Read carefullybetween the lines of a contract and youwill see room for a relationship. It is thisrelationship that makes us, ideapreneurs,

push the envelope, burn the midnight oil and see beyond the clauses a, b and c. In such

a relationship you’ll find interactions withtrust, transparency and flexibility.

Because, you see, a relationship is notjustabout a first party and a second party

signing a deal on pieces of paper. It’s aboutpeople coming together to create ideas,

value and sometimes, even history.

“The contents of the novel are based on real life situations and experiences of real Ideapreneurs which have been collated in the

Not long ago, the business world was in a state of disarray.

Companies that had stood for years as symbols of stability...

…crumbled overnight.

A global economic crisis had fractured the business world and left it in despair.

Page 5: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

03

But one organisation stood as a beacon of hope.

Emerging from the darkness, it had gone ahead and done the unthinkable.

…was not a ground-breaking gizmo. Or arcane magic.

The answer…

But how? How did HCL improve their CSAT score during such a recession?

if I knew the answer...

I wouldn’t be standing here, pal.

In fact, there was no one ‘answer’.

Page 6: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

There were 96,000.

Eu...

re... ka!

you heard right! the top brass wants you to present

your idea directly to the client!

you’re most welcome. I’m just glad our ideas helped you

turn YOUR business around.

Everyday innovators, they workED for the greater good of their clients.

“Every ‘I’ is an Idea”

Called Ideapreneurs, their culture of Ideapreneurship had spawned a new saying in the corporate jungle:

04

Page 7: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Are you telling me your idea will make us obsolete for

our client?

Sometimes at the cost of HCL’s own business.

But Ideapreneurship meant taking client relationships beyond the contract…

…and that made value-centric innovations more than welcome.

Excellent! Let’s submit it to the Value Portal immediately!

These are the tales of HCL’s best kept secretS.

The tales of Ideapreneurs.

06

To get where you’re going, sometimes you take the safe road, sometimes the road less travelled…

Roads, man. That’s how you move forward.

Page 9: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

And sometimes you’ve just got to make your own. For me, a database professional at HCL, today was one of those ‘make a new road’ kinda days. A road for my customer. As the world’s largest aerospace and defence company, they provide avionics and I.T. systems and services to governmental agencies and aircraft manufacturers.

Pretty much every transport aircraft in the world has some of their aviation electronics systems. cool, huh? But when they hit a roadblock in their path, they came to HCL, the world’s largest Ideapreneurship, for a solution.

07

It’s nice to see you again. Any progress on THE SOLUTION to

our problem?

Page 10: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

That’s what I love about working at HCL. Each and every one here knows the simple truth.

…takes 7 days per query? that’s a lifetime, I tell you! Like travelling

back in the old days!so They use ASCEND to capture

avionics data that gets updated on a database called Objectivity. But querying data from Objectivity…

...is going to leave more than a few jaws hanging!!

I know it looks hard and it’s more than what they asked for, but the end result…

Innovation is not a gimmick of technology or about making it to the front page of the papers..

08

And if we plan on going beyond just managing their product

lifecycle, then that won’t do, Bob. We’ve got to make them fly!

Page 11: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

It’s all about delivering value.

Prem created a new language called AQL and saved his client USD 5.1 mn and countless man hours in just one year.

NEXT: An Ideapreneur saves the day in..

“...It’s just who we are.”

09

Unbelievable! So this is what we’ve been hearing about. HCLites going beyond the contract! I must know,

what DRIVES YOU TO GO SO far ?!

we call it Ascend Query Language or AQL. BY developING a parser to understand the query syntax,

an engine to output query-based data, and a state-of-the-art client u.i., WE’VE reduceD your 7 day

query code process… …to 5 minutes.

Nothing…

Page 12: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

10

Where do great ideas come from?

For me they came from listening.

Redmond, Washington

What’s the matter, sir?Looks like you’ve seen

a ghost!

AHA! But you should know, I’m an Ideapreneur first!

You see, we’re facing a marketing problem. people aren’t using our search engine as

much as we’d hoped. But I guess that’s not your department.

And when your client is a leading software company that provides a wide range of computing products and services, that’s a precious Skill!

Page 13: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

11

Hahaha! Here’s the secret ingredient:I found the recipe

online.

Because often, that’s where the magic happens.

