The vision of Christ Church is to be recognized as a joyful, spirit-filled community of apostles reaching out and

transforming lives for Christ.

Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3.18

For 150 years, Christ Church has proclaimed the Gospel, pastored people in need, and

equipped the saints to grow in the knowledge and love of the Lord.

Over the past few years, the footprint and reach of our ministry has grown. We worship and

pray and study and fellowship and serve every week in downtown Tyler and at our new

campus on Jacksonville Highway. This past year, we celebrated two children’s Christmas

pageants and two Vacation Bible Schools, with record attendance at both. This past month,

four young men who entered into the life of Christ Church through our college ministry

program left East Texas for Durham, Toronto, and Nashotah, respectively, to train in

seminary for the priesthood.

Christ Church offers scores of wonderful ministries for children, youth, and adults of all ages

which help us and others to grow in Him!

This is an extraordinary season in the life of our congregation. It is made possible by the

gracious favor of God and the generous stewardship of time, talents, and treasure by people

like you and families like yours. Indeed, our faithful stewardship is evidence of our growth as

Christians.

Commitment Sunday is October 27. On that day, every family in our congregation will make

a pledge to support the ministries of our church in the coming year.

I invite you to join me, and prayerfully make a commitment of your time and money to

advance the Gospel through Christ Church in 2020. With God’s help and your strong

participation, we will continue to impact lives with the love of the Lord through the ministry

of Christ Church.

Gratefully yours in Christ Jesus,

Newcomer Ministry: Update 2019

It has been about three years now since one particular angel, a dear saint

named Mary Ruth Greenwell, departed Christ Church (and Tyler) and

relocated to the greater Houston area in order to be closer to family. I will

never tire of hearing person after person tell stories about Mary Ruth,

about how her love and her personal touch were used by God to woo them

& bring them into Christ Church. And yet, as crucial and fundamental as

those personal touches such as handwritten notes, conversations in the

parking lot, and meals together are, they are just one piece of what it takes

for a church (especially an Episcopal parish) successfully to attract and

incorporate into the Body those from outside the tradition.

The additional piece of the puzzle is a process which allows the church

effectively to communicate with newcomers in an organized manner, so

that individuals and families do not fall through the cracks. If you look at

how many newcomers have visited Christ Church (both campuses) over the

past three years, it is kind of staggering. There are hundreds! In the past

two years alone over 125 adults have visited our “Luncheons with the

Rector.” That is a crazy large number! And yet, when it comes to following

up with those folks—learning about their needs, expectations, gifts, etc.

and connecting then with the appropriate parts of the body (leaders,

groups, ministries), we have struggled to do this effectively.

I’m so thankful that, right now, we really are “turning a corner.” Thanks to

better organization on the ground as well as a new software tool we are

beginning to implement, we are, right now, beginning to implement new

procedures on both campuses which will get us to where we need to be. If

you were “checked in” at our check in booth by our Newcomer folks at

Fiesta Sunday, you’ve gotten a taste of where we are going. But that’s just

the tip of the iceberg. (And if you’ve seen our beautiful and smart “Bags of

Grace” you’ve also gotten a sneak peek of the good stuff that’s coming

down the pike!) I’m hopeful that, when a visitor enters our doors, for them

to be quickly connected deeply to our church (or at least to know clearly

what that would look like) will no longer be the exception. It will now be

the rule!

Christina Harmon, our assistant organist, of seven years, finished her last Sunday with us on

September 15. She accepted a position as organist at St. Martha Catholic Church in Kingwood, TX.

She will be remembered for her many contributions to our music ministry. She provided creative

accompaniments to our hymn singing as well as provided stellar voluntaries each and every Sunday.

She always worked tirelessly with instrumentalists that would play here at Christ Church with

rehearsing and arranging for them. As well as a fine organist she was also a fine composer with

compositions for brass and organ as well as other instruments. We will miss her creative spirit and

wish her the very best as she begins at St. Martha.

We welcome, Ian Aipperspach, as interim organist. He serves as an Instructor of Music Theory, Handbell Choir Director, and

Collaborative Artist for East Texas Baptist University. He holds a doctorate in Choral Conducting from Texas Tech University and a

masters in Organ Performance from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. As a collaborative artist, solo performer, and

conductor, he has performed across the United States, Australia, Northern Ireland, and Italy. Aipperspach is a leading scholar on

19th Century Moravian Music and an avid conductor of musical theatre.

Each Sunday, the flowers that adorn our Altar are given by members of the congregation in memory of loved ones or in thanksgiving for God's blessings. Beautiful flowers contribute to our praise and worship of our Lord and remind us of the beauty of God's creation. Many open dates are available to provide flowers for Sunday services. If desired, one may share a Sunday with another person or family. Please call Marilyn Luckett (903-561-8785 or 903-283-8546) if you are willing to assist in this important aspect of our parish life.
