Pit Bulls

One of America's Most Popular Breeds

Pit Bulls are wiggly, cuddly, affectionate dogs; they like to remind you regularly of how they feel about you, and in general this means a lot of tail wagging and kissing. The Pit Bull’s innate love of people is part of his heritage. In 19th century England the Pit Bull, known as the Stafford, was created from Bulldog and terrier breeds and specifically bred

to not be aggressive toward people.

Today the Pit Bull is prized for his courage, intellect, and especially for his love of friends and family. Long before they were bred and used for the wrong reasons, Pit Bulls were family dogs as this is a breed with a particular fondness for children. In England the Pit Bull or Stafford is affectionately called “the nanny dog” for his desire to play with and watch over children. Remember Petey, the mascot pup with the black eye patch in "The Little Rascals"? Petey was a Pit Bull; as was Tige in the Buster Brown shoe advertisements. Currently, Champion, a three-legged pit bull, is the newest character on the TV series, Parks and Recreation.

The “Pit Bull” isn’t an actual breed at all, but a term that current American culture uses to describe many large/stocky dogs that have a big head, cropped ears, brindle coat or eye patch. The true breeds most commonly labeled as Pit Bulls are American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Sadly,

because of rampant misinformation and fear caused by the actions of criminally negligent breeders and owners, the Pit Bull tops the list of the most euthanized pet; while at the same time, millions of Pit Bulls are living peacefully as adored family pets in homes throughout the country.

Pit Bulls always test high as one of the most stable breeds of dogs in the country. Pit Bulls have temperaments

similar to Golden Retrievers, Beagles or other popular dogs. In a recent study of 122 dog breeds, Pit Bulls achieved a passing rate of 83.9%; better than Beagles - 78.2%, and Golden Retrievers - 83.2%. The American Temperament Test Society of the United States, rates Pit Bulls as one of the top five most stable dogs. Because of this, they are extremely patient and tolerant of children.

Pit Bulls are athletic and love to get out and play. It’s important to remember

that Pit Bulls are terriers – they’re energetic and ready to go from zero to full throttle in a second. They’re a happy-go-lucky breed and great to come home to. Informed, experienced owners who enjoy a wide variety of activities often love the athletic, nimble Pit Bull.

Pit Bulls are easy to train. The highly intelligent Pit Bull, like all

dogs, wants an in-charge owner who can make and enforce rules, provide socialization, and basic obedience training. Pit Bulls are extremely easy to train. Because they are so sensitive to your feelings, verbal training comes easily with this breed. Pit Bulls want to please you. They can be as active as you want to be, no matter what you’re doing.

Pit Bulls can live with other dogs and/or cats. Pit Bulls

coexist comfortably with other pets when raised with them in a properly supervised household. With proper training, handling, and supervision your Pit Bull can learn to live peacefully in the company of other dogs and often cats as well.

Pit Bulls are great family dogs. Pit bulls thrive on interaction

with their family and will languish if shut away. They love their owners and are a shadow around the house. They crave attention and companionship and have a great zest for life. Pit Bulls are the equivalent of people who are always happy.

No other breed in history has been so misunderstood as long or as often as the Pit Bull. The reality is that Pit Bulls are intelligent, loyal and loving companions. All they ask is that we return their love in a secure and forever home.

Lacey

We are so happy with our choice

of kitty from your shelter. It's been so relaxing and good all-around for our home and family. All our

friends love her so much and we tell them to see your facility and chose one for themselves. Izzie is

the best behaved and lovable cat we have ever seen. Thank you so

much for helping us make this choice. We only wish her previous

owner could know how we love her and take care of her. Thank you, The Ouimet's

I haven’t seen you folks since

Sep 7, 2013. Seems like it was yesterday when you gave me a new dad and life. I know he has

never been so happy! He is always looking at me with a smile. I think my nick name is “I

Love You”. We have enclosed a few $ so you can feed my friends that have not found a family to love.

