We meet the first Thursday of the month at Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave. Sarasota FL. 34237 Workshop at 6:00 pm. Officers meeting 6:30 pm. General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm.

Welcome to SteveMania, home of the famed

magician and entertainer Steve Marshall. Steve

Marshall is an award-winning Magician, and for the last

eight years has been performing his own elaborate Magic

show throughout Japan entertaining people in both

Japanese and English.

Some of Steve’s performance credits around the

world include The White House in Washington, D.C., The

Diamond Horseshoe Revue at both Walt Disney World

and Tokyo Disneyland where he was brought over

specially for Tokyo Disneyland’s 15th anniversary

celebration to be the first foreign magician to do the featured magic spot.

Steve was also invited three years in a row to perform at the American

Embassy’s Fourth of July celebration in Tokyo, Japan.

Steve’s magic performances can consist of anything from Close-up

sleight of hand magic to Big Stage Illusions to a Straight Jacket Escape and

even Fire Eating!

One of Steve’s most unusual jobs was a long tour with Ringling Bros. and

Barnum & Bailey Circus as a professional clown. Steve’s home for four years

was the circus train.

Steve has also been asked to write material and help produce shows for

other entertainers as well and he even wrote the theme song for a television

show pilot. Steve is a monthly columnist for “MUM” the magazine of the

Society of American Magicians, which is the oldest, and one of the largest

magic organizations in the world.

From the

President

A very grand BBQ & Picnic at Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island was

our August highlight. A large outdoors Pavilion with tables had been reserved

for our comfort and shelter, with parking, beach and amenities nearby. About

50 members, with families and guests, merrily chomped dozens of hotdogs and

hamburgers with all the fixings' and sodas.

Big hurrahs are due to Ed Kaczmarek who organized and facilitated this

neat Sunday frolic, and to our three hard-working Grillmasters – John Tietjen,

Michael Kent, Lee Wolfson -- who captained those two big charcoal grills all

day, toiling mightily to keep them sizzling with all of those yummy comestibles.

Of course there was a magic contest, too, with seven performers: Mark

Alan, Bob Banta, John Love, John Ames, Gary Roberts, Tom Prieto and Gale

Molovinsky. The judges were: David Pitchford, John Tietjen and Dick Johnson.

A good time was had by all.

I have informed the Board, and now you, that I am taking a medical leave

-of-absence. I have cancers of the left kidney and right lung. My first

surgery to remove the kidney is August 29th, and a lung lobectomy will

follow soon thereafter.

Remember…the real magic, in magic, is Friendship, Fellowship, and

Brotherhood. ---AL LOEFFLER

There was no official meeting in August. Instead, we hosted a picnic on Anna

Maria Island for our members, their families and guests. Ed Kaczmarek found a

modern pavilion we could rent near the beach, but far enough away for ample

parking and ease of access. With his 3 cooks: Michael Kent, John Tietjen and

Lee Wolfson, the party transformed into a banquet. The main course was the

contest with seven contestants: Mark Alan, Bob Banta, John Love, John Ames,

Gary Roberts, Tom Prieto and Gale Molovinsky, and three judges: David

Pitchford, John Tetjen and Dick Johnson. The performers were terrific. There

were mishaps and timing problems. Being outside, they had to contend with the

wind. A dollar bill that would normally float gently in the air, blew away each

time it was tried. The punch line of a performance was a telephone call to his son

who, without prompting, would name the card selected. Unfortunately, the son

never answered the phone despite many attempts to ring him up. But wait,

another performer using tin cans and a string, altered his act to reach the son

and have him “fax” the card to his tin can communicator. At that point the

winner of the contest was incidental to the fact that everyone was a good sport

and everyone had a good time. To top off the day and illustrative of the

fellowship in this chapter, Steven Gottschalk opened a box of magic tricks with

enough for everyone. I took two.

False shuffle or false cuts keeping the set-up in order.

Ask spectator to cut a small portion of the deck, about a quarter but

less than a half.

Place this cut portion on the table face down.

From the remaining cards, deal the next two cards, separately, faces

up on table.

Use the sum of these two cards. ie. 7& 8 = 15

Deal 15 cards, face down, alternately on top of the two face up cards

on table.

Place the un-dealt cards face down on the table next to the earlier

cut cards.

Turn over the top card of each of the four packets and reveal the

four aces. (NSR)

Ring 81 was represented again by Bill Bremner & Joe Floersheimer at the

Jacaranda Public Library during the week of 8/8. This was the fifth year of

this project. Each of the fifteen children were taught a trick and how to

present it in front of an audience. They each performed their effect to a large

audience on Saturday August 13th. Thanks also to Al Loeffler for jumping in at

the last minute to help out. If you live in the Venice area look for an article in

the Venice Herald Tribune. http://galleries.heraldtribune.com/?id=339898
