A LaBelle woman lost her life during the early morning hours of Saturday, May 5, as fi re ripped through her mobile home in Aqua Isles. Mary Inez Stone, 75, lived alone at Lot H23S in an older mo-bile home, according to LaBelle Fire Chief Ray Pittman. She had re-sided there since 1991-92 and was known as a “very sweet woman.” Retired, she had worked at Oak-brook Nursing Home.

Lt. A.T. Stafford of the Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives in West Palm Beach reported that the fi re had been ruled accidental, and probably originated from a cigarette or candle left burning. He said Ms. Stone was known to be a heavy smoker.

Chief Pittman said the fi re most likely smoldered for a long time before fl ames erupted. The home was already half engulfed in fl ames when deputies arrived at the scene, he explained.

Even as the LaBelle Heritage Museum has opened its doors at its new location, members continue to carefully pack up and move artifacts from its old location on S. Lee Street. The new location, 360 N. Bridge Street, is itself a LaBelle historical treasure, the old Poole Store, built in 1911.

Members are certainly excited about the move. In fact, the increased visibility of the museum has already resulted in many more visitors since the move last February. Inside the LaBelle Heritage Museum continues to focus attention on the people and the times that built LaBelle.

One of the museum’s prize artifacts, the historic Warren Steam Engine from the commuter boat Navette, once owned by J.P. Morgan and eventually sunk from disrepair into an old section of the Caloosahatchee River, is to be placed as a permanent display in Barron Park, with photos and supporting documenation at the museum.

One of the focal points of the museum continues to be Dr. Brungard’s offi ce, set up as it was when she came to practice medi-cine in LaBelle in 1951.

and nature area, featuring ancient bones, many of which were discovered right here in the LaBelle area. Partway encircling the fossil room, local artist Meredith Marcum is gradually completing a murual depicting scenes from a prehistoric LaBelle.

Another display highlights kitchen items used by many a mother locally to care for her family and household in the early years of the town. Ella Forrey Burchard’s hand-made traditional Seminole dress is displayed and nearby the reproduction of a 19th Cen-tury loom stands.

An ADA ramp makes it easy to move from the parking lot into the building and plans are to put in an elevator to the second

fl oor.Shelving from old Forrey Store and the

Western Union desk add to the ambiance of a place dedicated to the past. Volunteers are also working on a photo gallery.

Docent Caroline White came to LaBelle in 1988 and, thanks to her association with Lynda Rider Smith who has been a major infl uence in the LaBelle Heritage Museum for many years, developed a strong con-nection with the area. She and her fellow volunteers can provide an entertaining and educational trip through LaBelle’s past.

Upstairs, visitors will soon be able to en-joy traveling exhibits and research on local history using historical documents and old newspapers such as the Caloohathee Cur-rent and the Henry County News.

An activity room for kids will help en-sure that the importance of LaBelle’s past remains part of the younger generation’s consciousness.

Don’t forget to visit the gift area as your leaving.

The LaBelle Heritage Museum has partic-ipated in many area activities, including La-Belle’s Night on the Town and the Chamber of Commerce Farmers Market. It has taken part in the city’s Christmas celebration by decorating and hosting an open house at the Captain Hendry House last December. The museum assisted with events co-host-ed by Edison State College, the Clewiston Museum and Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Mu-seum for artifact and material preservation. it also participated in the very pouplar Big O Birding Festival this year.

The museum also hosts events for the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and other groups that highlight LaBelle’s history.

On Saturday, May 12, from 1-4 p.m. Pat-on-the-Porch, a special demonstration of the art of using the spinning wheel, will be put on by Pat Johnson.

The H.A. Rider home and offi ce, which formerly housed the museum, will be moved behind the building eventually. The museum is actively fundraising and looking for grants to go toward this major expense.

Membership meetings are the fi rst Thursday of every month except June, July and August, and include programs on local, state and national history. Docents are avail-able on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 1-4 p.m. to welcome guests. Admission is $3 for adults; free for members. Annual dues are $20 for individuals and $35 for couples. The museum is planning a grand opening for its new location in October.

LaBelle Heritage Museum is the reposi-tory for the community’s collective history, offering a unique and fascinating look into the past in a charming new setting. It’s the place to go for a new perspective on old La-Belle.

