54

The number one tool God uses to form my spiritual life is the Bible.

He uses His Word to mold me and shape me into His image. The Scriptures are compared to food and bring spiritual nourishment. Jesus claimed, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4). Peter said, “As newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby” (1 Pet. 2:2). The Bible is the believer’s spiritual food. Job affirmed, “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food” (Job 23:12). Throughout the Scriptures, the Bible is compared to food (milk, meat, bread). Therefore, it is critical for the believer to know how to feed himself. How do I become a self-feeder? Let me share with you 15 simple steps to improve your Bible reading.

15 Steps to

improve your

bible readingby Tim Yates

Tim Yates is an assistant pastor who oversees the Life Groups at Lewis

Memorial. Tim and his wife Myra grew up locally and graduated from Barboursville

High School. Both Tim and Myra are multiplying small group leaders and

thoroughly enjoy their role as trainers and equippers for the glory of God. They have a passion for making disciples and

mentoring small group apprentices.

Step #1: First of all, choose a Bible that feels comfortable. I rarely purchase a Bible online. I want to see it, feel it and hold it. I want the font size to be at least an 11. Some might even need a larger print. Furthermore, make sure you purchase a readable hard copy translation. I prefer the New King James, the English Standard Version, the New Living Translation and the Christian Standard Version of the Bible. After you read through one translation rotate to different translation in your next reading routine. Trust me, this will greatly broaden your understanding of the Scripture.

Step #2: Use a systematic plan. For instance, I highly recommend reading the Bible through once a year (Genesis through Revelation). You can read four chapters per day and read the Bible through in one year. You can also read a certain number of pages per day. For example, I have an ESV Bible with 1,042 pages. If you divide 1,042 pages by 365 days you find that you only have to read three pages a day to read the entire Bible through in a year. If you read merely six pages per day you can read the Bible through twice in one year. Get a plan and stick with your plan. Consistency is the key, because as we see in Hebrews 5:12-14, consistency compounds.

Step #3: Have a set time to read your Bible each day. For instance, if you are a morning person, then read your Bible in the morning. If you’re a night person, read your Bible at night. Discover when you’re most alert and attentive. Intentionality begins with having a set time to read the Bible every day. Also, don’t forget to write the date just above the chapter when you begin your daily reading. This will help you measure your consistency.

Step #4: Remove all distractions. Turn off the television, radio, and cell phones. To have a “quiet time,” you need to be in a quiet place. Although this is a challenge for many believers, it is nonetheless very important. Purposely unplug yourself from all the crazy interruptions and let God speak to you through the reading of His Word. Readers, beware! Noise pollution will hinder the process.

Step #5: Ask the Holy Spirit to be your teacher.

Intentionally pray Psalm 119:18, “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” The word “open” means to uncover and only the Holy Spirit can help you dig up those spiritual nuggets in the text. Purposely depend on the Holy Spirit. We do a great disservice to ourselves when we ignore the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit in Bible reading.

Step #6: Mark your Bible. Learn to use highlighters. Pastor Johnny Hunt said, “If you mark your Bible, your Bible will mark you.” I have found this to be true in my own life. Circle key words, underline important verses, and highlight the verses that give you special encouragement. Make the time and effort to mark up your Bible. I promise you will be glad you did.

Step #7: Read the Bible in context. The first rule of hermeneutics is “context is king.” Read the biblical text within the historical-cultural setting. Don’t Americanize the Bible and don’t read with a 21st century-mindset. We need to remember there is a great distance both in time and culture between the here and now and when the text was originally written. Furthermore, don’t pull verses out of context and try to develop a belief system. Those who use the Bible as a “telephone book of texts” are guilty of hermeneutical malpractice. Ask yourself, “Who was the text originally written to?” Jews, Gentiles, or Samaritans? Did the author address an individual, a king, or a specific nation? It is crucial for the student of Scripture to know exactly whom the original author addressed. As you read the text, try to recast and reconstruct the historical setting.

Step #8: Read the Bible out loud to yourself. The dual effect is incredible. The synergy of reading and hearing the Word will improve retention. Paul said, “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Rom. 10:17). I love to read my Bible out loud in my morning devotions. Also, learn to put yourself in the story and identify with the main character in the text. Change your voice tone, depending on the person speaking in the story (dramatized reading). This will deepen your retention and understanding.

