They say that into each life a little rain must fall. Ifthat’s the case, cattlemen in St. Charles Parish willclaim they received a lifetime quota in the first twen-ty days of December 2009.

Cows are tough animals. For the most part,Louisiana cattlemen graze their herds in pasturesthroughout the year in the heat and cold with mini-mal issues.

Usually the biggest cattle problem cattlemen in thecoastal parishes face are hurricanes.

Hundred mile per hour hurricane winds cause tidalsurges and cows can be swept away with the surf andlost.

Though 2009 was predicted to be an average hurri-cane year, no major storms hit Louisiana. Coastalcattlemen and farmers across the state breathed asigh of relief on Nov. 30, the last day of the hurricaneseason. But along with December’s holiday cheercame rain, and cattlemen, especially those in St.Charles, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes wereforced to deal with another threat from MotherNature.

The average precipitation for Louisiana is about 60inches a year. A lot of rain, yes, but generally man-ageable. 17 inches of precipitation dropping in threedays is a whole different measurement. Not quite aNoah’s ark kind of problem but a difficult situationnonetheless.

A lot of St. Charles and Lafourche Parish cattlemenpasture their cattle on the flatlands along BayouGauche Road. Bayou Gauche Road starts at the OldSpanish Trail in Paradis and travels in a southerly

direction for six miles until it reaches Bayou Gaucheand hooks east. Cattlemen lease land on either sideof the road from U.S. 90 to WPA Road. CanalsNumber 16, 18, 19, 20 and 22 among others criss-cross the lowland pasture. Buried underneath theground are numerous pipelines. There is even a signin one field that advises anyone from anchoring ordredging in the area because of a pipeline.

The canals drain the land well under normal condi-tions, normal conditions meaning 60 inches of rainspread out over twelve months, not 17 inches in aweek.

Cattlemen, like their cattle, are a tough breed too. They know what needs to be done to take care oftheir animals and they’re ready to do everythingwithin their power to keep them well-fed andhealthy.

“Within their power” is the key phrase. TheLouisiana drainage canal that can siphon off 17 inch-es of rain that falls in three days hasn’t been dug yet.Levees or spoil bank levees are designed to keepwater out, but if water gets inside, it has no place todrain.

As a result, the Bayou Gauche pastures wereswamped, flooded and otherwise turned into shallowlakes.

Cattle are smart enough to wander up to the highground along the canals. If no high land was avail-able the cattle had little choice but to remain strand-ed in two and three feet of water. Two feet of waterwill put newborn calves at risk.

Page 12 MARKET BULLETIN January 14, 2010

As the excess rainwater flooded grazingland, the area’s winter hay supplies wererapidly becoming inaccessible. That’s whenthe cattlemen knew they were getting introuble.

Mid-December reports from LSUAgCenter Extensions Agent Rene Schmitsaid about 4,000 of approximately 5,000head of cattle in St. Charles Parish were introuble. Mike Hebert, the LSU parish agentfor Lafourche, estimated more than 10,000cattle were stressed in Lafourche andTerrebonne.

Cattle in St. Charles Parish contributenearly $2 million dollars to the local econo-my. In Lafourche the gross farm value ofcattle is almost $10 million.

John Walther, the Louisiana Departmentof Agriculture and Forestry emergency man-agement coordinator, began getting calls forassistance from the Governor’s Office ofHomeland Security and EmergencyPreparedness (GOHSEP) on Dec. 15.

“We had been monitoring the rainfall situ-ation in St. Charles, Lafourche andTerrebonne for several days prior to the15th,” Walther said. “The LouisianaCattlemen’s Association (LCA) was alsokeeping us informed of the conditions.”

Walther said Robert Joyner, the executivevice president of the LCA, located hay sup-

plies in Monroe, 300 miles away fromBayou Gauche.

“Robert remembered that the Universityof Louisiana at Monroe had sold all theircattle but still had their hay supply,” Walthersaid. “The ULM Foundation graciouslydonated the hay to the St. Charles andLafourche Parish cattlemen.”

Agriculture and Forestry CommissionerMike Strain approved the use of LDAF for-est protection division trucks to pick up thehay in Monroe and deliver the food to thecattlemen in Des Allemands and Raceland.

Strain, a cattleman himself, went down toBayou Gauche to survey the damage. Whathe saw was cattlemen helping their fellowcattlemen.

“Cattlemen always work together to helpsomebody out,” Strain said. “You knowthey’ve got big problems when they seekoutside resources for help.”

On December 18, two LDAF flatbedsrolled into Des Allemands and Raceland. Each carried 22 large round bales of hay.

“To receive this hay at this criticalmoment was perfect,” Schmit said. “But theproducers themselves help each other out.Still, the delivery of the hay was so timelyand important. Psychologically it was a bigboost for the cattlemen.”

Less than a week later another call came

in to LDAF emergency personnel and haydonated by B.J. Sonnier of Abbeville wastrucked in on LDAF vehicles.

Richard Chiasson of Des Allemands wasone of the fortunate cattlemen who had theresources to move his cattle to high land. Hedrove his cattle wagon though his floodedfield and herded the animals into a holdingpen. From there, he and another handstepped into the thigh-high chilly water andshooed the cows through the loading chuteinto the trailer. The cattle loaded, anothercattleman met him on Bayou Gauche Roadand transferred the livestock to a waitingtrailer and hauled them off to drier sur-roundings.

“I’m fortunate because I don’t have anycalves right now,” Chiasson said. “Thecalves wouldn’t have made it.”

Steve Thibodeaux of Houma has 138head, five bulls and 45 calves.

“I’m usually feeding my cattle twelvebales daily but I need to find more,”Thibodeaux said.

Food is not the only issue, Thibodeauxsaid. Fire ants also float on the water untilthey reach higher ground and he was con-cerned that cattle and calves stranded onlevees may have problems with the stinginginsects.

Cattleman Paul Degruise of Paradis said

80 percent of his grazing land is underwater. He keeps 26 head of cattle and five horseson his leased pasture.

“I think I can leave them out there,”Degruise said. “I can get hay to them unlessit gets worse.”

An early January report from Schmit hadnewborn calf mortality at 60. Six cows alsodied.

“Nutrition and the elements were the bigfactor in the losses,” Schmit said.

Louisiana cattlemen are in the cattle busi-ness mostly because it’s a family traditionand they enjoy it but sometimes they do geta bit weary dealing with floods and hurri-canes.

As the conditions improved and the waterbegan to recede, Gerald Mahan Jr., a sec-ond-generation cattleman from DesAllemands, was faced with digging out atractor stuck in a water-logged field.

In an interview with the Daily Comet,Mahan daydreamed about life as an apart-ment dweller.

“It's been pouring down rain and we arerunning through 6 and 8 inches of mud justto get to where the cattle are at. There is noend in sight,” he said. “I really enjoy beinga cattleman, but sometimes I want to havejust a goldfish and an apartment. If it diesyou just flush him down the commode.”