Chief Pittman noted that it’s been a long time since there was a fi re-related death in LaBelle. He added that fi re detectors are in-valuable in this type of situation. They can alert residents to a fi re before damages are irreparable.

group celebrated its fi rst anniversary with a gathering of members at the Firehouse Community Theatre in LaBelle.

President LaVon Koenig walked the audience through the group’s fi rst year of existence, recounting an initial year of achievements including the development and acceptance of a logo, various speaking engagements, development of a Web site and a Facebook page.

During its fi rst year Arts of the Inland has attracted 76 members and was represented at some top notch events, including its very fi rst function Constitution Day Sept. 17 at Majestic Golf Course in LeHigh Acres.

That event was followed up by Arts in the Park was in LaBelle on February 4 and the huge Balloon Fest in Immokalee, where individual members had booths, the Chil-dren’s Activity Stage and general outreach.

Some members have also encouraged student interns at these events and, at this point, the group has managed to gar-ner grants and sponsors in the amount of $3,000.

Affi liation with the Arts Council of South-

west Florida should provide even bigger op-portunities for grants, Ms. Koenig said. After a summer break from June through August, monthly meetings will resume till January, when Arts of the Inland plans to meet every other month.

Ms. Koenig told members that the group is seeking partherships with businesses and universities to highlight the arts. She said the group also needs additional board and committee members.

A local reception is being planned for December in Hendry County and on Tues-day, May 15, the group will met at Barron Library at 6:30 p.m. with Librarian Karen Hildebrand as speaker.

value in partnering with the professional child advocates. Eddie Lee stated, “Our involvement presents a new and needed perspective. While we learn from those who are educated and experienced in the delivery of children services we bring our volunteer service delivery background and an equal passion for the wellbeing of children to the table. I can tell you emphatically that Kiwanis is being met with much respect and a sense of gratitude from the leadership at several levels in the State Capital.” He is very excited and very proud of the progress Kiwanis has made this year with Healthy Fami-lies Florida. TALLAHASSEE- As part of Arson Aware-ness Week May 6-12, help “Stomp Out Ar-son” by participating in a video contest that brings awareness to the dangers of woods arson.

The Florida Forestry Arson Alert Asso-ciation, a direct support organization of the Florida Forest Service, is hosting the contest to bring awareness to arson-caused wild-fi res.

In 2012 alone, more than 20 percent of Florida’s wildfi res were caused by woods arsonists. If woods arson continues at this rate, Florida has the potential to double its arson numbers from 2011 – experiencing over 800 arson-caused wildfi res burning up to 15,000 acres.

Contest videos must center on the theme “Stomp Out Arson,” and highlight the nega-tive effects of woods arson in a fun, safe and informative way. Video submissions should be posted on the Florida Forest Service Face-book page. The video that obtains the most Facebook “likes” by May 12 will be declared the winner and will receive a $50 gift card sponsored by the Florida Forestry Arson Alert Association.

• Videos must incorporate the theme “Stomp Out Arson.”

• Keep videos at 90 seconds or less. • Absolutely no profanity or vulgarity.

• Absolutely no live fl ame. Any videos depicting live fl ame will be disqualifi ed and removed immediately.

• Only videos posted to the Florida Forest Service Facebook page will be considered.

• Always remember your safety comes fi rst. Do not do anything in your video that could cause harm or injury to you or oth-ers.

• For more information on the “Stomp Out Arson” video contest, visit the Florida Forest Service Facebook fan page.

Help identify suspected arsonists by re-porting suspicious activity to the Arson Alert Hotline at 1-800-342-5869. Callers may re-main anonymous and information about an arson-caused wildland fi re could be worth up to a $5,000 reward. Include the following information:

• Descriptions of vehicles and license plates (make, model, color, etc.)

• Physical descriptions of individuals (ap-proximate height, weight, hair color, cloth-ing, etc.)

• Be watchful for suspicious behavior and pinpoint the area to assist law enforce-ment in their response

• Call 9-1-1 immediately if you see suspi-cious behavior

• Do not approach the suspect. Citizen safety comes fi rst!

Paid Job Trainingby Matt Kinderman

Paid job skills training is available in the South-west Florida region and comes in many shapes and sizes. Individual train-ing programs are general-ly categorized as promot-ing either hard skills or soft skills. Hard skills are technical abilities such as wiring a house or pro-gramming a computer. Soft skills are per-sonal characteristics such as being able to talk to customers or wearing appropriate dress at work. Some highly technical work-ers lack people skills, and some highly per-sonable people lack technical skills.