Page 4: Vol. 9, Issue 7, August 2020 · 2020. 7. 29. · Step #12: Look for Promises to Claim. Thankfully, the Word of God is chocked full of promises. As you do your daily Bible reading,

6 7

Step #9: Pray as you read through the Bible each morning. For example, if the text identifies a specific sin, immediately stop reading and confess that sin. If the text gives a special promise, embrace the promise and pray that promise. Also, pray the prayers in the Bible. There are hundreds of prayers in the Bible. Make sure you pray those prayers. Praying the prayers of the Bible will greatly enrich your devotional life. Adding this one step will help your prayer life. Just try it.

Step #10: Look for recurring words. Repeated words or phrases usually point to a common theme. Marking (highlighting/underlining) repetitive words is a game-changer in reading comprehension. Furthermore, look for rhythms and patterns. Slowly read two or three words at a time or read each verse by one phrase at a time. Your comprehension will deepen, and the overall impact of Scripture will be more profound.

Step #11: Look for specific commands to obey. Use a yellow highlighter and highlight each command and ask the Lord to help you obey these biblical commands. Train your eyes to look for imperatives.

Step #12: Look for Promises to Claim. Thankfully, the Word of God is chocked full of promises. As you do your daily Bible reading, look for promises to claim, promises that give hope, encouragement, and life. The promises of God are like a fresh breath of air. They sustain you when life knocks you down. One of the most joyful experiences in the Christian life is when a believer discovers a particular promise in the Bible. I highly recommend you mark all the promises of God in your Bible with a yellow highlighter.

Step #13: Look up and define obscure words. One of the most important things you can do as you study the Scripture is to learn how to define keywords. For all practical intents and purposes, do not use the Webster Dictionary. The Bible was originally written in Hebrew (O.T.), Greek (N.T.), and a small portion of Daniel was written in Aramaic. Therefore, an English dictionary will be of little value when you begin to study specific words and phrases in the biblical

text. So let me recommend a couple of easy resources that will enhance your Bible study. For instance, I recommend you use Blue Letter Bible on your computer or laptop. This electronic resource is free and simple to use. You will have a ton of resources at your disposal (at the click of a mouse). I also recommend you use the NET Bible. This incredible resource is free and user friendly. The NET Bible also has a lot of resources. I highly encourage you to learn how to navigate through these resources. These two simple tools will help you look up the key words in the text.

Step #14: Look for Jesus on every page of Scripture. For instance, when you read through the Gospel of John, look for specific descriptions of Christ. Just in the first five verses of chapter one, Jesus is described as “the Word, God, Creator, Life and Light” (Jn. 1:1-5). Furthermore, chapter one portrays Him as “God in the flesh” (vv. 14, 18), “the Lamb of God” (vv. 29, 36), “the Son of God” (vv. 34), “Christ and Messiah” (vv. 41), “Rabbi and Teacher” (vv. 38, 49) and the “Son of Man” (v. 51). By merely reading the first chapter of the Gospel of John, you will discover that Jesus is God in human flesh. It is crucial we look for Jesus on the pages of Scripture. Christology, Lordship, and the deity of Christ are fundamental to our Christian faith. We can only move toward Christlikeness as we become acquainted with the Person of Jesus Christ.

Step #15: Meditation and deeper application. After I finish reading my set number of pages, I go back and look at the verses I highlighted in yellow. I pick one and then take a picture of it on my cell phone and review that verse throughout the day. It helps me meditate, memorize, and take the verse deeper into my spiritual life.

The most important tool in shaping my spiritual life is the Bible. Nevertheless, I must intentionally pick up “The Book” every day and read it for my spiritual nourishment. I encourage you to begin adding some of these simple steps to your daily routine, and hopefully, your Bible reading will become more productive. Who knows? Maybe just doing one of these simple steps will transform your life. At least try one of the steps. They really are simple.

Sundays in August! We have the green light to teach our kids under our new tent! We’re now meeting each Sunday in the 9:30 service! 1. Drop off your kids, 1st through 4th grades, in the upper parking lot, beside the Daystar House. (look for cones and workers) 2. Send a beach towel and Bible.3. Each child gets an activity bag and stays socially distant on their towel. (don’t worry we have bathrooms available and big fans to keep us cool)4. Music and a lesson. 5. Pick up in the same line as drop-off.