And Ideapreneurs don’t stop listening when they’re off the clock.

Back at HCL

Oh really? Tell me something, how did

you go about finding it online?

don’t worry, This isn’t Mountain View, California. We’re all

about generating value for clients!

A crazy idea, huh?

Alright, super team assemble! A burger-selling sage has put

a crazy idea in my head.

You mean, searching? Easy, I just used the

search bar in….

…into a rockstar!

It’s simple. We’re goingto turn our client’s

search engine…

Awesome, so what’s the big idea?

if you’re sayingthat, it must really

be crazy!

But I hope it’s got value for the client

as well.

This is the best burger ever! If this burger wasa person, I’d shake its hand. Then i’d turn it back into a burger

and eat it.

Page 14: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

But listening alone could only take me so far.

Ok guys, I need that info on our client’s other

products, ASAP!

I can’t believe no one saw this sooner!

So if we just write a simple code to…

Ok, so their search engine only has 20% of the market share while they

lead in computer products and services? hmmm...

If there’s something I learnt from working at HCL, it’s that… You’ve got to connect with your client.

And an environment that supports your passion. You’ve got to have a passion for problems.

I got it!

LATER...

It’s allconnected, guys!

12

Page 15: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

13

there’s an old proverb that says, “One does not simply

accelerate a search engine’s usage”. we’re here to prove

that wrong.

And all the dots are connected...

because, When all the boxes are ticked...

That’s when inspiration strikes.

It’s called a Universal Installer. Almost every PC on the planet has your

software installed. People are using all your products, except this search engine. with a simple piece of code...

That’s where great ideas come from.

Next: a bankable ideapreneur goes beyond the call of duty in…

That’s what we do every day. Good day, sir!

well, This is unexpected! What’ve you got for us?

I’m..wow…That’s brilliant! That’s amazing! That’s….

that’s….

...we can make your search engine the default in all those machines and

their web browsers! In an instant, you’ll be worldwide! Imagine the

clicks you’ll get!

Anupam’s idea generated a business impact of USD 23 mn and 758 mn unique clicks in a single year for the client.

Dublin, ireland

A while back, I used to work at a reputable I.T. company known for their “fun” workplaces.

quitting? why? This is the best place to work.

I’m quitting this job because I’m starting a career. I want a place where I can ALSO do great work.

I joined HCL as a Solution Architect with my specialty being Integration.

I bet I can make a difference here!

My client was a reputed bank in Ireland and I was working on their SEPA Payment Method.

I had heard a lot about Ideapreneurs. I was excited to finally step into the same shoes.

Page 17: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

15

They were in the process of building a complex payment engine. that’s when i sensed an opportunity. Hmmm…When so many users

transfer so much data…

And file transfers are limited to 10mb. We’re expecting customers to send files 50 TIMES THAT SIZE!

AND THEY are worth up to a billion euros. PLUS, iftheir format’s not right,

we get penaliSed! So, What do you think?

...the reasonI joined HCL.

Oh, I mean...Let me come back to you with a solution, sir.

What?

When I analysed their problem, I realiSed that their users all faced common issues of small file size limits, slow validations and…that’s when it struck me…

...There is bound to beconfusion! With so many users

working out of sync, the engine has slowed to a crawl.

Eureka.

Now this was a true challenge! This is exactly...

Page 18: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

The problem lay in the XSDs they were using. So basically, all the files they’re

transferring are in a format called Xml. But the contract of the file composition is made in a second file called an Xsd. A valid xml file is one that complies with the xsd.

And they run into trouble because for each individual type of file,

there is a different xsd being used.

Exactly! I suppose we could just fix their errors as they come along, but…

That woULDN’t give us a goodnight’s sleep! We’ve got to eradicate

this problem completely.

effectively making our service obsolete for the client. AS your manager, i must

say, i’m impressed!

Thank you, sir! we owe it to this enabling environment. At my old workplace, they’d have

confiscated my Segway!

16

Page 19: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

My clients were not expecting a solution so soon…

But as far as I was concerned… ...This is WHAT MADE IT ALL WORTHWHILE.

We call it the SEPA Engine XSD validator. Say goodbye to limited file sizes and

XSD queries.

Fantastic work! You ideapreneurs always

deliver the unexpected!

And I was hungry for more.

Hi mate, how’s it going at HCL? I want to quit my job.