Work Experience Program (WEP) is de-signed to help potential workers gain nec-essary employability soft skills. Some ap-plicants may be educationally qualifi ed for a position, but they have never held a job before. These applicants may not be able to show on a resume that they know what it is like to show up for work on time, in-teract with co-workers and customers, put in a full day’s work, and be dependable. Under WEP, an applicant receives tempo-rary employment in order to learn work-related soft skills. The benefi t to a willing employer is that they receive a temporary employee and they are only responsible for a portion of their salary.

On the Job Training (OJT) is similar to WEP except that the job seeker lacks a certain technical skill or ability in order to be hired outright. OJT allows for the reimbursement of up to 50 percent of the candidates wages, for up to six months, while the employer trains the candidate to the specifi c requirement or skill gap. OJT can be initiated when an employment rep-resentative contacts an employer to offer OJT for an open position, or when a quali-fi ed job seeker offers themselves to an em-ployer as an OJT candidate. The benefi t to a willing employer is that they are able to train a potential candidate to their own specifi cations while receiving wage reim-bursement.

To be considered for WEP, OJT, or any of the other training programs, ensure your registration on www.employfl roida.com is current and attend a one hour long programs orientation session at the local workforce offi ce. WEP and OJT are open to most occupations, both hourly and sal-ary positions. Employers who wish to take advantage of the OJT program, or wish to initiate a paid internship using workforce fi nancial assistance, should contact their local employment representative.

Southwest Florida Works is the regional state workforce board for Hendry, Glades, Charlotte, Lee and Collier counties. For job search assistance or employer support, speak with an employment representative nearest you by going to www.swfl works.org and click on “Locations.”

by Les MorganSomeone wisely stated, “Mothers hold

their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.” That is very true, for no one impacts the life of a child more than his or her mother.

All of us could testify how our moms are per-sonally woven into our very soul, that, without her infl uence, we would be very empty.

Henry Ward Beecher was a well-known member of the US Congress, as well as a clergyman. Known for his pithy word pic-tures he often used to drive home a point in a sermon or a speech, he said the following about a mom: “The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.” Then he added, “We never know the love of the parent until we become parents ourselves.”

Right on, Pastor and Representative Beecher!

Anne Morrow Lindbergh was an author, the wife to Charles Lindbergh, and a mother. She gave the world a strong insight into the role a woman assumes when she become a mother. She said, “By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great ‘vacationless’ class.”

Well stated, Mrs. Lindbergh. In line with that, one weary, over-worked,

exhausted mother, uttered this prayer to the good Lord. See if you can identify…

Dear Lord, it’s such a hectic day With little time to stop and pray For life’s been anything but calm Since You called on me to be a mom Running errands, matching socks Building dreams with building blocks Cooking, cleaning, and fi nding shoes And other stuff that children lose Fitting lids on bottled bugs Wiping tears and giving hugs A stack of last weeks mail to read So where’s the quiet time I need? Yet when I steal a minute, Lord Just at the sink or ironing board To ask the blessings of Your grace

I see then, in my small one’s face That you have blessed me All the while And I stop to kiss That precious smile Elizabeth Stone gave a wonderful illustra-

tion for all who are not mothers as to what it is like to be a mom. She said, “Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walk-ing around outside your body.”

So, Mom, thanks for all you do. You are a real trooper, a great example and your love is a glowing example of that similar to the Lord Himself.

Please know how important you are to us. Thank you!

In the case of Hendry County, the fi rst step would be for the district school board to use a formal resolution requesting that the board of county commissioners places upon the ballot a proposition to make the offi ce of district school superintendent ap-pointive. This proposition must be placed upon the ballot at the time of a general elec-tion or a statewide primary or special elec-tion. The only qualifi cation for the position of district superintendent found in the K-20 Education Code (Florida School Laws Title XLVIII) is that the superintendent must re-side within the district.

by Pat Dobbins Mark your calendar for May 17th! The

Blood Mobile will be at the Hendry County Health Department at 1140 Pratt Blvd, La-Belle from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Every three seconds someone, some-where, needs a blood transfusion. Blood is always in demand and that’s why we’ve made it easy to donate. The Blood Mobile is one of the easiest ways for you to donate blood.

