n any given day, Molly Clayton says her life can be pretty overwhelming. This mother

of six is a farmer and business owner who looks at things positively. “Even when times are tough, I still feel like I’m living the dream,” said Clayton.

Clayton’s past did not include farm life. While she grew up in small Iota, La., her path as an adult had a tinge of glamour to it. In the late 1990s, Clayton was living in Houston working as a personal chef. She says that job took her from “Motown to Hollywood” cooking for entertainers and other affluent people.

While in Houston, Clayton would often visit home. It’s in her hometown that she met her husband, Joey, at church one Sunday.

“Marriage brought me back home to Louisiana where we reside on 15 acres of the 40-acre farm Joey’s family owns called Bon Cochon,” said Clayton. Once home, Clayton landed a job in the nursing home industry as

a nutritionist, but leaving her business in Houston, the Mustard Seed, was hard.

“Joey said he would build me a commercial kitchen on our property behind our home and he did. It’s amazing. That’s where I started preparing heart healthy and pre-packaged meals. People were really catching on and I had some success.”

But Clayton shifted her focus when one of their six kids was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. She took everything out of her home that had chemicals and started growing her own food.

“100% of our food is farm raised. We don’t market ourselves as a diet food company or a heart

healthy company, but we are a company for people who are concerned with where food comes from. I can tell you where everything I cook comes from.”

Louisiana Agriculture & Forestry Today

Baton Rouge, La. (July 20, 2015) – A joint investigation by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) and the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the arrests of three people Monday in connection with the extensive vandalism of logging equipment that took place off Prairie Road in south Ouachita Parish last week.

Joshua Jurca, 22, and Rhonda Barnes, 21, both of 2951 Prairie Road in Monroe, La. and a 13-year old juvenile were all charged with felony Criminal Damage to

Property over $50,000.The arrests are the result of

a complaint filed by a logging contractor who was logging a 600-acre tract of property near 3000 Prairie Road in south Ouachita Parish.

According to investigators, on July 11 and 12 these individuals entered the logging site and cut hydraulic hoses on a John Deere loader, broke the windshield and gauges on a log truck and poured dirt in the fuel tank and engine block. Engine and hydraulic oil were poured all over the ground and

on a bulldozer from portable storage tanks. In addition, tools from the work truck were scattered all over the ground.

The wires on a John Deere loader/processor were shorted out and the wires to the trailer scale system were cut. In addition to all the damage, an Ingersoll Rand pneumatic grinder and a curved Turkish blade machete were also stolen.

“Our agents along with Ouachita Parish sheriff’s detectives and deputies blanketed the area talking to residents, leaving business cards and putting up reward posters all

last week. This work generated leads that resulted in the arrests of these individuals,” Mike Strain, LDAF Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner.

The Louisiana Forestry Association and Ouachita Parish Crime Stoppers offered a$3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Jurca and Barnes were booked into the Ouachita Parish Detention Center and the juvenile was booked into Green Oaks Detention Center in Monroe.

but Clayton says they’re not good at everything. “This year, we outsourced all of our vegetables. I cannot cook fulltime, raise a family and take care of animals. We realize there are others who do things very well. We are good at animals, but not at vegetables.”

She says she’ll easily spend $400 a week on vegetables at one of the other local farms which is beneficial to other farmers.

The Clayton’s commercial kitchen and retail store is called Bon Vie Kitchen which means “good life”. This is how their business works. The customer orders online and Clayton utilizes pick-up points to get the meals to those customers. “Some pick-up points may be farmers markets, local businesses or even a church parking lot. Now we also have a licensed retail location – Tops Appliances and Cabinetry in Lafayette.”

Clayton says they have plans to grow their online market. She says there are challenges in marketing what they do because they fall into

a “niche” category.“My husband and I were both

raised in Iota and know the value of hard work. Our farm is a great place to be a child, it’s a great place to be a pig and it’s a great place to be a cow.”

It’s also become a family business. All of the kids have chores even the youngest. Clayton’s two-year old waters the tomatoes every day, her three-year old fills the chicken feeders and the four-year old scoops the feed for the sows. Clayton says the kids know that if the chores are not done, the farm may cease to exist.

“I can already tell my four-year old is different from other four-year olds. I want my children to have personal responsibility. They’re learning now. If we don’t sustain the family farm, we won’t have farms to buy from.”

While Clayton does not market her business as a dietary meal service, she says her meals are naturally lower in calories because they are portion controlled and “clean” food. “It’s a wholesome

way to feed families.” Clayton takes her business very

seriously and works to stay in compliance with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry as well as the Department of Health and Hospitals. At the upcoming Farm to Table conference in New Orleans August 8, Clayton will be part of a panel to discuss how to bring meat/protein legally to the table. She will use her business Bon Vie Kitchen as an example of one that wants to be in compliance when meat is being processed. “People need to know that meat needs to be processed in an approved facility and businesses are subject to meat inspections.” She added, “I started working with these agencies about a year and a half ago. I want people to recognize that those rules and regulations are not stifling. You can get through it. We do it all. It’s worth it to be involved with your government agency and do things the right way.”

Meanwhile, Clayton says her family will continue to work

hard on the farm and grow their business. She knows she’s getting much more out of living on the farm. “I tell my kids all the time, ‘You’re going to be the one who is responsible, who shows up to work on time, who can pay your

bills and balance a checkbook.’ I feel farm life is the best way to build my kid’s character.”

Foodie, continued from page 1

Baton Rouge, La. (July 22, 2015) – The U.S. De-partment of Agriculture (USDA) declared these par-ishes primary natural disaster areas due to produc-tion losses caused by the combined effects of rain, flooding, high winds, and hail that occurred from April 27 through June 26, 2015. Those parishes are: Avoyelles, Bossier, Caddo, East Feliciana, Frank-lin, Grant, Iberville, Natchitoches, Pointe Coupee, Rapides, Red River and West Baton Rouge.

In accordance with section 321(a) of the Con-solidated Farm and Rural Development Act, these additional areas are named as contiguous disaster parishes. Those parishes are: Allen, Ascension, As-sumption, Bienville, Caldwell, Catahoula, Concor-dia, De Soto, East Baton Rouge, Evangeline, Iberia, La Salle, Madison, Richland, Sabine, St. Helena, St. Landry, St. Martin, Tensas, Vernon, Webster, West Feliciana and Winn.

A disaster designation makes farm operators in primary areas and those areas contiguous to primary areas eligible to be considered for certain assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA), provided eligibility requirements are met. This assistance includes FSA emergency loans. Farmers in eligible parishes have eight months from the date of a disas-

ter declaration to apply for low interest emergency loans. FSA considers each emergency loan applica-tion on its own merits, taking into account the extent of production losses on the farm, and the security and repayment ability of the operator.

Farmers and ranchers who have suffered severe losses may apply for emergency assistance with their local FSA Office.

“The recent flooding did a number on our agricul-tural community. Unpredictable weather is some-thing that the farming community deals with on a regular basis. This assistance is necessary to help sustain the businesses of our agricultural produc-ers,” said Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M.

Emergency loans help producers recover from production and physical losses following a drought, flooding and other natural disasters or quarantine. As a general rule, a farmer must have suffered at least a 30 percent loss of production to be eligible for a FSA emergency loan.

Additional programs may be available to assist farmers and ranchers in this area and they are en-couraged to contact their local FSA Office or visit www.fsa.usda.gov.