Alan’s idea was implemented and IT created a value worth USD 107,000 for the client.

NEXT: FIND OUT WHAT THE INTREPID IDEAPRENEUR HAS IN STORE IN...

Great! Do you want to start a career?

Hello?

With it in place, only the XSDs that the SEPA Payment Engine uses are

available to validate against. And They’re available on your desktops.

Thank you, sir. But as Ideapreneurs, that’s

our job.

17

Page 20: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Hyderabad, IndiaYou’ve been to multi-brand shopping stores, right? You know, those retail chains which look the same on the inside no matter where you go.

Everything in these shops will be in the same place whether you’re in Hungary or Hyderabad. Even the kiosks, floors and sign boards will be exact.

Chocolateee!

Yes, yes, we’ll get some chocolate. It’s right over here.

Now this holds true for any brand. A uniform look means a better brand impact. Can you imagine the minds at work keeping this up for each outlet?

18

Page 21: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

I started working at HCL back in 2010 on an Americanmultinational e-commerce company aimed at mass retail.

As part of the testing team, it was my job to make sure the client’s website looked the same on all platforms. But then one day…

Can you imagine the number of hours it takes the client?

According to our calculations, THE COST TO THE CLIENT IS around usd

16,000 each year.

…we noticed a major problem.A problem that wasn’t part of our contract.

AND guess what?! it takesthe client 40 hours to test scripts

in 6 browsers per release per store!

But doing the unexpected is what we Ideapreneurs live for!

Hmmm...if there wasonly a way we could get that data by snapping

our fingers!

then Let’s get some coffee and get cracking!

…that’s like aphysical person sitting

behind a row of computers, checking every static and dynamic page FOR every

browser!

A snap! Of course...hey guys, I thinkwe might be on tosomething here!

19

Page 22: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

I knew that a solution, while positively affecting our workflow, could also create savings for the client. savings they could use for their growth.

I got it! What if we enable Selenium, the web browser

automation software, to take screen shots of static and

dynamic URLs automatically.

To put it simply, the utility opens and captures the

screen shots of the webpage given, and stores them in the

local system.

Wait, so no more manual intervention?

Are you serious?

Not just that, it will give you a clear boost in speed, efficiency

and a near zero-error environment.

You had me convinced at automation! This is brilliant!

I know! I MIGHT EVEN takE that up as

a challenge!

Now if only there was some way to implement this in

the physical world, actual stores could be set up automatically!

At the Client’s office

20

Page 23: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

By putting our heads together, we figured out a solution that fixed our client’s problem.

A problem that we saw because we ARE always looking. Looking for ideas to address our client’s pain points and give them value—centric solutions.

And that’s the true essence of an Ideapreneur, isn’t it?

Aunty, what do you do?

I make a difference.

Alka’s idea was used by her client and helped them generate a value worthUSD 256,000 per year.

Next: AN IDEApreneur translates his ideas in...

21

Page 24: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

let me explain the situation to you.

OH...

The beautiful thing about relationships…

…is that they take time to build.Good morning, sir. I’m

the associate consultant from HCL who…

Some, as I found out, more than others.

I’m sorry. He doesn’t speak English. I’ll interpret

for him.

22

Oslo, Norway

Page 25: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

I hadn’t been in Oslo for a day and I was already feeling cold. And it wasn’t just the weather.

My client was a major energy company into oil and gas production and I had just flown in to help manage their database, since HCL was their I.T. Partner.

As you all know, we have quite a challenge ahead, so I won’t beat

around the bush.

But it wasn’t the challenge that I was worried about.

60% of the client’s server database is configured using SharePoint. That’s 80 databases per SQL Server, with 20 restoration requests per week. each request takes up to

10 hours or more to complete.

Holy moly! Their disk space must be taking

a real beating!

Especially since their metrics are constantly assessed and analysed. Yikes! What

a Mess!

...and engineering couldn’t have solved it.

Back at HCL

There was another problem as well...

23

Page 26: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

And trust me, I was racking my brain for the answer all day.

...is that so? Not even a smile? Looks like you’ve got one tough

client on your hands.

So it seems. But that’s the real challenge. We can give them engineering any given

Sunday. But we’ve got to give them more.

Is that really necessary though? I don’t see the big I.T. giants doing this. It’s always “Do

better” this and “next gen” that!

