zippers and buttons!”

Dot eyed her shrewdly. “Maybe I’ve shot my mouth off too much— or maybe I haven’t. I just didn’i want you to make a sap of yourself —over either Terry or Duke.” She turned into her room.

After she was gone, Valerie went to a window and stood staring out into the darkness. What Dot had said about Duke didn’t matter. But Terry . . . Terry. . . .

Was it true that he had been kind to her only for a selfish purpose? She couldn’t bear the thought, but she had a terrible feeling that Dot was right.

She had hoped that the pin he gave her for Christmas meant that he loved her as she loved him. but now . . . now. . . . Perhaps it was only his way of thanking her for serving unwittingly as a model for his play heroine. . . .

AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIAT I O N PRESSES FOR STATE

LAW CHANGES

DETROIT, May 22—More than 20 states are considering constitutional amendements to prevent use of motor vehicle taxes for anything except road purposes, the American Automobile Association reports.

Eleven states have adopted similar amendments “by large majorities” in previous elections, the AAA said.

Road purposes should be interpreted to include administration, construction, reconstruction, maintenance, highway safety and supervision activities, and protection and development of areas adjoining the right-of-ways, the AAA believes.

T hree-Point ProgramThe association is seeking to de

velop legislative programs to protect the nation’s roadsides in the interest of health, safety and appearance.

It suggests a method of roadside “zoning” by state planning commissions or highway commissioners which would authorize establishments which would authorize establishment of “highway protective strips’ not more than 1,000 feet wide on each side of the highway. After public hearings the commission would separate the strips into districts such as residential, roadside service, business, industrial, etc.

/Appeal Would B e ProvidedThe commission would be au

thorized to regulate location and the uses of buildings and land within the protective strips. Any person aggrieved by such action might appeal to the courtsi.

Many states also are proposing new system s of license and registration fees. California legislators, for instance, would impose an annual tax of 1 3-4 per cent of the actual market value of the vehicle, in lieu of all other taxes. Three per cent of the proceeds would go for administration, an unspecified sum to meet five outstanding bond issues, and of the re-

PEACE-TIM E TEST IS MADE IN CENTER BUILT FOR

EVACUEES

NEW MILFORD, Conn. — Although rumblings of war still have been confined to the Old World, the question of evacuation of children from New York—as was done in London—has received consideration here.

One such center, the first in the country, has been constructed and may serve as a model for others should the necessity arise.

This model evacuation camp, located in the foothills of the Berkshire Hills in New Milford, already has undergone a peacetime test, with 96 New York sub- debs portraying t h e r o l e s o f “refugees” from war. The girls are students at the Dalton SchooL, Inc., of New York City.

Buildings of Two StoriesThe center was built on top of

Buck’s Rock by the Children’s Foundation, Inc. This is a Connecticut corporation formed last summer by a group of wealthy New York industrialists to extend financial and educational assistance to child refugees. Housing for 125 children and 15 adult supervisors is provided for on the 128-acre tract. Three buildings are for sleeping quarters and the fourth contains a social hall and classrooms. All are two stories high. The flat roofs are camouflaged to blend with the terrain. The structures are made frorh redwood with sheet rock insulation.

The “refugees” sleep in compact quarters with two-tiered bunks set in the walls. They are divided into age groups. As each group completes a month’s training at the center it is replaced by another.

One of the funniest of the screwball comedies to come out of Hollywood in recent months is Hal Roach’s latest success, “Road Show,” being screened today only at the Hilo theater.

Shapely Carole Landis heads the cast as the owner of a travelling carnival. Co-starred with her is handsome John Hubbard, as a wealthy playboy who is railroaded into a sanitarium by his jealous fiancee.

There he meets a screwball colonel, played by Adolphe Menjou. Together they escape and join up with Carole’s show. Menjou tells Carole that Hubbard is a former lion tamer and he has to go through with the act even though the very sight of lions makes him tremble with fear.

Charles Butterworth, Patsy Kelly and George E. Stone are seen in comedy roles. The Charioteers, negro stars of Hellzapoppin, sing a group of songs by Hoagy Carmichael.

