That day lacked the curiosity and spon-taneity of the day before. We even talked about the weather. Only Rafel seemed to have re-tained a gentle fascination for us. I thought he

looked as if he wanted to say something. Jadzia broke the ice. We had few Jewish students in school, she said. Kazia and Halina agreed.

I had a music teacher, Mr. Kaplan, who

gave me private piano lessons. I think he was

half Jewish. I liked him a lot, Rafel said. He

and his wife were already old when the war began. I dont know what became of them.

You said that you are married and have two children, Kazia queried Marek.

Yes, my son is nine, and my daughter is three. Next week will be her birthday, he replied. From his breast pocket he pulled out a

brown leather billfold with his initials in gold and showed them a picture of his wife and children. Like any proud father, he watched their faces as the postcard-sized picture was passed around.

What beautiful children, they said. Can they write to you? one asked.

They are still allowed to send mail from the ghetto, but we wont receive it, answered Marek.

The group looked at each other, amazed. What harm is there in your having contact with your families? Kazia asked. If youd like to write to them, she said, a letter or a postcard, well be happy to

Yes, Herr Obermeister, I said, following close behind. He didnt answer.

We passed the toolshed and the administrators dining room and entered an office. No one was there. Witczak pointed to a desk at the yard window. On it, surveyors manuals and books were stacked against the wall. He picked up a ledger. From now on youll keep a daily record of the people you bring, he said. Youll also enter their time of arrival and the number of hours each worked. As you probably know, we pay the camp for what you do. This was news to me. From an open drawer he took out a list, apparently the one Tadek had given him. Use this desk, he said, fidgeting as he left.

Yes, Mr. Witczak, I said, but it was too late for him to hear it. He was on his way to the sites.

A stuffy, pinesap aroma per-meated the air. Except for the three desks and chairs and one drafting table, which were all well-worn, the office was bare. I opened the door and found Marek waiting outside. In the two days we had worked togeth-er, I had liked being with him and had learned a lot from his experiences. At times we sat and listened to the sound of water rushing at the spring, thinking of the magical moment when the group of youngsters had unexpectedly come upon us. Will I get to see Rafel again? I wondered. Mr. Witczak wants me in the office, I said to Marek.

    He was disappointed.

    DENTIST DURING THE WAR

    send it out for you.

How gracious of you, Marek responded in impeccable Polish. His good manners were not those of a water carrier. He thanked them and gratefully accepted their offer.

I seized the opportunity and asked if I too could send a letter to my relatives. Halina quickly agreed, and so did Rafel. Gladly, they said.

We reminded ourselves that our delayed return might bring someone to look for us, and Stasia surely would miss the water. Since it was way past nine, the group too was expected at work. A large box rested at Rafels side, a collective endeavor, I thought. Discreetly, lest he embar-rass us, he pointed to the box. We brought it for you. Knowing that such a gift would not deprive them, we accepted it. As they were leaving, Rafel turned to me. Bronek, can you come here at lunchtime? We are free between twelve and one. Can you come?

I think so, I answered. A cer-tain pride and warm feeling touched me inside. Was he interested in me? Then they left us, taking with them their vitality, the vitality of freedom.

We hid the food, picked up the pails, and left. On our return Witczak was walking around impatiently. I soon learned, though, that this was his habit. He never stood still. Seeming to be in a hurry always, he walked fast while talking to people behind him. As we approached him, he signaled me to follow him.

    DENTIST DURING THE WAR

As I began to work at my new job, Witczaks remark to me, We pay for your work, rang in my ears. I never thought that the Nazis would be selling peoples suffering. To hear that they were selling our labor was shocking. I opened the ledger and began to enter the names of the foremen alphabetically, along with the inmates assigned to them and the hours worked each day. Certain names on the list were of people from Dobra. I thought of our com-mon past.

Shortly thereafter Stasia came in, her face beaming. She indicated her influence at the camp. You know, when Mr. Witczak said hed like to have someone to help him in the office, I suggested you, she said. Mr. Witczak is a good man, she continued, making sure I got the intent of her comment. I think you are nice, Bronek, and even though he may not show it, he too likes you. In his position he has to be careful.

I said I understood and thanked her politely. Tadek walked by, poked his head in, and asked what I was doing there. When I said I was working for Witczak, Tadeks look took on a new measure of respect. I understand, he said approvingly. Basiak, followed by Kmiec, arrived at the office, and both seemed surprised to find me there. Working with these two gave me an opportunity to get to know them. Even if for different reasons, hatred for Germany was something we had in common. That the Poles hated Germa-ny was a long-standing historical real-ity, and the latest German occupation brought renewed antipathy. Both men seemed friendly.

At noon Marek waited. Ill be working with Witczak from now on, I said. When I suggested that he get someone to replace me, he said that he could handle it by himself. The box the group brought was still where we had left it. If I wanted to find Rafel, it was time for me to go. Inconspicuously I moved to the rear of the barracks. From there I crossed over a small mound. Then I couldnt be seen from the yard. I walked the rest of the way with long strides. Rafel was sitting on a stump. He got up, and we shook hands in greeting.

You made it, he said warmly.

How could you doubt that I would? I replied.

Neither of us knew where to begin. Sitting there, I tried to think of what to say. I could have said I was glad to see him. Being here is courageous of you, I finally ended up saying.

He began to tell me about his life. He lived in Poznan. His father was a bookkeeper, his mother a homemaker. He was an only child. When the schools reopened, he said, he wanted to get his matura (high school diploma). He loved playing the violin, gardening, reading, and seeing the American films that had by that time disappeared from the Polish screen. When I had gone to school in Kalisz, the family of one of my friends had owned the Apollo cinema. Together we often picked up reels of film from the railroad station. We were free to view them as often as we liked. Rafel and I compared our favorite hobbies and talked about our favorite ethnic foods. Then it was time to end our meeting. Rafel knew that

I wouldnt be able to meet him in the morning. We agreed to meet at lunch the next day.