Why should you consider donating blood? The best reason to donate blood is saving lives! Your blood donation could save the life of someone who has cancer or leukemia, or someone who is having surgery.

Donating blood is easy. You just have to go through a short registration process, an-swer a few medical questions to make sure that you are healthy enough to donate. The process of donating blood is fast. It should only take about 5-10 minutes to donate, and the whole process shouldn’t take any longer than 40 minutes.

To donate blood, you must be in good

health, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. You must be 17 years old or older. Please note: 16-year-olds can donate with a parent’s consent.

Why you may not be able to donate. If you have a cold or the fl u or if you have a sore throat you will not be eligible to do-nate blood. If you are being treated for an illness or have had recent dental surgery you may not be able to donate. However, there are several medications that you can take and still be allowed to donate blood. (Such as aspirin, Tylenol, blood pressure medications)

Be sure to eat well at your regular meal-times and drink plenty of fl uids. You may donate whole blood once every 56 days, which allows plenty of time for your red cells to be replenished.

Please note: There is no risk of contract-ing HIV/AIDS or any other disease through the blood donation process. Each collec-tion kit is sterile, pre-packaged and used only once.

Please consider donating blood. We hope to see you on Thursday, May 17!

by Ron DunbarThe 16-8 LaBelle Cowboys advanced to

the state play-offs last week in baseball with a 11-1 victory over the Dunbar Tigers in the Class 4A-11 District Tournament.

With the victory on Wednesday, April 25, the Cowboys had a chance on Friday, April 27, for the district championship against the always tough Bishop Verot Vikings. The Cowboys took the loss to the #12 team in the nation 10-1 and traveled to Ft. Pierce on Thursday, May 3, to take on Lincoln Park Academy in the fi rst round of the state play-offs at 7:00.

Against Dunbar, southpaw Steven Sodrel pitched fi ve strong innings giving up only four hits and no earned runs. The senior struck out 11 Tigers and walked two.

Austin Garcia had another incredible night with his bat going 3 for 3 with a triple and mammoth 2-run homer. The junior third baseman also scored two runs.

Senior catcher Bo Meador and junior out-fi elder Kippy Stansly were both 2 for 3 for La-Belle, while junior outfi elder Ronnie Burton crushed a 2-run triple.

A g a i n s t Bishop Verot the Cow-boys could not fi nd an answer to stop the Vi-kings as they scored sev-en quick runs in the fi rst two innings on their way to the Dis-trict 4A-11 C h a m p i -onship.

T h e boys battled all the way even though we let them get that early lead. “They never gave up and that’s all I ever ask is to fi ght to the fi nish, Coach Dunbar commented. Hope-fully we will get one more shot at them, and then you never know what might happen on that given night.”

Democrats Unity Dinner to be held on June 15

Hendry County Democrats an-nounced the results of the May 5 County Caucus to elect delegates from the local level who will attend the Florida Demo-cratic Party’s state convention in Tampa this June. At that convention they will join other county delegates from each of Hendry County’s two congressional districts in electing delegates to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Char-lotte, NC the fi rst week in September.

Hendry County Democrats Chairman Joe Thomas said, “We will harness the enthusiasm generated at our local cau-cuses and the Florida Democratic Con-vention toward building a strong grass-roots organization in Florida to elect Democrats up and down the ticket.”

The following individuals were elect-ed at the 2012 Hendry County Caucuses: Joe Thomas from LaBelle for Congres-sional District 16, and Janet Taylor and

Rupert Mighty from Clewiston for Con-gressional District 23.

This year Florida Democrats will send the largest delegation ever to the National Convention with a record 300 delegates.

The majority ofthese will be selected from the county congressional district delegates at the State Convention in Tampa, June 1-3.

was made to have monthly meetings at

the Women’s Club building.

Members participated in many great work-shops, the election of the state offi cers and individual and team competi-tions. There were approximately 3,500 FBLA members from all around the state who came to demonstrate their business skills. We are proud to say our members made us proud once again. Mrs. Higginbotham, LMS Advis-er said, “This group of members really made me proud…it was a pleasure to take them to the conference and see them grow as members!” GO LMS FBLA!