Page 5: Vol. 9, Issue 7, August 2020 · 2020. 7. 29. · Step #12: Look for Promises to Claim. Thankfully, the Word of God is chocked full of promises. As you do your daily Bible reading,

First let me ask you, what comes to your mind when I say the word “flourishing”? Perhaps you think of synonyms such as thriving, abundant, plentiful, fruitful...

I think we all want to flourish and not just battle for survival. So what do we need to flourish? Many will tell you the basics we need just to survive are: oxygen, water, food, shelter, a sense of love/belonging, safety, and sleep; and that’s just to survive! But what does it take to thrive?

Maybe we need all the “survival” things plus the right circumstances. Maybe to thrive we need all the basics plus a Starbucks each morning, a word of encouragement from that special person, a pat on the back from your employer at work, a bonus from your boss, a calm evening doing your favorite pastime, and perhaps a relaxing foot massage at the end of the day.

Let me share some verses with you that have been changing my perspective on this.

Jeremiah 17:5-8 Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the

Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

A couple of quick thoughts:

The man who trusts in the flesh:1. Is cursed (verse 5)2. Whoever trusts in man (himself included) will not flourish. (verse 5)3. He won’t grow (verse 6 “like a heath (bush) in the desert”)3. He won’t see when good comes into his life (Verse 6)4. He will always be surviving instead of thriving (verse 6 he’ll be “like a heath in the desert”)5. He will not have access to life-giving water (verse 6 “inhabit parched places”)

The man who trusts in the Lord:1. Is blessed (verse 7)2. Has a constant, unending supply of life-giving water (verse 8)3. He’s secure and has deep roots (verse 8)4. He’s unaffected by bad circumstances (verse 8 he “shall not see when heat cometh”)5. He is healthy (spiritually) (verse 8 “her leaf shall be green”)

FLOURISHING!

8

6. Can thrive during long seasons of drought and hardships (verse 8 “shall not be careful in the year of drought”)7. Will not stop bearing fruit (verse 8 “shall not cease from bearing fruit”

So there’s a Disney song that asks the question “When will my life begin?” And I believe that’s a question that we should be asking too. I think many of us are waiting for this covid-19 business to end in order for our lives to begin again. But is returning to a state of normalcy and comfort really the goal? Or maybe we should ask this question. “Is achieving all of our goals and plans a good source of hope and life?” If it is, I’m afraid none of us will ever experience it. This life is too full of twists, turns, and disappointments for us to put our trust in circumstances.

What do we do now?

So we see that the goal is not a return to normalcy or a fast-track to fulfill all of our plans, but to a deeper-rooted dependence on our Lord, the giver of unconditional, unending, overflowing life (John 4:14).

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6-7

True life comes from The Vine. If we’re connected to Him, we’ll have a constant, unending supply of life that will feed us through the greatest drought. No matter the crisis we face, He’ll be there filling us with life. Life is available NOW! “So when will our lives begin?” It begins as soon as we spread our roots wide and deep into Him, the source of all life!

John 4:13-14 “Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

Since May, our church has been holding worship gatherings at a local park. One of the advantages of living in a desert is that weather is very predictable in the summer, hot but no rain to stop us! Most people would probably assume we moved to the park due to Covid-19. This is part of the reason. The other reason is because our church building is under construction. Being in the park helps us work on our building without hindrances due to our gatherings.

We have loved being in the park. It is refreshing to worship outdoors. It has allowed us to spread out in the grass for safe social distancing. It has also allowed us to transmit our service to vehicles for those who feel more comfortable worshipping in the comfort of their cars. Suprisingly we have had several new people attend our services in the park. If we had nice weather year round, I would be tempted to stay outdoors.

An Unexpected Adoption

In March, Stacy and I learned of a young boy from a foreign country that needed adopted. He desired to be in a Christian home. We brought him into our family. He has been staying with us for the past couple of weeks and it has been a joy. This child has a beautiful redemption story and he loves Jesus. Until the adoption is final, we will not be able to share that story with you but hopefully we will get that opportunity in the near future. In the meantime, would you please pray for us as we move forward? There are several things that need to fall in place for this adoption to work. This child comes from a country that makes adoption difficult beyond typical international adoption procedures. He also has a few

medical needs and education needs. Our three boys have been excited for this journey. We are trusting in the Lord each step we take.

Church Planting

In June, we had two families from our Church start a new church just 10 miles west of us. The church started in a small community known for its polygamist practicies. They are currently meeting in a home that used to be owned by a polygamist family. Please pray for our church and the new church plant. We lost a few key leaders in our church for this new plant.