When I returned to the camp, most of the inmates were still there. No one except Marek knew where I had been. He thought it was dangerous for me to be away at that time.

Where were you? asked Stasia. She had something for me to eat. I didnt expect this. With my fellow inmates eating from the kettles, how could I, in their presence, have different food? I thanked her but said, Ill eat with my comrades. In time, however, hunger won out, and I occasionally

    accepted her leftovers.

Papa also worried when he did not see me in the yard at noon. I saw that my fathers strength was depleting quickly. His foreman, Schmerele, was certainly the woe he was made out to be. I didnt like Papas situation at all. I had always known that our roles would change in time, but I had not real-ized it would be so soon. How is Schmerele? I asked Papa.

Good, he said. He yells a lot, but he isnt treating me worse than anyone else.

If one were looking for a vacation that would miss the point, then the picturesque village of Chelm would surely be the best choice. Chelms very culture was based on missing the point, or perhaps, in engaging in pointless activities in the first place.

One day, the rav set out to catch the train to the neighboring town where he was invited to speak. At the station, the rav suddenly realized that he was missing the notes hed prepared for the speech. The rav informed the townspeople, who had accompanied their beloved rav, that he believed hed left the notes on his desk. The quickest runner from among his disciples was hastily dispatched to run back and check the ravs desk for the precious notes.

The train arrived in the interim, but the ravs devoted followers asked the conductor to wait. They were worried how their rav would be able to deliver his speech without his notes. How would their ravs failure reflect on their prestigious kehillah? After a few tense minutes, the panting bochur was back; without the notes. He happily informed the anx-ious crowd that the rav never erred; he had a fabulous memory and the notes were, indeed, on the desk. The crowd was delighted at this reconfirmation of their great ravs memory. The rav boarded the train without his notes but content with the knowledge that he had accurately remembered where hed left them.

saos, the travels, and not on the chanayos, the rest-stops? The travels were merely a means to get to the various resting destinations, so why not focus on the main intention of the travels?

He goes on to explain that the travels through the wilderness served a very lofty purpose. There were holy sparks that were held in captivity in the wasteland; habitat of the forces of evil. Hashem sent Bnei Yisrael to those very places where the sparks were in captiv-ity. Never before was there in the world such an intense concentration of kedusheh; it was a combination of the kedusheh of Am Yisrael in its entirety coupled with the holiness of the Torah and Moshe and Ahron. They were, therefore, able to overpower the forces of evil and gain possession of those precious sparks. The moment the mission was accom-plished at any given place, Hashem instructed them to move on.

Thus, the whole point of the travels was not to reach any given destination. The intention was to take along from those places whatever needed to be taken. The moment of de-parture from each place was the very moment that Bnei Yisrael took ownership of their newly acquired precious possessions. Hence, the Torahs focus is on the travels which was the very point of their wanderings.

Practical ApplicationsLeisure. Its a, relatively, new word, new idea, new ideology, and a new industry.

Having some down-time was always appreciated as being beneficial for ourselves and for our increased productivity. If we were to work non-stop, wed become burnt-out shells. Wed feel the backlash in every aspect of our lives. Our productivity would suffer; our creativity would diminish; and our vitality would be snuffed out.

Down-time has a distant cousin who bears some resemblance to it, but the two are in reality very different. This cousin is known as killing time. Its a form of art that was once upon a time reserved only to the nobility. They had lots of money, lots of time, and very lit-tle brains. This unhealthy union of unlimited resources and superbly limited brain-power, spawned many offspring, collectively known as the entertainment industry.

This novelty idea of killing time is nowadays no longer the exclusive property of imperial courts and noble patrons. It is now readily accessible to anyone who feels noble at heart. In fact, weve all enjoyed our fair share of this, once, royal treat.

In recent years, down-time, originally the property of the simple folk, and the noble art of time-killing have merged into a single new entity simply known as leisure. For the un-trained eye, the two do look alike so why not turn them into one? However, in truth, these

two alternative uses of time are very different from each other. While breaks and down-time increase our productivity, killing time actually reduces our productivity. However, since the term leisure has been coined, the boundaries between the two have become ever more blurred.

We now dont have to feel guilty when were allowing our precious time to die an untimely and cruel death; we can console ourselves that were actually actively involved in the virtuous activity known as leisure. And who wouldnt agree that leisure is important? It keeps us going; it recharges our batteries. But, the weird thing about leisure is that while it recharges our batteries when were low, it actually drains our batteries and weakens our inner drive once the recharge is complete.

This blurring of lines and the restructuring of definitions calls upon us to be more on guard. We cant afford to have a leisurely attitude about this leisure business. We might drain our batteries too much by lazing around; then well need some more leisure in order to recharge all over again. With such a fine line separating the healthy down-time style leisure from the unhealthy time killing leisure, how can we watch not to cross the line?

For this we can take the cue from the Torah. Our focus should be on what we stand to gain from our travels, trips, and other leisure activities. When were able to identify a ben-efit, such as preventing burnout, refreshing ourselves, spending quality time with family, etc. then we could consider it a truly worthwhile endeavor. However, if the only benefit it affords is that it helps us make the day pass, then we could congratulate ourselves for actively assassinating our best friend: time.

Fancy name and all, leisure for the sake of leisure is pointless. Lets think about it. When we try to kill time, we are investing enormous amounts of effort in money to try to get rid of something that would anyway disappear on its own, without any outside intervention. How foolish an endeavor!

Remember: Leisure can play an important role; dont waste it on filling a black hole!