“Strawberry Blonde,” smash hit comedy starring James Cagney Olivia de Havilland and Rita H ayworth, will be the hit attraction at the Plilo theater Friday and Saturday.

Salley’s trick was to wave a magic wand, cause the rope to disap- ; pear, then reappear in one piece. The spectator with the knife brought a sudden end to the pro- j ceedings when instead of cutting the rope, he cut off the end of one of Salley’s fingers.

Classes in A ny CrisisAn important aspect of the cen-

l ter is the fact that it is planned ; to permit the continuance of edu- i cation even during an emergency. Classes will continue no matter

■ how grave outside circumstances J may become. Directing the educational program is Miss Helen Park- hurst, head of the Dalton Schools, Inc., and also head of the International Council of Education.

Miss Parkhurst emphasized the foundation’s belief that “education especially during times of emotional stress, is almost as important to a child as clothing, shelter, or food.”

The center will not remain idle i during the summer. It will be | turned over to English evacuees at 1 present living with “foster parents,” so that they may spend a summer with children of their own nationality. They will return to these “foster” homes next fall.

Kobata-Nakaji Cops Doubles Tennis Title

The Kobata-Nakaji combination proved too strong for veteran Ta- kahashi-Fukuda as the former easily copped the doubles crown yesterday at the municipal courts, 6- 0, 6-1, 6-4.

Steady playing by Kobata-Nakaji and the erratic miscues of the losers were responsible for the big first two set matches. However, Takahashi-Fukuda began playing heads up ball in the final match but couldn’t overcome the powerful driving and slamming of the victors.

PLAY NATIVES IN FIRST GAME IN SENIOR LOOPLEAGUE LEADING CRESCENTS

TAKE ON PIRATES IN NIGHTCAP

M anager Shlzuto K iyosaki’s Japanese AC w ill try to break into the win column th is Sunday in the Hilo Senior baseball league a t the expense of Herb

ert Watson’s All-Hawaiians when they meet in the first game at the Hoolulu park.

In the featured game of the day Manager Manuel Ignacio’s league- leading Crescents will stake their clean slate against Nobu Maruya- ma’s scrappy Waiakea Pirates lads. Both of these games are expected to he close ones with the Natives and Turks slightly favored over their respective opponents.

With three defeats already chalked up against them, another setback now will practically eliminate the Japanese out of the title picture, so the Nips just got to win this Sunday’s tussle. A JAC’s win will pull the Natives down to cellar position with the former, while a Hawaiian’s win will keep the Natives very much in the title chase.

With three victories already under his belt, two shutouts, Lefty Perreira, ace hurler of the Crescents, will try to make it four straight when he starts against the up-and-coming Pirates team.

At present, Crescents are leading the league with three victories in as many starts followed by Pirates with a won two lost one mark. A Crescents’ win will give the Turks a two full game lead over the other teams, while on the other hand a Pirates’ win will deadlock the league leadership between the two teams.

Likely mound starter for Pirates will be Dopey Matsumoto, youthful sensation of the season, or veteran Francis Nunes. Both are capable hurlers with Francis Nunes yet to show his wares this season. Matsumoto is credited with both of Pirates victories.

CLOSE TILTS IN PAHOA LOOP

WINNER TO PLAY HIW FOR SECOND ROUND TITLE;

BIZ GAME SLATED

In the first of the play-off matches for the second round title of the HRC commercial softball league, Jimmy Bell’s Waiakea Mill Redshirts are slated to meet Sonny Henderson’s Helco’s this after- | noon at 4:30 p. m. at Mooheau Park.

These two teams and Iron Works finished in a triple tie for j the second series flag in one of the closest finishes seen hereabouts. The winner of today’s game will play Iron Works for the title tomorrow. And should Waiakea Mill or Iron Works cop the second round flag, it will have to play Helco’s (first round champs) in a two out of three series for the league championship.

Up at Kaumana Tax Office, coleader of the business men’s league, is scheduled to meet a very stiff test in Von Hamm. Unbeaten till Tuesday ,the Taxmen dropped their first contest to Hilo Motors that day.MAJOR LEAGUE
