For India, to overcome its poverty, to enhance itsinfrastructure and to convert its population growth todemographic dividend, the route to prosperity is research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The economy in this century is mostly driven byknowledge and knowledge driven institutions and industries. The emphasis is on sustainable development. Innovation isthe essence.

If the 20th century was an industrial economy, the 21st

century is a “knowledge economy”. In the previous century, natural resources defined power, today knowledge is thepower. Universities will be the centres of this knowledgepower.

Earlier hierarchy was the model; today synergy is theneed. Universities must enable interactions between themultiple disciplines, different departments and synergize theactions. Earlier managers commanded and controlled; todayleaders empower and coach.

Earlier, shareholders came first; today customerscame first.

Earlier employers took order; today teams makedecisions. Universities need to enable the team work andteam spirit.

Earlier seniority signified status; today creativity drivesstatus. University is the breeding ground for creativity.

Earlier everyone was a competitor; today every one isa customer or a partner. University needs to train its studentsto be true innovators and entrepreneurs.

For success in our mission of integrated developmentof the nation, we need a large number of creative leaders.Creative leadership means exercising the vision to changethe traditional role from commander to coach, manager tomentor, from director to delegator and from one whodemands respect to one who facilitates self respect.

Universities will have to keep learning about creationof knowledge, its dissemination, its application and providingaccess to knowledge. Production of knowledge andexcellence is directly related to research. Being recognizedas centre of excellence and producer of knowledge, researchhas to be one of the primary agendas of the university. Thereis a need to strike a balance between research and teachingas one strengthens the other.

The Chief Guest of theConvocation Dr. Kota Harinarayanaduring his remarkable career, workedin premier institutions like HindustanAeronautics Ltd., the DRDO, CSIRetc.

The following are the excerptsfrom his Convocation address.