All of which are meaningless without building foundations of trust,

transparency and flexibility. SO...

And even as I spoke those words, I realised…

…maybe the answer wasn’t as complicated as I thought.

Alex, what did you just say?

Takk!

Excuse Me, Miss!

24

Page 27: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

As your I.T. Partner,we could HAVE just

manageD your database & the current system and

left it at that.

What do you mean?

Yes, relationships take time to build.

But when you finally make that connection…

Combining Power Shell withTransact SQL-Script, we’ve created

a tool that alertS you about depleting space and automateS manual tasks, turning a month’s job into a day’s.IT will streamline your processes

at no extra cost...

?!

A simple “Takk” will do.

oh! Of course! Thank you! Aren’t You a fast learner!

Ha...Ha...haha!

Very…good. Thank…you!

It’s well worth the wait.

Nikhil, through a single idea added a value worth usd 175,000 to his client.

Next: An Ideapreneur finds the cure in...

But where i come from, we don’t stop at what’s enough. we find a better

solution.

…except one.

25

Page 28: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Healthcare has a peculiar tendency.

Its importance tends to peak when it fails.

you see why migrating raw data from clinical trials is so important? Without them, we won’t get FDA approvals, and

without FDA approvals, we can’t release drugs into the market. I understand, sir.

And as a Project Lead for the SDTM Migration project, managing the tool for this job is your department, am I right? Can you please make sure we are plagued

with fewer errors?

NEW DELHI, INDIA

26

Page 29: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

But we Ideapreneurs, like our counterparts in healthcare, know a thing or two about rising through hardship.

guys, when we can’t find a way toreduce errors or the time to market for our client, a leading research-driven healthcare

company, it really hurts.

And to find our solution, we need

to simply…?

If you could only finish that sentence!

BACK AT HCL

?! Upgraded.

I wonder when it was last…

You know what? I think their migration

tool is quite….

Out-dated.

UH...

27

Page 30: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Like the noble profession, Ideapreneurship is founded on knowledge and understanding.

Several times? And with numerous bug fixes? I see... Thank you.

Tell me, Tanya, the proprietary tool currently used for data migration,

has it ever been customiSed or modified in any way?

Through in-depth analysis and dedication, we both find ways to go beyond the contract.

And we are both propelled forward by the same fuel:

Value-centric innovation.

28

Page 31: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Next: An Ideapreneur stikes a chord in…

That’s all right. We might not be at this juncture if you hadn’t.

About last time, I’m sorry if I came off as a bit harsh. I really…

Wow! When you say Relationship Beyond the Contract, you really mean it! This is more than I could

have dreamt of! But will it work?

So, no. we aren’t going to manage the current tool. Being a .Net based application with MS SQL Server 2008

for back-end, DIAAS is a complete and comprehensive end-to-end service.

The customer implemented Payal’s idea in 8 projects and has saved usd i.2 MN so far.

What do you mean? Do we have a fix?

DIaaS makes migrating raw clinical data faster, more efficient and way more

accurate, giving you submission-ready output.

I wouldn’t be here if it didn’t.

We have more. We call it Data Integration as a Service or DIaaS.

You see, the proprietary migration tool is plagued with issues.

29

Page 32: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Music, in essence…

…is a good idea on a strong stage.

Their SONGS are giving me goose bumps!

Thanks for bringing me here, man!

I found them on Soundbook. Now I can’t get enough of

their music!

For me, a Technical Analyst at HCL…

LONDON, ENGLAND

30

Page 33: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

…that’s what being an Ideapreneur was all about.

What a show last night!

I was working with one of the largest music publishing and recording companies in the world, helping them manage their back office systems.

I know, read my blog about it.

then Here’s a challenge! I’ve discovered that our client is facing a grave problem.

They’re losing a lot ofmoney annually. You see, There

are too many steps in their supply chain, right from the point a

customer places an order to the delivery dispatch.

Just the thought of solving the client’s problem...

Gosh! manually monitoring their supply chain is going to

be exhausting and without any long-term benefit.

Exactly! we’ve got to find a better way to make SURE

their supply chain runs like clockwork!

Guys, Work’s totally under control!

and each step is prone to failure.`

LATER at HCL

31

Page 34: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Later that night…

...and knowing that my idea could benefit other clients around the world...

