University of California, Santa Barbara, CA. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1972. After 13 years in the research area at Bell Laboratories, he joined UC-Santa Barbara in 1984, where he now holds appointments in Materials and Electrical & Computer Engineering, and is Director of the Optoelectronics Technology Center. In 1990 he co-founded Optical Concepts, later acquired as Gore Photonics, to develop novel VCSEL technology; and in 1998 he co-founded Agility Communications, later acquired by JDSU, to develop widely- tunable integrated transmitters. Professor Coldren has authored or co-authored over 1000 journal and conference papers, 7 book chapters, 1 textbook, and has been issued 63 patents. He has presented dozens of invited and plenary talks at major conferences, he is a Fellow of the IEEE, OSA, and IEE, the recipient of the 2004 John Tyndall and 2009 Aron Kressel Awards, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Future Meetings: January 20, 2011 Frank Goss of Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery “Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932) – Luminist, California Plein Air Painter” Lockwood de Forest, one of America’s fine atmospheric painters, took the lessons of the Hudson River school and applied them in his own manner, creating a looser landscape “sketch.” As well as being a painter, de Forest was an interior & building designer and furnishings importer, who had working partnerships with Louis Comfort Tiffany, among others. He was a member of the American National Academy of Art and Design in New York. All tennis players areinvited to participate. Bruce Long advises that thenew ‘Sport Court’ surface on the Shadow Hills courts wasready for play on Monday, 6 December. This new surface isreally beautiful and is reputed to be easier on “old joints”.In the previous edition of Crackers (Vol. LVII No. 11), wereported a new tradition' of 'Breakfast at Cody's' after theMonday Game. Actually, the tennis group meets for breakfastoccasionally (not every Monday). However, there is alongstanding tradition of 'Annual Brunch at la Cumbre'. Thisyear's Brunch at la Cumbre will be at the Country Club at10:30 on Sunday 6th February. The third most-performed opera in the USA, Verditells the story of a courtesan, a Marquis, unrequited love,romantic misunderstandings and, of course, the usual tragicconclusion. Of course we don’t attend opera for the surpriseending; the music is really beautiful.

March 22-23, 2011 Palm Springs Follies and Living Desert TripThere will be an early departure to attend the matinee of thefamous Palm Springs Follies, featuring the “4 Preps”. Thenext morning we will enjoy the included breakfast followed bya shuttle tour of the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. We willreturn to Santa Barbara by late afternoon or early evening onWednesday, March 23. This tour is handicapped friendly.The cost is $375 per couple; This includes the bus driver’s tip,admission tickets to both events, hotel, with breakfast,baggage delivery and refreshments.