Virtual Ministries

For our midweek gatherings we have continued to practice virtual meetings for most of our ministries. For the first time ever, we held a virtual VBS. We posted it to our facebook page and handed out gift bags to everyone that registered. The bags included crafts, lessons, games, and more. Kids earn prizes that we deliver to their homes based on their level of participation. We are also trying a similar idea with a summer kids club.

Thank you for partnering with us to reach Utah for Christ. We are in this together.

GIFTS THAT SPREAD THE GOSPEL THROUGH ...

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILDWhile we cannot host packing parties at the church our hope is to pack and ship as many or more than we ever have. Here’s the new process:

• Collect the items listed here and online each month ... but keep them at your home instead of delivering them here.

• Pack items into shoeboxes that we provide .. but at your house instead of at the church.

• Include shipping cost via a check to Samaritan’s Purse and deliver the box(es) to church during designated collection times.

Want to help but don’t want to shop or pack? No problem, we need you too. There are two important things you can do:

Prayer is a powerful resource for strength and success in reaching others with the Gospel message. Please pray for:

• Victory in the salvation of the children (and their families) who receive the boxes.

• Strength for our OCC Team who work countless hours to organize, manage, prepare, and oversee all that goes into this ministry.

Shipping is $9 per box and we ship approximately 1500 just from our church. While the cost of each box packed by families is to be covered by that family our OCC Team also packs hundreds of boxes on behalf of the church and the church covers the shipping cost.

*Very important: NO LIQUIDS such as glue or paint

My favorite thing in my shoebox was a pencil sharpener. I didn’t get many toys and that was the biggest one so that’s why I really liked it.

It was in the shape of a dinosaur. At first I didn’t know it was a pencil sharpener but then I saw the hole. I just thought it was so creative. I’m a creative person so I really appreciated that aspect of it.

Hairclips were something that I really wanted because my hair was down to my hips. We lived across the street from the market so we would wander around and dream about what we would buy if we could afford it. My dream was always from the hairclip stand. Then I got some in my shoebox! They were really special to me.

The other thing that I still cherish to this day was a notebook. It was small and had a little spiral on it. I and the other girls would use it to write our secrets. We’d ask each other to write something special, kind of like you do in yearbooks.

It was so much fun. I still have it. I read it every now and again to see what my old friends said about me. It was my treasure.

Most importantly, when I received my shoebox I learned about Jesus. I had heard about God but I had not heard about Jesus and that makes all the difference in the world.

They explained that He died on the cross so that we could become His. To me that meant that God is the God of adoption, and adoption is every orphan’s

dream.

They encouraged us to pray to Him as a loving Father who wants to hear from us. I thought, This is the Man that could make it happen. So I decided I’d

go big and ask Him for my biggest dream.

It was exciting to pray for the first time. I went outside and said, “God, I’m not sure if You’re real, but it sure sounds good to me. I’ve been disappointed before, though, so I want to hear from You directly. I’m going to take this bunch of leaves and throw them up in the air. If the leaves blow to the left I will know You hear me, but if they blow in any other direction, well forget it.” I thought, Surely He can control the leaves.

I threw up the leaves and they blew left. So I said, “All right, here’s my real prayer request. God, allow me and my sister to be adopted.”

This was the beginning of my relationship with God even though I didn’t know much about Him other than He was loving and He was in control of the earth.

A year later I got my miracle when a family in South Carolina adopted my sister and me. I knew that God is a powerful God the way I’d been told. It was confirmed to me that what they said was true. It was exciting!

The shoebox was the beginning of my understanding about God. It was a gateway to realizing that He loves me. It meant hope to me. It was the beginning of my faith and was a huge gift to me.

The blessing at first was the gift and the toys. I don’t have them anymore (except for the hairclips and the notebook), but my faith continues to grow and bear fruit.

This particular gift is something I will never forget. Now I am able to extend the gift to other people as I pack shoeboxes with my husband and family and encourage other people to participate.

It’s such a privilege to be on this side of the shoebox. It is so much better to give than to receive. I must say I loved my gift and I received it with such joy, but the gift keeps on giving.

IRINa -and- A PENCIL SHARPENERWhen I received my shoebox gift, it was a gateway to realizing that God loves me.

Are you looking for a church home?Would you prayerfully consider whether God may be leading you to our family of believers? If you are ready, follow these simple steps:

17 Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit. Hebrews 13:17 NIV