Happy New Year! Love ya all, Baby Blue The Aussie

Baby Blue

Hello to our friends at

The Animal League. We thought we would check in with you to let

you know we are doing fine. It’s our second Christmas with our

Mom (Judy) & Dad (Allen). It’s been another year of getting to know each other. I (AJ), the solid black cat, am getting to be more of a Lover. I’m enjoying the attention I get, and I show my appreciation

by bumping my head into my mom’s body. Daddy-o is very jealous, he wants all the attention and comes up between Mom and me to get it. And boy can he TALK!!!! Thanks again for all the wonderful

care you gave us. We will never forget it. AJ and Daddy-O Greger

Molly We adopted Molly on August 12, 2013. She

was diagnosed with stomatitis and Dr. Robinson was so wonderful to help her with medication. She is doing great and we

love her so much! Thank you! She is a very pampered cat: grooming her every day and keeping her gums cleaned.

God Bless your organization! Holly & Ken Crombie

AJ & Daddy-O

Thank you for this

incredible friendship!

Chuck Wheelock

This is the first time I ever adopted

from an animal league and I got lucky. Lacey is so nice, well-behaved, and for an 8 year old girl, smart and very

protective. She brings joy to this senior’s eyes! Best, Marla Dick

This is Spicy. We adopted her Dec 14, 2013. She is a very happy and spoiled kitty that brings lots of laughter and love to our home. She loves belly rubs. Thank You! Sharon and Hank Miller

Thought I’d send some photos

of Winky (Sasha) and my daughter in their Halloween costumes. She’s a great doggy.

We love her so much. Jagoda Piotrowski

Winky

We truly enjoy and love Sadie so

much. She walks me seven miles every other day. She is very protective of me. Thank you again for your work

with the animals and caring so people like us could have Sadie. We love her so much.

Diva Dinah

Here at TALGV, we really do treat our cats like royalty.

Dinah loves her new bedroom furniture. TALGV volunteer,

Cherie, did a wonderful job! The cat magazines on Dinah's

dresser and in the bookcase are “Catsmopolitan” and

“Vanity Fur”. There is even a tribute to her late friend,

Mazi, in her bookcase and Dinah has a picture of herself on her dresser. Stop by any day between 10AM and 2PM to

meet Dinah and all her wonderful friends.

Dinah wants everyone to know that copies of her now

famous cookbook are still available for $10 each.

KITTY COMFORTERS

Dear Animal League,

We are pleased to donate 15 cat blankets

to your worthy organization. Many of us are pet owners so this community project was particularly heartwarming.

Our hope is that the cats find comfort in

these blankets and their new owners find joy in owning a pet.

Strings and Things Members, Flowing Wells Library

Pat Byers and Artie Collins, two

of TALGV‘s long-serving coordinators and members of

the Board of Directors have r e c e n t l y r e t i r e d . P a t remembers that when she

began volunteering in January 2004 the pet population consisted of one cat, and the

volunteers were sometimes told to go home early because

there was no work for them. That soon changed and Pat

became a Pet Pal Coordinator for both the cats and dogs

in the original kennel wing behind the Attic.

Several years later when Artie arrived, cat and dog care

had been separated, and before long she became a Cat Care Coordinator and then the first Point Person for all of

the Cat Care Coordinators.

Pat Byers

Pat served on the Board of Directors from 2005 – 2008,

and Artie from 2006 -2011. Pat was very instrumental in the decision to expand and the subsequent planning for

the dog wing which opened in 2008. Artie, in turn, was integrally involved in the planning of the cat wing which opened in 2013.

Artie has moved to Oregon to live with a daughter, but you can see

Pat each week as she comes in to keep in touch with her friends

and spend time socializing the cats.

Pat Byers and Artie Collins will always be remembered and appreciated for their caring and

the major contributions they made to the growth and direction

of TALGV. Artie Collins

Every gift, large or small, helps our

animals. Here are some examples of

what every dollar can do:

At TALGV, “no-kill” is not enough.

We are working every day to achieve our goal,

a community where no cat or dog is without a loving home.

With the help of our many volunteers, supporters and friends,

in 2014 TALGV:

Took in 370 cats and 604 dogs

Found homes for 363 cats and 518 dogs

Reunited 12 cats and 62 dogs with their owners

Spent $299,225 on medical care for sick and injured cats and dogs

Spent $113,440 to spay and neuter pets in our Outreach Program

Had 525 volunteers who worked a total of 111,700 hours

A Home for Every Pet

$20 pays for vaccines for one cat or dog per year.

$30 pays for food for one cat

or dog for a month.

$50 pays for bottle feeding an

orphaned kitten or puppy.

$100 pays for spaying or

neutering to prevent

unwanted litters.