So, made any inroads with the client’s problem?

Looking at your face, I know you’ll have something for the

Value Portal soon!

From receiving sales order idocs from the

customer...

Thanks, Kajal! With a manager as supportiveas you, I have

no doubt!

sounds like you’re getting closer to

the answer!

...to sending outbound delivery idocs for pick up, it’s quite a

complex task, which i feel needs a time restriction.

....gave me goosebumps!

I’m sure of it!

32

Page 35: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

I was sure because I knew….

If our innovation delivered results...

We took a standard SAP report and added customised functionality

to allow emails to be sent while simultaneously restricting their

time schedules.

and was truly value-centric...

The result? Fewer errors,punctual deliveries,

less time spent monitoringthe process, and…

When We noticed your supply chain issues, we created an automated time monitoring tool

to highlight any delivery failures.

Then the idea would be music to the client’s ears.

...about USD 214,000 worth of sales will be identified

in time to prevent the sales being lost.

Warren’s idea was used by the client to save usd 214,000 each year and to improve the overall efficiency of their supply chain.

but you are the first ideapreneur to rock

my world!

Man, I’ve met rock stars and dined with demi-gods...

I like where this is going, my man! How’d you do it?

Next: An Ideapreneur answers the call in...

Now the support team can rapidly identify

any errors in the idoc processing or the

process in SAP.

33

They say an Ideapreneur could be anyone.

That unassuming chap walking down the street? He could be a thought leader, a value generator.

or a visionary, adding value to clients with each idea.

at hcl, that’s who i wanted to be.

my client was a telecom company in the business of unified communications, and they were working closely with HCL to maintain call centre divisions for various companies.

Trust, transparency and flexibility, huh? Looks like we have quite a bit in common. But my company, you see, is up against

a wall…

…and I can’t seem to get a half-decent solution from any of the so-called ‘tech

giants’ out there.

“Some I just don’t trust”

We can improve your service speed, but...hehe...we’ll need to increase

manpower by 90%.

“Some are radical just for the sake of it”

It’s new! It’s crazzzy! And it will do your business wonders….we

think…maybe.

“And some are still living in the past”

Conform all your business methods to our processes. It is the only possible way.

You guys on the other hand, seem to have values that resonate with mine.

So tell me, can you help us?

Gladly. That’s why I’m here, sir. What exactly

is the problem?

The next day at HCl

So their customers still copy thetoll free number off the web to their phone manually, and then

make the call?

Talk about traditional! What’re you thinking, man?

What if…I don’t know yet…but I feel the solution is staring me right in

the face.

…they want us to manage tickets and make their business more user friendly. I feel we can go beyond the contract here guys, but I

just can’t put my finger on how.

37

Page 40: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

A vision had caught hold of me.

Instead of just doing our job and reducing tickets….

A vision that not only managed the problem…

..we can do so much more. wait a minute...Aha!

...but eradicated it completely.

“Staring me in the face”, indeed!

It’s called WebRTC! customers can now log their feedback through voice calling, chat

windows and video chat directly on the web.

…it’s free.

Sir, I believe anyone could have

done it…

Next: an ideapreneur comes from the other side, in...

Barun created a usd 210,000 benefit for his client with the simple implementation of WebRTC, a free to use software.

Plus...

it also records their feedback, so you’ll know their problem if they

ever call again. This eliminates future call centre tickets, and

lets you do more for customers.

I...I don’t know what to say. We didn’t even know this was

possible. How’d you do it?

…but only at HCL.

Dixon, USA

Crossing the fence and transforming from a client to a vendor put me in a unique position.

I joined HCL as a rebadged employee from my former organisation. My previous employer, now turned vendor was a Finnish company in the business of pulp, paper and timber manufacturing.

Sir, you have a meeting at the client’s

in 3 hours.

I think like a client, but work like a vendor!

Oh yes, of course! Thank you, Peggy.

40

Page 43: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

In many ways, my transition from client to vendor was smoother than expected. I didn’t have to build relationships from scratch. in fact, I used our shared history to take the relationship further.

As a client service manager, I was the face of HCL for the customer. We provided support to the client’s infrastructure and data centres.

Oh, if you are interested, there’s an

issue we’re facing...

Name here, purpose of visit here, sign…

Nick! How’ve you been?

