Reflection by Fr Emmanuel SeoAs the debate in the NSW parliament regarding the abortion bill continues, itreally is a wake-up call for us all, that our nation unfortunately is not quite as safeas it looks. History proves, no matter how diabolical a regime, immunity isusually guaranteed for those who acquiesce to the evil or otherwise remaininoffensively silent. However, the individual safety of some is hardly indicativeof the wellbeing of the whole, since the protection they enjoy relies on thetransient authority of the tyrant in power. Hence, this precarious cover is likely tovanish the moment they dare to challenge the status quo or when the regime iseventually overthrown. Subsequently, only because we are not immediatelyaffected by the abortion law, it does not mean that our society as a whole is a safeone. All it means is for now the category we belong to is not under direct threat. But once we unwittingly step into a new social classification which is deemed bysociety as less useful or even burdensome, the same culture of death could comeknocking on our own doors (e.g. euthanasia).

Abortion is and always will be an intrinsic evil. But to make matters worse, itperplexes me that a group of supposedly well-educated individuals can decidethat even the most reasonable amendments are not acceptable. For example, theirrejection of the amendment prohibiting gendercide cannot be more contrary tothe partisan slogan claiming this to be about women’s rights (*statistics every-where show that gender selective abortions tend to favour the male child). Sadly,we are living in the midst of a moral and spiritual void, in which grave publicevil are endorsed and celebrated, rather than denounced and driven out. Still, wemust never lose hope as St. Paul teaches, “Where sin increased, grace aboundedall the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through right-eousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Rom 5:20-21). Let uskeep praying therefore, and pray especially through the intercession of our pa-tron, St. Michael the Archangel, who is our protection against satan and all hisworks.

Silence in the ChurchPlease maintain a respectful silence in the church at all times, knowing that Jesusis Really Present in the tabernacle. Also, let us be mindful that people are makingtheir spiritual preparation and thanksgiving before and after Mass.No clapping after MassA reminder that clapping is the proper response to a performance rather thanprayer. Please pray instead for whomever you would like to thank. A word ofencouragement may also be helpful.