Now you’re speaking my language! WHAT

HAVE YOU GOT FOR ME?

Well look who dropped by?

I can’t complain! Since you went over to HCL, there’s a whole new

level of understanding between us.

41

Page 44: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Our client was looking for a solution that could make the role of a reception redundant!

They need a technology intervention to handle their

visitor data and visiting vendors, along with their NDAs, safety records and certificates of insurance

if required.

And who better to understand the client’s needs than two former

employees, huh?

You read my mind, David! Having been the client, we know the

standards they expect and with our skills combined, we’ll have

the magic touch.Now you’ve read

my mind!

just think about it. we use touchscreens just

about everywhere. Why not here?

Ah, of course! I see it now. Let’s get

on it!

later, at hcl

Really? What do you mean?

42

Page 45: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Together we created an electronic visitor signer. Now, a visitor only had to punch in their details into a touchscreen for further access. But wait, there’s more. We

promised you we wouldn’t leave without giving you a

little extra.

FROM THE CLIENT’S REACTION, IT WAS EASY TO see THAT TheY really loved our idea...

We’ve added a function whichallows you to view the history of visits for each guest, making it easier to track

regular visitors and vendors. Amazing work guys! I can already see how this could help transform

our I.T. strategy.

HCL isn’t just a vendor. For us, HCL is a partner.

we’re definitely implementing this in our other facilities too. You

know, as a result of your efforts...

Todd’s idea created a value worth usd 140,000 over a period of one year and was extended to two more facilities.

Next: an ideapreneur brings harmony in...

...and we also realised something important that day.

Hi Steve, Apart from my…

Where’s our Ideapreneur

today?

It was 2011. I was a technical lead at HCL and my client was a major American Internet corporation who, incidentally, was one of the world’s first email providers. While working on a project, a different problem caught my attention.

Wow, these mail trails are getting messy and I can’t find anything within their system.

Maybe I can get everyone on the same page…Hmmm…

But how?The client had groups of 40 people in each team, each with a specific task to perform. For the team to function optimally, the project lead needed to keep track of who was delivering what, and how.

Which was crazy! Because of an inefficient project management tool, the project lead had to sift through individual performances, progress and results!

OREGON, USA

44

Page 47: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Using our project management tool as a template, I could create a tool that helps my client manage individual projects.

Like ours!!!

The solution was right under my nose all along! You see, being an I.T. company, HCL uses the best practices in the industry.

I figured it out, Becky!our own Super efficient

project management tool can save the day!

But as your friend, I was just coming

over to tell you to get some rest.

Hey! How’s it going?

Congrats! AS your manager, i’m very

impresssed.

“Hi Steve, Apart from my assigned project, I’ve proactively taken up another one. The challenge is to get all client teams on the same page. They could sure use an effective project management tool, much like ours. “

45

Page 48: Vol. · Index Birth of the Ideapreneur 2 The Flight of Ideas 6 The Search for Ideas 10 The Idea of Obsolescence 14 Case of the Chameleon Stores 18 The Language of Ideas 22

Wicked! Bye-Bye IMs and mail trails! This is one

cracker of an idea!Let’s hope the client

thinks so too!

The project management tool was a hit! The client gave it a4 out OF 5 rating. I felt likedancing right then!

That’s not all! I’ve integrated Bugzilla to capture the status report and

now the team lead can easily oversee the entire project and view individual

employee performance.

This tool will help the manager look into how the tasks are being scheduled and what factors are

slowing down the process.

Jackpot! We were looking for a solution just like

this one!! It’s like you read our minds!

I didn’t actually break into dance, though. that’s just how I felt!

Aw man, I wish I’d thought of that! So now they can collate their entire

communication at one point and broadcast the info to each team

member? That’s awesome!

Work for me, is play!

On the contrary…

What were you up to last night? All work and no play, huh?

In my previous job we were just expected to go into work, perform our tasks and then get out. That’s it. There was no value addition to whatever we were doing.

HCL in that way is a breath of fresh air. Here we are left in the open to experiment and create value. In fact, It’d be safe to say...

The clients used Ramya’s project management tool, which has a projected value of usd 120,000.

next:

the heart of value centric innovation, the soul of hcl’s every relation,if there’s one thing that’s for sure,it’s the return of the ideapreneur!

stay tuned for Volume 2!
